Chapter 16
Recap: shiv and gauri come home from the mandir to unexpectedly find alok there. Shiv questions alok on his reason for being there to which alok says he was wanting to speak to mehen about something important and quickly changes the subject and leaves. From the way alok is behaving gauri sensing that something is wrong. Shiv and gauri are making there way uptairs when mehen stops shiv telling him that he wants to have an important conversation. Shiv returns worried and on entering finds gauri there. Gauri tries to explain her reason for being there but shiv overlooks it telling her that there is no need to explain. In the moring gauri makes an quick escape downstairs while shiv is sleeping. In doing so she overhears dadaji and mehen talking about a raaz, on approaching mehen..dadaji changes the subject which makes gauri feel like there is something that is been hidden. Making her way to the puja ghar gauri bumps into dadai who notices that gauri was not wearing her mangalsutra and asks her to put it on..gauri realises that in the rush to avoid shiv she had forgotten It. Uptairs shiv is talking to an office member of staff..shouting at him for a loss of contract, gauri makes her way into the room conscious of shivs temper she tries to find her mangalsutra quickly but fails. Shiv had found it and used it to tease gauri. Shiv tells gauri that he is going to be away for a few days and in return gauri asks him if she could stay at aloks house for a few days and shiv agrees. Later on mehen is alone contemplating on something in worry and rings shiv and tells him how he is unhappy on the way shiv had let gauri visit alok and in doing so there secret could be revealed. Shiv assures mehen that nothing of the kind would happen and even if it was to what they were hiding would not harm anyone. ………………………..
Mehen is sitting on his own in kapoor house lounge..staring emotionality at the picture of his wife the expression on his face begins to show an emotionally drowned expression.
"Aaj tumari bohot yaad aarahi hai nikhla
Agar tum yaha hoti toe shyaad yey saab..yey saab nahi hota"
Kash tum hame chod kar nahi jaati.
The sadness was clear on mehens was, there was distress a loneliness which was softening having looked at the picture in front of him. Mehens deep thinking was interrupted when gauri made her way into the room.
Gauri: "bade papa aap aise akele?? " hearing gauri mehen changed his expresstion hiding his sadness behind a smile.
Mehen: "Hah beta, woh saab log bahar chale gaye toe meine socha kuch vakt akele hein gusar leta hoon."
Gauri noticed how mehen was sitting on his own looking lost, like he had been crying?
Gauri: "kya baat hai papa aap theek toe hai naa?"
Mehen: "Hah muje kya hua mein bilkul theek hoon, mehen" gives a more expressive smile so gauri wouldn't spot his sadness. Tum ghar jane se pehele mere ek kaam karongi beta?
Gauri smiles, "jee, kahyey?"
Mehen: Atcha yaha betho… mehen gestures gauri to come and sit next to him and gauri does so.
Mehen: "mein chahta hoon ke tum kaya ko ghar ane ko kaho"
Gauri: Ji?
Mehen: "Tum toe janti hein ho ke yey is ghar ki bahu hai, aur use badkar meri beti manta hoon mein use..paar woh ghar ane keleye mana kar rahi hai.
Shyaad use lagta hai ke joe tumare saath hua, voh.. mere matlab ke uske baad woh tumare aur shiv ke zindagi mein koi dakhal andazi nahi karna chahti. Magar is mein uski koi galti nahi hai…aur mein use apne ghar mein dehkna chahta hoon, hamare ghar mein dekhna chahta hoon. Tume toe koi etraaz nahi hai naa??, kaya…
Gauri interrupts mehen.
Gauri: "nahi muje kya itraaz hoga papa..joe mere saath hua woh" gauri stops in-between her words and a sadness becomes apparent on her face.
Gauri: Magar mein kaise??
Mehen: "Kyun nahi gauri, agar tum use kahogi toe shayad woh maan jayegi..aur viase mein shiv ko kehne wala tha, kyun ke woh uski baat kabhi nahi taalti magar, woh nahi hai toe.
Toe tum mere yey kaam karogi naa beta?"
Gauri: "Ji papa"
Mehen: "Thank you beta" mehen gets up from the sofa and beings to make his way across the room when gauri stops him.
Gauri: "Bade Papa.. woh"
Mehen turns around
Gauri: "Woh unka phone..?"
Mehen looks at gauri questioningly and then clocks on " Shiv, Hah meri use baat hue, woh theek say pahoch gaya."
Mehen smiles at gauri's behaviour... she was missing him already?

