"unki" shiddat se – "his" with devotion
chapter 2
…………………..
The following morning as samar opens his eyes to the sunlight in his room. His eyes strained by sudden rays of light, he awakes sitting up, taking a glance at the clock and then around the room sees that she is no where to be seen but as happens the restroom door inching its way open shivangi makes her way out and as samars attention is drawn towards her he makes note of her appearance and how different it was to that of gauri. Dressed in what looked like a rather old fashioned churidar dress of a red, shivangi wore over her head a duppata. Sindoor and mangalsura Her looks were simple yet some what rural. A girl from a village is the judgment samar made and he was right too. There was something about her that gave of that sense very much different to gauri who was simplistic yet glowed with beauty, her idea of attire may have always been restricted to the tradtional sort of saaris and clothing but it never failed to attract samar whilst standing before him now was gauris expression but a completely different personality. Not thinking about it too much samar broke the sense of eye contact he had upon the girl and stopped his thoughts right there…moving off the sofa taking a few steps samar noticed how she was stood in that same position without movement and spoke just to break the silence. "good morning. " she looked up at him confused, as if not to understand what he was saying to her and instead of replying with anything samar would have expected..she simply lowered herself to the floor taking samars blessings whilst he watched with worry..if he was right she had not understood a word? But as per situation if someone's gesture is of such as sense its hard not to aid that person with a blessing and all the while thinking over the moment and situation samar placed his hand over her head giving her the blessing she was asking for. Later on at the breakfast table and as samar sat in his position at the head of the table the rest of the family took up there own seats expect for one.
"Baiyey shivangi kaha hai?" saying so with his evergreen cheerfulness dadajis wish was granted as shivangi walked in standing at a certain distance was welcomed by the rest of the family whilst samar kept silent eating his breakfast yet noting everything that was going on around him.
Aastha: "aayeynaa behthyey naa bhabhi" as encouraged by Aashta shivangi made her silent approach to the table and taking a seat looked around in hesitation whilst the rest of the family except samar who was busy eating were passing welcoming smiles and gayatri who was still amazed by the face which was identical to gauris. Looking around nervously shivangi noticed how each member of the family was making use of fork and knife but would she be able to do the same. Not accustomed to sitting at a dining table the shape of worry took over her expression as she picked up the fork and knife that to in the wrong hands. As she tried her best her struggle was noticeable and as slowly each member of the family took note and looked at one and other worried of samars reaction. Samar busy engrossed in his breakfast kept a note of the goings on but stayed silent. Still stuggerling to do so the rest of the family concerned by It prateek tried helping the situation. Dropping his knife and fork with a certain wink to the rest of the family he began eating with his hands and as the trend followed along the table every single member except samar did the same. Making shivangi feel more comfortable and even smile as she ate the happenings around him samar wasn't oblivious too and in-between his breakfast in somewhat silence wiping his mouth he left the table expressing his disappointment.
……………….As samar refines his look for work, dressed formally for a day at the office he takes a look at the wall clock in his room and makes a note of the time. Expecting his morning coffee and seeing that it was late. Making an asumpstion that maybe aastha had forgotten or was just busy with the children samar walked towards the kitchen to see for himself and on doing so waits at the entrance as he sees gayatri, aastha and shivangi all in the kitchen gathered around the stove. Looking like they were in the middle of something samar waited and as a result watched the goings on. As shivangi looked around a little lost to her surroundings and oblivious to all the kitchen technology around her looking at each kitchen element with curisosity she had never seen such things in her life. A microwave.stove that just looked too high tech for her she looked upon it with worry.
Aaastha: "Kya soch rahi hai babhi..samar bhaiyay ki coffee aap ko banani hai aaj"
Gayatri: "aur bhabhi careful, samar bhai sahib tode se strict hai.. unki chal thi his is ghar mein aur muje na aap ko aur bhi kayee cheesea batani hai. jaise woh aapke pehele ki bhabhi… usko samar bhai sahib ne nikal diya kyun kw who achi coffee nahin banati thi! o god kitna gossip hai.!
Aastha: chup raho gayatri aisa kuch nahin hua tha woh toe usne samar bhai ya ki coffee mein kuch dal diya tha.
shivangi looked at aastha and gayatri worried and in question not understanding the bits of English and not to mention the worry that was growing within listening to gayatris perception of samar. Looking apon her task of making coffee shivangi looks at the stove with no clue how to use it… "muje yey chalana nahin aata." Aastha stepped into help and demonstrated pushing a certain button and using its heat setting but shivangi was still confused and samar noticing from a distance wasn't too pleased with the way she was oblivious to simple things. Stepping into the moment he made his presence felt.
Samar: "aastha meri coffee kaha hai?, kabse intaasar kara hoon." all three of them felt a jumpiness at samars sudden presence, gayatr for gossping about him and him having listened in, aastha for forgetting his drink and shivangi for the perception of samar gayatri had made along with his meire presence.
