And the winner of Jhalak is...Gurmeet Choudhary
Gurmeet Choudhary wins Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa
After 16 weeks of hard core dancing extravaganza, India has chosen Gurmeet Choudhary as the winner of Colors dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa!

Gurmeet a novice and stiff dancer wooed the audiences and judges with his macho moves and stylish grooves to become a dancer par excellence. His never say die attitude got him a lot of support from his fans and well-wishers that helped him bag the coveted title. Rashami Desai Sandhu and Rithvik Dhanjani were the first and second runners up respectively. Awarding the winner were our ever inspiring jury, the purrrfect Madhuri Dixit; blockbuster director Karan Johar; and ace choreographer, Remo D'souza.

The grand finale evening not only witnessed some breath taking acts from the three finalists, but also saw two legendary actresses Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi share stage which created an epic moment.

Gurmeet Choudhary was the lone survivor who started his journey of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa from day one. Along with his talented Choreographer Shampa, he showcased some breathtaking performances like robotic hip hop, semi classical moves and international dance forms like Rumba and Paso Doble. The judges were impressed by his dedication, hard work & seamless energy.

His performance graph was filled with highs and lows especially after his shoulder injury but under Shampa's guidance, he bounced back as a fighter. Gurmeet walked away with prize money of Rs. 40 Lakhs and the title of the winner of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa!

When asked, Gurmeet said, "When I came to Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, I was just an actor but today, I can proudly say that I'm a good dancer too. I'd like to thank my wife Debina for her love & support. And most of all, I would like to thank all my fans and supporters who have stood by me through both the good and the bad times. I am where I am only because of them."

On the occasion of the Grand Finale, Manisha Sharma, Weekend Programming Head, COLORS said, "The objective this year was to deliver a never seen before experience of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa for our viewers. We are delighted with the appreciation for the show coming in across demographics and geographies making it the best reality dance show on Indian television."

Myleeta Aga,General Manager and Creative Head of BBC Worldwide Productions India added, "The essence of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is making non-dancer celebrities into dancers. Gurmeet's journey is a fine example of this journey. This season all of the contestants raised the bar of their performances by experimenting with new dance forms and concepts. The jury brought in their own flavour to make this season a memorable and entertaining one."

With innovative and engaging concepts like dancing to a live band, paying tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema, and getting paired up for performances with international Dancing with the Stars winners, this season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa stepped out of its zone and fulfilled all the promises by providing the audiences with wholesome entertainment.

After winning Jhalak..., Gurmeet Choudhary eyes Bollywood

Television actor Gurmeet Choudhary, who has won Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5, is overjoyed and overwhelmed and says that his next destination is Bollywood.

"I always wanted to do films. I hope directors have seen me perform in Jhalak... and I get a call from them that they want to cast me as the lead actor in their film," an hopeful Gurmeet told IANS over the phone from Mumbai.

Talking about the kind of movies he wants to do, he added: "People have always liked me in both action and romantic roles, so I would like to do a full packaged film that gives me a chance to do a little bit of both."

In the show's grand finale on Sunday, he competed with Rashmi Desai and Rithvik Dhanjani for the title.

Gurmeet was a dark horse, who was not in the list of regular highest
scorers, but his sheer hard work took him to the top.

"I never looked at 'Jhalak...' like a competition, I just performed and tried giving my best. The people who voted for me are not my fans, I see them as my family. I just returned their love by putting my best foot forward and winning the show. Honestly, I am very satisfied with my performances," said Gurmeet, who kept a very low profile on the show.

He also gives credit to his wife Debina, who was a constant support.

"Debina is my lucky charm. She was always there on the sets during my performance. Sometimes when she used to miss coming for the show because of her shoot, I used to get low marks.

"I am grateful to her for her support throughout this journey. I would not have done this without her," added the 28-year-old, who had many ups and downs on the show and was seen in the danger zone too.

Gurmeet debuted on the small screen in 2006, but his first big break came in the form of mythological show Ramayana, where he played Lord Rama.