Gauri made her way to the entrance of flat number two, the lady at the reception downstairs had said kaya was staying. Gauri stared at the wooden door for a second hoping that this was the right place and then rang the bell. A few minutes of waiting and then the door was opened.
It was kaya dressed in her familiar baby pink sari looking overly surprised and happy to gauri there.
Kaya: "Gauri tum yaha!, andar aaon naa" gauri was happy to see it was kaya and not some random person and this was shown on her face in the form of a relieved smile. Entering the flat gauri is faced with a small yet stylish room, the flat seemed to have all comforts.
Kaya: Betho naa gauri, mein tumare leiye kuch lati hoon..chai, coffee??
Gauri: Nahi kaya, muje kuch nahi chahiyey.
Kaya was not having any of it and began to walk into the kitchen and gauri followed her into the kitchen and she began to open up cupboards.
Gauri: "Kaya, rehne doe naa"
Kaya: "Vaise tume toe kuch nahi chahyey par shiv ki tara muje bhi apni chai coffee time pein chahiyey. Kaya smiled at gauri as she took out a mug and made her coffee."
Kaya: "Tum theek ho naa gauri, papa ne bataya tha ke shiv delhi gaya hua hai..miss karahi ho use."
Gauri just smiled in response and kaya took out a second mug and began to pour a second cup of coffee whilst gauri tried to stop her.
Gauri: "Nahi muje…"
"Nahi gauri, tum yaha peheli baar ayi ho aise kaise chalega." Gauri just gave in and took the drink and both walked into the lounge area and sat down at the table in the corner of the room.
Kaya: "So let me guess, papa ne tumhe behja" gauri looked at kaya confused at how she knew…?
Kaya: "Hah woh puri koshish kar rahe hai ke mein ghar vaapas aajaaon, magar mein nahi ana chati gauri."
Gauri: "Kyun, Kahin meri bajese toe.."
Kaya:"Nahi gauri aisi koi baat nahi hai magar muje yey saroor lagta hai ke jo tumare saath hua woh. I mean to say ke muje nahin lagta ke mein waha reh paoongi."
"Tum jaanti ho gauri, yey flat, yey flat samar ne muje gift kiya tha..sab kuch hone ke baad bhi mein kahi naa kahin une aaj bhi bohot pyaar karti hoon."
Aur agar mein us ghar mein gayi, toe tumari ghunegar keh longi..jisne tumare saath itna kuch kiya..mein aaj bhi use..pyaar karti hoon, tume har pal us hadse ki yaad dilayeygi
Sama……. Kaya was just about to say samar when she noticed a dreaded fear on gauri's face. It was incredibly disturbing that even his name was scaring her.
Kaya: Sorry gauri woh
Gauri: its ok ..magar Aisa kuch bhi nahi hai, woh tumare pati hai..aur is vaaje se tum aaj bhi use pyaar karti ho is mein tumari koi glati nahi hai. Aur mere hein nayi ghar valon ka bhi maana hai. Woh tumhe bohot miss karte hai.
"Mein janti hoon gauri aur mein bhi une bohot miss karti hoon." Kaya got up from where she was sitting at the table and walked over to the wall parallel to the dining area,the wall was filled with hangings mostly framed photographs and seeing kaya's expression softening in sadness as she walked over to them gauri followed her.
Kaya: "Tum janti ho gauri jab mein doe sal ki thi badepapa ne muje godliya tha, mein toe yey tak nahi jaanti ke mere asli mata pita kaun hai, mein kaha se aye hoon..
Papa muje kapoor parivar mein layey aur muje sab kuch mila maa papa ka pyaar… Dada, dadi ..bhai ka pyaar, yaha tak jeevan saathi bhi.
Yey tasvif dekh rahi ho" kaya ran her hand over an old photograph yey rakhi ke din. The picture was of a little girl with pig tails who looked to be kaya but the boy.. Gauri looked at the picture surprised.
Kaya: Tum janti ho gauri shiv mujse umar mein bada hai, aur shayad tum bhi.
Gauri looked at kaya confused and realsised the boy in the picture was shiv?.
Kaya: Jab se meine riston ko jana hai tabse mere phele aur sabse keemti rishta bhai behen ka hai. Shiv ne hamesha mere khayal rakha hai, aur mene bhi unka..aaj bhi mein uski baat nahi taal sakti.
