psst - Nupur caught on the wrong foot!
Actor Nupur Alankar (Halki Bua) of 'Ghar Ki Laskhmi Betiyaan' (Zee) had a bad fall recently when she was shooting for the show. The fall injured her right foot causing her muscle to rup ture. Nupur says, "I tripped while getting down the stairs. My co-star caught me otherwise I would have had a fracture." Incidentally, Nupur has had a few falls earlier too. And they always seem to be injuring her right foot. "It's strange how I keep hurting the same foot," she remarks.

All set to make a comeback

Friday, April 13, 2007 12:51:29 IST

Dheeraj Kumar, whose serial Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan has emerged as the No 1 serial on Zee TV, is all smiles as he tells JYOTHI VENKATESH about his comeback as an actor with his new serial Hamari Bahu Tulsi.

Why did you opt for the title Hamari Bahu Tulsi?
In today's scenario where serials like Teen Bahuraniyaan,Betiya Apni Ya Paraya Dhan and Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan rule the rostrum, it helps if you have a serial with a title like Hamari Bahu Tulsi because it relates directly to the common man and addresses the problems of society.

Is it an attempt on your part to cash in on the popularity of the serial Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and the character of Tulsi?
Tulsi is a symbol of sacrifice. Tulsi in our serial brings happiness, wealth and goodness wherever she goes. We did extensive research on our scriptures and concluded that Tulsi has all the qualities which Goddess Tulsi had and hence opted for the title Hamari Bahu Tulsi.

Why did you cast Sadhika, who has been unsuccessful in films, for the title role in your serial?
Television today does not need stars. I was on the lookout for a new girl for the serial. I feel there is a dearth of talent, which combines beauty, brains and art. We conducted auditions across the country in far-flung places like Lucknow, Kanpur, Chandigarh, Delhi and Mumbai but were not able to stumble on any one who would fit the role. It was then, that I happened to watch her film, Sanam Harjai on a VCD. Though I was of the opinion that her performance in her debut film was immature, I decided to take her audition as well as the look test.

Why did you not zero down on a new face?
I liked Sadhika's dedication to come back with a banner to get a new lease of life as an actress. I was impressed by her zeal and enthusiasm to prove her credentials as a mature artiste. After she was signed , I learnt that she had left for Shirdi to thank god for the opportunity. It is rarity in today's times when a new girl tends to sit on your head within three months of signing on a serial.

You are staging a comeback as an actor with Hamari Bahu Tulsiā€¦
I play the character of a family friend Vishwas, who discovers the strange truth about Tulsi. Vishwas is a breezy NRI who instills a lot of confidence in Tulsi, who is fighting many odds and dealing with various unpleasant situations in her life. I will make my entry with the tenth episode of the serial and intend to be there for atleast eight episodes. If the audience accepts my character, I will think of continuing the role for a longer time.

Why did you let the actor in you lie dormant for such a long time?
Creatively speaking, the director in me superseded the actor. After playing the lead role in films like Raaton Ka Raja, Deedar, Behroopiya, Baharaon Phool Barsao and switching over to villainous roles in Darling Darling, Heera Panna etc and character roles in Roti Kapada Aur Makan, Kranti, Aatish, Swami etc, in 1986 I began producing shows for television. Up to 1993, I was not only a producer but also a director and actor in most of my serials like Kahan Gaye Woh Log, Adalat, Car Ke Karname, Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai etc. In fact, not many remember that I had done a comedy role too in Jaan Aafat Mein. After eight years of completing the entire sargam in terms of acting, directing and producing, I realized that it is the director who has the command over the media and hence decided to move away from acting.

Does it mean that you are bored of acting?
Acting is no longer the goal of my life. It used to be the solo aim at the beginning of my career a few decades ago. However I keep the actor in me alive by doing something worthwhile like this role. After Ghar Sansar, in which I had played the role of Rohini Hattangadi's younger brother, it is after five years that I will be facing the camera as an actor. I used to work for at least five days a month as an actor.

Why have you not directed any show for the last several years?
Since 2000, I have not directed any of my home productions. For ten years from 1986 to 1996, it was a combination of all three. When the new era of mythology began with Om Nama Shivaya, I started my role as a director, as I realized that I had more creative freedom as a director than as an actor. I also realized that being a combination of the three was not the right way for me to go ahead in my career and hence decided to take the responsibility of the most challenging aspect- direction. The goal was clear when we went public and had our company listed in 2000. It was of paramount importance for me to concentrate on the growth of the company and hence relieved myself from the responsibility of direction. .

