Shiv Ki Gauri Chapter 4
Prateek smiles at Gauri unaware that this is the very Gauri that his best friend is about to marry. I will only be a minuet I need to read Dr Singhania's diagnosis for you before we go any further. He opens up the file and reads:

Name: Gauri Chatterjee Age: 25 Gender: Female Blood group: o
Patient diagnosis:
Diagnosed with chronic depression, patient in need of counselling and psychiatric therapy as a result of being a victim of rape.
Patient referred to specialist Doctor Prateek Mehta for further treatment.
Having read Gauri's report Prateek throws the file onto his desk which unexpectedly awakens Gauri from her thoughts she looks up to find Prateek looking at her, he had a apprehensive look on his face sitting with one end of his spectacles in his mouth staring at Gauri, his thought process was becoming visible from the expressions on his face whatever he was thinking was clearing taking up a lot of brain power as well as concentration.
Having realised that Gauri was waiting for his attention he dropped his thoughts and smiled.
Prateek: "So Miss Chatterjee, mein aapko Gauri keh kar address karsakta hoon? ", prateek smiles at gauri.
Gauri: "jee" gauri nods in a yes.
Prateek: "Good ab I'll introduce myself then, I'm Doctor Prateek Mehta." Prateek reaches his arm out over the desk to prompt a handshake from Gauri. Gauri reaches her hand gives a smile and shakes hands.
Prateek: "its very nice to meet you, doctor Dr Singhaniya ne tume batayan hoga ke aajse mein aapka case handle karonga." Gauri nods a yes in confirmation.
"Good, toe mein aapko batadoon ke mein is field mein professnal hoon aur meine aise kayee patients ka depression theek kiya hai. Magar aisa kar na easy nahi hoga aapko woh batein yaad karni padegi jo aapko taklif deti hai, aap samajti hai naa?"
Gauri: "I understand" terrified look becomes more noticeable on gauri's face.
Prateek: "Don't worry Gauri, daar ne ki koi sarurat nahi hai, hum jo bhi karenge slowly karenge koi pressure nahi hoga. These words ease gauri's fear a little "Thank you doctor"
Prateek again smile's at Gauri to make her feel comfortable. "Before we start..aapko kuch Tea,Coffee?"
Gauri: No thank You.
Prateek: "ok so…jo hadthsaa tumare saath hua hai Gauri" there is a pause Prateek looks directly at Gauri and makes eye contact to make a note of Gauri's reactions. "is report mein likha hai ke tumare saath balatkaar hua hai." Prateek waited for gauri's reaction.
Gauri's eyes clinched at Prateek's words, tears rolled down her cheeks and the muscles in her face tightened.
Its ok Gauri don't worry yey lo, Prateek hands Gauri a tissue.
Gauri wipes her tears "I'm sorry"
Prateek: "Its ok, aise situation mein it's understandable. If your not ready then it's ok."
Gauri: "nahin mein mere daar ka samna karna chati hoon. Agar mein apko jo hua woh batadoon du toe kya mere daar aur depresstion teekh hojayega?"
Prateek:"Well its not that simple….tume tumare fears ko confront karna hoga, ok tell me tumare depresstion ke symptoms kya hai?"
Gauri: "Muje hamesha ekh daar saa lagta hai, woh insaan se, us haathse se judi koi bhi cheese se, mere saath jo hua un yaadon se. yey saab muje bohot darate hai..rone par majbur karte hai, I start trembling yaha tak ke muje aapne aap se nafrath hoti hai jab yey sab feelings experience hoti hai tab…mein tut jati hoon."
Prateek: "Its ok..yey saab normal hai don't worry. Aise case insaan ko mental scars dejate hai…don't worry with time an treatment these feelings will fade. Aur physically…how do you feel?....are there scars?." Prateek ask in a considerate tone, prateek already knew the answer to the question but this was his way of getting gauri to open up and talk about her fears.
An embarrassed and fearful expression becomes visible on Gauri. She looks down at the floor and nods a yes while wiping her teas.
