Saiyyan

Prologue

Kehte hain, agar kisi toothe tara par dua mangho...tho woh puri ho jaati hain.

Keeping this in mind, 10-year-old Heer Mann sat on her bedroom balcony and looked up at the heavens. When she spotted a shooting star zoom across the sky, her young heart leaped in excitement and she closed her eyes, murmuring her wish.

"I wish...That Prem Juneja goes back to Canada and I never have to see him again. Woh mujhe bilkul bhi acha nahin lagda...usse please Canada wapas bejh do."

Tonight was a very special night; the eldest daughter of leading business tycoon Balraj Mann turned 10 years old. After the lavish party thrown by her father and mother, Teji Mann, Heer went to her room and sat out on her balcony like many times before. This was her place. This is the place she came to think...will she pass her math final? Did everyone like her birthday dress? Will papa let her go to the new coffee shop that just opened with her friends?

This is the place she came to dream...what will she be when she grows up? A dancer maybe? Or a business tycoon just like her father? Who will she marry? Is there a prince charming waiting for her like in Cinderella's story?

And this is the place she came to pray. Please, let me always make my family proud. Let me keep the Mann name soaring high and be everything my parents wish for me to be. Let me find a love just as romantic as Cinderella's love story. Let him be the most amazing person in the world, after her dad of course.

And tonight...young Heer wished with her whole heart that the annoying Prem Juneja leaves and never comes back into her life again.

Chapter 1

"Ahhh!" A 10-year-old girl screamed at the top of her lungs as she saw a black spider on her bed. Chubby cheeks with freckles across the nose, short hair tied in pigtails, and big brown eyes wide and filled with fear as she jumped off her bed.

After a few seconds of screaming she noticed the spider was not moving. She frowned and upon closer inspection, realized that it wasn't real. She heard it then, the goofy laughter of a boy standing by her door.

Heer spun around and glared at the scrawny 11-year-old boy, who was hunched over laughing and holding onto his stomach. "PREM!!!! I'M GONNA KILL YOU!" Heer screamed and dashed after Prem Juneja, who ran out still laughing.

Prem Juneja was tall for his age...a skinny boy on the verge of puberty. He had thick black disheveled hair and an awkward posture, a boy not completely comfortable with himself yet.

Being the eldest son of Hotel Billionaire Lalit Juneja and his wife Gayatri Juneja, Prem was the apple of his parents' eyes. Much like Heer was the darling of her parents.

The Junejas and the Manns were two of the wealthiest families in India. Balraj Mann is the founder and owner of Mann Electronics, one of the leading technological businesses in India and reaching other parts of Asia. Lalit Juneja started his hotel chain in India before shifting to Canada to expand his empire further. Owner and founder of Juneja hotels, his chain is known as one of the most luxurious with its elite cliental; and Lalit wishes one day for his sons, Prem and Preet, to expand his business further to the United States.

But before Balraj and Lalit were business tycoons, they were childhood friends. A casual meeting between two young boys in boarding school became the friendship of a lifetime. A friendship...that was just as strong today as it was yesterday, and will continue to be stronger in the years to come.

The Junejas came to India for a visit and were currently resided in the Mann's lavish mansion. The four elders were sitting in the living room chatting, with a young Preet and Meher, ages 9 and 8, seated on the floor playing a board game, when they heard laughter and an angry scream that followed.

"How is it that we are such good friends but our kids can't stand each other?" Balraj asked, knowing full well where the noises were coming from.

As if on cue, Prem burst into the room with an angry Heer chasing after him.

"Prem how many times do I need to tell you to not come into my room!" Heer yelled.

"Heer! Manners...they are our guests." Teji scolded her elder daughter.

"Yea Heer, I'm your guest...and all I want to do is get to know you..." Prem retaliated, being the goody two-shoes boy in front of the elders.

"OW maa!" Prem yelped as Gayatri yanked his ear. "I know very well how much you want to know Heer. You pulled another prank on her didn't you Prem?" Gayatri asked in a stern voice, knowing her son's every move.

Prem pouted and replied, "But MAA...she started it by putting the lizard in my room last time." Prem replied while accusingly pointing a finger at Heer.

"But that is only because he pulled my hair!" Heer complained and glared at Prem. Both children glared at each other and the elders shook their head at their kids' antics.

"Now now kids...our families have been friends for years...you children should really get to know each other." Lalit said in a gentle tone.

"EW! I don't want to know him/her!" Prem and Heer both protested at the same time.

"Enough! Both of you...be nice and go play outside. I will not tolerate any more of this." Teji said in a stern tone, causing both Prem and Heer to sulk and drag their feet out of the room.

