Hello everyone, first of all I'd like to apologize to each and everyone of
you who have read my fan fic and were waiting for an update. I was
involved in a road accident in Germany in July 2007 and since then, I've
been in and out of hospital. I've suffered multiple fractures and thankfully
owing to good treatment and God's grace, I'm feeling much much better
right now and can use all my limbs. I'm home finally and am undergoing
therapy now but am able to use my hands very well.

I'm so very sorry for leaving all of you stranded and in fact the first thing
that I did when I was back home finally mid December sans the cast and
plaster was to get online and check on india-forums. However, I waited
till now to make my first post as along with my apology, I also wished to
post a couple of chapters to the fan fic. I will definitely complete this fan
fic and I sincerely apologise to everyone who has been kind enough to
read my fan fic. There is nothing more irritating than an incomplete fan
fic and I understand your ire and really beg your pardon and hope you will
understand me.

I have of course been watching the Adi-Maithili-Garima track and it has
been difficult sometimes to get any inspiration for a romantic track but I
have tried my best and hope you will not be too disappointed. Look
forward to hearing your comments and once again, I apologise for this
long delay.

Recap: Adi rescues Maithili from some hooligans and realises that he
wants to explore the strong feelings that he has for Maithili. Maithili is
coming to terms with the fact that Pranay really does not have any
feelings for her but she is confused by the feelings that she starts feeling
for Adi.....

Chapter Seven:

Adi walked into his house, a slight smile still on his lips, the softest
butterfly touch still lingering on his cheek…….. his smile deepened,
'You know Vikam Aditya Mehra, you are really sweet' it amazed him
how much he liked hearing her say his whole name, it just sounded so
right….. the Lord knew that he hated having such a long name, but
somehow when Maithili said it, it sounded perfect, totally perfect!

"Adi, my dearest child, come to me darling," the dulcet tones of his
grandmother broke into his thoughts. As she moved to hug him, she
suddenly held him at arms length, "Adi, where have you been, you
naughty boy! You look like you've waded through a gutter!"

As he opened his mouth to speak, she continued, "Never mind, Never
mind, just go shower quickly, then come down to the Family room for a
total surprise."

"Go on," she urged him as he opened his mouth again to question her,
"Go on, rush, it's a big surprise, hurry up."

"But Daadi.…," he protested, wanting to find out what was happening, but
she had already started walking away.

Next morning:

Maithili hurried towards the canteen during lunch time to get a sandwich.
She looked frantically at her watch, 1:20....and grimaced. Shucks, if I
don't finish the report that Ma'am wants by 2:30, I'm gonna get it from
her for sure! Hurry Maithili, don't dawdle.

Throughout the morning, she had found it difficult to concentrate. She
had looked for Adi as she had walked into the college but had only
countered what she had thought was a knowing look from that idiot
Dhruv Raichand.I'm sure Adi must have told that big mouth the whole
story
and then she had spent some time wondering why that thought
made her feel so flustered.

Then, just as she had settled down at her desk, Pranay had called asking
her to listen to a new poem he had written. ['Please Maithili, I know you
must be busy right now but I would really like your opinion on this.'] 'Ask
your darling Mallishka' had been on the tip of her tongue as she heard
this but he'd continued, ['Come on Maithili, don't say you can't, you are
my dearest and best friend, whom else can I ask?'] and she had sighed,
wondering whether Mallishka had had a fight with Pranay, feeling a gush
of sympathy for the pathetic undertones that she thought had laced his
request and cursing herself silently for being such a soft touch.

So, she had asked him to email it to her. ['Thanks Maithili, for being there
for me always. I know I can always count on you, my dearest friend. I
have dedicated this poem to you and will publish it as such'] he had told
her earnestly with a smile in his voice. She had read the poem; it had
taken her some time to get through as it was very intense, though
excellently written. It was about people and relationships, focusing on
friendship and she had been touched that he was thinking about
dedicating it to her.

She had at that moment looked at the picture on her desk, taken ages
back, it was of Pragati, Pranay and herself in the gardens at Agarwal
House. Pranay, tall, skinny and loose limbed, an arm around both of them,
Pragati smiling into the camera and she, (she shook her head ruefully)
she, laughing up at Pranay who had been smiling into the camera
obliviously.

She had called him back to let him know that she had really liked the
poem and Pranay had been effusive with his gratitude. He was coming
home over the weekend apparently and wanted to meet her to tell her all
about the launch and stuff. For sure he's had a fight with his darling
Mallishka,
she'd thought and then whiled away some more time
wondering why the heck that didn't make her feel like dancing a jig.