Prateek: "ok not to worry, remember what ever has happened is not your fault, you mustn't blame your self" Prateek notices that Gauri is extremely uncomfortable from the way she is conducting her self, he asks "are you ok to go on?" To which Gauri nods a yes.
Prateek:"Ok then in your own time, Muje woh hadthse ke bare mein bataon, us din kya hua?"
Prateek takes a pad of paper and pen off his desk, leans back in his chair ready to make notes.
Gauri beings to speak, her voice trembles now and again in-between
Gauri: us din mein roz ki tara kam pein gayee thi, mein us ghar mein part time house maid ka kaam karti thi. Evening ke saat baje thae aur mein time pein pohach gayee thi like usual. Ghar mein koi nahi tha….magar meine apna kaam pura kiye. Mein upar ke bedrooms mein safayee kar rahi thi…jab vo aya aur kuch ajeeb se bate ki….aur ……phir usne
There was a pause Gauri was now crying furiously, tears washed down her cheeks as she squeezed her eyes tightly.
Prateek: "its ok Gauri….that's enough you don't have to say anything else." Handing her more tissues. "Its ok your doing really well so far. Now I'm sorry but I need to ask you a few questions, only if its ok with you."
Gauri nods a yes
Prateek: I know you're scared of the person who did this to you but in order for you to overcome your fears you're going to have to talk about that person and confront him. What was his name?
Gauri: Mein uska naam nahi ley saakti….Gauri starts crying again
Prateek: "Its understandable that your scared of talking about your experience because it brings back bad memories but the person who did this to you is behind bars isn't he so you shouldn't have to worry." Gauri nods negatively at Prateek's last statement which tells him that the person who did this to Gauri has not been caught.
"This is very important gauri, your terifed of this person and the only way of pulling your self out of this sate of depression is by confronting it. Ok I'll tell you what I'll leave the room to make things easier for you." He gets up from his chair leaves a blank piece of paper and pen on the desk in front of Gauri. "You write his name of this piece of paper….take all the time you need and remember there's nothing to be scared of."
"But doctor..please I"…… Prateek leaves his office ignoring Gauri, just as he is about to shut the door he turns around and gives a concerned smile. "Don't worry I'll be back"
Gauri looks at the desk in front of her the piece of paper Prateek left stares her in the face. She closes her eyes and tries to pluck up the courage to do as Pateek had said. As her eye lids close she starts having sudden flash backs of the incidents, nothing that is clear just shades of red and a blurred face. She hears noises aggressive shouting and screaming. Sweat runs down her forehead and her face starts to clinch in fear. She could no longer take it, she wanted all this to end once and for all she opened her eyes picked up the pen on the desk, her hand was shaking she found it hard to keep her hand steady. She hesitated for a few minutes and then began to write.
Gauri was unaware of the fact that Prateek was watching her from the other side of the door and just as she finishes he walks in with a mug.
"yey appke leiye coffee , prateek smiles and puts the mug down in front of gauri"
aur yey mere leiye hai he reaches out to pick the piece of paper up when Gauri stops him. "Ek minit mene us insaan ka naam is kagaz pein likh diya hai, magar aapko vadha karna hoga ke aap us insaan ke khilaf koi action nahi leiyge."
Prateek hesitates a little and thinks "ok I promise", he picks up the piece of paper sits back in his chair unfolds the piece of paper and reads:

Prateek is astounded the expression on face changes suddenly ….Shiv Kapoor? He thinks to himself Khaee yey shiv…..magar Shiv… GAURI CHATTERJEE, ALOK CHATERJEE KI BETE?.... shiv ki gauri He drops the piece of paper on the table.
Prateek: Tume kya kha tha….tum kha kaam karti thi…?
Gauri Reply's : Kapoor Mansion
Prateek: tumhe yaad hai…ke us din date kya thi….?
Gauri Reply's: 15th August
Prateek: Are you sure?