Magar vakt ke saath rishte badal gaye, shiv mere leiyey hamesha ek bade bhai ka rishta raha hai jise mein apna adarsh manti thi..abhi bhi manti hoon.. magar samar mein.. une pyaar karti thi. Woh meri zindagi mein baad mein aye..jab shiv apni studies ke leyiey london gaya tha.. haamesha jagadte the ham log aur woh ek din pyaar mein badalgaya aur ghar valon ne hamari shaadhi karvadi.
mein shiv ki choti behen se uski bhabhi ban gayi. Kush thi mein muje woh insaan mila jise mein pyaar karti thi… magar vakt aur business mein loss ne un mein karvahat bhar di aur saab kuch vahi khatam ho gaya.
Gauri was shocked to here all this, that kaya was younger than shiv, younger than her infact and she had been through so much. Looking at kaya gauri noticed a deep sadness in her eyes which were being conveyed in the form of tears….

Gauri walked out of the building rather upset with what she had heard from kaya, she couldn't believe that kaya had been through so much and there was no way after hearing all that she could force her to come back home. She was too overwhelmed with sadness, gauri had left her alone as she had asked but she was worried for her and couldn't stop thinking about what kaya had told her.
Gauri walked towards her car which was waiting outside and got inside.
Driver: "Kaha jana hai memsaab"
Gauri: ghar chale
Gauri entered kapoor mansion to find it again empty and this time even mehen was not around, there was only ramu kaka who was busy cleaning.
Gauri: kaka, apne bade papa ko dehka
Kaka: Ji woh abhi office gaye hai
Gauri thinks to herself: Office gaye hai, muje unse kayak ke bare mein baat karni thi.
Gauri: Atcha koi baat nahi hai, jab woh toe aye une keh deejyeyga ke mein baba ke yaha jaa rahi hoon aur une baad mein phone kar loongi.
Kaka: Ji
Gauri makes her way upstairs and beings to pack her back when the phone rings and she picks it up.
Gauri: hello, the caller on the other end hangs up and gauri also puts the phone down and carries on with packing when the phone rings again and gauri walks over to it and picks it up.
For a second time the caller hangs up. Gauri starts getting irritated as well as a little worried.
"kaun hai joe yey baar baar phone kar raha hai"
And the phone rings for a third time this time someone answers.
End caller: hello mam mein bank of India se bol raha hoon..can I interest you in a new credit card?
Gauri: no thank you!!! Muje koi credit card nahi chahiyey and please phir se phone maat kejiyey! Gauri put the phone down she was really getting irritated, it wasn't like she had enough problems of her own and some person ringing repeatedly to promote a credit card.
The phone rang again and gauri had lost all her patience.
Gauri: "Kitni baar kehna padega ke yaha maat phone kijieyey, Aap ke samaj mein nahin ata muje koi credit card nahi chahiyey!!!! Aur dobara phone kiya toe police mein complaint Likhvaoogi !!!!!!"
"Apne pati ke khilaf complaint likhvovgi?"
It was then gauri realised the person on the phone is shiv, she was shocked..she had done it again. Firstly in the coffee shop where she blamed him for the coffee spill and took her temper out on him and now, thinking he was some salesman. The same nervousness came over gauri when she heard shiv's voice she began to go red with awkwardness.
Shiv: mein nahi janta tha ke meri patni inta ghusa bhi karti hai..
On the other hand shiv was sat in some office behind a desk staring at a picture of gauri with a smile playing on his lips as he listened to gauri.
Gauri: "Nahi woh…ji woh actually muje laga ke koi aur hai ..woh"
Shiv: "Aw toe kisi aur ke phone ka intaazar ho raha tha"
Gauri "Ji..ji nahi aise koi baat nahi hai"
Shiv: "Vaise tum kehti ho toe phir phone nahi karonga"
In teasing gauri shiv was making out like he would seriously put the phone down.
Gauri: "Nahin woh …aap" gauri began to stumble on her words and at the other hand shiv was enjoying the response to his teasing.
Shiv: "actcha theek hai..Vaise meine yey poochnne ke leiye phone kiya, tumara appointment kaisa raha aur tum to baba ke paas rehne ne jaarahi thi naa?"
Gauri: "Ji theek raha aur mein abhi jaa rahi hoon" gauri answered in a very low tone.
Shiv: "good ab meri baat dhyan se suno gauri, meine tume ek raaz ki baat batana chahta hoon"
Gauri: Ji? Gauri beings to think to herself: raaz ki baat kahi woh joe papa aur dadaji subhe baate kar rahe the kuch chuparahte??? Baba ke bare mein.
Shiv: "mene tumse jhoot bola tha gauri"
Gauri: "Ji??"