At that moment, Janki Ma'am had walked in, bringing her back abruptly
from her wandering thoughts and enquired whether the Report for that
afternoon's meeting with Mr. Mehra was ready. She had gulped and
murmured that she would hand it in by 2:30.

Janki Ma'am, she had thought, had looked at her sternly, ['No later than
2:30, remember, I'm leaving for the meeting at 3:00 as Mr. Mehra is not
coming here today and if there are any changes that I want made, you
need to factor in time for that as well.']

The mention of Mr. Mehra had reminded her of Adi again and how he had
rushed to her help yesterday. First impressions should never be last
impressions! Honestly! Vikram Aditya Mehra is living proof!
She
smiled, unconsciously slowing down, 'I must look for him at lunch and
thank him again,' she thought.

As she got her sandwich at the counter, she looked around for Adi's
usual table and saw his friends chatting around, finishing their lunch. Adi
was not there today, she realized, startled by the disappointment she felt.

She caught sight of Dhruv who was walking towards the counter and
hailed him. "Wassup Maithili?," he asked her, trying to get a look over her
head at the food left in the fridge. "Is Adi not in today?" she asked him.

"Uhh…actually, he's not coming in today." "Is he alright? He's not unwell
or anything?" she continued and was startled to have him rock back on
his heels and favour her with a raised eyebrow and a considering look.

"What?" she asked him startled by his demeanour and he suddenly
grinned. "Adi's not unwell," he told her, "but you can call him up if you're
that worried."

His grin suddenly resembled a smirk and she felt the colour rising in her
cheeks, suddenly uncomfortable and recalling the knowing look she had
detected in his eyes that morning.

"Thanks," she muttered and turned away feeling like a fool. Stupid
Dhruv! making it sound like…anyway blast him, annoying juvenile
little….shucks, its 1:40, gotta rush back.

After work, she decided to take a de tour on the way home as she wanted
to look for a birthday gift for Pragati whose birthday it was in the coming
week.

Of course, this year would be different, she thought with a small smile,
Pragati would not be spending her birthday with Maithili, she would
probably be having a totally romantic day with Ankit.

How time flew! It seemed just yesterday that Pragati was telling her
solemnly that she just wanted to study, become a lawyer, have her law
firm and that she just did not wish to get married. And, within the
twinkling of an eye, Ankit happened.

Honestly, although Pragati had taken to the marital state like a fish in
water, she couldn't help wishing, sometimes, very selfishly, because she
really missed having her best friend around her all the time, that Pragati
hadn't gotten married so early.

She had been shocked when Pragati had spoken to her about Ankit, she
recalled. Pragati, who had never even looked much at any guy before,
really, it was strange when she got thinking about it.

Of course, to give him some credit, Ankit seemed like a really nice guy, he
was so much in love with Pragati and Pragati, in turn, adored him
completely. Touchwood, she thought, absently. Pragati hasn't had a very
happy life, poor thing. I hope that she finds every happiness with Ankit
and that Ankit always keeps Pragati very very happy.

She entered the shop she was looking for and started looking around for
something suitable. Something pretty that Pragati could keep in her new
house.

There was something so lovely about doing up one's own house. She
sighed, hopefully, someday she could do up her own house, with
someone who loved her as much as she loved him. 'Hmm…mm, what
should I buy her?'

She looked around the shop and did a sudden double take, then smiled
happily. Pragati's mother was standing by the corner of the next row,
looking at some artefacts. "Gunn Aunty," she called out, as she walked
towards her. Pragati's mom turned and smiled. "Maithili, how nice to see
you, how are you, my dear," she asked, patting her cheek affectionately.

"Aunty, you got back this morning didn't you?" asked Maithili, "Pragati
mentioned that you would be coming back from your Mamma's house
today." "Yes, beta, I got back in the morning, how is your Dadaji?" "He's
fine Aunty, thank you, he's at our village, some work relating to some
land," replied Maithili, "I've come to look for a gift for Pragati" Gunn
Aunty smiled, "Me too, my dear."

They looked around for a bit. Maithili placed a little jade figurine on the
shelf she had picked it up from and sighed. Too small, too expensive
and so not worth the price!

She turned to see Gunn Aunty smiling ruefully at her, "My feelings
exactly. I also can't seem to find anything today, I'll think I'll try again
tomorrow, feel slightly tired today." "Aunty," Maithili, asked her, the idea
coming to her on the spur of the moment, "Would you like to have a cup
of coffee with me?" She thought Gunn Aunty hesitated for a moment, but
then she smiled, "Sure, beta, where do you want to go?" "There's a
Starbucks round the corner, should we go there?" Maithili asked her. She
nodded smiling.