Gauri Replys: Yes
Prateek sits in silence and thinks to himself….Agar yey shiv ki bhaat kar rahi hai then that's imposible shiv aur rape!......Kuch na kuch to hai. Yey yahi gauri hai jike shiv se shadhi hone wali hai….Victim of Rape. Us din shiv ne bataya tha ke mehen uncule uske shadhi karvan chate hai…they think shiv ne uska rape kiya hai,This is imposible kuynki us raat shiv mere saath tha toe…phir ….. yey kaise ho sakta hai
After a long pause Prateek asks: "How can you be sure ke yeyhee insaan tumara gunergar hai?"
Gauri:Us din mein unka hi room saaf kar rahee thi…aur mene use phele bhi dekha hai wohi insaan hai.
Prateek: "Ok tumare paas koi suboot hai , us insaan ki koi cheese"
Gauri: Mere ekh pendent , ek om pendent hai hai jo us din se missing hai. ..Aap mujse yey sab kuyn pooch rahe hai….aap toe mere deppresstion ka treatment kar rahe hai naa…toe yey saab.
Prateek still thinking to himself: It doesn't make sense how can shiv be responsible when..he was with me at that time. Yey samar ki bare mein baat toe nahi kar rahee na?????
Gauri: "Why are you asking me all these questions doctor, yey saab aap kyun pooch rahe ho"…. Gauri starts to feel fustated and more upset then before. She stands up to leave.
Prateek: No…wait gauri ….i'm asking you all this because muje lagta hai ke tumhe koi galat fayme huee hai.
Gauri stops and gives Prateek questioning looks
Your blaming the wrong person shiv kapoor jise tumare shadhi hone wali hai..is my friend and us raat woh mere ghar pe tha toe woh tumara gunegar kaise ho sakta hai!
Prateek: Shayad tum nahi janti ke shiv ka ek twin brother hai samar!
Gauri was shocked how did prateek know all this "Kya aap kehna chate hai ke uske bhai ne….."
Prateek: Yes.
There's a pause…Gauri and Prateek are both looking at each other.
There's a knock at the door.
Gauri calms her self and wipes away her tears. Prateek: come in"
Alok opens the door, "doctor mein gauri ka papa hoon kya mein….."
Prateek: "yey sure why not..please come In " Gauri runs to her dad as he walks in and gives him a hug, "kya hua beta….its ok". Alok looks at Prateek when he gets no answer from gauri.
Prateek: "I think she's a little upset, I'll leave you two alone for a while. I'm sure Gauri will explain."
Prateek leaves his office shuts the door behind him pulls his phone out of his pocket and rings Shiv.
Shiv picks up…
Shiv Hello
Prateek: shiv listen to me this is important ok, gauri ke bare mein. Tum yaha jald se jaldi city hospital phocho aur samar ko bhi saath leiye kar ana.
Shiv: Magar kyun…
Prateek: I can't explain on the phone, you just do as I say.
Shiv: Ok I'm coming
A few minutes later alok comes out of Prateeks office and prateek is waiting outside his room.
Alok: Doctor yey gauri kya kehe rahi hai …shiv aapka dost hai aur uska bhai..?, yey saab kya hai.
Prateek: yey bilkul sahi hai, aap shiv ko gunegar mankar uski shaadi gauri se karva rahe hai, magar shiv is not responsible. Woh us raat mere saath tha.
Alok: yey kaise ho sakta hai…gauri ne toe mujse kha tha ke shiv ne uske saath….
Prateek: I know but use galatfaime huee hai, woh samar ko shiv manrahi hai. Dekhye uncle is problem ka ek he soloution hai ke gauri khud shiv aur samar ko dekh kar bataye ke uska guneghar kaun hai. Is leiye meine dono ko yaha bulaya hai. I am sure ke shiv ka is hadse se koi taluk nahi hai.
Alok: magar gauri yey kaise karegi, tum jante ho ke woh us hadse se judi har baat se darti hai toe phir woh unka samna kaise karege.
Prateek: Use kar na padega, aur ek na ek din to samna kadna padega, uski toe shadi hone wali hai shiv se toe samna toe karna hi padega. This is the only way woh zindagi phirse normal tarekey se jeesakti hai, aap nahi chate hai ke uske gueghar ko sasa miley.
