Chapter 4
Next morning Maithlli managed to wake up early. She was just about to get out of bed to but her horror Adi came in her room,.
"Haven't you ever heard of a thing called knocking? What do you want?" She slid under the covers and looked at him over the top.
a:"Rest assured my intentions are completely honorable, Miss Nanda"
"Kidnapping is not honorable, and it's only 6:30!" Maithlli retorted.
A:"I'm aware of that. I wish to talk to you sensibly. I have to go into the City this morning. I had hoped to avoid it, but I can't."
"Don't mind me." Maithlli tried to hide her glee. Her words however did not set his mind to rest.
A:"I do mind you Miss Nanda. I'm aware that if left alone you will get into your own mischief and possibly in danger. Will you give me your word that if I take you to the City with me you will not try to escape?"
"No!" Maithlli had no desire to go into the City with him. He would constantly be on guard and she had no idea where he would be going. If she stayed at the house she could escape at leisure.
"Very well." Adi walked to the dressing table and took her handbag.
M:"What are you doing? How dare you touch my things?"
A:"My trip to the City is urgent and I can't just leave you here. You'd simply run away. Therefore you're coming with me, minus your passport, money and ticket. I expect to see you downstairs in one hour. I have a meeting this morning and it is a long drive to the City." Adi then walked out the door closing it behind him.
Maithlli was fuming. It was beyond belief! What did he intend to do with her, tie her to the chair while he attended the meeting? But then again, the City was full of people, many who would speak English. And she would be close to the airport. Things weren't that bad after all. He had played right into her hands. By the time breakfast came she was resting on her pillow and smiling happily.

An hour later Maithlli was ready to sit in his Mercedes as Adi held the door for her.
A:"Please remember Miss Nanda you are in high heels, it would be unwise to leap from the car as soon as the gates open."
"I know I'm trapped for now," Maithlli assured him, "I've given in for the moment."
"I doubt it," he muttered as he started the car and drove off.
They left the house behind and sped down the drive.
"So will I be attending the meeting with you?" Maithlli asked calmly.
"You are not. You Miss Nanda are big trouble." Adi snapped.
"I intend to be." Maithlli shot back. "So if I'm not going with you, what am I doing? Does that leave me wondering around looking at the sights." Maithlli asked pleasantly.
A:"I does not. I intend to lock you up. I have a place."
"That's it I'm getting out!" Maithlli said astonished.
"At this speed, you astonish me Miss Nanda. I'd like to see it." Adi said amused.
"I just want to go home." Maithlli said controlling her tears.
A:"And I've promised you, you will as soon as Kunal's engagement is over."
He never once doubted his brother. Do I look like a seductress?
"Do I look like a seductress?!" Maithlli blurted out angrily.
"No." Adi replied grimly, and that was all that was said throughout the journey.
********
The house was in one of the best suburbs. The house stone-built and elegant. The whole street was deserted. The shutters to every window, each one tightly closed, giving it an alarming look that further depressed her. Maithlli knew this is where he intended to leave her, locked up.
Surprisingly it was neither dark nor gloomy inside the house. It was a beautiful house. There were pretty touches, from paintings to plants. It was light because the shutters were also louvered but very solid-looking nevertheless. Maithlli eyed them bitterly.
"How do you know I won't open the shutters and go?"Maithlli muttered.
A:"They are locked securely. The shutters throughout the house are locked to save yourself the trouble of exploration."
He went up the stairs and she trailed along. They entered a bedroom, were the shutters were also locked.
"Can't you at least open the shutters in here? It's not like I'm going to jump into the street and kill myself." Maithlli said irritably.
A:"You would probably try, I don't trust your judgement," he snapped, "and anyway you would most certainly try to attract passers-by."
"Whatever," Maithlli muttered under her breath knowing he had read her like a book, "So who lives here?" Maithlli asked.
"I own the house, but a woman lives here."
"A girlfriend perhaps, Mr Mehra.
You obviously have set rules for yourself and quite different rules for other people. You kidnap me and lock me up because you THINK I'm involved with Kunal, but it's quite alright for you to keep a woman in here!"
"You would have not been locked up if you would have stayed in your own country! And I'm not about to become engaged and the woman in question is not after my money. She has plenty of her own!" Adi looked at her ferociously.
"Don't be too complacent, she's probably trying to get more!" Maithlli bit out sarcastically.
Suddenly Adi stopped talking and looked at her with a slight smile on his face. "Are you suggesting a woman would only be after me for my money?" Adi said slowly walking towards her and locking her to a wall.
"Iβ¦I'm n..not concerned with your affairs." Maithlli said nervously. Maithlli pushed him away hastily as she realized they were quite alone.
Adi held her arm and pulled her back towards him, whispering in her ear. "It was probably a good idea to put some distance between us, otherwise I might have had to prove that there's more to me than just moneyβ¦Miss Nanda."
Maithlli found herself staring into his eyes again, the hypnotized feeling coming back. She made a great effort and spun around, walking off down the stairs, her cheeks burning. He came down behind her.
"I have to leave for my meeting. I'll be back this afternoon." Adi walked out, locking the door securely behind him, and Maithlli went into instant furious action.
If she could open the front door it would be easiest line of escape. She searched the drawers in the kitchen and came up with a long thin knife. In spite of many attempts Maithlli couldn't open the lock. Maybe the locks on the shutters would be easier to handle?
They were not. She tried every one and there was not so much as a creak. The house was tight as a drum and she was right where she had been before.
All the activity had made Maithlli hot and she longed to throw the windows open and let in some air. She peered through the cracks in the shutters and saw that the street outside looked hotter now than it had been when they arrived.
She felt stifled and claustrophobic. He didn't care if she collapsed in here. She went from room to room but it was the same. Maithlli felt so sleepy, tired and agitated that if she continued room to room she would be lying unconscious on the floor.
Maithlli slogged up the stairs and went into one of the bedrooms. She was starting to feel light-headed now. She decided to take a cold shower and then lye down on the bed wrapped up in a towel. She would lie on the bed until she would've heard Adi come in and then she would quickly get dressed. It was the obvious solution.
But instead of waiting for Adi to come. Maithlli fell asleep as she very exhausted. It was something she should have expected but it never occurred to her. She had been making escape attempts since she had arrived in Greece and she was waking up early for the past two mornings.

Adi just stood in the doorway smirking at her. "Miss Nanda, Miss Nanda, you would stop at nothing to get your way would you? So you finally showed your true colours didn't you? I'm glad you did, because I was starting to think that I had you all wrong."
