Adi has been working non stop for the past few hours. He looked at the time, it said 5 pm. He knew that any minute his daadu would call to make sure he was coming home. The thought made Adi smile. He was 24 years old, yet he could never say no to his grandfather.
Before he went to pick up Maithilli, he left some instructions behind for her new job. He knew she would come back to work tomorrow and he didn't want her to work as an assistant. He was sure, she would like her new job or at least he hoped. He called Tannu to tell Maithilli he was coming in half an hour.
Maithilli was busy in the kitchen helping Ramu kaka, when Tannu called her from behind.
"Bhabhi, you are still here…Bhaiya just called, he is coming to pick you up in like 30 minutes"
"Yes coming…"
Tannu was in Maithilli's room searching something in the cupboard. "What are you looking for…?" asked Maithilli. "I'm looking for a something pink…" she said teasingly Maithilli smiled at her "I don't just wear pink…you know"
"I know…but bhaiya seems to like you in pink…" replied Tannu with a big smile on her face.
Maithilli laughed at her childishness and pushed her out of the room so she could get ready peacefully. She, like usual, wore a simple pastel colour salwar kameez. She had tied her hair up, but then looked at herself at the mirror. She looked much better when hair was down. She was applying her lip gloss, when she heard a honk. He was here.
Adi was waiting in his car outside. He wondered where he could take her. One thing he knew for sure was that she didn't like fancy places, she was a simple girl with simple likes.
As Maithilli came out and sat in the car, Adi asked "Is there any place you would like to go?"
She didn't know if he would like it or not, but she thought of giving it a try. It was a wonderful place and she hadn't gone there in a long time.
"Well…if you don't mind…there is quiet place next to the beach. Its small but its very beautiful and the food is great" she said
He seemed to be happy with the idea. A quiet place beside the beach would be better than any idea he had in mind. The music was playing in the car as the drove quietly to their destination.
Once in the restaurant, they sat beside the window. Maithilli had ordered the food as she was more familiar with the menu. Adi sat there, admiring the beautiful waves of the sea. He couldn't remember the last time he had felt this peaceful. He was always so busy with work that he had forgotten about himself.
While eating, they had some small conversations. Once they were finished with dinner, Maithilli ordered the desert. Adi noticed how one by one the other couples started to dance along the slow music. He looked at Maithilli, who seemed lost somewhere.
"Am I suppose to ask you to dance" he asked
Maithilli smiled at him "You could… but you don't have to"
"Good…I'm not that good at it anyways…" he said as the waiter brought them their deserts.
Maithilli looked at him while he ate quietly. Never had she thought she would sit at a restaurant with Vikram Aditya Mehra, that too as her husband. Just a few days back, she wasn't even able to talk to him and here she was today, having dinner with him. Moreover, she never thought she would actually enjoy it.
As Adi went to pay the bill, he asked Maithilli to wait for him in the car.
Once he came out, instead of finding her seated in the car, he saw her roaming on the beach like a little girl. Maithilli liked walking on the beach. It brought back a lot of memories. Good memories. She remembered how her brother would soak her in water while her parents would just sit and watch them. She looked up at the stars as some tears slowly fell on her cheek.
Adi, who had been watching her for a while, noticed them and walked towards her.
As soon as she heard footsteps behind her, she wiped off her tears.
"Are you okay…?" he asked "You can talk to me if you want…"
"hmm…no its okay"
"You cold…?" he said taking off his coat
"No…it's okay…I like the cold wind against my skin"
However, Adi still put his coat on her shoulder. "I don't want my sister and grandfather to blame me if you get sick…they seem to favour you over me nowadays" he said trying to make her smile. He knew something was wrong, but he didn't want to push it.
They both sat peacefully on the sand, watching the waves and the stars. It was indeed a beautiful night.
"You know…I use to come here often with my family…"she said quietly.
Now he understood her sudden change. She missed her parents. He didn't say anything; he waited for her to say more.
"My brother and I use to play along the beach…he was always full of energy…and now…I just hope he would recover and we could play here like before…"
Adi looked at her. She had a brother and he didn't know. He thought that she had lost everyone in that accident.
"Where is your brother…?" he asked
She looked at his confused look. She didn't usually like to talk about it but today everything seemed different. She told him about Ayaan's condition and his treatments. She told him how he was gradually progressing. Adi asked her that he would like to meet him if it was okay with her. While Maithilli was delighted by this, she promised to take him along with her, whenever she would go to visit him next time.
"You know… Adi." She hesitated while saying his name "I have come to a conclusion about you…"
"Conclusion...that too in one day of marriage…" he said
"Not one day…I been observing you the past week"
"So you've been spying on me for the past week? He said teasingly with a smirk but continued "So what conclusions have you come up with?" he asked. He was curious enough to know what she thought about him
"You are not what you seem from the outside…You may have a crazy temper, which makes everyone run away form you, you might seem carefree and may well live up to your reputation but you have a good heart…You would never hurt your love ones…you would cross all the limits for their happiness"
Adi didn't say anything. It wasn't the first time someone had said something good about him but for what so reason, he felt overjoyed. Her words had touched him deeply. They stayed there for a while and then left. As they came back home, they were surprise to see Suyesh and Tannu still awake.
