After spending years in front of the camera, Renuka Shahane has decided to turn director. The actress has already begun writing the screenplay for the film that she will direct.
The film is based on a book by Shanta Gokhale, Renuka's mother. "So far, I am labouring over the screenplay, based on my mother's award-winning novel Rita Welingkar. It might take a little time to develop. The film will go on the floors in October," says Renuka.
Renuka has already zeroed in on the producer and some of the cast too. "My friend Ajit Bhure will produce the film. I am yet to decide about the entire cast. While working in Jeete Hain…I realised that Ashwini Kalsekar is one actress whose potential has never been utilised. I am in awe of her acting and I have approached her for my film. There are only female characters in the book, and the same will be retained in the film," she says.
The plot of the film revolves around Rita Welingkar who sacrifices her life for her family. "It's basically a women-oriented film. Rita's parents are retired and she has to shoulder all the responsibility. She has to fend for three younger sisters as well. As the plot thickens, is shown getting involved with a married man. Later, she has a nervous breakdown. It's quite a sensitive story," says Renuka.
But, doesn't it sound like Ritwik Ghatak's Meghe Dhaka Tara?
"I know it sounds similar to the revolutionary movie. But, the end of my movie is very positive and Rita gets what she truly deserves," she replies.