"My God...what are they going to do when they grow up?" Teji asked to no one in particular.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The moment Prem and Heer were out of hearing distance from the elders, Prem pulled one of Heer's pigtails. "OW! Stop doing that!!!!!" Heer cried and raised her hand to hit him.
"Why!? I thought you loved it freckle face!" Prem replied, dodging Heer's attack easily since he was taller than her.
"UGH! I can't wait till you go back to Canada chicken legs!" Heer retaliated by stepping on Prem's foot.
"Ow!" Prem let go of her pigtail and took a step back to look at Heer. A mischievous grin then bloomed on his youthful face. "You don't know do you?" Prem asked, amused.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Heer asked, confused.
"We're staying in India dumb dumb. My family will be moving into our house and I'll be joining your school soon." Prem answered, grinning evilly, liking the idea of playing more pranks on Heer.
Heer's jaw dropped. But she made the damn wish on a shooting star! It should come true!' Heer screamed in her head as she felt her world crash around her.
Chapter 2
12 years later
St. Xavier University was buzzing with excitement all day. Known as one of the most prestigious universities in India, they were known to create the best of the best. Business tycoons, engineers, doctors, sportsmen...Xavier bred the best in each field. You where either extremely talented, or extremely wealthy, or both...to attend this college.
And today was a special day in this university. Their beloved basketball team was fighting for the championship title 2 years in a row...and playing their last game before the head coach of 30 years will retire. St. Xavier Tigers, reigning champions, will battle their biggest rivals tonight...and the students of Xavier couldn't be more excited.
Meher Mann handed out more flyers regarding the game tonight to passing students. "Don't forget to come tonight!" She said enthusiastically to some passing students. At age 20, Meher was a curvaceous girl who was completely comfortable with herself. Adored by all, especially by her parents and elder sister, Meher was a pampered young princess. And why shouldn't she be?... she was the youngest daughter of business tycoon Balraj Mann after all.
But despite having all the riches at her feet, her parents made sure she and her sister, Heer Mann, were good human beings. The Mann girls were known for their beauty and brains. But prestige aside, each one was known for their kindness, a trait very few people of wealth achieved.
"Come support our team tonight!" Meher encouraged another group of students passing by.
"Don't you mean come support your boyfriend tonight?" a husky voice asked teasingly. Meher turned to face Ashlesha Mann, cousin to Meher and Heer.
"Shut up Ash" Meher blushed.
Ashlesha let out a husky laugh and continued, "You know everyone is going to come tonight. It's an important game...and the boys of the team are like the heartthrobs of this college. You know you don't have to pass out flyers to get people to come support."
Ash easily fell in step with Meher as she passed out another flyer. "I know, but still...I should show extra enthusiasm right?" A pretty blush crept up Meher's cheeks as she thought of her boyfriend of 6 months, Preet Juneja.
"And plus...aside from my boyfriend being in the basketball team, Heer di's fiance is on the team as well. Why shouldn't I put in the extra effort?" Meher asked, matter of factly.
"Point noted little sister" Ash replied, happy with the fact that both her cousins and closest friends were so happy in their relationships. "Speaking of Heer, where is she?" Ash asked.
Meher grinned, "Where else?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~'

Delicate fingers caressed the piano keys...a beautiful melody filling the music room of St. Xavier's.

~Heere moti main na chaahoon
main toh chaahoon, sangam tera~

Soft eyelids closed over almond brown eyes, as the tune filled her ears and touched her soul. Hair as black at midnight fell around a fair face...and angel's face.

~main toh teri...saiyyan
tu hai mera ... ~

She played from the heart. Her fingers naturally moving across the keys...the song embedded in her every heartbeat. It was her favorite...for it spoke about unconditional love...a love that completely consumes...a love she has dreamed about ever since she was a little girl.
~...saiyyan ...~

Studying business and taking over her father's company someday was her dream. But playing the piano and thinking about her love was her passion...

~...saiyyan...~

She truly lives up to her name...

"Heer..."

Heer Mann opened dreamy eyes as she recognized the voice...a voice that always brings a smile to her pretty face. She stopped playing and turned to see the love of her life walk towards her.

Manmeet sat next to Heer on the piano bench and gave her a quick kiss on her cheek. "Hello" He said sweetly, greeting his fiance.

"Hey..." Heer replied, her features softening at his presence. "How come you're not at practice?" she asked, referring to the Xavier Tigers doing last minute drills in preparation for the big game.

"Coach let us out early to get some rest before tonight. He figured we're as prepared as we'll ever be." Manmeet replied, circling his arm around Heer's waist and pulling her closer to him.

"You're coming tonight right?" Manmeet asked.