Since Starbucks had opened outlets in Mumbai only recently, it was at
that moment, very very popular. Maithili grinned in relief as she found a
table for two in a corner and she asked Gunn Aunty to sit down.

"I'll get the coffee Aunty," she told her firmly when Gunn Aunty began to
protest, "just tell me what you will have." "Come on Aunty, you call me
'beta' don't you? Then, no arguments."

Maithili went to get the coffee. There was quite a queue and it was some
time before Maithili made her way back slowly with the tray in her hands.

As she neared their table, she saw, to her surprise, that Gunn Aunty was
no longer alone. A guy was seated opposite her, speaking to her. Now
who's this?
As the guy's back was facing her, she could not see his
face.

Gunn Aunty was looking very surprised, Maithili noticed, but she was
listening intently to what the guy was telling her. Maithili approached the
table and stood there uncertainly. Gunn Aunty looked at her and then at
the guy sitting opposite her.

He immediately stood, "Oh! sorry, is this your chair," he started to push
the chair towards her. "No, its alright," Maithili told him, I'll just borrow
that one, I don't think anyone is joining them, she said, tilting her head
towards the next table.

She asked the girl seated at the other table and borrowed the chair. The
guy remained standing until she was seated and then he sat down. So
gentlemanly!

"Will you have some coffee?" Maithili smiled at the guy and offered "You
can have this one if you like, it's a latte, I'll get another one." "No, please
don't bother, I was just having coffee with my son and nephew," he
pointed towards the other end of the room.

"By the way, I'm Nikhil," he shook her hand, "Nikhil Mehra." "Pleasure,"
she murmured, "I'm Maithili Rai." Nikhil smiled at her ('Likewise') Maithili
looked at him curiously, Nikhil Mehra! 'Nice clean cut features, dark
brown wavy hair, charming smile, charming manners' she thought. Good
Looking and a Mehra! Interesting! 'Who can he be?' she wondered, 'any
relation to Adi, could it be?'

'A friend obviously as Gunn Aunty looks comfortable.' 'Strange! I never
thought Gunn Aunty had any friends, she's always so quiet and reserved,
I've never even seen her with anyone apart from the family.'

He was saying something to Gunn Aunty softly and Maithili looked away,
not wanting to appear too curious. Hearing the scraping back of the
chair, she turned to see him standing up. "I must go now," he said
pleasantly, "I've met my nephew after so many years, he's taking me
around, he'll be getting impatient. Gunn, we must speak again, I'll call
you later. Maithili, it was nice to meet you."

After a while, Maithili asked, "Gunn Aunty, this Nikhil Mehra, is he related
to the Mehra family?" Gunn Aunty nodded, "He is Suyash Mehra's second
son, Shikhar Mehra's younger brother." 'So, Adi was the impatient
nephew!'
She turned to see if she could see Adi.

"What happened Maithili? Whom are you looking for?" Gunn Aunty asked
her. Maithili glanced back self-consciously, "Nothing Gunn Aunty, do you
like your coffee, she asked hurriedly, conscious of the colour rising in her
face. Damn why do I blush so easily!

They finished their coffee and walked outside the outlet, Maithili tried to
see if she could see Nikhil Mehra and Adi, just curious! but they
weren't to be seen. Shucks!

As the stood on the kerb, waiting to cross the road, a sleek black
Mercedes came to a halt right next to them. The rear window smoothly
zipped downwards, "Gunn," Nikhil Mehra looked at her, his face looking
disarmingly boyish, "Are you parked here or at the main car park at the
next block? We can drop you off."

Gunn Aunty had stiffened slightly and Maithili smiled at Nikhil Mehra, "Oh
no! we're just planning to take a bus home, no worries. Thanks a lot
though."

"In that case, get in, we'll drop you home," he answered, looking intently
at Gunn Aunty. I like that! I'm speaking to him and he's looking at her!
So much for gentlemanly behaviour!
His voice had a quiet authority to
it though and he sounded very serious.

Maithili looked sideways at Gunn Aunty, who looked like she wanted to
protest. Yeah! That's the spirit! Nikhil Mehra pushed the door open.
And Gunn Aunty quietly got in, How disappointing! Should have stood
up to him!
telling Maithili to get in also.

"But I'll go on my own Gunn Aunty", she protested. She could see Adi
grinning at her from the driver's seat. "Oh! Get in already Maithili, I don't
want a traffic ticket, come on, I'm parked at the kerb, get in," Adi told her
arrogantly, a slow smirk on his face. Like that would bother you, Mr.
Lawless!

"Go on, get in, what are you waiting for? Christmas!" She sniffed at him
and got in ungraciously, uncertain whether she was happy to finally see
him after looking for him so much! or whether she was miffed at his
usual high handedness. Hmph..! Seems like a family trait!

