Chapter 5
When Maithlli opened her eyes later, she was horrified to see Adi standing in the doorway. Maithlli just sat there looking at him shocked. When she came out of her momentarily disoriented state she quickly grabbed the bed cover and covered herself with it, not looking at him.
Adi just stood in the doorway smirking at her. "Miss Nanda, Miss Nanda, you would stop at nothing to get your way would you? So you finally showed your true colours didn't you? I'm glad you did, because I was starting to think that I had you all wrong."
Maithlli looked down at her fingers. She would not embarrass herself further by crying in front of him. Maithlli was so filled with shame that she couldn't meet his eyes. She knew how it looked and he was not about to give her the benefit of the doubt.
"I-I didn't mean to fall asleep," Maithlli whispered, "I felt tired and I-I was just lying down."
"A good story. So what was this all about Miss Nanda. Was it meant to make me let you go or have you just diverted your attention from Kunal to me?"
"I was hot!" The tears of shame suddenly escaped pouring down Maithlli'd face. "You had locked me up in this damn stifling house and left me to suffocate! I-I couldn't take it!"
Adi just stared at her for the moment, the mockery dying from his face. Maithlli couldn't stop crying. He muttered something under his breath, taking a step towards her and then stopping.
"I forgot to turn on the air-conditioning. Damn it! It never entered my mind."
He turned and strode out of the room and a few minutes later she heard the sound of the air-conditioning unit flare into action, but this made no difference her. She just sat there and cried. It had all been too much for her. The way he had captured her and isolated her. And now the final humiliation. She was wrapped in the covers, her head resting on her knees. She wanted to go home so much that she was ready to scream and scream.
"I'm sorry Maithlli. I've been very cruel to you." He sat beside her on the bed and she just cringed away. "I'm not going to hurt you, I'll never hurt you."
"You've locked me up and now you've tried to smother me!" Maithlli screamed.
"I didn't realize how hot it would be in here. In any case I was too busy arguing with you to remember the air-conditioning."
Adi suddenly cupped her face in his hands and looked into her eyes.
"Aren't you going to forgive me Maithlli?" Adi asked as he wiped her tears with warm fingers.
"You can't seem to understand that I'm a prisoner here can you? No amount of kindness can wipe that out. Why can't you understand that I don't want to marry Kunal and he's lying about us." Maithlli said fiercely.
"Do we have to bring Kunal up," Adi said standing up, "I know that if I relax my attention for even a minute, you will escape and go to him."
"
I won't!"
"I hope you're saying the truth because if you're not we'll have to go to the island and settle things an entirely different way. Like this."
Adi cupped Maithlli's face again and met her lips with his own. The world started spinning around Maithlli as Vikram Aditya Mehra kissed her. Maithlli wanted to push him away and scream at him. This was Vikram Aditya Mehra after all and she hated him. But she couldn't break away. She hardly remembered her own name as Adi deepened the kiss.
Adi was not in the best state himself. He never thought kissing Maithlli would be like this. She was so warm, so sweet, and so delicate in his arms. He knew that he had to pull away before he lost all control.
Adi forced their lips aparts and all Maithlli could do was look at him mesmerized. When Adi spoke, her trance broke and anger resurfaced.
"Kunal wouldn't want to marry you if you were already my girlfriend." Adi said calmly, trying hard to hide the affect she had had on him.
"I'll-I'll kill you." Maithlli whispered angrily, trembling and breathing hard from the earth-shattering kiss she had just faced.
"I'm sure you would want to get dressed first Miss Nanda, I'll be waiting downstairs." Adi left the room closing the door.
As soon as Adi left the room, Maithlli fell on the bed closing her eyes. She was horrified to discover that she was getting used to him. She was getting accustomed to his tall frame, his black hair and amber eyes. Even his odd humour. Heavens! She even found him protective. Maithlli remembered what he had said about getting attached to your captors. It was not going to happen to her. Never!

Foolishly she looked down the rocks. The sea was boiling up on to them, waiting to devour her. She was trapped with no hope of moving because any movement might send her hurtling down. Adi was out and this time he could not come to save her. The servants thought she was in her room and would not intrude.
Nobody in the whole world knew where she was, only Adi and his servants knew she was even alive. She hung on to the grass, not daring to move either her feet or her hands. This time she had taken on more than she could cope with.
