Chapter 12 ~ Closer to the truth.
And if you think that I havenât changed then maybe you need to change your profession. Rishabhâs voice echoed in her brain as she sat in her cabin waiting for her next patient - Komolika Chaubey. Prerna was irritated with everything that Rishabh had said. She didnât know why everything he said still bothered her. She hated that, it irritated her more.
Komolika smiled at Prerna for the first time. âThe sleeping pills worked so well!â She announced.
Prerna courteously smiled, âYou look better also.â she said.
âThanks doctor.â
âBut that isnât our goal remember? We have to get back what weâve lost, right?â Prerna said looking at her chart.
A smile formed on Komolikaâs face. âThatâs the goal!â
âSo how have you been since our last session?â she asked.
âBetter. Honestly, just sleeping for 8 hours everyday has made the difference. I still donât feel very hungry but I feel like I have more energy.â she informed.
Prerna wrote as Komolika spoke.
Sleeping pattern improved. Looks better. Talking more than before.
Appetite still the same. Boredom or emptiness? Check. Overeating?
âWhat about your schedule? What do you do all day?â Prerna asked.
âI am at home. I wake up, eat, watch tv, some friends come over occasionally, thatâs about it.â she said.
Prerna took notes again.
âSo letâs take our next step? Would you be willing to start office again?â Prerna asked.
Komolika looked away. âOffice?â she gasped. âI--I donât--I donât think I should.â she stuttered.
âLetâs just try?â She asked. âStart with thrice a week, alternate days and see how it works for you?â
Komolika was reluctant but she decided to listen to Prerna. âDoctor isnât it too soon though?â
âLook, we have to try somewhere. And if it's too soon, we will know the next time you come. But donât be afraid. Even if you donât do much work at the office, just go. It will really change you.â
*
The next time Komolika came, she looked even better. She was formally dressed too.
âLooks like going to office was a good decision.â Prerna said.
âAbsolutely. My father has handed over a lot of work also. So I feel useful. Also, Iâve started feeling hungry. Was there something in the medication you prescribed?â Komolika asked. She was very happy with her therapist.
Prerna chuckled. âNo, it was all you! When you work, you exert energy, that makes you feel hungry.â
Komolika nodded. âWhat next doc?â she asked.
Prerna was impressed with her progress. Very rarely did she see patients improving so fast. She has the zeal to improve. So full of life. Prerna thought.
âYou tell me this week! What do you want to do next? You seem more confident also.â She said.
âRemember getting back everything I lost?â she asked. âI want him back.â
Prernaâs eyes widened. She felt as if she was at a loss for words.
âWho?â she asked, forced to play dumb.
âRishabh Bajaj.â She announced. âThe man because of who Iâm here in the first place.â
Prerna couldnât believe what she was hearing, rather she didnât want to believe it. âWhy would you want to be with a person because of whom youâre taking therapy. What happened?â
â I used to work with dad and was very affluent in the business world. He tried to force me to sign a wrong deal. When I refused to do that he called me for coffee. He showed interest in me and drew me close to him. I fell for him. I did everything for him. I even signed that rubbish deal and then he left me. He used me doc, for that deal.â Komolika said. Her expressions didnât show any hurt. âI love him. And I will make him mine. I tried contacting him a lot after everything but he never answered my calls or reciprocated to any message.â
Prerna gulped. Seeing the ferocity with which Komolika was talking didnât seem right to her. âKomolika hold yourself together and listen to your words. He used you. You said it yourself. Then why do you still want to be with him? Did he--I mean--did you have a physical relation?â
Prerna didnât understand why it hurt so much even asking this question. She didnât want to know the answer but she needed to, for her patient. Some people developed this kind of obsession after being physically involved with the opposite sex. It was quite common.
âNo. He never took advantage of me.â She said. Prerna instinctively released a sigh of relief.
âBut doctor, I need him. I want him.â She said.