"Gunn, Maithili, meet my son Shravan, Nikhil Mehra gestured towards the
front of the car, and my nephew Vikram Aditya. Boys, this is an old friend
Gunn Agarwal and this is….." "Maithili, I've met several times, Nikhil
Chachu," interrupted Adi cheekily.

"Yes, of course," said Nikhil, a smile on his lips. Maithili tried to look at
Shravan but as she was seated directly behind him, that was quite
impossible. His "hey" had sounded sullen and bored Another spoilt
brat!
and she was keen to see how much he resembled his cousin.
Hah!

'What a really nice car,' she thought, 'how many sleek cars did these guys
own anyway.' She shrugged. 'They probably bought cars like she bought
bread,' she thought amused. "

"What's so funny," Adi asked her breezily and she looked up at him
sharply, he was looking at her through the rear view mirror, she realized,

"Nothing," she told him, meeting his eyes in the mirror, feeling a strange
thrill of pleasure course up her spine as she took in the intent look in his
eye as he looked at her.

He raised an eyebrow slowly. She smiled inspite of herself. "Nice car! Not
your usual style though," she told him loftily.

Adi grinned, "This is my Dad's car," he told her, the cheeky grin plastered
onto his face, "I still prefer the sporty models," he continued, his eyes
brimming with laughter, "deadly curves, you know."

"I'm sure", Maithili retorted primly, rolling her eyes at him.

"Hadn't you better concentrate on the road," she continued coolly, as he
opened his mouth to say something.

He laughed and continued looking at her, his eyes lighting up
mischievously, daring her to say something further.

Her lips tightened and she was about to tell him off when his cousin said
something to him and he looked away from her, eyes back on the road.
Yeah! Before you do something crazy like drive us into a ditch…or
worse!

She sniffed trying not to think about how cute she thought he was
looking, especially with that mischievous look in his eyes.

"Gunn, how come you didn't drive today," she heard Nikhil Mehra ask
suddenly, and before she could think, she found herself answering on
behalf of Gunn Aunty, "Oh! Gunn Aunty does not drive and Trishna Dadi
doesn't… she trailed off uncertainly, looking at Gunn Aunty's face silently
signalling that she not say anymore.

She saw Nikhil Mehra look contemplatively at Gunn Aunty, who looked
down quietly into her lap. Maithili looked through the corner of her eyes
at Nikhil Mehra, Gunn Aunty's profile and then at Adi who was also
looking at her curiously, his eyebrows raised, a question in his eyes. She
shook her head slightly and then shrugged.

"Nikhil, just drop us off here," Gunn Aunty spoke softly, they had reached
the outer road near Agarwal House, it was just a five minute walk from
there. Nikhil bit out something softly, nothing complimentary, I'm
certain!

"Some things have still not changed huh Gunn?" his voice sounded faintly
bitter and Maithili was by now completely intrigued, 'what in the world
was going on here?'

"Nikhil, please," Gunn Aunty sounded very weary, "There is so much that
you don't know, you've just come back, Its been more than eighteen
years Nikhil"

"So tell me what happened Gunn," he retaliated promptly, "go on, tell
me." "Nikhil," Gunn Aunty now sounded piqued and looked pointedly at
Adi, Shravan and Maithili, "Just let it be, no point speaking of the past
anyway. And thanks for the lift"

"I'll call you later Gunn," he told her unsmilingly as Maithili got off and
held the door for Gunn Aunty. Maithili leaned forward and murmured her
thanks, looking at Adi who had just received a call on his hand phone.

She thanked Nikhil ('pleasure' he muttered). She watched them drive off,
trying to catch a glimpse of Shravan but the glass was too dark and her
attention was caught by Adi waving at her at the intersection, his glass
rolled down, before speeding away.

Maithili looked at Gunn Aunty curiously. She was really looking very tired
suddenly. "Aunty, are you feeling okay," she asked her.

"Yes, Maithili, I'm just a little tired, nothing really, anyway, why don't you
come and have dinner with us"

"Thanks Aunty," Maithili told her, "but I've got loads of stuff to get
through at home, so I'll just head home now." "I enjoyed spending time
today with you Gunn Aunty. It was really nice," she continued, and Gunn
Aunty smiled and hugged her suddenly, "You are so sweet Maithili, its
always nice having you around. You take care and keep coming to see me
okay. Now that Pragati is married and away, I don't want you to keep
away. Go home safely and give my regards to your Dadaji when you
speak to him. Maithili nodded and started walking away.

A/N: The next two chapters are also finished and I'll be posting them very
shortly. Thanks.

Here's Chapter 8. I hope you like it. Thanks for all the encouragement and
good wishes.

