Chapter 5
"The Wedding"
For the past four days, Tannu hadn't let go of Maithilli. She took her everywhere, whether it was to choose the dresses, selecting the hall, or ordering the catering. Tannu made sure that everything pleased Maithilli. She wanted her Bhaiya and Bhabhi to have the best wedding. Everyday Tannu would come and pick her up in the morning and at the evening, after dinner, Adi would drop her back home. This had been Maithilli's daily routine for the past days, but she never complained, she liked to spend time with and Suyesh. Maithilli and Tannu had become like sisters and Suyesh was like a father figure that was missing in her life.
Like every day, Tannu came to pick Maithilli. However, they weren't going to the mall or to see any wedding hall. The night before, Tannu told Maithilli that she wanted her to meet someone.
They were both sitting in the coffee shop, but the person seemed to be late.
"So…Tannu tell me, this friend of yours is a 'She' or 'He'…" asked Maithilli. Tannu had slightly blushed. Seeing Tannu blush, Maithilli understood that this friend of hers was indeed someone special.
"Oh… here he is" said Tannu with an excitement in her voice and went towards him.
"So…Bharat why are you late?"
"I'm sorry Madam…I'm a doctor and you know that it's not easy for me to take out time in the middle of the day…"
"Bharat, you always have the same excuse…you better start coming up with a new one next time"
"Ok baba…I said na, I'm sorry…now lets go meet your Bhabhi. I wonder what kind of girl actually agreed to marry your brother?" he said teasingly.
Tannu who had taken his statement seriously, hit him on his shoulder. "My brother is better than you" she said and pulled him with her as she headed towards Maithilli
"Bhabhi…this is Bharat" she said shyly
Maithilli introduced herself as well and asked Bharat to sit down. They were all having fun discussing about the wedding.
"Bhabhi…you know why I'm working so hard on your wedding…It's because once your wedding is done, you will have to fix mine" said Tannu with a big smile on her face.
Maithilli smiled at Tannu and asked "Does Adi know?"
"Only if this duffer had the courage to talk my brother" replied Tannu looking at Bharat.
"What duffer, you want me to go and tell your brother, Adi bhaiya I'm in love with your sister…he is going to kill me on the spot"
Maithilli couldn't stop laughing after hearing Bharat. "Why are you laughing bhabhi…you must be aware of your soon to husband's temper" asked Bharat.
Maithilli didn't answer. Yes, she knew about his temper. However, in these past four days, she had seen a different Vikram Aditya Mehra. He was someone completely different when he was with his family. He was loving and caring. He would smile, laugh and he would even crack jokes. And she liked this sight of his.
After a while, Bharat had got a call from the hospital. Before he left, he made Maithilli promise to help him later. And Maithilli happily agreed.
Once Bharat had left, Maithilli looked at Tannu. She could clearly see the love in her eyes.
"Don't worry; your brother is going to like him. He is a nice guy" said Maithilli
"I hope he does…and if he doesn't, you are there to make him" replied Tannu

After there small meeting at the coffee shop, both Tannu and Maithilli went to finalize a few things about the wedding and after headed straight to the Mehra mansion.
They were all sitting in the living room looking at Adi's childhood pictures. As Maithilli went through the pictures, she couldn't stop laughing. He seemed always have those hair which would come on his friends. Adi who had arrived from work, was watching them from far. Seeing them all happy, brought a smile on his face. And all this happiness was due to his and Maithilli's so called marriage.
Just like every other evening, Adi was dropping Maithilli back home. He had told her that he had announced their wedding at work today. They must probably all wonder how the quiet Maithilli Agarwal had seduced the boss, thought Maithilli. And suddenly it made her laugh.
"What's so funny?" asked Adi
Realizing that she wasn't alone she replied "Nothing"
"Something must be funny…or not you wouldn't have laughed like that…that too in front of me" he said keeping on eye on the road
"Its just…I was wondering what the people thought about our marriage…they must be wondering how I…I mean…how I managed to seduced the boss…" she said looking out at the window.
Now he was the one laughing. She was right…they must all be wondering. Only if they knew the truth.

