Sorry for not continuing with it. For some reason I could not use Internet even for one second. I used Internet on Thursday night and, after that, I am using now. In between I could not use it at all.
I will post more stories tomorrow.

Not all people do navratri the same way. But following is the minimum you should do.

Take help of a learned pundit to read some scripture related to Goddess during these nine days. Itt can be Durga Shaptshati or some selectec chapters from Devi Bhagavatam or some other hymn related to Goddess. During these nine days, eat only one meal a day. Before eating, offer the food to Devi by putting it in front of her and praying for a few minutes. Every day, take bath in the early morning and wear clean clothes. It is better if clothes are red.

On the first day of Navratri, wake up before sunrise and take bath. During bath chant "Om Hrim Klim Chamundaye Vichchhe". Wear new clothes. It is better if clothes are red. Install Goddess Durga's statue. Keep a kalash filled with water near the statue. Put a coconut on the kalash. Keep an oil lamp burning in front of the statue. The lamp must be burning continuously for these nine days. Near the kalash, put some mud with grains inside it. Usually jau is put.

Each night, do arti and offering of flowers. Every morning, put a new flower garland around Mata's neck. Offer the coconut to Mata on the eigth day.
On the ninth day, feed nine kumari girls. Some people feed kumari girls every day of these nine days.

On the morning of the 10th day, do final arti. Take off all the nine garlands. Break the coconut. Distribute the coconut to family and friends. Drink some water from the kalash and then eat a piece of the coconut.

As you said, there are different ways. In Tamil Nadu, they worship Laxmi for first three days, Durga for next three days and Saraswati for last three days. In majority of regions, they worship Durga for first three days, Laxmi for next three days and Saraswati for last three days.

Maha Kali, Maha Laxmi, Maha Saraswati - these are forms of Durga. The form of Durga who killed Mahisasur is Maha Laxmi.
Of Laxmi also, there are many forms. The prime is Maha Laxmi. The Laxmi, which came out of samudra manthan is one form.

Let me add further to this. Maha Laxmi, Maha Kali and Maha Saraswati - each of them has four hands. According to Durga Shaptshati, Maha Laxmi created Maha Kali and Maha Saraswati.
Then,
Maha Laxmi created Brahma and Laxmi.
Maha Kali created Shankar and Sraswati.
Maha Saraswati created Vishnu and Gauri.

Brahma married Saraswati, Shankar married Gauri and Vishnu married Laxmi.
The goddess who was created from the energies of various gods is a form of Maha Laxmi. She killed Mahisasur and she has 1000 hands but in her puja, she is shown as 18-handed.
A form of Maha Kali helped Lord Vishnu in killing Madhu and Kaitabh. She has 10 hands.
A form of Maha Saraswati killed demons Shumbh and Nishumbh. She has 8 hands.

Slaying of Shumbh, Nishumbh, Raktbij, Dhumralochan and their army
Demon brothers Shumbh and Nishumbh defeated gods. Gods prayed to Devi. Goddess Ambika came out of Parvati's body. Since she came out of Parvati's physical sheath (i.e. kosh), she is also called as Kaushiki.