Bhaya woh abhi laayi saying so aastas words were accepted and samar left the kitchen leaving all three of them in worry to as what he would have heard and more importantly what he would have made of it.
……………… As samar prepares himself to finally leave for office and say goodbye to the children he walks into there room to find shivangis presence. Seeing her talking to shanti, samar happens to listen in stopping at the door way. Sitting on her bed comfortably shanti seems engrossed in homework of some sort whilst taking …
shanti: "aapka naam kya hai?"
shivangi: "shivangi, aur aapka?"
shanti: "shanti shami kapoor!..." I mean shanti samar kapoor. Shantis innocence makes all three of them smile. Pulling an amused faced at shanties comment samar wonders why his daughter mistakes him for shammi kapoor. Shivangi: " aap kitne sal ki ho?" looking at both of them talking samar feels a little comforted thinking that maybe his family hadn't made the wrong choice and this shivangi would make a good mother.
Shanti: "cheh (6) aur aap?"
Shivangi: "pucchees sal ki (25)" on hearing so samar expression changes instantly..she is only 25. the age gap between them seemed too much for samar. At an age of 25 samar classed as being too young to be tied into what was a dead end relationship. He thoughts were always clear, if he was to remarry It would be for his children and to someone who was appropriate. At an age of 25 samar felt distort for tying a girl into relationship which would prove for her an compromise. The earlier relationships he had commited to were all with reason all with understanding and a hope of commitment from each side but this was something samar didn't agree with. How could his family agree to something like this. Unhappy with what he was hearing samar listened in further.
Shanti: aap jante ho ke aap meri mama jaisee dhikhti ho
shivangi nods yes.
shanti: "magar"
shivangi: " magar kya…."
Shanti: "aap dhodhi alag thi aapse"
Shivangi: "Kaisi thi aap ki mama?"
Shanti: "Bhohot achi"
Shivangi: "Woh meri padayee mein maadat karti thi …hame khub sara pyaar deti thi aur gaana bhi bohot acha gaati thi."
Shivangi smiles at shanti
Shanti: "Kya aap mere homework mein meri madat karsakti ho.."
Shivangi takes the book from shanti but unknowingly is holding upside down.
Shanti: "Aapko padna nahin aata" the look on shivangis face is of negativity and shanti understands but still as per child nature asks "likha…?" shivangi nodds a no.
Shanti: "Koi baat nahin mein aapko sikhadoongi…" saying so shanti gives of one of her angelic smiles which rubs off on shivangi.
Listening into the conversation and with the turn of irritation at his family within..samar leaves silently.
…………………
spending all his time throughout the day expressing his anger on his staff samar returns home from office and calls everyone expect shivangi and the children to the lounge.
Looking like samars anger was to overspill any moment every member of the family kept quite whilst samar spoke. Delving his hands into his touser pockets he looked at each member of the family with disappointment. Aiming his words at dadaji, prateek and aarti who were responsible for the relationship.
Samar: "Woh laadki..shivangi, Kya soch kar aapne use choona." Every member of the family looking at samar with worry whilst prateek tried to explain but could sense that samar was in no mood for explanations.
Prateek: "Yey kya keh rahe ho samar?"
Samar: "Tum bheech mein mat bolo prateek mien janta hoon ke this is all your doing!" knowing full well that prateek always seemed to have the bright ideas which turned out to be wrong samar didn't want to hear from him. He was more concerned about dadaji..the responsible one out of three of them. Having told dadaji over and over again that his aim was to find a mother figure for his children. Someone with the skills and heart to raise his children and fit into the grandness of the kapoor family. He thought he had made it clear that he wasn't looking for love he was looking for that certain mother for his children. Having laid down his thougnts on what he expected before letting dadaji choose a relationship for him were his words in stone. He would marry the girl without question providing she be as required. Suitable for his children and his family and that the family agreed to as well but having seen what they had done samar completed ignored as to his wishes. Feeling let down samar expressed his feelings speaking to the three of them he was deadly serious and to some extent angry.
Samar: "Meine aapko mere parivar soch kar ek simidari di thi. Kya kaha tha meine aap logo ko. Yey ke mein shaadhi karne ke leighyey tayaar hoon magar woh ladki ek atchi maa honi chahyey.
Yey ke mein use kabhi pyaar nahin karpaaonga magar taklif nahin hogi use. Meri shart thi ke woh is ghar ke laayak honi chahiyey. Mere baatcho ke laayak honi chahyiey! There was a tense pause in the room as samar stopped inbetween his words as not to work himself up too much. Looking at ashamed expressions samar could see that his family knew what he was referring to.
"Kapoor naam ke layak ho woh… aur aapne kya kiya gauri ka chehra dekhte hein rista mansoor kardiya!!" no one dared to speak up in front of samar as somewhere deep down each one of them..prateek aarti and dadaji knew that they had done the wrong thing. Thinking about the return of a possible gauri..a girl that samar may fall in love with again they had completely overlooked samars wishes of finding a mother for his children and even the aim of finding an appropriate daughter inlaw for kapoor house. Maybedeep down each of them wanted to see samar live his life to the full again and seeing shivangi with such a face had fallen for that forgetting the real thing they were after. As the silence fell which potrayed that samar was correct in predicting dadaji tried to explain.
