Kuch toh log kahenge is a unique heartwarming love story between two people who not only belong to two different generations, and hence, have a substantial age gap, but are also bound by a past which will sooner or later come to not only haunt them but pitch them against each other. What makes 'Kuch toh log kehenge' different is that it is probably the first teleserial which literally sweeps the viewer along with its bitter-sweet process of falling in love.
Nidhi Sharma,24, (Kritika Kamra) is a fresh MBBS graduate who hated to be a doctor but was forced by her retired army officer Col.Yograj Sharma into the profession because her late mother had wanted it as her last wish. Preiti, Swati's neighbor, is her childhood friend, confidante, guide, philosopher all rolled into one. Preiti has her own dilemma because her lawyer father Kapil Solanki would like her to be a lawyer like him and his wife Shyama Solanki while Preiti herself wants to be a fashion designer. Both friends often come each other's rescue when in trouble. Dadi Bua, Yograj's aunt, had taken care of Swati since her mother's death and dotes on her. Chhote Sarkar, her domestic help, has a running battle with Dadi Bua who rules the Sharma household with an iron hand. Chhote Sarkar has a tough time surviving the daily trauma under Dadi Bua as well as under his driving instructor Phoolan, a Hariyanvi who could have been a boxer if she had not been a driving instructor.
Dr.Ashutosh, 37, is one of the brightest Surgeon of the country and runs Dr.Kotnis General Hospital in the outskirts of Bhopal, catering not only to the town but to the villages nearby. Dr.Ashutosh is married to his duty and is often called 'Father Hard Stone' behind his back because of his strict discipline and an unforgiving attitude towards negligence and lack of responsibility and commitment. He lives with his caretaker Hiraman, 55, who had been taking care of him since he was brought home by Dr.Mathur as an 8-year old orphan.
Dr.Mallika, 33, the other senior surgeon at Dr.Kotnis General Hospital,was Ashutosh's junior in the medical college and has been secretly in love with him since. But some incidents in Ashutosh's life had hardened him so much that he had built an impregnable fort around himself through which he won't allow anyone. They had made him distrust all relationships and commitment. Even the man who has picked him up as an orphan and had raised him and was more than a father to him, had ultimately let him down. And then there was this girl who gifted him a bunch of scars that will never heal. His only relationship with and commitment to was with his job as a surgeon and the only feeling and concern he had were for his patients. There was no place for Dr.Mallika or any other woman in his life. This had turned Mallika, a brilliant surgeon otherwise, into a frustrated, bitter, lonely woman who claimed to be Ashutosh's only friend but knew very well that she cannot have him.
And one fine day, into Dr.Kotnis General Hospital walks in Dr.Swati with every intention of being fired from her job. While her carefree, unconventional, often irresponsible attitude to her job infuriates Ashutosh, her natural gift for correct medical diagnosis and love for children makes him suffer her. Her friend Preiti too is unwittingly drawn into this orbit when the Chief Administrator of the hospital Rangnath, 29, an otherwise competent man who wears his heart on his sleeves and often brings whiffs of laughter in the somber corridors of the hospital, falls in love with her.
Will Nidhi be able to break in through the fort that Ashutosh has built around himself? What happens when both their pasts come to haunt them and pitch them against each other? And what happens when an old love walks into Ashutosh's life? And a young man tries to mend Nidhi's broken heart? And what role will Mallika play?

CHHOTE SARKAAR 28, short but full of self-esteem and confidence, Chhote Sarkar is the servant around the house of Col.Yograj Sharma. He is from the backwaters of Bihar and his speech has traces of Bhojpuri. In a very smart move, his poor parents named him 'Chhote Sarkaar' hoping that regardless of whatever job their son will get, he will have to be called 'Chhote Sarkaar'. Chhote Sarkaar is quite ambitious and is learning driving because he hopes to become a driver and on a driver's salary, hopes to appear for the MBA and later join some company as a director or manager. Col.Yograj Sharma and Swati fuel his ambition while Dadi Bua pours water on it because his driving lessons always delay the house work. His ambition gets another hurdle in the form of Phoolan, his driving instructor who is a hard task master but later develops a soft corner for him. First Chhote Sarkar is scared of her admonitions, and later, her love. He finds himself well below her expectations of being a good driver or a good lover.
COL. YOGRAJ SHARMA 45, ex-army man father of Swati, has retained the personality and the sense of humour of a soldier even after retirement. No very tall, but handsome ,well-built and fair. His once fit body has begun to show the consequences of a sedate, confortable lifestyle'he is slightly paunchy which makes him look more imposing instead of fat.He has a unique relationship with Swati'father and daughter often fight and tease each other like good friends but at the same time, when Swati needs his loving care, he is there for her. He pampers Swati when he wants to, not when she needs to be pampered. He believes that to mature, Swati needs to take some tough knocks from life which is why he insists on Swati becoming a doctor even though she hates it.
DADI BUA Elder sister of Col.Yograj Sharma, Dadi Bua, 55, is plump and matronly but a hard task master when it comes to housekeeping. She has taken care of Swati and Col.Yograj Shamra's house since Swati was a baby after Swati's mother died. She also dominates Col.Yograj. She was married into a family in Bhopal and hence picked up the flavor of the local language. Her speech is peppered with expressions like 'Beda Garq!' and 'Abe Manhoos!' which are mostly addressed to her servant curiously named 'Chhote Sarkaar'. She hates to call him 'Chhote Sarkaar' and instead calls him 'Abe Manhoos!'. She is a devotee of Lord Hanuman but doesn't mind even threatening him if he fails to fulfill one of her requests.