"You know I wouldn't miss it" Heer murmured, resting her head on his shoulder...feeling completely content in his arms.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Tigers! Tigers! Tigers! Tigers!" The crowd chanted as they waited for the championship game to begin. Some wore the school jersey to show their support, others brought banners...and everyone chanted...calling to their team.
"Ladies and gentleman! Welcome to the madness of the century!" the crowd cheered as the MC began the show.
"From Sacred Heart's University...we have..." His voice drowned out as he introduced the players from the opposing team.
Heer spotted Meher and Ash and climbed the bleachers to sit next to them. "Hey! Looks like I made it just in time." Heer said, referring to the Tigers still not introduced yet.
"We all know you would NEVER miss Manmeet's entrance" Ashlesha teased her elder cousin by a couple of months.
"Shut up Ash" Heer replied sweetly, honey coating her voice. Ash simply laughed, not taking offense. It was well known that along with beauty, brains, and kindness, Heer Mann was a feisty individual.
The bright stadium lights bounced off the simple diamond ring on Heer's left hand. Ash lifted Heer's hand to admire the ring, "So...how does it feel being engaged for a whole week?" she asked.
The smile adorning Heer's face said it all. She was happy. She and Manmeet met in college 1 year ago. They hit it off instantly and began dating soon after. He was from a middle class family on scholarship and his simplicity is what captured Heer. She fell in love and agreed without hesitation when he proposed to her a week ago.
"It is the most amazing feeling in the world. He is everything I could ever ask for. Heer replied, dreamily.
In the Xavier Tiger's locker room, a shirtless guy stretched...his back muscles flexing...his chiseled arms made to make women drool. He reached for his jersey and slipped it over his broad shoulders, the C' on it clearly denoting him as captain of the defending champions.
"And now...it is time for the reigning champions to grace us with their presence. Starting with the power forward...and the multi-talent of the team." The MC stated, building up the hype.
Heer's small smile from earlier got bigger as she knew who was coming.
"Give it up for Manmeet Singh!" the crowd cheered as Manmeet jogged across the court with a big smile on his face and stood next to his teammates, who were earlier called one by one.
Heer sighed...oh how she loved him...
He tied his shoelace and secured his bandana over his forehead, to prevent his bangs getting in his eyes during the game. But the few strands of dark hair that always framed his face is what added to his charm. All a woman would want is to dive her fingers into his hair and pull him closer for a kiss.
Heer couldn't wait till the day she married Manmeet...it will be the best day of her life. This is what she always wanted...someone who had a pure heart. A prince charming that will sweep her off her feet.
Before closing his locker, the handsome man looked at the photo of his parents taped inside. Gentle brown eyes the color of warm whiskey...eyes that can make a woman think impure thoughts. He touched his fingertips to his lips, and placed it on the picture before closing the door and heading out.
"Coming up next...the point guard...the ring charmer of the Tigers...PREET JUNEJA!" the MC's voice was drowned out as the crowd cheered loudly. Meher stood up from her seat and cheered extra hard as a good looking man with the cutest smile ran across the court. He spotted Meher and winked at her as he took his position. He was a tall man with looks to match. Considered as one of the most eligible bachelors as Lalit Juneja's youngest son, many hearts were broken when he declared his loyalty to his childhood friend Meher Mann.
"And now...the shooting guard of the team...the captain of the champions..." the MC began, the crowd turning wild knowing full well who was coming out next.
"Oh boy" Heer scoffed as she rolled her eyes. Meher and Ash giggled at Heer's antics. It's ridiculous how after all these years...she still couldn't get along with the elder Juneja brother.
"Give...it...up...for the pride of the Tigers...PREM JUNEJA!!!!" the crowd stood up in excitement as their most beloved heartthrob made his entrance. Heer didn't bother standing up...she looked on un-amused as her nemesis grinned and waved at the crowd.
Prem bumped his fist with his baby brother and took his position on the court. "Alright guys...lets show them how it's done." Prem encouraged in a deep voice. With that being said, the ball tossed in the air and one of the players hit it towards the Tigers. Prem easily caught it and dunked his first point of the night. A charming grin adorned his face as he landed swiftly on the floor and kicked off the championship game.
Oh my God...how arrogant can he possibly get!?' Heer thought, already annoyed by Prem Juneja's presence.
Chapter 3
"OH MY GOD! What a steal! Manmeet Singh quickly passes the ball to Prem Juneja and he SHOOTS! HE SCORES! Sacred Heart's coach calls a time out. The score is now 98-96 with only 15 seconds on the clock. Sacred Hearts in the lead. This truly is a game to watch." The commentator rambled on the happenings of the game.
Everyone was on the edge of her seat. The game has been close since the beginning. Both teams were just so GOOD.
The audience cheered for their school. Some chatted, waiting for the game to start, while others chanted their favorite player's name.
The game was just too CLOSE. And this game was too important for the Tigers. The players wanted to give this win to their beloved coach before retirement. Heer's eyes, however, never left Manmeet. She knew how important this game was to him as well. Manmeet was here on scholarship, and it was vital for him to give his best in order to keep his scholarship.
She saw the tension in his muscles; he was just trying too hard. When time-out ended and the players were walking back to their positions, Heer saw Prem stop Manmeet. She was too far away to understand the words, but she saw Prem place a hand on Manmeet's shoulder and murmur something to him. Manmeet smiled and Heer knew, Prem said something to calm Manmeet down and play with a clear head.
