Cataract means any clouding or discoloration of the crystalline lens or its capsule causing visual impairment.
Introduction

The lens is present behind iris and pupil & is shaped like a bi-convex disc. It is transparent, avascular and covered in a capsule. Its main function is to focus light on retina as it passes through it. This enables to have a clear vision.

As we age beyond 45, the proteins in lens break down and we get opacity in lens.this is known as senile cataract. It results in blurred, foggy vision. There are many misconceptions about cataract. It is neither any film covering the lens nor it is any cancer. It does not cause permanent blindness or it is contagious.

It develops differently in different persons. Sometimes even both eyes have different progress of cataract in same person. Factors like diabetes and other diseases can accelerate cataract. It hinders our daily routine activities. So when person is unable to carry out them, cataract surgery is advised to have better vision.

In rare cases, congenital cataract is also seen, where opacity of lens is present at birth due to various reasons.it can be associated with nystagmus, strabismus, glaucoma, etc. This type of cataract require urgent surgical intervention to prevent complications.

In case of mild changes in lens, correction of vision with homoeopathic medication can stop progress of cataract as well as improve our vision.

Causes
In case of congenital cataract, it is due to hereditary factors, maternal infections(rubella) or malnutrition (vitamin D), chromosomal abnormalities like Down's syndrome, drugs like corticosteroids taken during pregnancy, etc.

Senile cataract is related to aging process that leads to breaking of protiens in lens. Along with that exposure to sunlight and UV rays for so many years enhances the progress.
Factors which hasten cataract process
Diabetes
Family history
Inflammatory eye diseases
Trauma or injury to eye
Medications like steroids
Prolonged exposure to sunlight
Smoking
Previous intra-ocular surgery
Radiation exposure
SYMPTOMS:
Clouding or discoloration of lens usually seen around age of 60 & above
Blurred foggy vission
halos, glares aroung light
Sensitivity to light
Impaired night vision
Diplopia- double vision
Fading or yellowing of colors, confusion in recognising colors
DIAGNOSIS:

It is done by thorough slit lamp eye examination. One can observe the clouding or discoloration of lens with simple eyes.
COMPLICATION:

Glaucoma in case of severe untreated cataract.

PREVENTION:
Avoidance of prolonged exposure to sunlight
Use sunglasses or spectacles that protect from UV radiation.
Correction of vision with proper glasses
Controlling risk factors for cataract
TREATMENT:
Correct eyeglasses according to vision
Sunglasses with UV protection
Proper light for daily routine work
Surgery
Phacoemulsification: This is the most common form of cataract removal in which clouded lens is dissolved with help of probe. In place of affected lens artificial lens is implanted. It is minimal invasive surgery and requires only 30 minutes.

Extracapsular cataract surgery: It is used mainly for very advanced cataracts where the lens is too dense to dissolve into fragments (phacoemulsify). In this case capsule is kept intact and affected lens is removed. In place of that artificial lens is placed.

Intracapsular cataract surgery: it is rarely used now and requires more incisions. In this whole lens along with capsule is removed. Artificial lens is placed in front of iris.

HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT FOR CATARACT
Homeopathy has very less role to play in treatment of cataract. It cannot prevent progression of cataract. In early mild changes, it can help to relieve difficulty in vision. Blurred, foggy vision or halos around light can be reduced with the help of homoeopathic medicines.

Constitutional homeopathic treatment can delay the formation of cataract in high risk patients. Diabetes, trauma, inflammatory diseases of eye can be relieved symptomatically with the help of homoeopathic medicines.

Homoeopathy has holistic approach towards patient which means treating patient as a whole and not his specific disease or parts of body. While selecting constitutional medicine of patient his physical, emotional and general factors are considered. These make our life force called work in harmonious way, and help us to improve our immune power .

Homoeopathy is based on law of similar-"similia similibus curentur" which means "like cures like"! Thus the medicine selected from symptom similarity of the patient gives wonderful results. As the symptoms of patient are individual, the medicine selected on it remains individual to his sickness.
Homoeopathic medicines work effectively on children as well as adult patients and can be taken safely during pregnancy by women. They are safe, gentle and effective to give relief in harmless way. Homoeopathic medicines are most palatable medicines and easy to administer.

Still patient should not do self-medication and take medicines after consulting a homoeopathic physician.
