All I saw was darkness ahead of me. I can't say that it was the support of friends and family that brought me out of it, but I can say that having family that suffers from it made it easier to cope. It wasn't a taboo topic (and it still isn't) in my family. It's considered very important and as soon as I even hinted at it to my mother one day, she acted on almost immediately. She dropped everything and forced me to go to the doctor who referred me to a psychologist.
Believing in yourself and telling yourself that you have your whole life ahead of you, and you have to fight for yourself, really does wonders. I'm glad I had managed to bring it up to my mother that day. If your family doesn't understand, I suggest you to take that step on your own. At the end of the day, you have to fight the battle yourself, your family can't do it for you.