Chapter 8

Her house was at least a fifteen minute walk from there but the weather
was so pleasant, she decided to avoid taking a bus and just walk.

The sun had just set and the sky was a lovely mixture of shades, russet,
shades of blue and interspersed orange. Truly an artist's delight!

She had tried to re-create these shades so many times but she could
never achieve anything even remotely similar. But after all, she
acknowledged wryly, she was not so good at painting, although she did
try very hard.

She liked to do so many things but unfortunately she was not really
brilliant at anything, unlike Pragati who shone at her studies, Pranay who
wrote so well, Tannu who painted so well while she, Maithili, who had
tried so hard to discover some hidden talent in herself had still to find it.

Still there ougt to be an award for trying! 'Jill of all trades, mistress
of none' that's me, thought Maithili, smiling to herself.

"Hey, you idiot," she was suddenly jerked out of her reverie as she was
pulled back by the shoulder sharply, Ouch! That hurt!

"Why the hell don't you look where you're going you little nitwit?" She
blinked as she realized she had stepped off the kerb as she walked
absorbed in her thoughts and turned to thank her rescuer in the same
moment that she recognized his voice.

Adi was glaring at her, "Are you blind? Can't you watch where you're
walking? That car nearly ran you down and….."

She had been about to apologise but his sharp tone got to her, "Excuse
me, what's your problem? Did I ask you to pull me back?" she
interrupted him snappily.

"Oh Madam! so this is the thanks I get for pulling you to safety," he asked
her sarcastically, "thank you very much."

He looked upset, she realised with a frown and her irritation ebbed away.
"Thanks Adi, I'm sorry I snapped at you. By the way, what are you doing
here, where's your car and why are you standing here like this?" she
asked him quickly, hoping he had not registered her apology, knowing
that he would again get high handed if he did.

"And where's your uncle and cousin?" she added, just in case. "Oh!
Chachu's just stepped into that store there, he wanted to get something,"
he gestured towards a multimedia shop across the street.

"Shravvie's gone off to meet some friends. And my car is parked there,"
he pointed straight ahead at a small parking lot, "and my mother is at
home, my Daadu is at work, my Dad is in Singapore today, my Daadi is
probably out with her friends and Tris, Percy and Pluto are probably
having a blast in the garden prior to devouring their evening meal," he
continued snarkily, his lips curving into a wicked grin, which really
made him look hot! Maithili, you have so lost it!

"So, have I satisfied your curiosity Ms. Rai." "Not really," she answered him
pertly, "What about the servants, I'm sure your house is full of them, go
ahead and tell me all their whereabouts.

But no," she said, suddenly breaking into a laugh, "I'm sure you don't
even know how many servants you have, forget about their names. Try
though, I'm sure there must be at least one Ramu Kaka and one Dinoo
Kaka" Her lips curved into a merry smile as he laughed.

"And Adi," she continued, "you know, its so strange to see you out on the
road sans your car. She laughed, her eyes shining with mirth, and told
him, "Just Imagine, Vikram Aditya Mehra walking on the roads! Major
News Item! Stop the Presses," she raised her voice theatrically as she said
the last bit.

"Yes, well, Maithili Rai, it is true what you say there…………I am very
newsworthy…in fact hot news," he told her smirking slightly, "shall I pose
now for my picture?"

He laughed at her expression, "Hello," he reached out and tweaked her
ponytail, "you're the one who started this, don't give me that look." "Adi,
you are so full of yourself, honestly," she told him mock seriously, unable
to keep a grin off her face. They stood there smiling at each other for a
moment.

"So, big game tomorrow night, huh? he goaded her, referring to the
Premiership match between Chelsea and ManU the next night, prepare to
be creamed."

She looked at him with pity, "Start praying for your red devils Adi, They
need all the support they can get. You do know the game is at Stamford
Bridge, right," she asked him, reminding him of the amazing home record
that Chelsea enjoyed.

Also, do give a thought to the same fixture last season." Adi laughed, "Oh
ho! Statistics! Not going to do you any good to remember those." After a
moment, he regarded her thoughtfully, "Say, Maithili, what are you doing
tomorrow night?"

She looked at him suspiciously, was this a trick question. "Obviously, I'm
going to watch the game stupid," she told him.

He rolled his eyes at her, "Ya Ya, I know that, but would you like to join
us, some of us are going to watch it at the Big Screen at Middle Square
tomorrow, Come there with your Chelsea shirt, I'm guessing they'll at
least need one fan."

She was already shaking her head when he taunted her "So scared we are
going to wipe you out, is it?" She glared at him, "Okay, you're on. And
what's more, I'd like to see you eat your words when you loose
tomorrow."

