Introduction & Types : The wrist is surrounded by a supporting band of fibrous tissue. The tight space between this fibrous band and the wrist bone is called the carpel tunnel, through which passes the median nerve which supplies the thumb, index and middle fingers of the hand. A swelling in this fibrous tissue irritates the median nerve, causing tingling and numbness of the thumb, index and middle fingers. This condition is known as 'carpal tunnel syndrome'.
Causes :
For most patients, the cause of their carpal tunnel syndrome is unknown.
Any condition that exerts pressure on the median nerve at the wrist can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Common conditions that can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome include
Obesity
Pregnancy
Hypothyroidism
Arthritis
Diabetes
Tendon inflammation resulting from repetitive work, such as uninterrupted typing, can also cause carpal tunnel symptoms
Signs & Symptoms (According to Vata ,Pitta,Kapha) :
Numbness and tingling sensation in one or both hands.
Frequently accompanied by sharp pains radiating through the arm or shoulder.•Muscle weakness of index and middle fingers and thumb.
Discomfort / aching in one or both hands.
Lack of feeling in hand may cause person to drop objects.
Activities requiring fine hand motor skills may prove difficult if not impossible.
Later symptoms include burning, cramping and weakness of the hand, and occasionally, wasting of the hand muscles.
Treatment : AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME
