Anjaane se woh – chapter 6
Shiv walks away from mehens presence and with the intention of walking out of kapoor house he walks the dinning area where anupam and his secretary or waiting impatiently. Giving them a disapproving glance shiv puts his employee in her place. Stopping in his very own persona shiv digs his hands into this trouser pockets and looks at the two culprits. Glaring at his secretary—"Tum yaha kya kar rahin ho?"
She has nothing to say.
"Meri secretary ho ya iski?" – looking at anupam as to prove a point. shivs disappointment leaves them both lost for words. Anupam could very well intervene yet this was no time.
Anupam had always that that being around gauri shiv would have melted in his personality even a little by shiv proved him wrong.
Tum meri secretary ho toe agar breakfast karne se fursat mil gayee ho toe kuch kaam bhi kar le??? Shivs tone is rather sarcastic which makes her feel uncomfortable yet she nodds a yes ."ji sir."
Shiv talks with a demanding edge to his words : "Mere kampde yaha se haveli tak poachadena" She nodds as she watches shiv leave. Just as he does she takes her frustration out by hitting anupam over the head with a newspaper, it totally his fault that she was in shivs bad books. Tum kuch keh sakte te!!
Anupam looks at her with surprise. "Mein itna befakuf nahin hue ke sher ke mohn mein haath dalu."
She doesn't understand yet anupam lets it be. Worrying a little more about mehen he wonders as to what mehen could have said to wake such anger in shiv?
….
Shiv enters the haveli, his eyes travel across the surroundings in search of gauri yet she is nowhere to be seen. He asks one of the passing maids yet the response he gets is negative. "Meine une subhe se nahin dekha malik shayad woh use kamre mein ho. Woah apna syadatar vakt vahi gusarti hai." The maid looks towards that store room that gauri uses as her space. Shiv looks upon with query. He thought It was an unused cupboard…walking towards it he finds that the room has been left unlocked and pushes the doors open. He unveils that private space that anpuam had uncovered on his last visit.
Walking into the small space, the surrounding red walls and wooden furniture all fit in with the haveli dcor and much to shiv surprise this room looked like it was in use.
Looking around he spots a number of canvas's, a wooden armchair propped in front of an easel. The room gave off a very soft fragrance as shiv looked around his first thoughts were gauri. No one else had any artistic talent to his knowledge yet his farther did have a traditional artist visit many a time for regular paintings.
But this space was more personal. As shiv walked across the small space he took to a corner of the room and looked upon a red material cloth that was covering the easel. Thinking over it for a second shiv unveiled it. Pulling off the cloth to his surprise he finds an finely painted portrait of himself. A kind of smile came to play on shivs face when he saw himself in art form. It was painted perfectly, just like looking in the mirror. The image potrayed shiv standing in a very power driven stance. In fact it was the way in which he was standing right now…looking down at himself he realises just how lifelike this portrait was his eyes take to a sparkle that show how impressed was.
Shivs expression took a thoughtful shape as he looked at the image. That very trademark stance even shiv found it to be a commendable effort the same look, clothing, authority and expression apart from the fine detail of his wristwatch being on the wrong hand yet that was forgiven. As shivs eyes crossed the side of the room he notices a wall, which has been covered with the aid of material. Curious as to what was beneath shiv removes the drape in surprise of what he finds he takes a step closer and sees perfectly painted scenes… a little like the way a story was told in the form of images gauri had painted the incidents in her life.
Looking at them shiv felt a rising guilt. The paintings started off with the confrontation between gauris farther and shiv, marriage. Every detail was added to these images from expression to character…there marriage…there first confrontation there smallest moments together moments that shiv never thought anything of. From gauris small interactions such as providing his blazer to moments where shiv had expressed his corcern or anger. One thing that that these painitings had in common was that they all showed gauri upset or even in tears these were evidence of five years of suffering that made shiv feel at his lowest but as shiv moved on he found something more….
From five years of marriage this is all she had. As shiv flicked through the easel all he found was paintings…illustrations of himself ..gauri had painted him over and over again.
In these past five years shiv never thought upon gauri yet gauri had filled her days with him.
Every illustration that shiv flicked through he saw himself.
There was sense of attachment to all these images, it was as if every painting was an attempt to get to know him better. In real life shiv never gave her the chance but through her paintings she had created he own portrayal of her husband.