DR. ASHUTOSH 38, tall, fair, ruggedly handsome and composed like a silent volcano hiding much lava, Dr.Ashutosh is the Chief Surgeon and Head Doctor at the Dr.Kotnis General Hospital is called 'Father Hard Stone' by his staff behind his back. A brooding loner who has built an unbreakable fort around himself. There is something dark and mysterious about him that attracts women of all ages. Men respect and envy him, women will die to know more about him. Young girls will find him reliable and mature like a father figure and yet very romantic. Older and even married women would like to have an affair with him if at all he was interested which he is not.Doesn't open easily. Has a sense of dry humour which actually underscores his pain. Has a deep, resonant voice which, at times, can make one shake with fear or soothe as a balm. Has a stare that should have the license to kill. Had a heartbreak when the girl he was in love with one fine day just disappeared. His second heartbreak was when Dr.Mathur who had rescued him from his plague-infested village as an orphan took him under his love and care, educated him but never informed him that he had a family, a granddaughter to whom he had willed his house before he died. The house Dr.Ashutosh valued more than his life because it was his home, his emotional anchor, his life. After this, Dr.Ashutosh could not trust any relationship in his life and became a loner.
DR. MALLIKA At 34, she must have had a pretty face that now is hardened by time and life both of which have been rather cruel to her. With the result that Dr.Mallika is now a lonely and bitter woman. Sleeping pills and whisky help her pass her lonely nights. She has dried from inside. Coldly efficient, Dr.Mallika is second to only Dr.Ashutosh. She and Ashutosh go back a long time. She was his junior in the medical college in London and was specially close to him when he has trying to recover from his heartbreak. She has not only been in love with Dr.Ashutosh, but lays her claim on him because of her long friendship. Unfortunately, Dr.Ashutosh is not in love with her. Because of her love for Ashutosh, she has shut out any other man in her life.
DR. Nidhi 24, Gorgeous and cute, spirited, casual, full of fun and slightly whacky. Only child of her parents and her mother dead, hence pampered. Thinks she is not mature enough to be a doctor in spite of getting 14th rank in M.B.B.S. Medium height, fair, eyes full of mischief and a smile that's devastating.Loves kids. Irrepressible, incorrigible, and an incurable prankster. But her heart is in the right place. Is almost a friend to her father.Has a wonderful relationship with her friend Preiti. Both girls are each other's moral and emotional support but at the same time, do not miss a chance to have fun at each other's cost.Older women will like to mother her, young girls would envy or idolize her. It will take exactly 10 seconds for any man to fall in love with her. Curiously, has not been in love till now. She is a fresh intern at Dr.Kotnis General Hospital where Dr.Ashutosh is the Chief Surgeon and Head Doctor.
KAPIL SOLANKI Preiti's father, Kapil Solanki, 45, is an overweight stubborn lawyer who thinks he is very smart but is actually not. He is also quite forgetful which Preiti and her mother Shyama Solanki use to their advantage. In spite of his weight problem, he loves to eat and tries to pass his acidity as minor heart attacks. He wants Preiti to follow in his profession, dismissing her desire to become a fashion designer immature. But under his stubborn exterior, he hides a soft heart which will accept Rangnath, a man he dislikes, as his son-in-law just because Preiti loves him.
NURSE D'SOUZA 55, a short, heavy-set matronly woman, nurse D'Souza is thye senior m,ost nurse at the Dr.Kotnis general Hospital and knows more about medicine and medical care than most doctors and interns. She is very strict with the hospital staff and patients. Even doctors are scared of her. But her harsh nature hides a very soft person.
PHOOLAN 28,a tall Hariyanavi woman, well-built and fair, Phoolan combines the attributes of a female boxer from Bhivani and her namesake the Late Bandit Queen. Her parents actually named her in the memory of Phoolan Devi. With her Amazonian body, she is no less sexy than a Baywatch babe. But with her arms no less than a hammer, her pats to Chhote Sarkaar on his good performance in driving almost break his back. Worse comes when she falls in love with Chhote Sarkar and starts spouting Urdu love poetry in a harsh Haryanavi accent.
PREITI 24, really pretty, almost petite, like a delicate flower. An M.A. in Fine Arts, Preiti wants to be a fashion designer but her stuffy father Mr.Kapil Solanki wants her to follow him in his profession of being lawyer. When it comes to her father, she is timid and obedient, but with her childhood friend Swati, she is on equal terms. Wide-eyed and a little nave, she is not always clued in to Swati's pranks, but she goes along for the sake of their incredible friendship. In spite of her delicate personality, she is the only one who can stand up to Swati and force her do what she wants her to do. Her mother Shyama Solanki, herself a lawyer who chose to be a homemaker is her shield against her father. She too has not been in love so far.
RANGNATH Rangnath, 32, the Administrator at the Dr.Kotnis General Hospital, is an incurable flirt and wears his heart on his sleeve for any girl who happens to be in his proximity, be it Dr.Mallika, Swati or other female staff of the hospital. Only when he meets Preiti does he realizes that he has seriously fallen in love with her. The female staff doesn't mind his flirting because Ranganth is actually a very good administrator and Dr.Ashutosh's right arm in managing the hospital emergencies. Though he himself is a qualified doctor, he chose to be an administrator because he was honest enough to recognize by his modest performance in M.B.B.S. that he will never be an excellent doctor.
SHYAMA SOLANKI In spite of being a better lawyer than her husband, Shyama Solanki,45, chose to be a housekeeper for the sake of her husband and daughter. In fact she helped Kapil Solanki pass his law examination when she was studying with him because she had fallen in love with this cute student of law. Slightly plump but still pretty, she protects Preiti against her husband's stubbornness while she also helps him in his law practice with useful tips without hurting his ego.
