Preeti Puri takes to theatre!
Preeti Puri whose claim to fame has been Zee TV's Mamta where she essays a dark character (Tanisha) is gung ho about her first new comedy play Aa Phasa
Phasa which will be staged in September in Dubai followed by Mumbai. The Mumbai based actor will play a high society prostitute (Menaka) in the two hour play opposite Nasir. "I play Neha, a very Indian character and she is the Chief Minister's daughter who is a Kathak dancer. The reason I took up this offer is because it's a very nice and positive role," says the pretty actor who has refused many movie offers in the past. "I am very shy of roles which require intimate scenes and require me to wear skimpy clothes." Viewers might recall that the actor has also done a few Balaji shows. Apart from doing some bit roles in Kasautii Zindagi Kay, Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahiin To Hoga, Preeti had also essayed a meaty role in Ekta's Kehna Hai Kuch on Sony but somehow the show failed to rake in the TRPs. Recently, the actor has done a cameo in 36 China Town as well. Preeti is now keen on taking up positive roles after having played negative roles in the past and has been learning Kathak for the past three months. Here's wishing the actor all the best and hope she is able to break the negative mould soon. |
And since no one is willing to cast her in younger roles, the actress has more free time on hand and is using it to hone her singing skills. When asked, Vaishnavi had this to say, "I want to play roles that reflect my personality and my liveliness. I don't want to play college girl roles obviously, but roles with more substance are what I am now looking at. I also look forward to playing characters I haven't portrayed before, like a negative personality." Now someone should make Vaishnavi understand that in television, at her age, nothing can be more substantial than playing the second fiddle to main lead actors. But whatever we say, the actor is all set to look and play young. And it's her strong believe in herself which has prompted her to go ahead and get a photo shoot in modern outfits that would make her look young. |
Balaji sets up base in Sharjah
Tuesday, August 22, 2006
New Delhi (UNI): After successfully capturing the Indian television soap opera market, Balaji Telefilms is now all set to weave its magic over the West Asian market with the setting up of its 100 per cent subsidiary at Sharjah for the production of the ''can't do with or without'' serials. The Sharjah arm of the company is expected to be operational there by the first week of November this year. The production house has already bagged one order to produce a serial and is negotiating with different channels for other serials there, a company statement said.
The increasing popularity of the Balaji serials has fuelled a 38.84 per cent growth in net profit to Rs 17.3 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2006 as against Rs 12.5 crore in the corresponding period last year. The maiden and the most popular offering of the production house -- Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, began way back in the year 2000, and is still topping the charts in India, in terms of its TRP.
Other serials like 'Kahiin To Hoga' and 'Kavyanjali' also consistently figure in the top 30 programmes on prime time, an aspect that could also strengthen Balaji Telefilms' case for a higher price card for its commissioned programmes.
Ms Ekta Kapoor, the creative head of Balaji Telefilms, has produced and co-produced all her soaps with names starting from letter 'K'. Balaji Telefilms also has a profitable presence in film production. The company, in which Star Group has a 25 per cent stake, has cash resources worth Rs 160 crore, and Balaji aims to increase this amount by at least 50 per cent over the next 12 months.