She may hate Prem Juneja's guts...but she had to admit that he was a good captain to his team mates. And hell...he was a damn good basketball player too as Heer watched Prem steal the ball.
"Oh man I can't watch" Meher covered her eyes as the clock started moving again.
12 seconds
Prem was double teamed and passed the ball to Manmeet. Manmeet dribbled, trying to find an opening.
10 seconds
He saw it then, he dribbled and dashed to the right to pass the ball to an open Preet.
7 seconds
Preet caught the ball easily and ran to the basket. Xavier students cheered with their whole hearts. He was going to shoot a 2-pointer and tie the game.
5 seconds
Preet pivoted and dodged another player, getting closer to the basket. The players of Sacred Heart's all closed in on him.
3 seconds
The crowd roared when he jumped up to shoot...but ended up passing the ball to Prem Juneja, who was completely unguarded.
1 second
Prem caught the ball and shot it from the 3-point line. Everyone held their breaths. Heer had her eyes glued on the ball, too scared to move. Please go in, please go in, please go in... she mentally prayed.
Prem felt the release when the ball left his hands. It was only a matter of time now...
The ball swished through the net effortlessly...and St. Xavier roared to life!
The Tigers ran to Prem and tackled him. THEY WON!
Prem let out a hearty laugh and hugged his teammates. Everyone from the bleachers poured down to the gym floor, congratulating their fellow school mates. Confetti fell from everywhere...and the coach looked on with a proud smile and tears in his eyes. His Tigers were champions once again.
Meher rushed to Preet and engulfed him in a bear hug. "I'm so happy for you!!!!" Meher gushed. She let out a hearty laugh when Preet picked her up and spun her around, a grin adorning his handsome face.
"Arre baap re baap...mera kamar" Preet joked, putting Meher down and placing a hand on his waist.
"Kya!? How dare you!!!" Meher whined, knowing full well that Preet was joking but still raised her hand to hit him. Preet laughed and ran away with Meher chasing after him.
He went straight to his big brother, his PB, and used him as a shield. "Arre! Yeh kya ho raha hai?" Prem let out a laugh as Meher tried to go around him and hit Preet.
"Deko na Prem bhaiya, Preet mujhe humesha satata rehta hai" Meher complained. Despite the never ending war between her elder sister and Prem Juneja, Meher considered the Juneja brothers some of the closest men to her heart.
Ever since the Juneja's permanently moved to India, they practically grew up together. Always attending the same schools, always in the same circles, carrying on the friendship their fathers started.
Prem laughed out loud and pulled Preet's ears. "Ow PB!" Preet yelped. "Kyon re?...tu phirse mere choti behen ko sata raha hai?" Prem asked playfully.
"PB aap humesha Meher ka saath lete ho. Kabhi to mere baare mein socho..your one and only brother." Preet complained.
They all laughed as Prem let go of Preet and hugged Meher and Preet, one arm on each. Anyone can tell that this was a reoccurring situation between this group of people. They seemed like a family.
Heer's eyes scanned the court in frenzy. Everyone was there at once and she could not find Manmeet anywhere. She was so proud of him!
She spotted him then. Manmeet was shaking hands with a man who looked to be in his 50s. By the time she reached him the man turned around to leave.
"Hey congratulations!" Heer beemed.
Manmeet turned and quickly smiled, giving Heer a hug. Heer didn't notice that Manmeet's reaction to her was a little delayed, like his mind was elsewhere.
"Hey! Thank you!" Manmeet replied. "Why don't you go ahead and greet some of your other friends? I'll shower and meet you at the after party?" Manmeet replied. His eyes darting in the direction of the aging man.
Heer didn't seem to notice. "Sounds good to me. Also, my dad invited you to dinner tomorrow night. He wanted to speak to you about the wedding, but I'll give you more details later tonight." Heer said, completely oblivious.
Manmeet gave a small smile, "Ok, I'll see you later." With that being said he turned and got lost in the crowd. Heer watched his retreating back, still smiling.
If everything went perfectly, she and Manmeet will be married by the end of the month. She was grateful to have a family who supported her in her every decision, and accepted Manmeet as the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.
"Hey there freckle face...you know you look kind of creepy smiling at nothing." A deep, husky voice spoke.
Heer's smile instantly turned into a scowl and she turned and faced the devil...Prem Juneja.
He arms glistened from sweat, his hair a wet mess, and the arrogant Juneja grin that seems to be forever plastered on his face whenever he wants to make Heer's life miserable.
"What do you want chicken legs? Go bother someone else" Heer dismissed him like a princess would dismiss a peasant.
"Awww don't I get a congratulations? After all I'm your oldest friend" Prem teased, sarcasm dripping his every word. What can he say? Old habits die hard. His silly pranks as a kid turned into a habit...he just loved getting a rise out of Heer.
Heer shot her chin up in defense, looking at Prem as if he was the most despicable thing in the world. Prem's grin only got wider.
Heer stepped closer to Prem. He was a few inches taller than her, so she had to tilt her head back to maintain eye contact with him. Prem waited patiently, curious to see what Heer plans on doing.
She then smiled, "Go to hell Prem." She said sweetly, and walked away.
Prem let out an amused chuckled looking at her retreating back...yep...old habits definitely die hard.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Heer, Meher, and Ash entered the Juneja beach house to see the after party in full swing. Music blasted from the surround sound system. The disco ball highlighting silhouettes colliding against each other on the dance floor. A few mingled with drinks in their hands while another group took a round of tequila shots. The Tigers were 2 time champions and no one was going to sleep tonight.