Prerna listened to her.
She took notes again:
Obsessive behaviour. Sudden boost in confidence. Aggression. - Why? Did something happen recently?
Unable to think rationally when it comes to- one person.
Other times she is relatively normal.
âKomolika, breathe. You need oxygen. Not a guy. You canât force relationships.â She tried to explain. âI am very happy with your progress. We will work on many things and your relationship with Mr. Bajaj will be one of them. You need to let go and--â
âWait!â Komolika snapped. âLet go what? Rishabh? Doctor, you said I would get back everything I lost except the company. I am holding you to that. You are going to help me get Rishabh Bajaj back. I can do anything to get what I want, and what I want is that man.â She said.
Prerna took a deep breath. She needed to diffuse the matter. Something was wrong with Komolika. She seemed very obsessive suddenly today.
âOkay, take a deep breath first.â Prerna said, trying to calm her patient. Komolika did as Prerna advised.
âSo you say you love him?â Prerna asked.
Komolikaâs expressions changed drastically. Her eyes softened and she nodded. âMore than anything.â
âWhen did you realise that you love him?â Prerna asked. She knew this was not going to be easy for her but she really wanted to help Komolika. She was in a very unstable condition.
âI was attracted to him since the day we met. He had this charm like no one else. The way heâd look at you would just burn up your whole body.â Komolika said, as if she was lost. Prerna resonated with her completely but a pit opened up in her stomach. She wanted to throw up listening to her talk about Rishabh the way she used to feel.
âWhen he asked me out I couldnât believe it doc! I must be the luckiest girl in the world I thought.â She smiled, âHe was such a gentleman. He never tried to kiss me or come too close. I tried so many times to kiss him but he always changed the subject.â Komolika was blushing. Prerna listened to her, remembering Rishabhâs words - âI did nothing to her! It was just for my company.â
âAnd then after a few weeks, he told me that he would lose everything he built if I didnât sign that deal. I couldnât watch him lose. I loved him. Thatâs when I realised it. And I signed the deal.â She said looking at Prerna. âHe left me after that. 2 days after the deal went through. He gave me no explanations, nothing, just a message. âItâs over. Sorry.ââ Komolika said, getting furious again. Prerna felt bad for Komolika.
âI thought Iâd hate him after all of it. But I didnât. I love him. I felt like I started loving him more. A man who knows what he wants, and can go to any extent to get that. I like it.â Komolika grinned. Prerna couldnât believe Komolika was actually saying these things out loud. She genuinely needed therapy. She was crazy.
âWhat if he doesnât want you? From the looks of it, he doesnât love you. Does that not matter?â Prerna asked, trying to understand her.
âDoctor, I mean when I say I can do anything to get him. I will make him like me. He has to like me. No matter what he does, main hi uske kismat mein hu.â Komolika smirked.
Prerna was taken aback by this change in Komolika. Prerna wanted to say many things but she knew it wasnât the right time. Not this week, she told herself.
âOkay!â Prerna said, snapping Komolika out of her obsessive self. âI understand you better now. I will help you.â she said.
âThank you doctor!â Komolika couldnât have looked happier. It was as if she had already got Rishabh back.
âNow, this week, letâs continue work, and try an exercise to write down 5 things you love about yourself. Do this every day before going to bed. Also, I need you to continue with your medication for one more week.â Prerna informed her as she escorted Komolika to the door.
She shut the door and relaxed. She recalled everything Rishabh had said about Komolika. She did behave very peculiarly today. Prerna was a little worried about Rishabh. Obsessions made people hurt the one they think theyâre in love with. The way Komolika spoke of Rishabh she saw him as her possession already. She needed to speak to Rishabh. The only way Komolika would snap out of this would be if Rishabh rejected her, she deduced. Yes, she would feel broken but thatâs a place Prerna could work from. In the place where Komolika was at the moment, nothing could protect her from getting hurt.