Shiv: "Mene tumne yey poochne keliye nahi phone kiya ke tumara appointment kaisa raha, actually subhe tume kuch zaroori baat kehna bhool gaya"
Gauri : "Ji kahiyey"
Shiv: "Tum kisi ko nahi kehzakti"
Gauri: "Ji"
Shiv: "keh doon"
Gauri: "ji"
Shiv: "I love you"
Gauri was feeling really embarrassed and going bright red whilst shiv was sitting amused by the silence with a big grin as he leaned back in his chair.
Shiv: "Kya hua.. yey khamoshi sun kar yey samajloon ke tum ne bhi muje I love you keh diya.."
Shiv: "Magar ek baar tumare mhu se soona chahta hoon gauri"
Just as shiv had finished his words..his secratery walked into his office carrying a mobile phone, "Sir aapke leiye mr gupta ka phone, its urgent."
Hearing the secretary in the back ground gauri's expression relaxes feeling relieved that maybe she had been saved from the situation.
Shiv: "is baar toe batch gayi but next time nahi choduga..jana padega, apna khyal rakhna..bye"
Gauri: "ji..woh"
Shiv: "Hah kaho gauri" an anticipation filled smile came to play on shiv's face as he heard gauri's voice, maybe she would surprise him and tell him that she loves him
Gauri: "Woh aap… Aap apna khyal rakhyey ga"
Shiv amused by gauri's comment silently put the phone down with a smile whilst gauri was relived that the conversation was over..still feeling a little nervous from her conversation with shiv she was blushing and hidden within all that an embaressed smile took shape on her face as she puts the phone down.

Gauri made her way firstly to the mandir and not seeing alok there she decided to go home. Throughout the her journey she had been going through the same things in her mind.. mehen and dadaji's conversation about her dad.. her dads words last night:
shiv ko kabhi shikayd kar ne ka moka nahi dena beta..tu nahi janti beta tu kitni naseeb wali hai jo tumhe shiv jaisa pati mila.
joe faisla tumne aur alok ne leiye tha..woh bilkul sahi tha Aur alok bhi ghud yehi chahta tha…toe aaj tum itne saalon ke baad aisa kyun soch rahe ho."
kal muje uski ankon meine woh udasi dekhi babuji, jo salon se woh chupata aya hai..woh bilkul akela ho gaya hai.
There was something wrong but she couldn't work it out. Making her way to the entrance of the house, she felt happy to be home..she would be able see her dad who she missed incredibly and not to mention worried about, she would finally be able to ask him what it was that was concerning him.
Gauri knocked on the door and a few minuets later hari kaka opened the door. Gauri was so happy to be home and the expression on her face said it all.
Gauri: Kaka, baba kaha hai???, use kehdijeyey ke mein unke pass rehne ayi hoon. Gauri entered the house looking for her dad.
"Baba kaha hai?"
Kaka: "woh apne kamre mein hai beta."
Kaka: Gauri beta, tumare baba shayaad tume andar nahi anedenge
Gauri looked at kaka, confused.."kyun?"
Kaka: Patanahi beta, woh kayee dinon se kuch kohye khyoe se hai..udas, yaha tak ke unone mandir ka kaam bhi kuch dino se nahi kiya.
Gauri: Kyun kya hua une?? A more expressive worry became apparent on gauris face.
Kaka: Pata nahi beta, kuch dino se aise hein udaas rehte, agar tum bhat katongi to shaayad…
Gauri makes her way to aloks room before kaka could complete his words, maybe this was as serious as she had sensed, there had been many a time when things were not going right but her dad had never reacted in this way. Gauri was standing outside aloks from and was just about to knock on the door when seeing it part way open she changed her mind and instead opened the door slowly and entered silently..the room as she had always remembered was simplistic and minamilst in its charactaristics, old wooden furnature a cupboard and desk which her dad would sit and write at… looking around gauri felt the essence of her childhood coming back to her…
Alok was sitting on the bed gauri noticed how depressed he was looking. Sitting staring at what looked like an photo album, he was crying? His face or what she could see of it was showing signs of shere distress, he looked like had slept for days. Gauri walked over closer to where her dad but even then he wasn't aware of her presence quietly sitting down next to him gauri looked at the photo album he was so emotionally staring at.
Gauri: Kya baat hai baba, aap ro rahe the? It was then alok realised gauri's presence both surprised by it he quickly brushed away his tears and brought a smile to his face..trying to hide his sadness.
Alok: Are gauri beta, tum kab ayi
Gauri: Abhi jab aap in photo ko dekh rahe the…
Alok: Aajcha, woh kaye din se purnani tasvire nahi dekhi islye mene socha ke kyuna….
