With black dreses especially when you are going to be photographed, it has to be thick enough that it does not expose too much. Just imagine if she had worn white undergarments, it would have been ten times worse. Also the clothes may have not been that translucent in normal lighting but with dozens of cameras, the transparency of less thick fabric may become more visible. Nonetheless it is not flattering, and she should have worn a gown or a sari, something more fitting for the occasion as well as her body type.