Heer let out a squeal as she was lifted off her feet in a pair of strong arms. She knew exactly who it was and engulfed the man in a bear hug. "Congratulations Preet! I'm so proud of you!" Heer yelled, over the loudness of the music.

Preet placed Heer down and smiled at her. Heer adored the younger Juneja as much as she despised the elder one. She considered Preet the younger brother she never had, similar to how Meher considered Prem the elder brother she never had.

Preet hugged Ashlesha as well and then entwined his fingers with Meher's. "I'm sad I missed you after the game di." Preet said.

"I know...it was ridiculously crowded there...I got out as soon as I got the chance." Heer replied back.

"Well you're here now...save me a dance sis!" Preet yelled over the music, and pulled Meher onto the dance floor.

"I'm going to get a drink, do you want anything?" Ash turned and asked Heer.

"No you go ahead...I'll mingle for a bit" Heer replied, parting ways with Ash in search of Manmeet.

Heer turned a corner and bumped straight into a hard chest. Strong arms came around to steady her, and before she looked up ready to apologize, that deep voice spoke to her again for the second time that night.

"Arre tum humesha mera rasta kyon kaat dethi ho kaali billi ki tara?" Prem asked, never loosing an opportunity to annoy Heer. He changed into casual jeans and a black shirt, the first few buttons undone and the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

"Uff! Stop breathing my air you spawn of Satan." Heer retorted, pushing his arms away.

"Oh hello...this is my house...you're breathing MY air freckle face" Prem retaliated.

"Oh go jump off your balcony" Heer shot back. She flipped her hair and kept on walking.

Prem rolled his eyes and walked in the opposite direction, needing a drink after the hard earned win.

Heer turned another corner and found Manmeet outside in the backyard. A few people lingered outside as well, just chitchatting and getting a breath of fresh air from the heated party taking place inside. But Heer noticed Manmeet off to the side, in deep thought.

She walked up to him and stood next to him. "Hi...I was looking for you everywhere" Heer said.

Manmeet came out of his thoughts and gave Heer an off-handed smile. Heer frowned and placed a gentle hand on his arm.

"Kya baath hai? You seem so distracted...is everything ok?" Heer asked, concerned. What caused that look of worry on her fianc's face?

Manmeet sighed, "Kuch nahin...just thinking about the future that's all" He replied, and placed his arm around her.

Heer smiled, "Don't worry about tomorrow. Papa knows you are the man I want to be with and we will be married in no time" she said, trying to comfort him.

Manmeet didn't say anything. He just gave a small smile and downed his drink.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heer entered her bedroom around 3:00am. The party started dying down around 2:30am and Heer took this as her cue to head home.
She changed into a baby blue silk nightgown and started on her nightly ritual...brush her teeth... comb her hair...apply face cream...little womanly rituals that a man will never understand.
Tomorrow Manmeet will come to her home and a date will be set for their wedding. She opened her balcony door and stepped out into the night. The moon was full...her light cascading down on Heer.
tu jo chhoo le pyaar se
aaraam se mar jaaoon
Heer lifted her face up...a pretty smile adorning her features as she looked up at the heavens. A cool breeze caressed her dark locks. Her mind started dreaming...like so many times before...
aaja chanda bahoo mein
tujh mein hi gum ho jaaoon main
Heer opened her arms and breathed in the night air. She wished for a love that consumes her...a love that rushed through her every vein...and made her whole. She wanted this feeling to never end...
Prem stepped out onto his balcony. It was a beautiful night...the cool breeze...full moon...but he felt something in the air...something that pulled him into the night...
tere naam mein kho jaaoon
Heer...she wanted nothing more than to live up to her name. A girl known for love...a girl who gives everything to her soul mate...and receives the same devotion in return.
saiyyan ...
Prem looked up at the moon, hands in his pockets...trying to figure out what the night was trying to tell him. He felt something stir in his heart...like somebody was calling to him...
Saiyyan...
basketball team, Heer di's fiance is on the team as well. Why shouldn't I put in
the extra effort?" Meher asked, matter of factly.
"Point noted little sister" Ash replied, happy with
the fact that both her cousins and closest friends were so happy in their
relationships. "Speaking of Heer, where is she?" Ash asked.
Meher grinned, "Where else?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~'

Delicate fingers caressed the piano keys...a beautiful
melody filling the music room of St. Xavier's.

