Acromeglia
What is it?
Acromeglia is a disease that causes abnormal bone growth.
What causes it?
Many people think that HGH (Human Growth Hormone) cannot cause Acromeglia, but it can speed up the progression of the disease in people predisposed to it. In fact, it is caused by overproduction of growth hormone by the anterior pituitary gland (due to a tumor).
What are the signs and symptoms?
Some of the signs and symptoms are:
- Coarse, oily, thickened skin
- extreme sweating and body odor
- Small outgrowths of skin tissue (skin tags)
- exhaustion and muscle weakness
- A deepened, husky voice due to enlarged vocal cords and sinuses
- Severe snoring due to obstruction of the upper airway
- Impaired vision
- Headaches
- A puffy tongue
- Pain and limited joint mobility
- Menstrual cycle irregularities in women
- puffed-up liver, heart, kidneys, spleen and other organs
- Increased chest size (barrel chest)
How to prevent it?
Although there is no certain way to prevent it, you can prevent Acromeglia by paying attention to the pituitary gland and make sure that no overproduction of it happens.
Treatment:
You can treat Acromeglia by having surgery. In the surgery, doctors can remove most pituitary tumors using a method called transsphenoidal surgery. In this procedure, your surgeon works through your nose to take out the pituitary tumor.
