Chapter 2
'You can't just keep me here!' Maithlli yelled desperately.
'We'll see about that Miss Nanda.' Adi replied with a smug look on his face.
When the car stopped in front of the house Maithlli jumped out and ran without her bag too. Her return ticket, her passport and the little money she had were all in her bag. She stopped, disheartened to see that she had not run very far. She could see Vikram Aditya Mehra, and he was ignoring her. He was lifting her suitcases from the car and putting them on the steps that led to the house.
The front door opened a man came out. He looked old and not threatening at all. This could be some sort of conspiracy. Kunal didn't know where she was and here she was faced with dealing with one power-mad lunatic.
Maithlli ran back with the same speed and Adi didn't even turn his head. This infuriated Maithlli even more. He was so arrogantly sure of his captive. He merely gave an amused look when Maithlli started speaking to the man at the door.
'Help me! This man has kidnapped me!' Maithlli yelled breathlessly.
The man just looked at her blankly and then went inside ignoring her. Adi leaned towards her and whispered in her ear, 'He's my butler, he doesn't speak a word of English.' Vikram Adiya Mehra's deep voice showed his amusement and he looked down at her with a sardonic smile. While Maithlli just glared back at him.
'Don't think you can get away with this Mr Vikram Aditya Mehra!' she raged. 'You can't keep me here. As soon as daylight breaks I'll be out of here!'
'At least you have the sense to realize that escape attempts are useless at night' he murmured.
'I came back because I forgot my purse! Believe me Mr Mehra as soon as daylight breaks I'll be off and don't think your stupid gates can stop me. I can climb like a wild cat!'
'Surely you mean like a monkey? Let's go in Miss Nanda. If you are going to begin your race to the city tomorrow you'll need all the sleep you can get.' Adi handed Maithlli her bag politely to her and she snatched it from his hands and went inside, with Adi following closely behind.
'Sofia the maid will take you to your room. You can unpack and then come down for dinner.'
'I'm not going anywhere until you me why you're keeping me here! What have I ever done to you?!' Tears of frustration brimmed Maithlli's eyes.
'You're safe. Nothing unpleasant is about to happen to you?' Adi replied calmly.
'It already did.' Maithlli reminded him shakily.
'I admit you're a captive, but putting that aside, you will be well looked after. You will be fed and cared for. The house is isolated but very luxurious.'
'You can't just dismiss kidnapping in that way! You won't get away with this!' Maithilli shouted
'I will get away with it for the time that is necessary. Kunal will soon be engaged.'
'What does that have to do with anything!' Maithlli spat out.
'It has to do with everything Miss Nanda. Your relationship with my brother has to do with everything!'
Maithlli could sense Adi's anger rising but she refused to back down.
M: 'What are you talking about!'
A: 'I will only say this once Miss Nanda. I will not let you share a romantic relationship with Kunal. He is getting engaged and was quite eager to, until he met you! I probably never would have believed a girl who acts and looks as sweet and innocent as you would go after a man for money. But then again appearances can be decieving!'
Maithlli felt his words pierce through her chest. She had never felt so humiliated in her entire life.
'You can't think that Kunal and I are'we're just friends! We met in London and we studied together. We're not even that close.'
Adi looked at Maithlli disbelievingly. 'You were very quick in accepting an invitation to Greece from a friend you hardly know Miss Nanda.'
'It-it was convenient'I needed to get away.' Maithlli replied hesitantly.
'I see.' Maithlli could see that Adi didn't believe her.
'I've told you! He's a friend. A friend I don't even know very well.'
For a moment Adi sat contemplating her silently and she hoped that maybe he was starting to believe her.
'An interesting story,' he stated. 'Now I'll tell you what I know. Kunal has already confessed that you met in college but weren't just friends. He said that you two had fallen in love with each other by the time he left.'
'I don't believe you. Kunal would never say anything like that.' Maithlli looked at Adi ferociously.
'He was quite clear Miss Nanda!' Adi bit out angrily.
'Then he's lying!'
'You knew he was wealthy. According to Kunal he invited you here because he couldn't live without you.'
'He's lying!' Maithlli yelled again but to no avail.
'Well clearly one of you is lying, and I don't see what Kunal has to gain while you Miss Nanda have a lot to gain. Actually a fortune.'
Maithlli just looked at him with eyes full of fury but this seemed to have no affect on Adi.
'I can't see why I'm wasting my time with you. I'm leaving tomorrow, and don't say I haven't warned you about this. Criminals get caught, even the wealthy ones Mr Mehra!'
Maithlli then got up and stormed out of the room. 'Sweet dreams Miss Nanda,' Adi yelled after her. Which only earned him an angry grunt.
M:'Let him have all the fun he wants because he won't be so amused when tomorrow he'll be behing bars.'