"Okay, let's make this more interesting," Adi told her, his face alight with
laughter, 'He has a cleft in his chin when he smiles, she noted
absently,
"Chelsea loses, you take me out for dinner otherwise I'll take
you out, howzat?" "Dinner?", she asked him doubtfully, "Dinner where
Adi?" You know I don't have bountiful resources at my disposal like you,
right?" she demanded.

Adi smiled, she was so cute! "If you lose, you can decide where to
take me, If I lose, I'll decide where to take you. It can be KFC for all I
care, it's the principle which matters here, If ManU wins, you can treat me
to a burger and it will be as tasty as a gourmet meal, I assure you. So,
keep your money ready."

She sniffed, "Okay, I'm game" And she really was, she was fun to be
with. Nikhil Chachu, take as much time as you want getting back.

"So, I'll pick you up tomorrow" he informed her. "No, don't bother, I'll see
you at Middle Square directly." "Must you argue about everything girl?",
he asked her exasperated. "I'm picking you up," he told her firmly as she
opened her mouth to argue, no doubt. "No arguments", he told her.

She hesitated for a moment and then just gave in, not very graciously.
"Don't sulk, he told her, it doesn't suit you." Liar! She stuck her
tongue out at him before breaking into a rueful smile. Totally adorable!

"By the way, howz Lover Boy?" She looked up at him sharply and finding
no smirk on his face (he was looking unusually serious) and told him of
her conversation with Pranay. Why are you telling him all this
Maithili!

He nodded, "So, if anyone needs to get into your good books, all they
need to do is write a poem and dedicate it to you, is it" Maithili nodded at
him smiling.

"Okay, here's my poem, dedicated to you Maithili. Roses are Red, Never
Blue, And Chelsea fans Dread, The attack of ManU, howzzat!"

She laughed, "Ha Ha, what talent you have hidden from us Vikram Aditya
Mehra. I shall tell Janki Ma'am to put you up for the next Poetry & Prose
competition."

He pulled at her pony tail sharply, "No way, do you hear me!" "Yeah!" She
retorted with spirit, "and no way does Chelsea dread any attack from
ManU, you silly boy."

"Hey, I'm Adi, not silly boy Pranay."

She stuck her tongue out at him childishly in response. "So juvenile," she
told him.

"Says who?"

"Me"

"Seems like a case of the pot calling the kettle black"

"Yeah right!"

They smiled at each other again.

"So, it's the first time I'm seeing your Nikhil Chachu. He doesn't live at
Mehra House?" she asked him after a small lull in the conversation, as
they walked towards his car.

"No, Nikhil Chachu lives in New York. He's come down for a visit. Daadu
and Nikhil Chachu don't get along very well but I know that Daadu always
misses him. And Aashu Chachu as well."

"Aashu Chachu?" she asked him, "you have another Chachu?" "Yes, he
nodded, looking slightly sad, "He's heading the CBI Mumbai Task Force,
Ashutosh Mehra. He's completely estranged from the family."

He looked slightly downcast and she didn't know what to say to him.
She'd gone through most of her life wishing that she had a huge family of
her own. True, her Daadu was everything for her but sometimes when
she saw the Agarwals together or when she saw Adi with his family, she
couldn't help feeling a pang of envy.

He stopped and stared at her, his face set, "If I could bring him back, I
know my Daadu will be the happiest person. I've been thinking about this
and I'm going to try my best."

He looked so earnest and so unlike the Adi she knew, a part of her
wanted to smile but the moment was too serious, he was confiding in
her, something so personal to him, she was touched, on an impulse, she
reached for his hand and gently squeezed it, "Adi," she told him
reassuringly, "it will work out, keep the faith."

He just stared at her until she shyly drew her hand away from his. Then
he blinked and thanked her. "It's easy to talk with you Maithili," he told
her seriously, "I don't usually discuss my family. I hope you will not
speak of this to anyone." She reassured him on that ground and they
continued walking towards his car. "Chachu is taking quite a long time,"
he began, just as Nikhil Mehra crossed the road and came up to them.

Nikhil Mehra looked surprised to see her but he smiled as Adi told him
that they were going to drop her home. He had several packages with
him which he stashed in a corner of the back seat. Soon Adi pulled up in
front of her house. As she got out of the car, Adi reminded her, "7:00 pm
tomorrow evening, remember." She nodded, smiled and thanked them
and left. She turned to see Adi speed away.

Here's Chapter 9.
Chapter Nine

She was waiting for him at the gate to her apartment, he saw, as he
turned to park near the gate. She walked towards him wearing a Chelsea
home jersey over blue jeans, her hair tied back in a high ponytail, a
Chelsea scarf tied round her neck.

