Stories of Goddess from scriptures

This story can be found in Markandeya Puran and also in Devi Bhagavatam.

Before the current round of creation, lord Vishnu was sleeping under the effect of Yognidra. Two demons Madhu and Kaitabh appeared from his ear-wax. They wanted to kill lord Brahma, who had appeared from the lotus, sprung from Vishnu's navel.
Lord Brahma prayed to goddess Yognidra to wake Vishnu up. Yognidra came out of Vishnu's body and appeared in front of Brahma. Then Vishnu woke up. He saw the two demons. Vishnu and the demons fought for many years. Then Yognidra deluded the demons because of which they became full of pride.
They said to Vishnu, "We are happy with your power. Ask for any boon."
Vishnu said, "Be killed by my hands."

Madhu and Kitabh were shocked. They had not realized that this would happen. They saw that there was water everywhere. They got an idea/
They said, "Kill us at a place, which is not covered in water."

They thought that Vishnu would not be able to find such a place. But lord Vishnu expanded his thighs, put their heads on his thighs and killed them.

Goddess Yognidra is also called Mahakali, Bhadrakali. She has ten ten heads, ten feet, and ten hands.

Birth of Maha Laxmi from the energies of gods
Once Mahisasur was the king of demons. He was highly powerful. His real form was that of a buffalo but he could take any form at will. For many years, he performed severe penance(tapasya). Lord Brahma, being pleased with Mahisasur's tapasya, appeared before him and asked him what boon he wanted.
Mahisasur said, "I want to become immortal."
Brahma said, "One who is born must die. Ask some other boon."
Mahisasur said, "Grant me the boon that no devata, danavm human being of male gender can cause my death. Let my death happen through a woman."
As per Mahisasur's knowledge, there was no woman powerful enough to kill him. Therefore, he thought that by receiving this boon, he would get immortality.
Brahma said, "Your death will happen through a woman. No man will be able to kill you."
Then, Brahma went to his abode and Mahisasur went to his palace.

Mahisasur was puffed up with pride because of the boon. He became the king of all of the Earth. He defeated whoever fought with him. Then he fought with the gods. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiv fought on the side of the gods. There was terrible fight between gods and demons. Mahisasur won and became the king of heaven.

Thrown out of heaven, gods moved here and there. Ultimately they got tired and came to Lord Brahma and requested him to do something. Brahma took gods with him and came to Lord Shiv. Shiv said, "Mahisasur has become indefeatable because of the boon from you. From where do we find the woman who will kill him? Our wives are not capable enough to kill him. Let us go to Vishnu. He will suggest some solution."
Brahma, Shiv and all gods went to Lord Vishnu. Vishnu heard their problem and said, "Let us combine our energies and create a woman. She will kill Mahisasur."
Dazzling lights came out of the bodies of gods. These lights combined and took the form of a very beautiful woman. She had 18 hands. She was a form of Goddess Durga. This form of Durga is known as Maha Lakshmi. Gods gave her various ornaments and divine weapons. Himalay gave her lion to be used as vehicle.
Maha Laxmi killed many demons of Mahisasur and finally she killed Mahisasur.

Akhl, wasn't it Durga who killed Mahishasur?

Lakshmi was born in the Sagarmanthan (the churning of the ocean)?

Maha Kali, Maha Laxmi, Maha Saraswati - these are forms of Durga. The form of Durga who killed Mahisasur is Maha Laxmi.
Of Laxmi also, there are many forms. The prime is Maha Laxmi. The Laxmi, which came out of samudra manthan is one form.

Ah I see, I was under the impression, Durga was Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati combined together as one.

Also I know there are different Lakshmi forms, I know of 8 Lakshmi forms i.e. Gaja Lakshmi, Dhan Lakshmi, Santan Lakshmi etc.

I am gonna write a mataji story soon on here.