As shiv comes to an understanding of gauris feelings for him he covers back both the wall and the easel. Just as he is about to leave the room he spots an additional painting. This one painting had been torn into two half's and lay in the waste bin.
Picking up the two halfs one by one shiv puts them together in front of himself. As exquisitely painted as the rest the paining shows gauri in shivs arms. The details show an emotional gauri in shivs embrace…looking at the image shivs face softened. This was what gauri had hoped from him. She loved him and like any wife she wanted the same from her husband. Shiv took away the two parts of the painting with him as she walked out of the room.
…………. In the surroundings of shivs room . like any other room in the haveli shivs dcor is made up of those traditional floor tiles of a back and white shade …deep wood furniture, bed in the centre of the room and an armchair.
Shiv walks the floor as he waits thinking of gauri and there is a knock at the door. As shiv turns around in anticipation of gauri he is incorrect in guessing because his secretary ria pops her head through the door instead.
"Sir kya mein andar aaskati hoon?" Shiv nodds and watches ria walk. In behind her an array of haveli servants walk in carrying hefty load. What looks to be shivs clothes his accessories, laptop. Ext is all brought into the room. Shiv looks to be thinking of something else when his secretary speaks to him….
"Sir aap kapde badalna pasand karenge."
Shiv had been wearing the only suit he had found which needed changing. Releasing what ria what was saying he takes her pick of suit and leaves to get changed.
A short time later and shiv leaves the restroom looking sharply dressed. In shade of black shivs three piece is complemented with a blue tie and a Crisp white shirt. As shiv walks out of into the room his attention is fixated on adjusting his sleeves and cufflinks to perfection. As ria sees her boss walk In she comments with a smile.
"I wouldn't worry too much about that now sir… aap ki wife in saab ka kyhal rakehnegi." Shiv gave ria a look with his eyes.
Shiv "Agar tumara kaam khatam ho gaya ho toe-"-- not letting her boss speak any further she finishes off.
Jee sir im all done agar aapki permission ho toe I'll take my leave– shiv nodds while he carries on foddering with his collor and tie..
Ria talks to shiv reassuring him, "Aapko kapoor industries ki bare mein koi fikar karne ki sarurat nahin hai mein aur Anupam sir saab kuch handle karlenge."
Shiv carries a sarcastic look as finishes off his touch ups pulls up his tie and adds his comment.
"Isibaat ki toe fikar hai miss sen." He knew anupam was more than capable of running his bussniess but he used his heart in many places shiv would think brain was required.
Shivs words were rather teasing which ria takes as a hint and then leaves.
Feeling more Shiv Kapoor now with his preferred appearance shiv approached one of the wardrobes in sight just to inspect what ria had left him with.
Despite all the attitude shiv gave her ria was good at her job. Everything was as shiv wanted. Suits were all hung neatly …on the bottom shelf stood an array of shoes on on the middle was his watches, his accessories. In a separate compartment work related files. Approving of it all shiv closes the wardrobe doors and happens to hear footsteps, the sounds of female movement – payal..chudies. He could hear gauri?
Walking towards the entrance of the room he stops at the door and outlooks on the corridor.. in a deep green shade of saari, sliky hair locks and the back of a woman who looked like gauri walking with her back to him shiv steps out into the corridor and watches her walk further. As the distance between him and her is made shiv stops her part way. – "Rukho!"
She stops in her tracks and turns. Gauri looks at shiv who stands and the distance and drops her site instantly.
A little unsure as to what he wanted of her gauri fidgets under her own posture until shiv prompts her. - "Kamre mein baat karte hai."
Gauri looks up at instance of his words but only catches the back of him as he walks into the room. Hesitantly she follows too.
Shiv walks into the room and stands at in the centre of the room waiting for gauri he casually acts in his own persona.
Gauri walks in rather timidly looking at her sorroundings with doubt she worries as what shivs wanted from her. Under a rage of fear she walks into the room with her eyes fixed to the ground and stops at some distance from shiv.
Shiv looks around surroundings before he talks and takes note of how uncomfortable gauri is. The incident yesterday proved enough reason yet he couldn't imagine the feelings of a wife who for the first time in five years was in this situation.