She looked so nice, he thought, he'd never seen her in jeans before. It
was really strange how the more he looked at her nowadays, the more he
thought she was beautiful. Adi, you've lost it!

She was smiling, he saw, as she reached the car. "You had to drive an all
red car today, huh?" she asked him with a mock grimace, as she got in.

"Of course! Red is the colour of the day today, the colour of victory! By
the way, you look very nice," he told her.

She looked at him, her cheeks slightly pink, "Thanks Adi, but it's this
jersey you know. You should try it some time."

He laughed, sticking his tongue out at her and resisting an urge to reach
out and ruffle her ponytail Where on earth did these impulses come
from?

As they drove away, he looked at her, "We pick up Dhruv on the way." She
nodded, a bright smile still on her face.

"Some music", he asked her, "just FM" she told him. He switched on to FM
and strains of music filtered in.

"So what sort of music do you listen to?" He asked her.

"I'm not too fond of heavy metal and stuff but I can listen to almost
anything else," she told him, "What about you?"

"Oh! entirely mood based," he told her.

"Do you listen to Bollywood music?" she asked.

"I'm a Mumbai boy, Maithili, of course I listen to Bollywood music", he
told her.

"Ooo..hhh! I love this song," she said suddenly, leaning back in her seat
happily.

Adi increased the volume a little and they listened to Rahat Fateh Ali
Khan's "O Re Piya." When it was over, she sighed softly, "That's so
wonderful. What a soulful voice"

Then the song "Tere Bin" from Bas Ek Pal came on and she sighed. "If any
guy I knew sang so well, I would definitely be in love with him", she told
him with a smile.

"Maithili," he told her, "I must tell you that I don't think Lover Boy can sing
at all."

She rolled her eyes at him.

"No seriously, Maithili, he sang a song once in junior high and believe
me, the hyenas from the neighbouring zoo came across to laugh at the
spectacle he created. And then……they couldn't stop….. laughing, that
is!"

She laughed and then looked at him through reproving eyes, "Come on
Adi, don't exaggerate"

"No, really," he grinned, "ask the hyenas, they're still under observation in
Hospital."

She shook her head, "You are so biased Adi." And how!

"Tell me, why do you dislike him so much," she asked him softly.

"I've always disliked him." he told her frankly, grimacing slightly.

"When you're in boarding school," he continued, "all boys at that, likes
and dislikes get formed very easily. You're not going to like this but I
think, merely my personal opinion mind you, and please don't take
offence." She shook her head.

"I feel he's weak, he gives up very easily and keeps preaching all the time.
But the reason I hated him the most was that in school, he was always
carrying tales of us, well basically, dhruvie, veer, jeet and me to the
teachers and we used to end up in a lot of trouble because of him. School
rivalries take a long time to fade, if ever, you know, and somehow, I can't
see how he has changed any much." And now I find I dislike him even
more because you like him so much!

"So, have you taken offence already?"

She had listened to him silently and turned to look at him, "No, why
should I take offence, that is how you see him."

She continued slowly, "I have seen a different side to him, he's very caring
towards his family, his sisters. I have seen him take on troubles so that
his sisters don't suffer. I know he's not very confident about his abilities
but that's because he's never had anyone praise him. He doesn't have a
very happy time at home, you know."

"But Adi, I think the truth of the matter is that sometimes, you see good
things in the people you care for even knowing their flaws."

"That's the way it is with our dearest friends and the people we care for
the most in life, isn't it?" she continued, "We accept our dearest ones with
all their flaws and suddenly after a while, we realize that even the flaws
are very dear to us."

He turned to look at her seriously, "You really love him very much, don't
you?"

She was silent for a moment and he wondered why he was asking such a
question when he knew he would hate the answer. Torture yourself a
bit more, why don't you?

She looked at him, "Until a few days ago, I would have said "yes" very
convincingly Adi. But the truth is that I am very confused about my
feelings right now." What!

Adi was so surprised and happy that he brought the car to a halt at
the corner of the road.

He looked at her, surprised.

"I've known Pranay since childhood you know," she told him, "He's very
demonstrative of his feelings. I mean, you can easily see if he's angry or
happy or brooding or unhappy. He just makes it very very clear."

" The last week, actually even before, I have seen a Pranay who has just
two thoughts in his mind, one to write his book and the other - to be with
Mallishka. And Mallishka also seems to be serious about him, I think."

" He's told me things she does for him and surely she must love him very
much to take care of him so much. He spoke to me every day last week,
you know, it's so ironic, he wanted to tell me how seriously he feels for
Mallishka."

She sighed and looked at him, "They are in love Adi and I have basically
come to terms with the fact that Pranay only thinks of me as a friend. And
do you know what was most surprising Adi?" she asked him, pausing for
a breath.

