I can't say that I understand what it feels to go through severe depression - severe enough to cope with it through medication as my mother does. But, I do understand how it feels to want to give up on everything you once loved, to just stop living for yourself or for others. I had a phase in my life during high school that I believe, everyone does at least once, where I couldn't imagine a future for myself.

All I saw was darkness ahead of me. I can't say that it was the support of friends and family that brought me out of it, but I can say that having family that suffers from it made it easier to cope. It wasn't a taboo topic (and it still isn't) in my family. It's considered very important and as soon as I even hinted at it to my mother one day, she acted on almost immediately. She dropped everything and forced me to go to the doctor who referred me to a psychologist.

Believing in yourself and telling yourself that you have your whole life ahead of you, and you have to fight for yourself, really does wonders. I'm glad I had managed to bring it up to my mother that day. If your family doesn't understand, I suggest you to take that step on your own. At the end of the day, you have to fight the battle yourself, your family can't do it for you.

This is a great Discussion and post which has been shared. Depression is something when a person becomes irritated through the daily activities or something which is being the cause for his or her frustration that might be his or her personal or professional reason. According to me its not any kind of disease which can be cured through any fundamental medical procedure This is the Basic Human characteristics which is totally cause by certain situations. It all depends on the person how to deal with the specific reason of depression. Sometimes the Normal depression can leads to extinct depression level then it can diminish and harm Normal Lifestyles.

AWESOME Thread... i feel when you feel depressed or sad for no reason you should try to distract yourself... i myself have felt that you just want to be left alone so best thing to avoid negative thoughts is distracting yourself... watch movies, read books and do yoga or any other exercise like running..all these things help me alone...believe me these things help a lot at least it does to me...

I have never confessed this anywhere till date that I have suffered from depression. It feels like a pain which cannot be reduced by any pain killer and a darkness which never ends. You feel like no one understands you. You feel like a total failure and struck in a rut. Sometimes family and friends worsen up the situation in life. You feel sucidical sometimes but still have a will to live.

But best way to fight depression is to understand that you need help. Life is tough for everyone and everyone has different battles. Sometimes counseling works and sometimes medicines but in the end you can help yourself. Do not suffer in silence like I did for last six years. Have guts to survive and fight depression.

CCs! You efforts need a lot of appreciation.👏 Personally, it is nice to have such a team on IF which actually works to create awareness. Lovely! 👍🏼

Now, being someone who has been through this phase for a very long time (approx. 2 years), I can say a lot. Firstly, your soul breaks into pieces from inside. You don't want people to come to you and talk to you but at the very same time you want that care, that love, that affection because you want to scream all those thoughts out of your head. Really, now if I think of that time, it was harder than anything I ever faced. But, I think while the person depressed can be helped easily but society, at times, becomes a hurdle than a help in this process. I still rememeber, people used to say to my mom - "You daughter needs to go to the mental asylum, please don't live with her, its harmful". I cannot believe that people have become so insensitive to what others feel. I think maybe we as humans are developing better technology while we need to develop better society first.

But, this period of life passes very slowly (it passes slowly at least for me!). Every other day, you her up with moist eyes, try to hide it from you family (I couldn't) and then cry again at night. I used to cry for hours at night. Really long hours. And at a point you reach that spot where you feel, that's it. I have had enough of this torture, I will put an end to it. But that is when family and friend come in. They are the one who actually give you emotional support to get out of the trauma.

And yes! Depression differs from person to person and that is because of the reasons it happens.

Lovely thread. 👏

Can I ask you something does your Mom had any hobby which she loved before depression? Try to bring that hobby in her life back. Instead of eating ice cream ask your Mom to do something which relaxes her immidiately like music or reading. It is a really good thing that you are standing by her during her depression. Just try not to feel her lonely at any time. Even seeing your face will stop her doing drastic. I have suffered from this pain for long time and now I try to help others regarding depression.