Dadaji: "Aisee baat nahin hai. woh ek achi maa banegi samar. Pyaar degi hamare batcho ko." Samar didn't agree and looking up with the same distress had his opinions.
Samar: "Pyaar sab kuch nahin hota dadaji aur yey aap jaante hai." dadaji knew that samar was right and maybe he had let samar down on this one.
Samar: "Aapne Poocha tha use ke woh kitni padi likhi hai..? kya woh mere batcho ko unke homework mein maatat karpayeygi ?Kya usne kabhi shere mein kadam rakha hai..saroorat pade toe office chalasakti hai woh? Yaha city ki life ke baare mein kuch jaanti hein woh.?? The whole family was aware that these were shivangis weaknesses having witnessed them for thereselfs and at that point samar seemed to have a point.
"Theek se dining table pein breakfast nahin karsaki, magar samar kapoor ki patni ho kar business dinners parties attend karni hai use.Ya phir kitne saal ki hai woh?" All of them were silent because they knew that in the exitment of seeing that certain face they had forgot what was important. None of them new anything about except that fact that she looked like gauri.
"Aap mein se koi nahin jaanta?.!" Samar was beginning to think that his past relationships that he had chosen had proved to be better than this and was disaponted that even the eldest member of the family hadn't thought about such important facts. Samar to himself was sounding a little old fashioned for these were the typical questions you would ask somebody but he was talking about his children and that was the most important thing in samars life.
Samar: "25…pachees sal ki hai woh!..kabhi school nahin gayi. Unse baahar ki duniya nahin dekhi aur aap logo ne sochliya ke shes ready for such a big responsibly. use behtne ko kaho toe woh floor pein beht jaati hai, gaanon ki hai..woh.. use aaj ki koi samaj nahin hai aur usme is koi galti nahin . galti aapki hai. you should have known better. Listening to what samar had to say prateek, dadaji and aarti all felt a certain guilt within. What samar was saying in everyway seemed to correct. It was there fault. Looking at guilty expressions samar seemed to be filled with a sense of emotion and regret.
Samar: "pachees sal ki umar mein ladkiya college jaati hai. pyaar ke sapne dekhti hai, profession ke bare mien sochti hai Magar yey ek aadmi ke saath band gayi hai jo use gyaara sal bada hai..uske batche sambhal ne jaa rahin hai woh…." There was an echoing silence in the room because no body seemed to think about the age gap between them and even though that could be overlooked the reasoning that samar had made them all feel guilty. What had they done took advantage of a poor farther, a daughter, a girl who had a life infront of her and now was tied to a man who would never love her. samars words were meaningful In everyway yet no one had anything to say.
Samar: "Ab aap mujse kahiyey meri naarazgi galat hai kya. ?, Gauri jaisi dikhne se koi gauri nahin banjaata."
Looking at every single member of the family who seemed to have there heads hanging in shame samar had got his point across. As slience stuck with a sense of concern aastha spoke up with caustion.
Aashta: "ab aap kya karenge?" that was the question and worry in every bodies mind but Aaastha had the courage to express there quirey. All worried of samar ending the relationship like he had done the last three times all hoped that samars anger on the situation wouldn't take him to that point.
Samar: " Filhal toe mein kuch dino ke leighyey bussniess tour pein jaa raha hoon. ane ke baad baat karenge. Nahin ane ke baad mein faisla loonga. Meri flight kal subhe hai, aur mein chahta hoon ke tum Aashta batcho ka khyaal rakho." Aaastha seemed to be the only one who samar trusted and as per usual that was shown with his decision.
Aaashta nodding a yes confirmed her understanding. "Ji" Walking out the room in irritation, getting partway samar bumps into shivangi who stands there. Realising that she had been listening to the full conversation samar notices a sadness to her expression and answers It with a considerate glow to his eyes yet walks on out of the room silently. The rest of the family noticing this feel bad for shivangi who looks tearful and walks away…the family now left to talk between themselves all are silent feeling guilty prateek, dadaji and aarti feel resentful whilst gayatri comments sitting down on the lounge sofa gayatri as per usual as something to say "muje toe daar hai ke kahin dusri bhabhiyo ki tara ine bhi naa nikhaal de bhai sahaab." All looking at gayatri with irritation keep silent. "I mean sahi toe keh rahe hai samar bhai sahib..sirf dekhne se koi gauri bhabhi todi naa bansakta hai."
Prateek: "Bansakta hai.." everyone looks upon prateek surprised at his comment.
Aarti: "Yey Kya keh rahe ho prateek?"
Prateek: "Samar ko shivangi mein kami dikhti hai toe ham un kamiyo ko pura karenge. Ham sab mil kar shivangi ko gauri bangayeyge."