Shivs silence brought gauri to feel a reason for fear, she knew not how to neither react nor behave under the circumstances and kept silent. Shiv could feel gauris nerves. Gauri heard shivs presence approaching, hearing the sound of footsteps approaching her nerves hit an extent of fear. What was she to do… her husbands expectations and her fear within was causing gauri to feel tears cup her eyes. Feeling shiv approach her nerves grew yet like a pass of air she felt his presence drift away. H he walked past her.. looking from the corner of her eye she saw him walk behind her and shut close the doors of the room. Pull the lock attachement which caused her even more fear. As a result of that sound gauri turned to face shiv, her honey-glazed eyes were coated with tears which stunned shiv for a second. Shiv realised just what gauri was thinking.
He took a few steps closer to gauri and watched her hide her expression to the floor as he looked down on her and spoke.
"Mien sirf tumse baat karna chahta hoon gauri – aur kuch nahin." Shiv words were very determined. Sharp yet carried consideration. His eyes carried an lasting sense of consolation, if she was too look up at him she would see a soft understanding in those eyes.
He took a few steps back and watched over her as he spoke yet noticing that his eye contact was making her uncomfortable he tried not to look directly at her.
On the other hand Realising that shiv was not intending anything but words gauri felt a little more relaxed yet the uneasiness of being around him still remained.
She listened silently without lifting her eyes. Shiv looked over her with a complex expression. He was about to say things that were meaningful yet putting them in the right words was hard for him. Not because he did not know what to say because he didn't want to reveal anything that would hurt gauri.
"Kehne ke leighyey mein bhot kuch keh sakta hoon magar sirf yehi kahunga ke kal raat jo hua… use ke leighyey maafi chahta hoon." Gauri Is surprised at shivs apology. She never expected an apology for him. She had agreed to this and however hurt she was she would was prepared to go to any extent. Taking a glance up at shivs applogy she drops her expression when shiv makes eye contact.
"Meine kaha tha ke mein anpe pita ke leighyey kuch bhi karsakathoon aur yey baat sahi hai magar aaj muje pata chala ke dad ko kuch nahin hua woh theekh hai."
Gauri was confused by this, yes she was relieved to hear her farther-in-law was well yet questions where to mind. She listened on silenltly as shiv talked on.
"Yey saab ek bahana tha- hame ekh hota dekhna chahte hai vo." Shiv said it with so much ease yet to gauri this was no trival matter..it bought a reaction to her expression. She loved him all these years and for the first time she heard no objection in his words. Gauri was left bewelidered under her expression yet shiv moved on swiftly with no thought on the matter. As shiv spoke a more relaxed ease came to face. – "Kher Aisa phir kabhi bhi nahin hoga. Yey shiv kapoor ka vada hai tumse." Shiv spoke with a rich confidence, the way in which his tone voiced confidence it was clear that he would prevail on his words. He had nothing more to say but aware of some much about gauri yet still knowing nothing shiv could feel such a harsh wall between him self and gauri. There was so much too gauri that he knew nothing of yet It was like her love was out in the open. She carried her feelings in her aura. Every time he was around her he could feel the deference she had for him. She was wary of his presence? Uncomfortable and cautious of him yet her paintings showed a deep love? Putting it down to the distance between them shiv gets an understanding of gauri in the few minutes that he watches over her. A silence fell over the moment as shiv took view of gauri…yet not for too long realising that this silence was getting awkward shiv adds.
'Kya tum kuch kehna chahti ho?" gauri nodds a yes. Maybe she would say something that would help shiv to melt the ice a little but he was wrong in his prediction. Talking ever so hesitantly gauri wanted to leave his presence.
"Kya ..mein jaa sakti…" shiv nodds walks past her slowly and unlocks the door opens it for gauri to leave and watches her walk out.
….
Later on that, as the darkness falls on the haveli shiv walks out to the balcony of his room. Pushing open the wooden doors that opened up a exquisite space. Minima. Yet the feel was brilliant. As shiv pushed open the doors a soft sweep of wind he felt brush against him. In a more relaxed version of his appearance shiv had no blazer hence the feel of chill against his skin. Looking out up into the night sky the atmosphere swept him away. Dark yet the haveli floors beneath this high level were lit up. It was peaceful as shiv looked around he found that a room parallel to his was visible from here. A room opposite had identical balcony and more specifically he could see everything from this short distance. The room shiv was looking at was gauris, seeing gauris shadow shiv realised this. Her room was lit up yet the balcony was parted with a white material allowing shiv to only see as shadow of gauri that seemed to be walking around the room. Shiv in his own thoughts works out that if he was to speak than gauri would be able to hear from this short distance. Yet that was inappropriate and uncalled for. He watched gauris shadow..move across the room and do various things. shiv keeps watching and as it happens gauri walks towards the balcony and draws the material across very casually unknown to the fact that her husband was watching.
She happens to take a glance in the appropriate direction and sees shivs presence a little startled to see him gauris expression is a mix of surprise and anxiety. Something unexpected and as she starts going a deep said of red shiv watches. Noticing gauris reaction he has nothing much to say as gauri searches the surroundings in awkwardness shiv adds a confident "good night" his words were a little playful, he knew gauri was blushing and he made most of it. For gauri she fails to understand yet before she could string any words together shiv had left the balcony.
Impressed that the layout of the haveli was as such shiv leaves the balcony keeping the doors open somewhere deep down shiv wanted to watch gauri to get an insight into her personality yet being shiv kapoor he would never admit that to himself.
Letting the chill through to the room shiv enjoyed the breeze and the moment that had just passed. He found it a little amusing a smile played on his face thinking of gauris innocence. Walking a little distance from into the room shiv sat in his armchair which was appropriately placed with a good view of gauris room. Shiv took time and flicked through some file yet his attention was taken up by the view opposite glancing now and again shiv noticed how gauri seemed to be painting. Glancing time and time again nothing had really changed. Shiv wondered what gauris painting consisted of yet his mind had already answered the question. As time passes shiv begins to concentrate on his work…gauri
------A short distance away gauri feels a little wary of her earlier interaction with shiv yet to see her now a glow to her eyes is apparent as she paints. Knowing that shiv was close gauri couldn't concentrate on her painting nor did she want to. Her mind was filled with her husband's words, his interactions and thoughts of him. As gauri was lingers in her own world she hears a noise, someone coughing?
Painful …recurring time and time again realising that it was coming from the room opposite gauri rushes to the balcony and looking out she sees shiv in a distressed state. A concern takes over gauri.-----
A few minuets later and gauri in a hustled state rushes into shivs room. The door unlatched gauri rushes In forgetting her usual manners. Without a knock nor any words she rushes into the room with a glass of water and shiv turns to see her as her.
Looking on gauri sees shiv had already poured his own glass of water no longer in a state of discomfort, he looked fine. The moment froze as gauri felt out of place without thinking she had reacted and now she was in a position in which she need not to be. As shiv looks upon a concerned, worried persona the silence made gauri even more uncomfortable this he could see. Not knowing quite what to do now gauri stands trying to find appropriate words yet shiv known to her gesture puts down his glass and takes a view steps in her direction. Watching a unconfident posture of worry for him shiv takes the glass from gauri and thanks her. – "Shukriya" all the while his eyes determine her feelings gauri avoids looking up at him.
Gauri says nothing everything is apparent with her expression, going that shade of crimson shiv figures out that she was mix of concern and embarrassment yet beneath all was a deep feeling of apprehension for him which only a wife could have.
Unable to say very much in shivs presence gauri leaves the room.
------ As the sun rises for the next morning gauri follows her usual routine of freshening up and puja. Feeling a little more tired than usual gauri had lack of sleep last night thinking over and over again on shiv, gauri hardly knew how to behave or what to do anymore. As she looked upon her refection in the mirror…there was an unusual glow to her expression. She knew it not herself yet shivs presence was making a difference. She loved him yet she knew not how to express these feelings in his presence. He was such a persona of authority and stature that gauri couldn't quite understand how to behave, how to open up. It was one thing dreaming of her husband all these years yet coming face to face with him was something more difficult. A rare smile formed on gauris face as she applied her sindhoor today she felt closer to this symbolism than ever before.
She blushed thinking of shiv yet that was a trademark for any girl in love??? ----
As gauri finishes her morning routine she makes her way downstairs with the intention of making breakfast for shiv gauri walks down the staircase to find a crowd of people awaiting her.
These were villages.