Alok: Chata hoon bete…mein chata hoon ke woh kush rahe, saab kuch teekh kar ne keliye toe uski shaadhi karna chata hoon. Prateek noticed sadness on Aloks face.
Prateek: Don't worry uncle, saab kuch theek hojayega aap gauri ko samjadeejyega ke use sirf dekh ke batana hai…shiv aur samar ke bhech mein ke uska gunhegar kaun hai..
Alok: mein samaj gaya…I'll try my best
Samar and Shiv walk towards Prateek's office, Alok makes note of them and quickly walks back into Prateeks office.
"Hey shiv!" Prateek shouts down the corridor.
Shiv: Kya baat hai, what's so important that can't wait. Shiv gives a frown, Prateek gets the impression that Shiv much rather be somewhere else.
Prateek: "Come with me", Prateek looks at Samar "you don't mind do you Samar."
Samar: "No I don't mind at all, why the hell you need me." He takes his whisky bottle out from his pocket and starts drinking from it.
Prateek gives Samar an awkward smile which Samar ignores.
Prateek takes Shiv into an empty room away from his office the room is identical to prateeks office.
Prateek "Sit down Shiv"
Shiv: "no you tell me what's going on…why have you called me here what's wrong, you were saying something about gauri."
Prateek: "yey look shiv don't get stressed but I think I know why your dad is forcing you to marry gauri."
Shiv: "how would you know when I don't"
Prateek: look shiv, Gauri came to see me today, her doctor referred her to me. I think you should sit down. (to which shiv gives a annoyed look and then finally sits down.) I studied Gauri's report and found that she has been a victim of rape.
Shiv: RAPE, have you gone mad! (shiv stood up from his chair)
Prateek: listen to me shiv, that's not the whole story…I'm afraid She thinks you are to blame .
Shiv: PRATEEK, MEIN AUR USKA RAPE!… YOU HAVE LOST THE PLOT. Mein toe usko janta tak nahin sirf uski photo dekhi hai that's it. HOW DARE SHE! Shiv was going bright red with anger.
Prateek: calm down shiv, I know you are not responsible for this and it can be proved. The night of 15th August you were at my house remember. That's when the incident occurred so it proves it wasn't you.
Shiv: So she's lying then!..its just a story shes made up..mere paise chatee hai!
Prateek: No shiv she's not, I've handled similar cases and I know when someboady is lying.
Shiv: but how's that possible, you said it your self I was with you..that night.
Prateek: I think its just a misunderstanding, us din samar ghar pein tha naa?
Shiv: yes you mean Samar ne yey…..and she thinks It was me!
Prateek: yes
Shiv's drops down and sits back in the chair. "It makes sense, SAMAR! They all want me to marry gauri because they think I raped her. Dad's told me to rectify my mistake but it's not my mistake its Samar's. That's why he acts so strange, talks about gauri like that…
Prateek interrupts "do you know anything about an ohm pendent, gauri lost it that night.
"Hah samar ne muje diya tha…to give it to bhabhi but when I asked bhabhi she didn't reconise it….is ka matlab!!!!!! HE'S SICK!...MEIN USE MAR DALUNGA!!!!"
Shiv gets up to walk out of the room when prateek stops him.
Prateek: "wait shiv aise nahi," Shiv stops
Shiv: "So kya karoon mein!!!! usne….us ladki ko!!!...mere dad muje ek rapist samajte hai because of him"
Prateek: "I know shiv but this is not the right time. Look shiv, gauri and her dad are in my office right now and samar is outside. If gauri identify's samar as the one who Is responsible for what happened to her then samar will go to jail. Look all we have to do is bring both you and Samar in front of gauri and she'll pick out samar…End of story."
Shiv: "And what if she doesn't, she blames me instead then what"
Prateek: "she won't trust me,"
Shiv: "And if she does?"
Prateek: "then that's just a chance we will have to take"
Shiv: "if you ask me…..he needs to be taught a lesson!"
Prateek: "look shiv calm down.. all you need to do is come outside and make conversation with Samar. I'll bring gauri and ive called to police as well."
