Dev Patel on his Oscar 2017 nomination: The news hasn't made its way into my brain yet

Not only Priyanka Chopra, another Indian-origin actor Dev Patel took the centre stage at 88th Academy Awards

Indian-origin British actor Dev Patel is feeling an "overwhelming sense of gratitude" for receiving Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar nomination for Lion.

He is up against actors like Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) for the trophy, which will be given away at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony here on February 26.

The nominees were announced on Tuesday by actor Terrence Howard.

Dev said in a statement: "The news hasn't made its way into my brain yet, but I'm looking at these beautiful smiling faces around me... faces of the ones I love. And I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude."

Lion, based on Saroo Brierley's best-selling autobiography A Long Way Home, is a true story about an Indian boy who falls asleep on a train only to wake up and realise he is miles away from home in a strange land where he does not speak the language. He experiences many challenges before getting adopted by a couple in Australia. Years later, he sets out to find his lost family. What makes the moment so much more "poignant" is that he has just wrapped up shooting another film in India.

"This enthralling country holds such a deep place in my heart, and it is where Saroo's journey was born," said Dev.

He said Lion would be nothing without its director Garth Davis. "Without his love, commitment and vision Lion' wouldn't have been able to roar. To that extent I want to share this incredible feeling with Luke, Grieg, Jenny Kent, Lain, Angie, Emile, Sunny, Nicole, David, Rooney, Divian, Priyanka, the Brierley family as well as the Weinstein Co team," said the actor.

"Lion reaffirms the message that love is not dictated by the colour of your skin, not by race, gender, sexuality, social status or origin. It is a message I am proud to be spreading during these uncertain times."

"This will forever be one of the most memorable experiences of my life," he added.

The drama, which also stars Nicole Kidman, will release in India on February 24.

I saw the nominations in the evening & I was the happiest for him!! He's such a good actor (and got the hottest voice!!) seems so down-to-earth & likeable, and I saw that he's good even in SM when people were bashing him when they should've been bashing Freida!! I don't think he'll win because the hot favourite is the Moon light actor but just the nomination will give a boost to his career! Yaaay! So happy for him! ⭐️ 🥳

Awesome! I really loved him in Lion 👏 although I liked Mahershala in Moonlight more. Really hope he or Mahershala clinches it. But, I see it going to Jeff Bridges or Mahershala.

Please ANYONE but Mahershala Ali. His role was small and his performance was basic as hell. I was rooting for Hugh Grant but he was snubbed. Now i want Michael Shanon to win this.

And NO i don't want Dev Patel to win. If anyone is going to win an Oscar from SE Asia, its gonna be ME!!!! 😭

Dev Patel isn't winning, it'll be Moonlight actor . If Dev wins, Indian media will go crazy asking for Bharat Ratna for him 😆

I liked Shanon too but not as much. I'm surprised ATJ din't get nominated and that he won Golden Globes.

Interesting... I thought you'd wish for Kajol to win an Oscar before you do 😳#fakefanAFbruh😆

Are you kidding me? As if i would ever forget Kajol. I have it all figured out. When i get nominated i am taking Kajol as my date to the Oscars. And then when i am nice and famous i'll introduce her to the power players and help her break into Hollywood.

And before you say Ajay wont let me take her to the Oscars then i have that figured out to. Believe it or not but i can charm the hell out of people in real life and so i'll make Ajay my BFF. And i am sure Ajay bhai wont object to Kajol accompanying me to the Oscars.

This made me very happy cause I like Dev Patel. I'm not Indian but I loved the fact an South Asian actor was actaully acknowledged for once. It's quite annoying for everyone to be screaming about racism for black actors only. What about the talents of South Asians, Hispanics and Asians? All races should equally get the acknowledgement even in the Oscar's so white protest.

Also Aaron Taylor Johnson and Hugh Grant got snubbed big time. They should have at least been nominated if not won😵