Demons Chand and Mund saw Ambika, who was exceedingly charming. They informed about her to Shumbh.
Shumbh sent a messenger to Ambika to bring her. The messenger went to Ambika, glorified the might of his master Shumbh and gave the message of Shumbh. The message was that she should marry Shumbh or his younger brother and how she would benefit by marrying either Shumbh or Nishumbh.
Ambika said, "Shumbh and Nishumbh are indeed sovereign of the three worlds. But, out of my foolishness, I once took vow that I would marry only the one who would defeat me in battle. Therefore, let Shumbh or Nishumbh come here and defeat me."
Messenger said, "You are haughty. Nobody in the three worlds can stand before Shumbh and Nishumbh. Indra and all other gods could not stand in battle against demons. How will you face them? Go to Shumbh and Nishumbh. Otherwise, you will have to go to them by being dragged by your hair."
Ambika said, "Yes, Shumbh and Nishumbh are so heroic. But what can I do? I took a foolish vow long ago. Go and tell the king of demons what I said. Let him do what he thinks proper."
The messenger said all this to Shumbh. Shumbh got angry. He ordered his general Dhumralochan.
Shumbh - Dhumralochan, go quickly with your army. Bring her by force, drag her by her hair. If anybody tries to save her, then kill him."
Dhumralochan tried to forcibly bring Ambika, but she killed him by uttering sound "Hum". Ambika's lion killed the army of Dhumralochan.
Shumbh sent Chand and Mund with huge army,
Shumbh - Chand and Mund, go there with large forces and bring her here quick, by dragging her by her hair or by binding her. Or, let the demons attack her with weapons. When she and her lion are wounded, then bind her and bring her.
Chand and Mund went to Ambika with huge army. They saw Ambika seated on a lion and smiling. The demons tried to capture her. Goddess Ambika became very angry. From her forehead, goddess Kali came. Kali was terrible to look at. She was armed with a sword and a noose. She was wearing tiger's skin, and a garland of skulls. Her mouth was wide open.
She killed and ate many demons. She brought heads of Chand and Mund to Ambika.
She said, "I have brought you the heads of Chand and Mund as offerings in this sacrifice of battle. Now, you please kill Shumbh and Nishumbh."
Ambika said, "You have brought the heads of Chand and Mund to me. Therefore, you will be known as Chamunda."
Demon Raktbij rushed to fight. The name Raktbij is a combination of two words "rakt" and "bij". Rakt means blood and bij means seed. He got this name because he had a boon. The boon was that if any drop of his blood fell on Earth, then another demon just like Raktbij would be born.
The energies of various gods, viz., Indra, Vishnu, Kartikeya, Varah, Mahesh, Narasimh etc. took female forms and fought with the demons. These female deities took the weapons and the vehicles of the male deities from whose energies they were created. They hit Raktbij with their weapons. Raktbij bled profusely and from his blood-drops, lots of Raktbij were produced. So many Raktbij's fought with the devis.
Ambika said to Kali - Chamunda, open your mouth wide. Drink the blood of Raktbij and also eat the demons produced from his blood."
Ambika kept on hitting Raktbij with various weapons and Kali kept on drinking his blood and devouring the demons already produced from his blood.
Now all Raktbij's were killed.
Now Shumbh and Nishumbha rushed forward with huge army. There was fierce fight. Ambika killed Nishumbh. Ambika, Kali, female deities and the lion killed many demons.
Shumbh got angry on seeing his dear brother dead.
Shumbh said, "Do not show your pride. You think that you are very powerful. But you are taking the help of these female deities."
Ambika said, "I am all alone. These goddesses are my own powers."
Then all the goddesses entered into Ambika.
Ambika said, "The numerous forms, which I projected by my power here - those have been withdrawn by me, and I stand alone. Be ready to fight."
There was fierce fight between Ambika and Shumbh. Shumbh seized Ambika and flew into the sky. They fought in the sky. After a long fight, Ambika lifted Shumbh, whirled him around and threw him down on Earth.
Shumbh got up and rushed at Ambika with raised fist. Ambika killed him with a dart.

The previous post says that Ambika, who killed Shumbh and Nishumbh came out of the body of Parvati.
The post previous to that says that a form of Maha Saraswati killed Shumbh and Nishumbh.
You may think there is some contradiction here but there is no contradiction because Parvati is a manifestation of Maha Saraswati. Therefore, you can say Maha Saraswati killed Shumbh and Nishumbh; you can say Parvati killed them or you can say that Ambika killed them. It will be most precise to say that Ambika kiled them. As an analogy, it is most precise to say that Ram killed Ravan. But we can also say that Vishnu killed Ravan because Ram is a form of Vishnu.
I thought that some of you might get confused. That is why, I clarified.