Today was the mehendi ceremony at Adi's house. Suyesh had insisted Maithilli to come along. Maithilli was surrounded by girls putting mehendi on her hand, while Tannu kept teasing her. Tannu made sure the name of Adi was clearly written in a beautiful pattern on Maithilli hand. She had even brought Adi to come and see it. He glanced at Maithilli's hands. It brought some weird feeling within him. It felt strange to see his name in graved with mehendi on someone's hand. And he knew that this was only the beginning. Tomorrow, it would be worse. Tomorrow, he would have to take vows around the sacred fire. Vows that he did not intend to fulfil, at least not fully.

Adi was sitting at the mandap, waiting for Maithilli. As everyone's eyes went in the direction of the bride, who was slowly descending the stairs, Adi took a quick look at Maithilli. He was right, pink did her and she looked beautiful he thought. "Very beautiful" Maithilli came and sat beside him, however, her eyes looked down. The pandit said some prayers and asked them to stand up in order to exchange the jai mala. As they exchanged the jai mala, Maithilli looked up at Adi. There was something in her eyes. It was not hope, nor was it love or fear. All he knew was that whenever he looked at those eyes, he would sense a bizarre feeling in him.
The pandit then asked Adi to take hold of Maithilli's hand for the pheres. Hand in hand, Adi and Maithilli were going around the holy fire and repeated the vows after the pandit, while everyone was throwing flowers on them. Once the sixth phere was taken, Maithilli came in front of Adi to take the last one. After that, Adi tied the mangalsutra around her neck and put sindoor on her forehead. They were married, his grandfather's dream was finally fulfilled.
It was already past midnight, when Adi and Maithilli entered their room. Adi went straight to the bed and took a pillow.
"You can stay on the bed…I'll take the couch" he said
Maithilli looked at the couch and at the bed and then at him. There was no way his six frame would fit in the couch. She looked back at the bed; it was in fact a big bed.
"Do you have extra pillows?" she asked
"Yeah…there are some in the closet…but why do you need extra pillows for?"
She didn't answer him. She went to the closet and took out two pillows and placed them in the middle of the bed to make some sort of partition.
"You can sleep on the left side while I sleep on the right" she said not looking at him and went to the washroom to change.
Adi didn't argue. She was the one who had come up with the idea and the bed looked way more comfy than the couch. As she came out, she saw him already asleep. She took a quick glance at him and slowly slid under the blanket on her side of the bed. From now on, she was no longer Maithilli Agarwal, she was Maithilli Agarwal…Mrs Maithilli Vikram Aditya Mehra.
*****
The next morning, when Adi woke up, he did not find Maithilli at his side. He looked at the time, it was already past 9. How did he sleep for that long, he wondered. He quickly rushed at the washroom to take a quick early morning shower.
Maithilli entered the room with a cup of Tea. As she placed it on the table, Adi came out of the shower. She looked him and immediately turned around.
"I…I had come to bring you… tea" she said quickly and left the room.
Adi couldn't quite understand her sudden reaction. Then, as he turned around, he saw himself in the mirror. He had taken a shower and he only had a towel wrapped around his waist. He smiled at himself, he had forgotten that he was now a 'married' man and that he was sharing his room with someone else. He couldn't walk around like this anymore.
Adi came down, wearing as usual a business suit and headed towards the door
"Where are you going Adi beta" asked Suyesh
"Daadu…I need to go at work…"
"Bhai…its Sunday…moreover, you have just got married yesterday…you can't possibly go to work" came Tannu's voice from behind.
"Yes beta…your sister is right" said Suyesh "You can't leave my bahu alone on her first day…"
"Daadu…I need to go to work, its important…I'll…I'll take Maithilli out for a dinner…." he said
"You better be back before 6 pm or not I'll come and get you" ordered Suyesh
Adi smiled at his grandfather and left. As he drove for work, he wondered how many more compromises he would have to do. If getting married wasn't already enough. He would now even have to take his 'wife' out on a dinner. What else did fate store for him in the coming future, he did not know.
Coming up: Dinner and Maithilli's new job