Shiv: "OK" shiv straightens himself up and tries to hide the anger on his face.
They both walk out of the room together prateek walks towards his office and shiv walks towards samar who is sitting in the waiting area drunk.
Prateek walks into his office to see Alok and gauri sitting talking. Gauri looked much more comfortable and calm now..he really didn't want to beak up a father daughter moment but it had to be done.
Prateek: "sorry to interrupt, are you ready…shiv and samar are both outside. Don't worry all you have to do is point out who was responsible for what happened that night, you don't have to come face to face with them, you can take all the time and space you need"
Gauri nods "thank you" prateek and gauri walk out of the office out into the corridor. Gauri see both samar and shiv at the end of the corridor, she closes her eyes tihghtlty and then opens them. Prateek: Its ok gauri take your time.
Shiv and Samar are sitting next to each other at the end of the corridor, you can clearly see each of them from where gauri is standing and a significant difference in appearance could be seen. The two Shiv in a neat tie and shirt and samar with a rugged drunk look.
Gauri lifts her arm up and points It in the direction of shiv and samar, beads of sweat run down her forehead and the fear inside her becomes stronger then ever before.
Gauri: "woh usne kiya " She points at samar.
Prateek gives a relieved smile, a police officer walks in just at the right time to hear gauri.
Prateek: Arrest that man please, constable.
Gauri runs back into prateek's office in tears to her dad and hugs him. "muje ghar jana hai baba "
Alok: "ok beta, mein abhi aata hoon"
Outside in the corridor the police officer arrests Samar while Prateek and shiv watch. The officer wraps handcuffs around samar.
Samar: "Meine kya kiya hai…leave me!"
Police officer: "you are under arrest for the rape of gauri Chatterjee"
Samar: you have the wrong person!
Shiv can't handle his temper any longer, he grabs Samars collar and gives him a slap. YOU MAKE ME SICK, if it was up to me you would be dead ….MUJE TUMKO BHAI KE KAR SHARM ATI HAI.
Prateek: leave it shiv….Prateek pulls shiv away from Samar and the police officer takes Samar away.
Shiv: Thank god that's over, I can't believe it my own brother!
Alok walks out into the corridor towards Prateek and shiv who are still standing there talking.
Alok looks at shiv and put both hands together. "hume maaf kardo beta, humne tumko galat samja…"
Shiv: "no its okay uncle…is mein naa aapki galti hai na gauri ke, IM SORRY jo hua samar…ne jo keiya im sorry."
Alok interrupts its ok beta….agar tum yey shadhi….nahi
Shiv cuts of alok and asks "gauri kaha hai…" his eyes start searching for gauri
Alok: "beta woh andar hai.. office mein, woh …abhi bhi thodi upset hai"
Shiv: "use khedejyega ke Im sorry aur hum kal melige, humari shaadhi mein …if that's ok with her"
Alok smiles at shiv "thank you beta…mehen ko tum pein naaz hoga"
Shiv: ab muje jana chaye khar pein saab pareshan hoge. Namaste uncle, bye prateek with that Shiv leaves.
Just as shiv leaves gauri looks outside of the room to make sure he's gone and then walks down the corridor towards prateek and her dad.
Prateek smiles at alok…. "meine aapse kaha tha everything will be ok."
Unaware of gauri's presence Alok asks: "magar beta gauri…ki halat"
Prateek: "Gauri teek ho jayegee, usko vakt aur apno ki surat hai", Prateek sees gauri
though the corner of his eye and comments "talk of the devil and all that" he smiles at gauri.
Prateek's comment puts a smile on gauri's face. It was obvious that she was much more relaxed now the truth about the incident had been uncovered and samar was behind bars
Gauri: "thank you doctor"
Prateek: "No need to thank me, it was you that put in all the effort…but its not over this is just the beginning I'm afraid your going to have to come for a check up daily until you recover fully."
Gauri nods a yes
Alok looks towards Prateek, "toe hum chale, mein gauri kya khyal rakhoonga…don't worry and kal ana mat bhoolna…bye" Prateek waves them good bye and they leave.