What else is 'Creative Eye' involved in?
Over the years, I have realized that there is not much scope for growth, if we continue to be just a content provider. 'Creative Eye' creates content for not just television but also our advertising clients. As a media house, we also acquire films for Doordarshan and satellite channels like Star and Sahara. At present we do not have any plans of moving into film production. The last film produced by us was Abra Ka Dabra.

Your last show Jodi Kamaal Ki proved to be a disaster...
Though Jodi Kamal Ki was appreciated, it could not go on air for a longer time. It is my feeling that shows, which appear just once a week, tend to have lesser impact and in turn a shorter life span. Even if KBC, the most successful reality show is changed into a weekly , I am sure it will not be able to run for a long time, no matter who the host is.

What according to you is the future of television?
The future undoubtedly is IPTV and Mobile. Today content is the king. We are procuring films, TV content and aggregating the content to make it compatible for the future technology like IPTV, mobile services, broadband and others. We are game to buy high- end products. We are also a part of high profiled events like the Euro Asia Cricket series held last year in Abu Dhabi at the Zayed International Stadium for 14 days, where six nations-India, Pakistan, Srilanka, Ireland, Holland and UAE took part, thanks to the BCCI. It was telecast on Sahara One and Filmy besides DD Sports. Creative Eye is positive about creating a niche position in the media sector, and to be one of the top five players in the near future.

Thieves on the sets of 'Betiyaan'!

The unit of the show 'Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan' (Zee), which is generally used to creating drama on screen, witnessed the same on their sets last week. The cast was shooting for a wedding sequence with Romit Raj (Yuvraj) and Jasveer Kaur (Kajari) at Filmcity far away from their usual sets at Andheri.

Since it was not their usual location for shooting, things were not too well-organised. Some props were kept outside, which caught the eye of two thieves who tried to run away with them late one evening.

Aarif Sheikh, head of production reveals, "We were all present at the site. We were busy carrying out our respective jobs when we heard some chaos. We thought that probably a leopard had attacked someone. When we flashed lights in the direction of the chaos, we saw two men running away with a trunk and some light equipment." He continues, "Some unit members and I ran towards them. But they had escaped before we could lay our hands on them. They were trespassers and not from our unit. Though we couldn't catch them, we were lucky that they left our things behind. "

A unit member reveals that thefts are a common occurrence at Filmcity. "Our complaints are not taken seriously," he rues. He adds, "The trunk contained expensive costumes, worth approximately Rs 70,000, which were to be used for the wedding sequence. Had they be stolen, we would have to wait for new ones to be designed and re-shoot the entire wedding sequence to match the continuity."

A major fight took place between actors Nupur Alankar (Halki) and Tanushree Kaushal (Menka) last week on the sets of 'Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan' (Zee). A source reveals, "Tanushree felt offended when co-actor Jasveer Kaur (Kajari) declined to accommodate her in her make-up room. Nupur took this opportunity to taunt Tanushree as some weeks ago Nupur had felt the same humiliation when Tanushree had refused to accommodate her in her make-up room." The source adds, "Tanushree lost her patience and yelled 'Don't you say anything to me'. Nupur too got agitated and challenged Tanushree." The source continues, "To everybody's shock, Tanushree then hardpressed Nupur's jaws saying that she would shut the latter's mouth. A horrified Nupur bit Tanushree's hand. Tanushree returned the assault with a slap on Nupur's face. Nupur flew into a rage and broke the windows of Tanushree's car." Unfortunately, the splinters of the glass seriously wounded associate executive producer-cumscheduler Vivek Jain who was standing near the car. When contacted, Nupur admitted to the unpleasant incident and added, "I broke the car windows with an iron rod and I don't regret it. I have had enough of her attitude and it was high time I gave it back to her." Vivek revealed, "Nupur, Jasveer and Tanushree did have a fight and I don't want to hide it. They have fought several times before but this time it got very serious. Yes, the glass hurt me." When contacted Jasveer said, "My make-up room cannot accommodate two people. So I told Tanushree that she would not be comfortable there. She took offence to this." Tanushree was not available for comments.

Karela queen

Gimme more: Twinkle Bajpai

Recently, while shooting for the Zee show Betiyaan, Twinkle Bajpai and the rest of her reel family members were to sit together for dinner.

Twinkle, who plays Lakshmi in the show, was asked to offer veggies to her father-in-law.

Very fond of karela herself, she requested the director to actually keep real karele ki sabzi so that she could eat it too.

When the director refused, Twinkle refused to budge from her stance.

Eventually, the sabzi was called for and amidst sniggers from the unit members, the f-i-l was offered karele ki sabzi. Of course, Twinkle wasted no time in polishing off the fare after the shot was over!

Daru sharu hai rabba!