Balaji all set to launch Kis Rishtey Se
The K factory (Balaji Telefilms) is all set with the starcast of its new show Kis Rishtey Se (KRS). The show promises a great lineup of actors and the audience will see a few surprising faces too! Panchi Bora (remember the lead of Kitni Mast hai Zindagi on MTV?) has been nailed down as the main protagonist of the show and the story revolves around her. While Shabbir Ahluwalia will play one of the male leads, the production house is still looking for the second one. Karan Wahi was offered the role earlier, but he turned it down as he desperately needed a break after continously doing Remix for Star One. The audience is in for a major surprise as Supriya Pilgaonkar has been pencilled in for the show (playing Aarti). Ronit Roy will be seen portraying her husband (Inder). He is currently doing two Balaji shows, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi and Kasautii Zindagi Kay. Ipshita, the creative head for KRS says, "The story of this soap is about two families, Goinka's and Sherigill's." She adds, " More or less things have beenfinalized, only the actors have to be decided for the other house (Sherigill's- which belongs to the male protagonist)." Apart from these boosters, Neena Kulkarni, Aaliya, Gaurav Gupta, newcomer Roshmita, will add more spice to the show. Ipshita adds, " We haven't started shooting as of now, but it will happen soon." The show is slated for the 10.00 p.m. slot on Star One and Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka will be pushed down to the 10.30 p.m slot. KRS will certainly stand out amongst the other Balaji shows gushing in. The reason being Panchi Bora makes a comeback and Supriya enters the Balaji camp! And if this is not enough, Ronit and Shabbir 's charm will definitely strike the chord. What say? |
Dron drown from K Street Pali Hill to India Calling |
As Dron in K Street Pali Hill, Vipul made a great impact but was soon replaced. That didn't bother him much though. He kept trying and is now back in action as a cool yuppie in India Calling on Star One. Your stint in K Street... seemed to be a smooth sail initially. What went wrong? Why did you quit abruptly? Well, nothing actually. Nor did I leave the serial midway. My dates were clashing with a Bollywood project I had signed then, so I had no choice but to leave. You need to concentrate wholeheartedly on a venture that you undertake. A lukewarm approach can hamper your commitment. You have to be clear cut, not in two minds. Then what prompted you to take up India Calling? The script was awesome, I couldn't refuse it. Moreover, the film I was doing was almost complete. India Calling is directed by Bhushan Patel, who's also made Guns and Roses, Jeet and a string of hit films. I found the storyline exciting too. You play the male protagonist Aditya in the serial. Do you identify yourself with the character? Maybe to some extent. It has several shades to it. Aditya is an out-and-out cool brat with a heart of stone as his only grey vice. However, he's a normal, contemporary lad with an element of softness too. I mean, on the whole he's not a bad fellow. And his nicer side is portrayed through his affair with the female lead... Exactly! Even a tyrant melts when Cupid strikes. Chandni, (played by Manasi Parekh) the heroine, comes as a perfect foil to Aditya's disposition. They not only hail from different social strata but are brought up in contrasting setups. While the man flaunts his sports car and safari suits, the girl in her desi demeanour talks of her traditional views. In the beginning, there's a conflict but then it gradually takes a backfoot when both fall in love. After all, opposite poles do attract at some point or the other. Apart from TV, you've done a few stage shows. So you aren't really a newcomer. Well, I had worked with the ACME (A Common Man's Entertainment) troupe as an amateur artiste. And we did showcase some plays on issue-based, social themes that got rave reviews from all quarters. For instance, we performed Ramlila soon after the Godhra carnage and based the production on Hindu-Muslim riots. Besides, Surya Ke Pehli Se Surya Ke Antim Kiran, adapted from Surendra Sharma's Hindi novel, was also critically acclaimed. As for films, my debut film Anjaan has just hit the theatres. A Hansal Mehta romantic thriller, the film's been produced by Anil Vohra. Others in the cast are Mehek (of Nayi Padosan fame) and Aamir Ali (of Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai). |

Coming up on March 11 is 'Birdsong', co-written by Vikram Kapadia and Mohit Mehra and directed by Ponaam Sareen. "It talks about how climbing new peaks is possible if we hear the little bird that resides within us who is yearning to be set free," elaborates Sareen.
The play sees co-actors Nisha Sareen and Vikram Kapadia, who play father and daughter in 'K Street Pali Hill', come together on stage for the first time.
"Nisha and I share a father-daughter relationship in real life and hence I decided to help out in the play," says Kapadia. He modestly adds, "I have only fine-tuned the script which is written by Mohit."
For Nisha, working with Vikram was like old times, "I have a special relationship with him and respect and trust him." The role of the protagonist Piali was challenging. "After a long time I found something I was passionate about," she adds.
Along with Kapadia and Sareen, Hrishikesh Kannan also forms part of the star cast. "Mohit called me in the middle of the night and said he had written a play and wanted to call the main character Hrishikesh Kannan," laughs Hrishikesh. "I read the script in one sitting and identified with the character completely."
Organised under the banner of Speed, Sareen goes on to explain what the organisation stands for. "They believe in personality development and confidence building but prefer to tackle this through drama kinetics. I started out nearly two decades ago with 5-year-old school children," she explains, "and soon realised that their parents and young adults too had many queries and could do with the kind of programmes we offer at Speed."
Having received tremendous appreciation at their show in Bangalore, Sareen and company are ready to open to Mumbai audiences and take the play across the country. "Our first official show was in Mumbai but it was a corporate show. Now we are ready for a larger audience," concludes Sareen with her fingers crossed.