~Heere moti main na chaahoon

main toh chaahoon, sangam tera~

Soft
eyelids closed over almond brown eyes, as the tune filled her ears and touched
her soul. Hair as black at midnight fell around a fair face...and angel's face.

~main toh teri...saiyyan

tu hai mera ... ~

She played
from the heart. Her fingers naturally moving across the keys...the song embedded in
her every heartbeat. It was her favorite...for it spoke about unconditional
love...a love that completely consumes...a love she has dreamed about ever since
she was a little girl.

~...saiyyan ...~

Studying
business and taking over her father's company someday was her dream. But playing
the piano and thinking about her love was her passion...

~...saiyyan...~

She truly
lives up to her name...

"Heer..."

Heer Mann
opened dreamy eyes as she recognized the voice...a voice that always brings a
smile to her pretty face. She stopped playing and turned to see the love of her
life walk towards her.

Manmeet sat
next to Heer on the piano bench and gave her a quick kiss on her cheek. "Hello"
He said sweetly, greeting his fiance.

"Hey..." Heer
replied, her features softening at his presence. "How come you're not at
practice?" she asked, referring to the Xavier Tigers doing last minute drills
in preparation for the big game.

"Coach let
us out early to get some rest before tonight. He figured we're as prepared as
we'll ever be." Manmeet replied, circling his arm around Heer's waist and
pulling her closer to him.

"You're
coming tonight right?" Manmeet asked.

"You know I
wouldn't miss it" Heer murmured, resting her head on his shoulder...feeling
completely content in his arms.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Tigers!
Tigers! Tigers! Tigers!" The crowd chanted as they waited for the championship
game to begin. Some wore the school jersey to show their support, others
brought banners...and everyone
chanted...calling to their team.
"Ladies and
gentleman! Welcome to the madness of the century!" the crowd cheered as the MC began
the show.
"From
Sacred Heart's University...we have..." His voice drowned out as he introduced the
players from the opposing team.
Heer
spotted Meher and Ash and climbed the bleachers to sit next to them. "Hey!
Looks like I made it just in time." Heer said, referring to the Tigers still
not introduced yet.
"We all
know you would NEVER miss Manmeet's entrance" Ashlesha teased her elder cousin
by a couple of months.
"Shut up
Ash" Heer replied sweetly, honey coating her voice. Ash simply laughed, not
taking offense. It was well known that along with beauty, brains, and kindness,
Heer Mann was a feisty individual.
The bright
stadium lights bounced off the simple diamond ring on Heer's left hand. Ash
lifted Heer's hand to admire the ring, "So...how does it feel being engaged for a
whole week?" she asked.
The smile
adorning Heer's face said it all. She was happy. She and Manmeet met in college
1 year ago. They hit it off instantly and began dating soon after. He was from
a middle class family on scholarship and his simplicity is what captured Heer.
She fell in love and agreed without hesitation when he proposed to her a week
ago.
"It is the
most amazing feeling in the world. He is everything I could ever ask for. Heer
replied, dreamily.
In the Xavier Tiger's locker room, a shirtless
guy stretched...his back muscles flexing...his chiseled arms made to make women
drool. He reached for his jersey and slipped it over his broad shoulders, the
C' on it clearly denoting him as captain of the defending champions.
"And now...it
is time for the reigning champions to grace us with their presence. Starting
with the power forward...and the multi-talent of the team." The MC stated,
building up the hype.
Heer's
small smile from earlier got bigger as she knew who was coming.
"Give it up
for Manmeet Singh!" the crowd cheered as Manmeet jogged across the court with a
big smile on his face and stood next to his teammates, who were earlier called
one by one.
Heer
sighed...oh how she loved him...
He tied his shoelace and secured his
bandana over his forehead, to prevent his bangs getting in his eyes during the
game. But the few strands of dark hair that always framed his face is what
added to his charm. All a woman would want is to dive her fingers into his hair
and pull him closer for a kiss.
Heer
couldn't wait till the day she married Manmeet...it will be the best day of her
life. This is what she always wanted...someone who had a pure heart. A prince
charming that will sweep her off her feet.
Before closing his locker, the handsome
man looked at the photo of his parents taped inside. Gentle brown eyes the
color of warm whiskey...eyes that can make a woman think impure thoughts. He
touched his fingertips to his lips, and placed it on the picture before closing
the door and heading out.
"Coming up
next...the point guard...the ring charmer of the Tigers...PREET JUNEJA!" the MC's
voice was drowned out as the crowd cheered loudly. Meher stood up from her seat
and cheered extra hard as a good looking man with the cutest smile ran across
the court. He spotted Meher and winked at her as he took his position. He was a
tall man with looks to match. Considered as one of the most eligible bachelors
as Lalit Juneja's youngest son, many hearts were broken when he declared his
loyalty to his childhood friend Meher Mann.
"And
now...the shooting guard of the team...the captain of the champions..." the MC began,
the crowd turning wild knowing full well who was coming out next.
"Oh boy"
Heer scoffed as she rolled her eyes. Meher and Ash giggled at Heer's antics.
It's ridiculous how after all these years...she still couldn't get along with the
elder Juneja brother.
"Give...it...up...for
the pride of the Tigers...PREM JUNEJA!!!!" the crowd stood up in excitement as
their most beloved heartthrob made his entrance. Heer didn't bother standing
up...she looked on un-amused as her nemesis grinned and waved at the crowd.
Prem bumped
his fist with his baby brother and took his position on the court. "Alright
guys...lets show them how it's done." Prem encouraged in a deep voice. With that
being said, the ball tossed in the air and one of the players hit it towards
the Tigers. Prem easily caught it and dunked his first point of the night. A
charming grin adorned his face as he landed swiftly on the floor and kicked off
the championship game.
Oh my
God...how arrogant can he possibly get!?' Heer thought, already annoyed by Prem
Juneja's presence.
Chapter 4
Teji placed the tie around Balraj's neck and tied the knot, a task she has performed many times for her life partner.
She looked up at her husband and felt the calmness of his nature. He may be a sharp businessman to the world, but to her he was the gentlest man...a man who loved his family with his every breath.
"Aaj Manmeet se teek tara se baat karna..." Teji said while straightening out the tie.
When Balraj looked down, avoiding eye contact, Teji understood.
"Mein jaanti hoon...aap humesha se chate teh ke Heer Prem ki ho. Aur Maan aur Juneja's ki dosti rishtedari mein badal jaye." Teji spoke, brushing the collar of his shirt.
Balraj looked up with disappointed eyes hearing those words. Lalit and he always dreamed that their friendship will carry on for generations and that they will eventually become a family. They wished that this dream will be fulfilled by their first borns. Heer was his eldest daughter, his darling...and he trusted no one but the Junejas to give her the same love that he gave her.
Teji saw the inner turmoil in her husband's eyes and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Aap apne beti ka naam Heer raka tha kyon ki Lalit ne apne bete ka naam Prem raka tha. Heer...jo Prem ka prateek hai. Dono ke naam dono ki pehchaan hai...aur dono ki takdeer bhi...aur hum inn dono ki takdeer milana chate teh. Lekin dono ki takdeer milne se pehle dono ke dil milna bahut zaroori hai...aur Heer ka dil Manmeet ke paas hai."
Balraj sigh...knowing his wife was completely right. No matter how much he wished for Heer and Prem to marry, he will always put Heer's happiness before everything. If Manmeet is the man Heer loved, then he will accept Manmeet with open arms.
Teji continued, "Iss liye...jab Manmeet aaj aayega...aap shaadi ki tareek teek karenge...apni beti ki kushi ke liye."
Balraj then looked at his wife and smiled. This is the relationship they shared. Sometimes...they understood eachother's feelings without voicing it.
There was a knock on the door before Meher entered. "Maa...papa...Manmeet is here." Meher announced.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Heer was the first to come down to the living room. She wanted a private moment with Manmeet before her parents joined them.

