Jai Maa Durga, is an adaptation from Durga Shaptshati.

Prince Surath of Chandranagri is a descendant of Manu and he is the chosen one who will rebuild the destroyed temple of Durga. The story revolves around Surath and his consort, Sumukhi, the princess of neighboring Vijaydurg. Sumukhi is a devout worshipper of the goddess Durga.

Their parents decide to get them married and their chance meeting in the ruins of the temple is designed by divine forces, to inspire them rebuild the temple. This temple has been lying in complete ruins for a few centuries, and Surath's ancestors appear to him to make him aware of his duty, as does the goddess Durga, who appears on earth in the form of nine little girls. The love story is filled with a lot of dramatic plots. Surath is overthrown from the throne, and he meets the sage, Medha Rishi. The Rishi tells the prince the story of Durga and thus makes him a devout follower of the goddess, leading to a stronger motivation to rebuild the temple.

However, rebuilding will not be an easy task, since the evil forces will do anything in their power to hinder the process. It is the story of relationships, and how circumstances affect the relationships. The love story between Sumukhi and Surath goes through upheavals because of strong beliefs in honour and duty, and also betrayal and distrust. True love may or may not overcome all obstacles.

It is the story of devotion. Sumukhi turns to the unseen force whenever she is in trouble. So strong is her belief that the goddess makes herself visible to her in the form of nine little girls. Sumukhi knows that she is always protected by the creator of the universe.

It is the story of deceit. Sumukhi's maternal uncle Durjay has his own reasons for trying to destroy her father and his relationships.

It is the story of lust and greed. Dhoomraketu lusts after Sumukhi, only to be killed unceremoniously by the brave Surath. This leads to his brother Kalketu's vengeance, and thus the destruction begins.

It is a lesson in life, with sage words from none other than the goddess herself. It is the story of good versus evil - the existence of both is important for the balance in the Universe. One cannot exist without the other, but when evil becomes too strong, divine powers have to intervene, so that mankind survives yet another era.

The show will have a lot of dramatic moments, aimed to enthrall both older and younger audiences alike. Children will particularly like Pawan, Surath's horse, and friend. He is one of the main characters in the story, and has a pivotal role. While the story of Surath is an historical one, the story of Durga is a part of Indian mythology, and the show will blend in all these worlds to bring to the audience a costume drama, shot on a scale not seen earlier on Indian television.

DURGA: The mother of all creation. She is the invincible. She is the one who created the cosmos, the universe, the Gods and Goddesses, the various worlds, zenith and the nadir, the colours of subsistence, the elements of nature, and the living beings. She is the origin of life. She is the creator, preserver and destroyer. She nourishes and protects. She is the five elements. She has a divine aura that makes even the holy Trinity bow to her. She is mostly calm, but when she gets angry, it could mean the end of existence. She is incessant, and lives in all of us.

SURATH: A 25-year-old tall, handsome, great warrior prince. He belongs to the Manu clan, and he does not know that he is born with a purpose - to bring back the glory of the Goddess Durga into the lives of his subjects, and into the world. A man of slim physique, he can take on an entire army if required. He is the quintessential dutiful son, and the most charming and honest lover. His charm lies in his loyalty, and his ethics.

SUMUKHI: A 21-year-old petite, pretty princess. She is the most devout follower of the Goddess. Her frail and soft features and mannerisms belie her strong willpower and passion. She is the dutiful daughter, and the object of desire for any full-blooded man or demon. She is an outdoors person, rides her own chariot, laughs a lot, is always pleasant, and loves her parents. Mature for her age, she is the one who stays calm when everybody else loses their reasoning abilities. There is only one force she believes in, and that is Durga.

DURJAY: Sumukhi's maternal uncle. He is about 45, and has a couple of quirky habits. His dirty teeth make his smile even more sinister. He is the commander-in-chief of his brother-in-law's army. He is a slimy man, not very tall, and his gait and physique reflect his lack of commitment to his job. He has one aim in life - to destroy his brother-in-law and take over the kingdom. He can use and throw away his sister, if need be, to attain that goal.

GARUDHWAJ: Sumukhi's father. He is the warrior king, about 50, who lives for his subjects, and rules with a firm hand. He loves his wife and daughter, and is willing to overlook the shortcomings of his wife's brother. He is an ethical and a principled man, and is not taken lightly by his enemies. He commands tremendous respect, and looks every inch the ruler of the lion kingdom, Vijaydurg.

VIJAYA: Sumukhi's mother. She is about 40, and is a loyal wife and loving mother. She is also a suitable consort to her husband, having herself come from a royal family. Her only weakness is her brother, whose faults she cannot see, and thinks that she is fortunate the two most important men in her life get along so well.

CHANDRAMUKH: Surath's father. He is about 50 and is a warrior king of another kingdom, who worships the moon. He is a descendant of Manu, and is therefore very clear about the difference between good and evil, and between duty and pleasure. He is willing to forsake his life for the good of his people.

CHANDRIKA: Surath's mother. A 40-year-old queen, and consort to the king of Chanranagri. She is a soft woman, and lives for her husband and son. Her dedication to her spouse is legendary. All she wants is to make sure that the environment in her house is calm and peaceful.

KALKETU: The king of the daanavs. He is about 40, and is a tyrannical and evil being, who is set to conquer all three worlds. He will stop at nothing to acquire land and power. He is the fierce warrior as well.

DHOOMRAKETU: The younger daanav. He is about 30, and is tall and well-built. He exudes tremendous negativity, and is detestable and feared at sight. He is the master of all he surveys, and he makes sure everybody else knows it. Forceful, aggressive, lustful, greedy and arrogant, he is always looking for trouble.

KALINDI: The Daanav queen. She is not as tyrannical as her husband but she is a loyal and honest companion to him.