Kavita Shyam

Kshitee Jog aka Saraswati in Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan wouldn't do anything that goes against her ethics. Recently, when the actress was required to drink champagne for a crucial scene on the show, she put her foot down and refused to do it. Apparently, her parents didn't want her to sip champagne even for authenticity's sake. As a result, the production house was forced to buy apple juice and fill in a bottle of champagne. "When I told my family about this sequence they weren't too happy about it. When I tried to reason with them they threatened to disown me. My parents panicked as actors are often required to take re-takes when scenes are not shot to perfection," says Kshitee.

She informs that she drank two bottles of apple juice as many shots were taken. "I finished two bottles of the apple drink while canning the scenes. If it was a bottle of liquor, I would have had a tough time." Also, her parents insist that she is shown as an extremely goody-goody character on the show. That would only help her attract many prospective grooms. Yes, the 25-year-old actress' grandmother is trying hard to get her hitched.

"My grandmother visits various marriage bureaus in Pune. She keeps me posted about the profiles of prospective grooms. She wants me to do only positive roles on television so that people don't get judgmental about my habits," signs off Kshitee.

Sai to replace Shishir in Betiyaan

Tantrums and Bollywood are often synonymous and it is also not unusual that upcoming actors would be throwing tantrums from time to time to prove their star worth. After all what is a star without liberal does of peevishness!

But it really cones as a surprise (or say shock) to learn that even senior actors often resort to such cheap means, God knows for what. If you don't believe this, let us tell you about a recent incident in the industry. The buzz is that Shishir Sharma, who essayed the role of Saraswati (Kshitee Jog) and Laxmi's (Twinkle Bajpai) father-in-law Nekchand in the Zee daily Ghar Ki Laxmi - Betiyaan, was asked to leave the show due to 'unprofessional conduct'.

Sai Bilal is now essaying the role. According to a close source in the unit, "Shishirji would always make unreasonable demands. He would refuse to sit and wait for very long and also throw tantrums about the temperature on the sets and over other minor issues. It was difficult to bow to his demands all the time".

When we got in touch with Shishir Sharma to know his side of the story, he consciously tried hard to evade the topic of tantrums and chose to give other reasons instead.

"I actually left, as I did not like the role and the way it was progressing. Before I joined, they told me something else and what I was doing was something else. So, it was a mutual decision to part ways," he asserted.
Surprisingly, even director Rajan Shahi refused to confirm rumours regarding Sharma's tantrums. Instead, Shahi too seemed to toe the line adopted by Shishir!

When contacted, Shahi said, "Shishir left because he was not happy with the role. He had a different image about the character he played. Unfortunately, the role turned out to be different."

Seems that after being a part of the industry for all these years, they, like many others, have mastered the diplomacy game and are adept in playing it well. Hence, the effort to cover up the mess and sent it under the carpet, while blaming the fiasco on the so-called 'creative differences'. But then, where is there smoke without fire?

Meanwhile, our source revealed, "It's a relief for everyone after Shishirji left. Now everyone is breathing easy."
Also thankfully, Sai Bilal, who has replaced the actor, is happy with his role. "I am happy with the role currently and let's see how it progresses later. I had a chat with Shishir and he explained me the role."

Looks like, as of now there is no room for tantrums any more.

Ranjib Mazumder

Natsha
Now, this is what happens when someone tries to get real on screen. In a bid to give a power-packed performance for a scene, actor Kartik aka Bhavishya strangled his co-actress Natasha Rana aka Dharaben in Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan so badly that she was left gasping for breath.

Kartik plays a mentally-challenged person in the serial. He was supposed to throttle his mother in the scene. Initially, Kartik was reluctant to do so. The production people tried their best to convince him, but in vain. Then, Natasha came forward and convinced him that it was only a scene, and being a professional, he should do it.

Finally, Kartik agreed to do the scene. But in his enthusiasm, he throttled her so hard that the actress was left gasping breath. Recalls Natasha, "Poor Kartik was only doing his job. He got a little carried away and strangled me hard. I was screaming for help, but he thought I was acting my part. At one point, I thought I would die."

There were bruises on Natasha's neck and a doctor was called to the sets. The actress is still in pain and is on medication. Natasha adds, "Now, whenever there is a scene

Kshitee Jog aka Saraswati in Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan just won't buckle under any sort of pressure. She's very firm about certain things and will stick to it, come what may.

Recently, the actress was required to drink champagne for a particular scene and though the creative team tried to insist she drink it, so that the shot looks natural, she put her foot down and refused. So the producers had no choice but to fill apple juice in a champagne bottle.

Apparently her parents had told her very strictly when she started acting never to succumb to such requests. Their fear is there will be several retakes for a shot, and that means their darling daughter will have to drink several times!
