Humor can help us in many ways, it can replace distressing emotions with pleasurable feelings, soften the meaning so that the event is not that powerful and reduce stress by facilitating a shift in perspective. Endorphins, the body's natural pain killers, are released during heartfelt laughter. IgA (an antibody), killer T-cells, and tolerance to pain are increased with laughter while cortisol (a hormone secreted when one is under stress) is decreased with laughter.

All in all a good sense of humor can improve psychological wellbeing: laughter allows the release of emotional tension, and humor can help people cope with depression and anxiety.
