It's a fact that any newcomer in the television industry today would give anything to work with Ekta Kapoor. Only at the start though. For, once they are established, they often fly out to greener pastures with great alacrity at the first given opportunity.
Actress Poonam Joshi, better known as Mehek of Kahiin To Hoga fame, is no different. Apparently Poonam recently walked out of KTH abruptly and began shooting for Zee TV's Tumhari Disha. The actress who is under contract with Balaji Telefilms for KTH, as long as the serial continues. But she has decided not to honour it.
Ekta Kapoor is furious. When we contacted her, she confirmed the story. "My creative team informed me about Ponam's behaviour," said Ekta. "For an actor, not showing up for the shoot is extremely unprofessional. I was aware of Poonam's intentions about quitting the show. She is under contract, so legally speaking she can't quit it just like that. But I guess that actors do feel saturated after a point and want to move on."
The story goes that Poonam did not inform Ekta or the creative head of the show before storming out. What's more, she has walked out at an extremely crucial point. Her character, Mehek, plays a vital role in KTH, as one of her sisters who will soon get married. However, last week Poonam simply failed to report to the sets, and went to shoot for Tumhari Disha instead. The shooting naturally came to a standstill as they couldn't cheat shoot Poonam's portions.
Balaji insiders say that hell broke lose when Joshi informed Kapoor about quitting the show through an SMS. "I feel like taking serious action against actors who mess around with their and my work schedule in this manner," said Ekta. "But I don't know yet if I am going to sue her."
Earlier too, actress Barkha Bisht had been taken to court by Ekta for breach of contract. "I do not want to make things difficult for the production houses these girls go to work for, when they leave me," explained Ekta.
Sources say that Poonam had been asked to at least serve a one month notice period before walking out of KTH. But she didn't.
We spoke to Poonam to get her side of the story. "I've been working in KTH right from day one," said Poonam angrily. "But I've never had a great track in the show. It was always a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of a role. Naturally, when Tumhari Disha came my way, I jumped at the opportunity. Unlike in KTH, I have a fabulous role in Tumhari Disha. For how long did Balaji expect me to stick around on the show without any track?"
The actress said that she had informed Balaji about her intention to quit, long ago. "I don't see why they are making a hue and cry about this," she added. "Obviously, someone is poisoning Ekta's mind. I think it's completely unfair to call me unprofessional!"