Gauri: "App log yaha?" an older man from the group replies:
"Ji maalkin aaj malik se milna tha hame. Ham kab ka intaar kar rahe hai." The group of people seemed to be getting a little worried. There expressions showed a tiredness of wait
It was 10.30 am as gauri checked the grand clock with her eyes. From what gauri had made out of shiv she had always thought of him to be a very prompt and sharp personality. Thinking over this she is confused yet she was in no position to make judgment, she knew him very little maybe he had simply forgotten or was late.
Gauri searches the haveli with her eyes in search of a maid yet not seeing anyone she suggests herself.
"Aap rukhyey mein dekh kar aati hoon." Saying so with a smile gauri leaves a little bit hesitant of approaching shiv she had no choice but to do so…walking past an array of rooms she approaches shiv room. Again the door was partly open which gauri found strange. She took a pause before taking a step into the room she gathered herself a little. Knocking on the face of the door…gauri knocks lightly yet there is no answer. Knocking again there is still no answer.
Feeling that maybe shiv had not heard her..gauri takes a few steps into the room. From the distance that she is standing at she can only the back of shivs presence. Sitting in his chair gauri approached from the back..noticed how shiv was sat silently she wanted not to disturb him. The balcony window open a warm morning breeze gave feel to the room. Waiting a few seconds gauri thought over the right words to use and hoped that shiv would notice her presence before she had to say anything but it was not so. Gauri took a few steps closer to the chair and with some time spoke. Softly with a little uncertainty "ji woah…kuch gaun vale aap se milne aayey hai…" gauri's posture and expression conveyed her uneasiness around shiv yet she was proud that she had took up the courage to speak with a little confidence. Gauri hopes for a reply and gets none… unsure to if shiv had heard or or not she repeats "aap aarahe naa??" she still gets no response. Waiting a little more gauri is concerned at this silence, maybe he did not wish to talk to her. Taking a step closer gauri walks to a side of the chair where she can see shiv from. Realising that he had fallen asleep gauri tries to wake him. Do do it in the correct manner was also important for her…she had never been in such a situation…she spoke softly…"utheyey..subha ho gayi hai.." getting no response gauri with more hesitance slowly touches shivs shoulder yet on doing so she feels a extremely cold sensation. Looking closer she realised that he was unconscious.
…. As shiv opens his eyes he finds himself surrounded by faces. Unknown as how he got to this point shiv looked bewildered at his surroundings. Lying in bed shivs face creased in confusion. Rubbing his eyes open he sits up with strain beside him a doctor..on the other side of the bed was his secretary and sitting infront of him with a smile was anupam.
"Welcome back.!" - Smiling as ever anupam is pleased to see shiv had regained his consciousness.
Shivs utterly baffled questions , "Mein yaha kaise ayay..kya hua tha???" Looking confused shivs thoughts undoubtedly make him feel worse yet anuapm explains.
"Kal raat ko tume sukhaam ho gaya tha aur tum aaj subhe behoshi ki halat mein the." Estranged to all the happening shiv rises to a seated position pulling of the blanket his gesture shows how incepting he is of his condition.
The doctor advises shiv to take rest and not to take any extensive stress yet shiv is not pleased. More so because he was the same doctor that had lied about his farthers conditon.
Anupam adds to it "Suna tumne naa shiv, look after yourself."
Shiv doesn't really listen to anupam just grunts but he could feel his body strain in pain so maybe the doctor was right.
As shiv looks around the room he sees no gauri and anupam also notices how shivs sight is searching for something/someone. Knowing that he was looking for anupam says nothing, he rather here it from shiv than mention it himself.
As anupam is about to talk Shankar chaha brings in a plate of food. Places it in front of shiv yet anupam interrupts.
Anupam: "Ek minuet chacha yey khana aap pehele gauri ko de aayey usne subhe se kuch nahin kayay…aur yey bhi kehdejiyey ka ke shiv ko hosh aagaya hai."
Just as chacha is about to take the plate away shiv stops him.
Shiv: "Aap rehene dejiyey aur jaayey", Shankar chacha leaves.
Anupam is about to explain his reason for suggestion but shiv gets there first.
Shiv: "Gauri kaha hai..?"
Shivs secretary answers, "Puja ghar ke aapspaas dehkha tha meine unko kaafi buri halat thi."
Shivs face amounts to some concern he moves off the bed to leave .
Riya: "Kaha jaa rahe hai sir??" shiv begins to walk of yet comments with his back them.
Shiv: "sab puchna saruri hai kya.."
Anupam smiles watching shiv walk away.
