Great composition, with a soulful melody dedicated to the CHAND! Love the use of traditional instruments like sitar, tabla, sarangi and shehnai 👏 And let's not forget the inimatable lyricist of this song, the late Anand Bakshi saab. ⭐️
The song has a very difficult tune. It is less common to find film songs in which the chorus is in descending notes. The lyrics dont help the tune either, since the 'hard' 'g', 'ch', 'd', 'n', 'k' make the chorus quite staccato - to sing the chorus so smoothly is a challenge.
And as everybody has mentioned, the reason we connect to this song so well is the expression. We have heard the smile in her singing may times but here Alkaji was able to show some versatility in expression, as the antara has an interesting transition in mood, from sad to happy:
Ye Naina Bin Kajal Tarse
Barah Mahine Badal Barse 😭
Suni Rab Ne Meri Fariyaad
Gali Mein Aaj Chand Nikla 😍
Or the exquisitely emoted second antara, which brings out the feeling of anticipation in the lyrics:
Maine Tumko Aate Dekha
Apni Jaan Ko Jaate Dekha 😳
Jaane Phir Kya Hua Nahin Yaad
Jaane Phir Kya Hua Nahin Yaad
Gali mein aaj chand nikla
The song also has a good mix of straight notes and murkiyaan here and there. The minimal use of murkis and harkats makes the song sound more conversational, but there are some aptly placed harkats on words like 'yaad' for emphasis. I would have preffered these harkats to be more defined. But otherwise, as Kuhu said, she didn't go overboard at all - I particularly liked the way Alkaji sang 'Barah mahine baaadal barse' - she lengthened badal just perfectly, so it didn't seem overdone.
But SSK is correct in saying that the high notes were all over the place. It's not that the notes weren't hit, just that the voice lost clarity and precision in the high sections. And there were many high sections. The fact that the song is a solo means that Alkaji can sing at the female scale (probably somewhere around A or A sharp) - she ought to be comfortable in the high notes in such a scale. In Teri Ore, Shreya sang with RFAK and had to sing at a higher scale...
Could have been a 9/10 performance. But I'm going to be mean and give it 8/10 for the flaws.
