Today's question. This should be easy for history lovers

As per a very famous Sanskrit play, which important emperor of Indian history got his brother (the emperor then) killed and married his wife and took the throne, since the brother was incapable of protecting the empire as well as his wife

ChandraGupta, Devi chandraguptam is the name of the play

Chandragupta 2nd of Gupta dynasty by eliminating his brother Ramagupta took the throne because he was incapable of protecting empire and his wife from hunas invasion. This is mentioned in Devichandraguptam written by Vishakhadutta.

There are many Chandragupta in Indian history, you need to be more specific

Already answered correctly by @Moonks and @Abc775, I'll add more context.

This is from Devichandraguptam by Vishakhadeva/Vishakhadatta in which King Ramagupta is ready to surrender Queen Dhruvadevi to the Shakas to protect the empire. Prince Vikramaditya/ Chandragupta II, who is his younger brother, disguises as Queen Dhruvadevi, kills the enemy, dethrones King Ramagupta and then marries Queen Dhruvadevi, to keep her under his protection. The historicity of the play is disputed though, since the original text is long lost, and its surviving fragments are quotes in Natya-Darpana, Shringara-Prakasha and Sarasvati-kanthabharana. There is also a theory that Majmal-ut-Tawarikh, a Persian book which is an indirect translation of a Sanskrit text around the same era is based on Devichandraguptam.

Ok so as expected, this was answered correctly by most

It is Chandragupta 2 of Chandragupta Vikramaditya.

DeviChandraguptam is the play by Vishakhadutta which narrates Maharajidhiraj Ramagupta was the king and his wife was Devi. When during Saka invasion, he felt he is besieged, he gets ready to surrender his wife Dhurvadevi to enemies.

His younger brother Prince Vikramaditya then enters the enemy camp disguised as queen and kills the enemy. Ramagupta who loved his brother dearly actually asked him not to take this risk since he could have lost the queen but not his brother.

Either case he does and eventually kills the enemy saving the kingdom

At the end he dethrones Ramagupta and marries Dhurvadevi.

The historical accuracy of this play is highly doubtful since no independent source hints towards it.

While there are evidence of Ramagupta being a Maharajadhiraja as per inscriptions in Vidisha found in Gupta Brahmi. Also a few copper coins of his. But his exact timeframe in genology and how much his surrender to Sakas was true is something not very clear

However some later narrations do mention Chandragupta as brother killer.

The winners are Moonks, Abc775, Thorn. Princess

Congratulations 🎉 👏
