Ghulaam on Life Ok has opened to a great response and a lot of credit should be given to the actors. Spearheading the cast is actor Param Singh . Young TV viewers know him as Randhir from the hit Channel V show, Sadda Haq.
The actor has put in a lot of efforts to get into the skin of Rangeela for Ghulaam and his efforts have been noticed. Bollywood Life chatted up with the actor about Ghulaam, Rangeela and his recent confession that Harshita Gaur and he are indeed dating in real life as well.
Talking about the favourable response to the show, he said, "Honestly, I was expecting it to do well. Even when we were shooting, I have positive about it. The show has been shot differently and looks fresh. So, I was sanguine about it doing well." Param who is only on Twitter and does not have a Facebook or Instagram page is a popular star online and compliments are pouring in for Rangeela. When we tell him this, he says, "Is it? My fans are sweet, I am blessed to have them. They do whatever I do onscreen." (Also Read: CONFIRMED! Param Singh and Harshita Gaur of Sadda Haq fame are a couple)
The young man who quotes Aamir Khan as an inspiration is fast gaining reputation as a method actor. His earlier show had him as a chauvinistic mechanical engineering genius driven by ambition and tormented by a broken home. Rangeela, on the other hand, is a tame lion laced with street-smartness and a bit of heart. Param says that getting into the character was easy but smoking a chillum wasn't. "It is not difficult. Slipping into a character has a lot to do with imagination. I did this acting workshop where the writers helped me understand Rangeela, his walk and talk. It is a joint effort. I made a sketch of him in mind. Yes, I did some action scenes, mastered the segway and smoked up a chillum, which was tough." The scene where he makes his entry smoking the chillum was a real hoot. "There was tobacco in it. I did not do drugs. But I am a non-smoker, so the tobacco was harsh on my throat. Smoking a chillum is no joke," he clarifies.
While Ghulaam is gaining appreciation for its performances and pace, the extreme violence shown towards women is quite revolting at times. At a time, when TV bahus are beating all kinds of supernatural powers, such atrocities are ghastly in a more real way. Sadda Haq was also rooted in reality and Ghulaam is also supposed to reflect certain parts of India where women are treated badly. Param says that doing real subjects is not a conscious decision. "What I look for is a good character. I should feel challenged as an actor. Ghulaam is not 100% real. We have taken cinematic liberties. We are trying to show something but in an exaggerated way," he says. When we said that the brutality against women has reminded some of Game of Thrones, he says he has not seen the international series and would not like to comment.
There was a lot of buzz that Niti Taylor was chosen for the show because of her tremendous social media following. TV stars have crazy following online and popularity is a factor whether it is a film or TV show. "I think this is bull-shit. If she is selected for her social media following it is very sad. If online fans made an actor hit or flop those with over one million followers would never go through a bad phase. It all depends on your product whether it will do good or not," he says. He further adds, "Social media can be used to publicise your show or product and at times, yourself. I don't understand the idea of buying followers or likes. If makers are casting on the basis of followers it is sad."
Param has only nice things to say about Niti. He says, "I treat her like a kid. She is very bubbly and fun-loving. I am more serious in the sense I prefer to stay in the character. We joke after the director says cut, at times. She is a nice gal. I saw certain episodes of Kaisi Yeh Yaariyaan and liked her work. People are liking our chemistry and that matters." The 28-year-old actor says that he had a blast shooting in Rajasthan and Delhi. He liked the cold weather there and enjoyed wearing the jackets and sporting the look. "I travelled a bit and ate a lot of food. The best part I don't have to build a physique for the show. They need a natural and real body. I can ate well with regular workout. I don't need to lose body fat," he says.
Recently, Param made fans of SanDhir very happy when he said that Harshita and he were close in real life. The two had been rumouredly dating since a long time now. Was the admission done to end the speculations? He says hesitantly, "We are close but I don't like to talk about it (our relationship). It was not a conscious decision to end rumours. What is there is for us. I don't think it matters to anyone about whom I date in my life. I feel my work and acting is more important. I do not want to comment on it." When we told him that SanDhir fans are over the moon with the news, he said, "I cannot comment. If they're happy, I don't know what to say." When he is off duty, Param's idea of chilling is to play with his dogs (he has three pugs), watch films, go for a drive, read books or workout in the gym. "I am a very normal guy," he signs off.