Seeing the depression on Aloks face and knowing that he was hiding it from her Gauri interrupted alok, "aap roh rahe the naa baba?"
Alok: "Nahi, aise koi baat nahi hai beta..woh mein abhi aya, woh hari kaka ko kehta hoon ke tumare leiye kuch..chai.."
With that alok makes an excuse and leaves the room before gauri could stop him.
"mein janti hoon baba, ke aap mujse apna dard chupa chahte ho magar muje aapki ankon mein vo udaasi saaf dikhay de rahi hai."
Gauri was becoming increasingly worried, she knew there was something wrong and her dad was never going to share his problems so easily. Looking around trying to find a soloution that would provoke alok to open up to her gauri's eyes fell on the photo album that alok had been looking at. It sat lying on the bed..gauri had seen this very photo album many a time and maybe that was just it..old memories, maybe her dad was just contemplating over old times.
"Shaayad aap maa ko miss kar hahe hai baba"
In saying that gauri opened up the photo album and began slowly flicking through the photographs. They were all familiar pictures of herself and mum and dad. These were the only memories she had left of her mother..memories which seem faded with time. Looking through each photograph a unique smile came to her face and in some cases sadness in thinking that this was all she knew of her mother, faint memories and old photographs.
Gauri went through a number of pictures until she came half way through the album where sat a loose picture photograph which was sitting face down on its back. Gauri picked it up turning it around and seeing it a astounded expression took shape on her face.
It was a similar picture to the one she had seen at kaya's house but this one was a picture of herself when she was little her dad and a little girl who looked like kaya???? Gauri recalled the picture she had seen at kaya's house the one with shiv and kaya…it was kaya
"Yey tasfveer mene pehli baar dekhi hai aur woh bhi..kaya ke saath meri aur baba ki tasfvir, mein toe kaya ko sirf kuch hein dino se janti hoon toe…"
Gauri was bewildered, nothing made sense, she never remembered meeting kaya when she was younger and this picture..as far as she was aware it didn't existent. Before gauri could be dragged into more confusion Alok walked in with a glass of what looked like a soft drink.
Alok: Yey lo beta, tumare leyiey..vaise tumne pooja toe ki ho gi naa aaj.
Gauri took the glass without responding to alok and alok noticed the bewilderment on gauri's face.
Alok: Kya baat hai beta
Gauri: "Baba yey tasfvir?", gauri picked up the photograph so alok would know what she was talking about. Seeing the photograph in gauris hand, shock was visble on aloks face and gauri noticed it.
Alok: Tume yey tasvir kaha se mili???
Gauri: Yahi se, magar aap itne pareshaan… before gauri could say anything else alok had taken the photograph off her.
Kuch nahi, sirf ek purani tasvif hai. Alok was making his way out of the room when gauri stopped him.
Baba is tasfivr mein kaya?????
Yey kaya hein hai naa?
Meanwhile at kaya at her home is having freshened up and feeling better having talked about her feelings to gauri.. making her way into the lounge she notices lying on the table a purse..
Kaya: "Lagta hai Gauri apna purse yaha bhool gayi" kaya walks over to the phone and begins to dail."
At kapoor mansion rammu kaka picks up the call.
Gauri: "Kaka gauri hai"
Kaka: "Nahi woh toe apne baba ke paas kuch din rehne ke leyey gayi hai ."
Kaya: "Aw ok.. aap muje ghar ka adderess bata sakte hai mein ghud chodaoongi."
................................
Gauri: Batayey muje baba yey kaya hai naa..
"Aap kuch bata kyun nahi rahe hai baba," gauri gets up from where she is sitting on the bed and walks to alok who is standing silent.
"Kuch na kuch toe hai jo aap chupa rahe ho, joe aapko taklif de raha hai magar kehna nahi chahte."
Gauri: Yay aap apni beti ko intna paayar nahi karti ke aap use apni taklif batayey
Alok: "Pyaar karta hoon is leiyey toe batana nahi chahta." Alok turns to face with a distort expresstion, tears were becoming visble in his eyes.
Gauri: Kya baat hai baba kuch na kuch toe hai, joe aap chupana chahte hai, badepapa bhi..
Bataye baba.. kya hai, mene aap ko peheli baar itna udaas dekha hai.
There was a stunned silence in the room and few minutes later alok tuned to gauri taking out the photograph out of his pocket.
Alok: "tum sahi soch rahi ho..is tasfvir mein kaya hai, meri choti beti tumari choti behen"
Gauri: Choti behen..????
Precap: Alok reveals the secret behind kaya being his daughter.