Rishabh was drowning in work. He needed an escape to get Prerna out of his head and that was only work. He would miss her another day, another time. Today he had a ton to do. He was getting everything done at full speed, when suddenly his phone rang. He cut the call without seeing who was calling. Nothing could stop him today. He was on a roll. His phone rang again. He picked up his phone to put it on silent when he saw her name flash on his screen, âPrerna?â he gasped.
He answered immediately. Suddenly, everything could wait. âHi!â he said. She hadnât called him in over a year.
âHi,â she said, sounding confused to begin with. Rishabhâs face had a small smile on it.
âAre you at work?â she asked.
âHaan.â he answered. He wondered why she was calling him. It had been a little over 10 days since they had met last and it wasnât a very pleasant meeting.
âI need to meet you.â She said coming to the point.
âDinner?â he asked.
âUh-I wonât take that long-I mean--bas kuch--â
âPrerna, itâs 8:30 and Iâm hungry. If you donât want to eat dinner with me, you can watch me eat.â he said. He hated eating alone and the thought of getting to eat one meal with Prerna, especially when she had called him, sounded perfect.
âKaha chalna hai?â she asked.
âCoco! Kamla mills.â Rishabh said. It had been so long since he had eaten a good asian meal.
Prerna was silent. âHello?â he asked again.
âSee you there in half an hour?â she asked.
âIâll leave work immediately.â he said happily. He couldnât believe she agreed to meet him at coco.
âYouâre sure?â she asked.
âAbsolutely.â he said, leaving happily.
Rishabh rushed out of work. Prerna wanted to meet him and nothing could stop him from going. He smiled as he drove remembering the last time they were in Coco. It was a special place for them.
*Flashback*
Prerna had just filled her mouth with a whole edamame dumpling and she looked extremely pleased. Rishabh watched her eat like a small child. He couldnât take his eyes off her. He held her hand in his and kissed it softly.
Prerna looked at Rishabh with blank expressions.
âWhat? Bas pyaar aa raha hai tum par, doctor psycho!â he said.
âMujhe bhi, par iss dumpling pe.â She laughed.
âAcha?â he said, reaching out and eating her last dumpling. âAb ku ki tumhara dumpling mere ander hai, mujhpe pyaar aa raha hoga na?â he grinned, raising an eyebrow.
Prernaâs jaw fell open. âYou just-- ughh!â she said irritated. âGussa aa raha hai tumpe.â she said. âMain washroom jaa rahi hu.â she said getting up. The washroom was in the basement in the corner and Rishabh was in the mood to flirt with his girlfriend. He followed behind her to the washroom. He looked around to check if anyone was there. on the floor. He waited for her to come out and pinned her to the wall.
Prernaâs eyes were wide open as she stared at him, wondering what he was upto. He looked at her intensely. He inched closer to her.
âStop it, koi aa jayega!â she said looking around.
âToh?â he asked as his finger traced the edge of her lower lip. He moved closer.
âRishabh tum--â
âShhâ he stopped her from completing her sentence. He couldnât control himself.
He leaned in and kissed her lips. The kiss was long, deep, and their first. He could feel her heart thudding in against him. Her eyes closed tightly but her body loose, almost leaning on him. His hands found hers and his fingers entwined between hers as he passionately kissed her.
He pulled away trying to regularise his breathing. Prerna leaned back on the wall, her eyes still shut. Her lips still parted slightly. Rishabh had kissed girls before but he had never felt this kind of electric currents running through his body before. He wanted to kiss her again and again and again. But he didnât think his heart would be able to take another kiss. He would definitely collapse of a heart attack. He tried to calm his heart down as he leaned over and whispered in her ear, âI bet you enjoyed it because you could taste your dumpling!â he said and walked off.
Prerna turned red as she opened her eyes. She grinned and followed behind him, smitten completely by the passion he had just displayed. Gentle, yet deep and long.