"Is everything ok?" asked Adi.
"Everything is fine bhaiya…daadu just wanted to give something to bhabhi" said Tannu
"Adi beta…this is a necklace that I gifted your daadi on our first day of marriage and when Shikhar married Mayuri he gifted this to her on their first day of marriage, this is like a family tradition this necklace has been in our family for generations …and today, I want you to give this to Maithilli…Come and make her wear it" said Suyesh.
Adi obeyed as told. He tied the necklace around her neck. It was a very beautiful gold chain with a pendent.
Once they were in their room, Maithilli started to take it off, Adi however had stopped her.
"What are you doing?" he questioned
"This is your family's tradition and it's your mother's and I couldn't…" but before she could finish Adi interrupted "As long as you are in this house, you are my wife and being my wife, you have all the rights to wear it" Saying this, he left to change.
Maithilli stood there for a while wondering if she actually had the right to wear. She didn't come up with any conclusion nonetheless, decided to keep it. She went to the closet to take out the pillows and placed them on the bed. Before he came out, she had already fallen asleep.
*****
The next morning, Adi had left early for work; he had an important meeting to attend. Maithilli, however, stayed back as she had to take Suyesh for a regular check up.
As she entered the office building, some congratulated her and some gave her weird looks. She couldn't care less what people thought about her marriage, all she knew for the moment was she was quite enjoying it.
To her surprise, when she went to her cabin, she found a new girl sitting at her place.
"Who are you?" she asked being as polite as possible, even though she was a bit irritated to find someone sitting in her chair
"I'm Kaajal, the new assistant, I just joined a few days ago" replied the girl.
Maithilli stood there looking at the girl. "How could he do this to me?" She thought.
He had promised her that she would keep her job. She was furious, she couldn't believe that yesterday, she had told him how nice he was and today he turned out to be a complete jerk.
She walked towards his office and didn't even bother to knock on the door.
He saw her enter and he didn't bother to say anything. He was sitting comfortably on his chair reading a newspaper. Maithilli stood in front him, few minutes ago, she was about to scream and now having him in front of her, she couldn't even remember how to start. Adi looked at her, she looked furious. He knew why she was here but he waited for her to say something. Nevertheless, he ended up talking first.
"Do you have anything to say?"
"No…I mean Yes…we had a deal, you would let me keep my job remember" she said trying talk as calmly as she could.
"Yes…I remember" he replied
"Then, why is there someone in my cabin…"
"Well about that…you told you wanted to keep the job…you still have a job, I'm just giving you a promotion" he said with a smirk on his face
"Promotion???" asked a confuse Maithilli.
"Yes promotion…well instead of working as an assistant, you will be my personal secretary…its better for my image…you know you are my wife and it doesn't look good if you work as an assistant…"
"Personal secretary…and what exactly does a personal secretary do" she asked
"Well nothing much…you will have to organize my meetings and social affairs…in short you will just have to follow me everywhere…it's a better job, believe me…" He said getting back to reading his paper
"And the best part is that you get to stay in this office and of course your pay will increase" he said folding the paper and pointing towards the small desk.
She looked at him and back at the desk. Not only was she his wife, but now she was also his personal secretary. She wondered what else he had in stored for her.
As she sat behind her new desk, he handed her a file. It was about a charity function that was to take place at their hotel in the coming week. He told her to get started as there was not much time.
They were both so tangled up with work that they didn't realise the time pass. Since it was getting late, Adi told Maithilli to go home. And he would be coming late as he had some pending work to finish.
*****
It was already past 11pm and Adi hadn't arrived from office. Maithilli was about to call him, when she heard his car outside. As she opened the door for him he was surprise to see her still awake.
"I'll heat the food…you go and freshen up" she said as she headed in the direction of the kitchen and Adi obeyed like a little kid
He came to the dining table to find everything in place. Maithilli served him and herself. He was surprise that she hadn't already eaten.
"You didn't have to wait for me you know…" he said as he finished his meal.
"I know…but I also know that it's boring eating alone by yourself" she said with a smile on her face.
She took the plates and went towards the kitchen. Why did her little gestures and words mean so much to him he thought as he went upstairs in his room. When Maithilli came back from the kitchen, she saw Adi placing the pillows on the bed.
As she lay on her side of the bed, she said "Good Night…Mr. Vikram Aditya Mehra" She liked calling him that even though he hated it. Much later, he mumbled back "Good Night…….Mrs. Mrs Vikram Aditya Mehra" but he was sure she hadn't heard him.
Coming up: Maithilli's friend's Entry…and Adi not liking their bond…
