The problem here is, hearing it from the elitist Mrs Chaturvedi doesn't bring ,let alone any change in attitude, not even any self introspection of his attitude towards Imlie. He's as elitist as his MIL , yet he hates it when he gets the same treatment he doles out to Imlie. Reminding her all the time how she's beneath him or his family or Malini ( chandan vs mitti comparison) simply because of her lower economic class roots , inspite of fully knowing that she's a scholar student.
Which is why I find it impossible to digest that she'd even dream of asking for any kind of rights from such a man.

Ye wish to har viewer ki hai is show ki. Hum to slaps ke bhi sapne saja ke baithe hai. Pehle Imlie se, phir Aparna se, phir moon se.