"What?" he asked automatically, wondering whether she could see how
happy he was at that statement.

"I felt like I'd already accepted this in my mind. So, believe me, I didn't
feel like the earth was shattering or anything. I didn't even cry Adi"

She sounded so amazed by this still that he leaned forward and tugged on
her ponytail, "I'm glad, crying over that loser is an absolute waste of
tears."

"Adi", she looked at him reproachfully, "Pranay is very dear to me, don't
say things like that.

She continued, "Sometimes I think I should just give up I can't tell you
how delighted I would be!
But then again sometimes, I again get very
confused. Cmon girl, use the sense that the Good Lord gave you!
And he's such a dear friend and he will always be. More's the pity!
He rolled his eyes and started the car again.

"I'm taking all this very philosophically", she continued, aware that she
was rambling.

"I was reading a book the other day, 'The nature of emotions' and Adi, I
suddenly thought that I've been fretting so much about Pranay but I don't
even know if I have been able to appreciate what love actually is." Leave
it to the fair sex to over-analyse everything

"It's such a small word but it combines such a varied gamut of emotions,
the equations changing for the purpose of defining relationships."

"There's attraction, there's caring, there's knowing you would do
whatever it takes to keep someone happy, that a simple smile could make
you feel happy, that a simple reproof could leave you feeling shattered,
that even silence could be more eloquent between you than an abundance
of conversation, that you instinctively know what makes the other tick,
that you can see all the flaws in the other person and still feel that no one
else could be so dear, it seems so simple and yet so complex, that you
could feel so much for another person," she shook her head, "and this is
still…, Oh! Adi, it's so difficult to put into words", Yeah, this is mental…
loony bin stuff! Especially if thought in conjunction with that sissy boy!

"I can't even explain," she looked at him ruefully. "How can I know what I
feel when I can't even explain, not even to myself." Too much analysis
my dear, does that to a person!

"Maithili," he told her smiling, "don't analyse things to death," he bit off
the sweetheart that had nearly followed his sentence, Now this is
getting annoying! I don't call any girl sweetheart!

"I'm sorry," she told him, a sheepish smile on her face, "I have been
rambling like an idiot. Thanks for listening so patiently Adi."

"Anytime," he winked at her.

"Have you ever been in love Adi", she asked him softly, "not your
flirtations, mind you, I know you're a master at that (he grinned) but love?

"No, I've never been in love and I hope I never do, especially if love makes
you feel the things that you just listed out, boy, that's positively
terrifying!" he told her with a smile.

Maithili rolled her eyes at him and shook her head, "Adi, you're silly"

"I aim to please, madam" he inclined his head theatrically and she
laughed.

"But, you know Adi, that day I saw your parents together at the mall, Adi,
there was something so wonderful between them, so strong, so precious,
such a lovely bond, I think seeing them together started me thinking
about all this."

Adi smiled softly, "Yeah! they are pretty besotted about each other. I
guess when I think of love, not that I think about it any much, mind you,"
she rolled her eyes, "I think of them too." She smiled at him.

His hand phone rang and he looked at the caller id. "I'll just take this call,"
he murmured out of the corner of his mouth, "Druvie, be there in five
minutes, on the outer street….yeah, alright."

He maneuvered the car along a narrow lane and then turned around a
corner. "Here we are, that's Dhruv's house," he told her, as he turned into
the driveway. "Raichand House," Maithili read out the engraving on the
corner of the huge gate.

I am so sorry to hear of your accident, it must have been a terrible time for you 😭 I am very happy that you are recovering now, and have come home. Please don't apologise for not posting the fic - nothing is more important than one's health! 😉

Now, coming to the 2 updates - simply superb!! I had all but forgotten what Adi-Maithili's chemistry was like, thanks to the track in the show, and I DEFINITELY had forgotten what naughty, bratty Vikram Aditya Mehra was like so your updates have made me a very happy girl! Loved the scenes in Starbucks, the car and in the latest update, AM's naughty flirting through their football preferences what's more, I am so glad that Nikhil is back too - the chem between him and Gunn in your ff is something that wasn't really explored in the show, but I'm loving it!

I esp. loved this bit in the last update:

"No seriously, Maithili, he sang a song once in junior high and believe
me, the hyenas from the neighbouring zoo came across to laugh at the
spectacle he created. And then……they couldn't stop….. laughing, that
is!"

She laughed and then looked at him through reproving eyes, "Come on
Adi, don't exaggerate"

"No, really," he grinned, "ask the hyenas, they're still under observation in
Hospital."

🤣 🤣 🤣

Take care of yourself 😛