However, he became popular with his 2010 show Geet - Hui Sabse Parayi. He played a snob businessman Maan Singh Khurana who falls in love with small town girl Geet, played by Drashti Dhami.

Currently he is seen as Yash Scindia on Zee TV's popular show Punar Vivah.

Gurmeet and Debina's immediate plan is to visit Ajmer shrine.

"Jhalak..." started off June 16 with 13 contestants including, Isha Sharvani, Pratyusha Banerjee, Giaa Manek, Talat Aziz, Bharti Singh, Archana Vijaya, Shibani Dandekar, Jayati Bhatia, Darsheel Safary, Sanath Jayasuriya, Sushil Kumar and Ravi Kishan."

It was judged by actress Madhuri Dixit, filmmaker Karan Johar and choreographer Remo D'Souza.

TV star Gurmeet Choudhary on winning Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5

Four months and numerous performances later, television heart-throb Gurmeet Choudhary walked away with the Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa trophy and a cash prize of Rs 40 lakh on Sunday night. t2 caught up with Gurmeet after the win…

Has the feeling sunk in yet?

All my efforts over the past four months have paid off. I am very happy. I don't have the words to express what I'm feeling right now!

What was the winning moment like?

When my name was announced, I didn't know what to do. I wanted to laugh, I wanted to cry, I wanted to hug everyone who was there with me on that stage, I even wanted to break into a little dance! I think it's the first time in my life that I have experienced so many emotions at the same time. I was actually shouting: 'Main jeet gaya, main jeet gaya!' The first thing I did was go down on my knees and thank all my fans for voting for me and helping me win.

How would you describe your Jhalak journey?

I always knew that my fans would back me and vote for me, no matter what. But I am proud to say that I chipped in with great performances through the show and made sure I never let my fans down. In the beginning, I wasn't that good because I came in as a complete non-dancer. My body was stiff and every move seemed very awkward to me. But as the show progressed, I got more and more comfortable and learnt to loosen up. I used to get very nervous before my acts, but that actually helped me because I work well under pressure. Of course, today I was very, very scared after entering the top two because I realised that I genuinely had a chance to win Jhalak.

How did you go from a non-dancer to such a major mover?

I can dance, but unlike some of the other contestants on the show, my background wasn't that of a professional dancer. I was conscious of that when I came in. I always knew that my fans would keep voting for me but I was also sure of the fact that I had to match the support of my fans with sincere effort from my end. I never wanted my fans to say: 'Hum vote toh karte hain lekin Gurmeet ka dance itna achcha nahi hota'. Living up to the expectations of my fans kept me going through the show.

When I started out, I used to get very low marks… 6 or 7 (out of 10). However, after the first four episodes, I pulled myself together and started scoring well. I remember I scored a 10 on 10 in three or four consecutive performances. That gave me a lot of confidence. I realised that I had it in me to be a dancer and after that, I continued challenging myself and trying to better myself in every round.

Pick your most memorable moments...

First would be the opportunity to dance in front of a talented producer-director like Karan Johar. When he told me, 'Gurmeet, you are a fantastic dancer and a fabulous actor', I was so overwhelmed. All the three judges (Karan Johar, Madhuri Dixit and Remo D'Souza) were very supportive and even when they criticised, they ensured that I took it in a constructive manner. Then the acts in which I played different characters, whether it was a villain, Dracula or even a lion, were very memorable because they made me realise that I had it in me to slip into different images effortlessly. The audience used to wait to see what new character I would appear in. That was a huge high.

Who was your toughest competition?

Very frankly, from the first day my competition was only with myself. That's because every week I wanted to put up something that was better than the previous week. Of course, as the weeks went on, I got a little worried because I was running out of new ideas. And when the wild-card round happened and so many other talented dancers came in, I had to push myself even more.

How do you plan to leverage this win?

Jhalak gave me an opportunity to present a new Gurmeet to my fans. Before this, people had seen me in brooding, serious roles. Jhalak allowed me to show everyone that I can dance, loosen up and have fun. I plan to harness this experience to do stage shows, but my ultimate goal is to get into films. Everyone has seen me in soaps and on the dance floor. The next step is the big screen.
