Type II Diabetes – A New Effective Way of Management

Humanity has witnessed an era of genesis, the stone ages, numerous civilizations of growth, destruction and prosperity but none more treacherous and full of vengeful debilitating conditions like the modern age. We are plagued with Cancer, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Chronic pain, Stress and numerous other emerging health conditions. Our sedentary lifestyles, eating habits and hereditary inheritance are surely not helping us all. In this blog we try to examine one of the most dreadful disorder.

Shocking Fact: 62.4 million in India alone are suffering from Type II Diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong (chronic) disease in which there are high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Diabetes is probably one of the most written and read diseases/disorders of all time.

In layman terms excess build-up of sugar in the blood leads to a condition called hyperglycemia. Diabetes is caused by a problem in the way your body makes or uses insulin. Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and later used for energy.

When you have type 2 diabetes, your fat, liver, and muscle cells do not respond correctly to insulin. This is called insulin resistance. As a result, blood sugar does not get into these cells to be stored for energy.

Type 2 diabetes usually occurs slowly over time. Most people with the disease are overweight when they are diagnosed. Increased fat makes it harder for your body to insulin the correct way.

Type 2 diabetes can also develop in people who are thin. This is more common in the elderly.

Family history and genes play a large role in type 2 diabetes. Low activity level, poor diet, and excess body weight around the waist increase your risk.

Symptoms

My great grandmother used to complain of numbness in feet/hands and blurred vision. In those days not many folks ever consulted a doctor. They attributed everything to old age. My mother is living with this condition for over 20 years now and now our educated and well-read minds attribute my grandmother's condition to having Diabetes and the legendary hereditary condition passing from one generation to the next. So far I have warded off this threat in my own style, which I will explain further down. The symptoms are slow to surface often taking years before people find out. Here are the symptoms :

• Slow healing of infections related to bladder, kidney and skin

• Fatigue

• Hunger

• Increased thirst

• Increase in Urination frequency

The first symptom may also be:

• Pain or numbness in the feet or hands

• Blurred Vision

• Erectile dysfunction

You should see your health care provider every 3 months. At these visits, you can expect your health care provider to:

• Check your blood pressure

• Check the skin and bones on your feet and legs

• Check to see if your feet are becoming numb

• Examine the back part of the eye with a special lighted instrument called an ophthalmoscope

The following tests will help you and your doctor monitor your diabetes and prevent problems:

• Have your blood pressure checked at least every year (blood pressure goals should be 130/80 mm/Hg or lower).

• Have your hemoglobin A1c test (HbA1c) every 6 months if your diabetes is well controlled; otherwise every 3 months.

• Have your cholesterol and triglyceride levels checked yearly (aim for LDL levels below 70-100 mg/dL).

Treatment

People with diabetes seem to be the most read of all people having ailments of any sort. They exactly know what condition they have, what dietary habits to follow, how much exercise to get and have defined their lifestyle. But only few people with this disease have realized they have more or less become Pill man or Pill woman for having swallowed scores of prescription medicines. The effect of the onset of chronic diseases is profound and modern medicine despite the many medicines does not have a cure or it comes with a bagful of side effects. We now examine some alternate and natural options which have for ages used in traditional medicinal preparation and have proven beneficial to many.

Alternate Approach using natural herbs

The goal of any diabetes treatment at first is to lower high blood glucose levels and also to lower excess weight. The long-term goals of treatment are to prevent problems from diabetes. There are more than one way to reach the same goal. The ancient and rich science of Ayurveda has in its reserve many natural healing herbs which have curative properties. Among them there are many which have helped people manage their diabetic conditions successfully. One does not have to regard this as a medicine but if there is hope for successfully managing a condition backed by centuries of cultures being benefitted by it, then it surely must be an option worth considering. Let us review some potent herbs which are very helpful for people with Diabetes.

Gymnema sylvestre

Gymnema is a woody climbing shrub native to India, Africa and Australia. It is one of the most well-known herbs with anti diabetic properties and also for controlling obesity. Gymnema contains substances that decrease the absorption of sugar from the intestine. Gymnema may also increase the amount of insulin in the body and increase the growth of cells in the pancreas, which is the place in the body where insulin is made.