She naturally went into Manmeet's arms and gave him a welcome hug. "Hi...nervous?" Heer asked.

Manmeet gave a small smile. He was conflicted. So very conflicted.

"Heer...I wanted to speak with you before dinner...it's a little important... Manmeet said, nervousness etching his every word.

"Ok what is it?" Heer asked, eyebrows frowning as concern entered her eyes.

Manmeet looked at Heer's innocent face...her eyes filled with so much love and concern for him.

"I umm...it's...it's nothing...I just wanted to say I love you." Manmeet replied, losing the courage to say what was on his mind. Heer loved him...and he couldn't tell her anything until he was sure of what he wanted.

Heer smiled and linked her hand with his, "I love you too."

Balraj, Teji, and Meher chose this moment to enter the living room. Meher greeted Manmeet with a warm hug since both were familiar with each other. Manmeet then folded his hands before him and greeted Balraj and Teji, showing his respect.

"Hello beta..." Balraj spoke, making the first move to welcoming his future son-in-law.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Next Evening
Prem walked out of his bathroom with only a towel wrapped around his waist. A few stray droplets of water glistened on his chest as he walked up to the mirror. He took the 2nd towel hanging around his neck and wiped his hair. His bangs fell over his forehead as he ran his fingers through it, styling it in his usual hairstyle.
He then dressed in casual jeans and a white shirt. As he was started buttoning his shirt, he heard his bedroom door open.
Prem turned and smiled at the most important woman in his life...his mother. His eyes naturally softened at the sight of the elder lady entering the room, love simply radiating through him.
"Are you ready beta?" Gayatri asked her elder son...her right hand.
"Just two minutes maa" Prem replied, rolling the sleeves of his shirt to his elbows as a finishing touch.
"Good...we need to leave soon...they are expecting us." Gayatri replied, brushing away some lint from Prem's shirt.
"Why did Balraj uncle suddenly call us? Is everything ok?" Prem asked, curious as to why the whole Juneja family was suddenly asked to come over.
"Pata nahin...Balraj just said that he had an announcement to make and it was important." Gayatri replied, completely oblivious as well.
Prem then got a twinkle in his eye, "Are the girls going to be there?" he asked.
"Prem...no badmaashi" Gayatri warned in a stern voice, knowing fully well her son's mischievous look had something to do with a certain Mann girl with an angelic face and a feisty nature.
"But badmaashi is our signature style mom" a male voice replied. Prem and Gayatri turned to see Preet walk in, dressed and ready to go, mischievous looks included.
Preet winked at his PB while Prem grinned back. It was well known that both the Juneja brothers had playful personalities to match devastating good looks. Preet was known as the prankster of the family...always teasing his father and cracking jokes. Prem, on the other hand, was the more mature out of the two...but maturity clashed with his quick wit and wicked sense of humor.
Gayatri simply shook her head. "I don't understand how such a sweet girl like Meher fell for such a badmaash like you" Gayatri stated, her words not holding any sting towards her other hand...her younger son.
Taking no offense, Preet wrapped an arm around Gayatri and replied, "She obviously fell for my good looks mom." Preet then blew some air on his fingernails and rubbed them on his shoulder. Preet then let out a laugh as he dodged his mother's hand almost making contact with the back of his head.
"Arre tum log ab tak yahaan ho?" The three individuals turned to see Lalit walk in. "We're getting late...and whatever Balraj wanted to talk about sounded important." Lalit continued, ushering his family towards the door.
"Hum tho tayar teh dad...bas chand nikalne ka intezaar kar rahe teh"... Preet replied smoothly, never losing a chance to make fun of his dad's bald head.
"Tu phir bola! Nalayak!" Lalit roared, ready to chase after Preet. Prem laughed and easily blocked his father.
"Rehne dho papa...Preet kabhi sudre ga nahin...Aap apna pressure high mat ki jiye" Prem said in a calming voice, diffusing his father's anger almost as quickly as Preet ignites it.
Gayatri looked on lovingly at her family's interactions as they made their way outside. The three men in her life, her two hands...and her life partner. This scenario was a common occurrence in their life, and it only portrayed the close bond they all shared with each other. Even Preet and Lalit shared a loving relationship; their way of showing it was just different.
And it was always like Prem to step between the two and stop an argument. It was second nature to him. He truly was Prem...his love always the balance between his father and brother. And she knew...one day...his love will also be a sign of complete devotion...protection...and submission...to whomever he gives his heart to.
Chapter 5
Heer closed her books and carried them over to her book shelf, putting them away for the night. With her business assignment complete, she turned towards her closet for something other than her sweat pants. A gust of wind swept into her room from the open balcony door, catching Heer's attention.
She felt a stir in the air...and an automatic pull where she felt her feet take her to her balcony. The stars sparkled outside. It was a beautiful night...like something special was going to happen. Heer saw it then...a lone star shoot across the sky. She felt the rush in her veins...the one you always feel when you see a shooting star.
Heer closed her eyes, like she has many times before, and wished. "This past year has been so amazing...I got the chance to fall in love. And I will be marrying that love soon. I wish...to always be so madly in love...and have this love grow only with time. Please...always let me feel this love...for my family...for my friends...and for him."
Prem's feet touched the grounds of the Mann estate as he stepped out of the car.
Heer opened her eyes and felt a flutter in her heart. She placed a hand over her chest and frowned. Odd...why did it do that all of a sudden?' she wondered.
Heer couldn't ponder any further because Meher's voice brought Heer out of her thoughts. "Didi you're not changed yet!? The Juneja's are already here." Meher exclaimed, seeing Heer still in comfortable sweats.
A smile naturally adorned Heer's face at the mention of the Juneja family. She loved them dearly...minus chicken legs of course. She can't blame the whole family for one sour apple.
"Let them know that I will be down in 10 minutes" Heer replied and made her way towards her closet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~'

The two families greeted each other with warm hugs. Right when Prem and Preet bent down to touch Teji's feet, Teji reached up and pulled Prem and Preer's ears, one hand on each of them.

"Ow!" the two handsome men yelped, feeling like little boys again.

"You two won the championship again and didn't bother to tell me!? I had to find out from Heer...jao...mein tum dono se baat nahin karti" Teji released the both of them and turned around, faking her disappointment.

Balraj, Lalit, Gayatri, and Meher watched on with amused looks, waiting to see what the Juneja brothers will do.

Prem rubbed his sore ear and looked at Preet. A knowing look passed between the two and they reached for Teji at the same time...leaning in on each side and placing a loud kiss on her cheeks.

"Sorry Teji maa" Prem apologized. Teji turned to look at them, cute smiles on both their faces. She tried to hide her smile.

"Dekho...Teji Maa muskura rahi hai...hassi toh passi Bhai." Preet retorted. This caused Teji to finally laugh and the bystanders soon joined in the laughter.

Once everyone settled in comfortable seats in the living room, Lalit spoke up, "So tell us Balraj...what was so important?"

Balraj and Teji shared a knowing smile. "It's a big announcement." Balraj began, "Lalit...I need you and your family to move into my house for the next month."

The Junejas gasped, a little shocked at the sudden request. "Kyon? Is everything ok?" Lalit asked concerned, thinking the worst.

"I will be needing a lot of help and support..." Balraj continued, building up the suspense.

"Please tell us already...You're scaring me." Gayatri stated, not being able to take the suspense any longer.

Balraj chuckled, "Heer and Manmeet's wedding has been fixed 1 month from today" he finally revealed. The announcement was followed by excited cheers from the Junejas. Prem was stunned for a second, before he smiled and congratulated Balraj and Teji. He's known Heer since childhood...and he's pulled her leg ever since. It was a little weird to think that the little girl he has teased for years is actually getting married.

"Since the date is fixed so suddenly and 1 month is not a lot of time...I would like for everyone to move here temporarily and help out with the wedding." Balraj concluded.

"Yaar even if you didn't ask we would have forcefully moved in and helped out with the wedding." Lalit replied.

"Sahi kahan aapne...humare Heer ki shaadi hai...dhoom dham se karenge." Gayatri added, always holding a special kind of affection for Heer.

"By the way...where is Heer di?" Preet asked, wanting to congratulate her personally.

"She should have been down by now...I'll go get her" Meher rose, but stopped when Prem placed a hand on her shoulder and rose himself.

"I'll go get her. You stay here." With that said, Prem turned to leave when his mother's voice stopped him.

"Prem! No..." Gayatri began, when Prem turned and cut her off, "Jaanta hoon maa...no badmaashi" He replied with a naughty smirk and exited the room.

Everyone left behind simply shook their head in amusement.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heer slipped the casual top over her head and stepped out of the bathroom. She went straight for her vanity mirror, not paying any attention to her surroundings and picked up her hairbrush. She heard in then...someone started whistling.
She turned to see Prem lying across her bed flipping through a magazine.
"Tum!?" Heer screeched.
"Well hello to you too darling" Prem replied casually, his eyes not leaving the magazine.
"Prem what are you doing in my room!? And what are you doing on my bed?" Heer asked, irked by his presence.
"Kyon?" Prem looked up then, his eyes twinkling with naughtiness, "Neeyat karab ho rahi hai?" He asked, his voice becoming huskier as he switched on his seductive tone.
"Chi...please Prem...in your dreams" Heer retorted, rolling her eyes.
"By the way...congratulations on the wedding." Prem commented, getting more comfortable on the bed and taking Heer by surprise. Did hell just freeze over? It wasn't common for him to say anything kind to her. Their interactions mostly consisted of Prem teasing Heer and Heer getting mad.
"Umm...thanks..." Heer replied awkwardly, not sure how to react. At least he is being nice and congratulating her...'' Heer thought.
"But I feel kind of sorry for Manmeet...he has to spend the rest of his life with a freckle face like you." Prem concluded smoothly.
I take it back...he is the D.E.V.I.L.'' Heer didn't even bother to reply to him, she simply attacked.
"Ugh! God!" Heer slapped Prem's arm and he blocked easily, grinning like a fool. "Just" *slap* "When" *Slap* "I think" *slap slap* "You are being nice!" *slap*
Prem laughed out loud and dodged a few more of Heer's attacks. She leaned over when he started moving to the other side of the bed. Prem grabbed Heer's wrist to avoid another slap and didn't realized a small tug was all it took to have Heer lose balance and tumble into his arms.
Heer let out a breathless gasp as she landed on Prem's hard chest, the fall knocking the breath off of her. She pulled back slightly and all she saw warm brown eyes...
~Tu jo chhoo le pyaar se
aaraam se mar jaaoon...~
Far away from the city, in a small village, a lady in her elder years opened her eyes from slumber. Eyes that held wisdom...experience...and the pain of love once lost. But tonight a smile adorned her face...she felt something...
"Arre Jugni...tu achanak utt kyon gayi?" Another lady asked.
"Tumne kuch mehsoos kiya?" Jugni asked, her voice holding a sense of mystery...as if she felt something no one else understood.
~Aaja chanda bahoo mein
tujh mein hi gum ho jaaoon main...~
Prem balanced Heer on top of him. Reflexes caused him to wrap his arms around her and break her fall...but he couldn't seem to pull away. Not yet...not yet...was her eyes always so pretty? They were so big...almond shaped...
~Tere naam mein kho jaaoon...~
Jugni placed her hand over her heart, "Yeh raat bohut khaas raat hai...dono ki takdeer milne jaa rahi hai...ek mohabat ki shuruwat hone jaa rahi hai...".
Jugni spread her arms out and embraced the cool air, lifting her face up at the heavens as she took in the night sky.
~Saiyyan...~
Heer felt her heart give a loud thud in her chest. Her fingers digging into Prem's biceps as he gazed at her. His eyes...my God...were they always so intense? They made you think of warm summer nights in your private bedroom...what takes place in there is left to the imagination...Heer's heart gave another loud thud...
~Saiyyan...~
"Jab apne saiyyan se pehli bar mulakat hoti hai naa...toh humare dil ki dadkhan usse ek pal mein pehchaan leti hai" Jugni spun around in delight.
"Uski dil ki dadkhan woh baat samajh gayi hai...jo woh kudh aab tak samajh nahi pa rahi hai..." Jugni then turned to look at her friend, her eyes glistening with unshed tears...tears of happiness...Yeh raat bohut khaas hai..."
A soft breeze entered the room and stirred the air around Prem and Heer. A lock of hair fell over Heer's face and Prem brushed it behind her ear with his index finger...never losing eye contact.
The stars sparkled outside. It was a beautiful night...like it knew something special was going to happen.
Prem laughed out loud and
dodged a few more of Heer's attacks. She leaned over when he started moving to
the other side of the bed. Prem grabbed Heer's wrist to avoid another slap and
didn't realized a small tug was all it took to have Heer lose balance and
tumble into his arms.
Heer let out a breathless
gasp as she landed on Prem's hard chest, the fall knocking the breath off of
her. She pulled back slightly and all she saw warm brown eyes...
~Tu jo chhoo le pyaar se
aaraam se mar jaaoon...~
Far
away from the city, in a small village, a lady in her elder years opened her
eyes from slumber. Eyes that held wisdom...experience...and the pain of love once
lost. But tonight a smile adorned her face...she felt something...
"Arre
Jugni...tu achanak utt kyon gayi?" Another lady asked.
"Tumne
kuch mehsoos kiya?" Jugni asked, her voice holding a sense of mystery...as if she
felt something no one else understood.
~Aaja chanda bahoo mein
tujh mein hi gum ho jaaoon main...~
Prem
balanced Heer on top of him. Reflexes caused him to wrap his arms around her
and break her fall...but he couldn't seem to pull away. Not yet...not yet...was her
eyes always so pretty? They were so big...almond shaped...
~Tere naam mein kho jaaoon...~
Jugni
placed her hand over her heart, "Yeh raat bohut khaas raat hai...dono ki takdeer
milne jaa rahi hai...ek mohabat ki shuruwat hone jaa rahi hai...".
Jugni
spread her arms out and embraced the cool air, lifting her face up at the
heavens as she took in the night sky.
~Saiyyan...~
Heer felt her heart give a loud thud in her
chest. Her fingers digging into Prem's biceps as he gazed at her. His eyes...my
God...were they always so intense? They made you think of warm summer nights in
your private bedroom...what takes place in there is left to the imagination...Heer's
heart gave another loud thud...
~Saiyyan...~
"Jab apne saiyyan se
pehli bar mulakat hoti hai naa...toh humare dil ki dadkhan usse ek pal mein
pehchaan leti hai" Jugni spun around in delight.
"Uski dil ki dadkhan woh baat samajh gayi
hai...jo woh kudh aab tak samajh nahi pa rahi hai..." Jugni then turned to look at
her friend, her eyes glistening with unshed tears...tears of happiness...Yeh raat
bohut khaas hai..."
A soft breeze entered the
room and stirred the air around Prem and Heer. A lock of hair fell over Heer's
face and Prem brushed it behind her ear with his index finger...never losing eye
contact.
The stars sparkled
outside. It was a beautiful night...like it knew something special was going to
happen.
