Till now it was the evil mother-in-law, a jealous daughter or a scheming brother/sister-in-law hailing from rich households who made life miserable for the sweet, simple heroine in most soaps. Joining this evil gang is the bua. (paternal aunt). In many of the recent serials — Solaah Singaar, Zaara, Paraya Dhan, Betiyaan, Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye and Kulvaadhu — the new villains are the buas.

Says Sandeep Sikand, creative chief head of Sony TV, "The focus is on characters who can lure viewers. The wicked saas is always famous. To give a twist in our new show, Kulvadhu, the character of the bua is negative. At first it was the maussi (maternal aunt), but later we felt the bua would be a more influential negative character."

Anirudh Pathak, the script writer for Kulvadhu, has his own take. "Fiction is born from the cradle of fact. As a writer, I try to base my characters on real life. In Kulvadhu too you can say that about the character of a bua. In my research I found many instances wherein buas are responsible for family feuds. Hence the thought arose. I must admit though the writer alone cannot take this decision. He has to consult the creative head of the channel, the producer of the show and the director. Finally, it's a joint decision."

While Pathak is adamant about his research and blames buas for family miseries, Dheeraj Kumar, creator of another anti-bua show, Betiyaan that airs on Zee TV, has a different stand on this. "Oh please! Buas are not the source of evil in society. In television, someone has to be bad. So this time it's the bua. I had a very fruitful relationship with my aunt. In Betiyaan too we have two buas who are not hardcore villains. They are eccentric. Finally, it's all about the TRPs. If the audience likes a character then the show is a hit, otherwise the network chops it. Currently, the bad buas seem to be a hit."

Shushmita Mukherji, who essays the character of a negative bua in Kulvadhu says, "It's sad that in our industry we idolize some and demoralize the others. When we bring some character to life, like say of a bua, we ignore the social implication it would have on millions of viewers." So it's up to the audience to treat it as a serial and not take it to heart. Because as long as the TRPs rise, the buas will have to remain bad. (Sampurn)

Well, Romit Raj, the wicked Yuvraj of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann was asked just that when he visited a temple recently. Romit visits one particular temple rather frequently but of late his timings are weird because of his hectic shooting schedules. Apparently an old man came up to him and asked why he visited the temple at such odd hours.

And when Romit explained his busy schedule and yet never missed going to the temple for a darshan, the old man replied in a state of shock, "It's strange that a bad, mean character like you comes to the temple too." Romit wasn't offended though. "According to me, this was the best compliment for my acting ability," he said. "The old man didn't even realise that I am just an actor and not the character that I play." (Sampurn)

Look who's complimenting Romit

Ever since he can remember, Romit Raj has been fond of movies and acting. Growing up watching all Amitabh Bachchan movies, this dude from Kolkata has always adored Rohini Hatangdi, especially in the movie Agnipath in which she played Big B's mother. And now, he thanks his stars for giving him an opportunity to work with her in their show Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, in which he plays the role of bad boy Yuvraaj. But is the feeling mutual? Says Rohini, "This is the first time I am acting with Romit, but it's just great working with him. He is a very hard working boy and gives a lot of respect to everyone on the sets, even someone younger to him." Now just don't let that compliment go to your head Romit!

Betiyaan go to their Maayka

Back to Section Stories

Ranjib Mazumder

A still from Maayka
The set of Maayka witnessed the most unusual event on the first day of their shoot. The entire unit of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan visited the unit of Maayka, to wish them luck.

Both the serials have common directors, Romesh and Rajan Shahi. Rajan Shahi, the series director said, "I am the series director and Romesh is the episode director of Betiyaan. On the first day, I was shooting with the Betiyaan team who were shooting next to the Maayka crew. So, I went to the sets of Maayka to watch the shoot. But, I was so surprised when the entire team of Betiyaan came to Maayka's sets to wish them. I am really touched by their gesture"

It was a wedding sequence and the unit of Betiyaan beautifully fit in the crowd for the wedding. Talking about the warmth between the actors, Rajan says, "There are a lot of positive vibes on the sets of Betiyaan. The Betiyaan team gets along well. I hope, Maayaka team also turns out to be the same as Betiyaan. There is also a lot of similarity between the two sets as well; except one has a Punjabi look (Maayka) while the other one is Gujarati (Betiyaan).

Romit's spooky experience

Romit Raj aka Yuvraj of Zee TV's Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, had one hell of a time shooting for Star Plus' Sssshhh Phir Koi Hai, especially because the guy himself is scared of ghosts. he says, "I have always been scared of ghosts but they convinced me that it would be alright and for some reason they felt I was apt for the role. So finally I thought of giving it a shot. And it was actually fun except it being a little spooky during shooting at those locations." Thankfully the actor didn't have any ghostly encounters.

Romit is losing out on wisdom

News is that the bad boy on television Romit Raj aka Yuvraj of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, is all set to pack up and leave for Kolkata. Don't worry, he is not leaving the industry so soon. Sources have told us that this trip is just to visit his dentist. Interestingly he is going there to get his wisdom tooth removed. Romit apparently is very scared of dentists and does not visit any dentist other than his dentist back home. "I will only lose my wisdom tooth, not my wisdom for sure," he says.

'To Lust is Human!'

I think that would be my sense of humour. Many people have told me I'm quite funny and my humour always amuses them.

On your sex appeal
I think that would be my sense of humour. Many people have told me I'm quite funny and my humour always amuses them.

How girls react to you
Every girl reacts to me in a different way. On a general basis, they are sweet to me, but at the same time some can be wicked, cunning, charming or over smart.

Your first date
It was in school when I was in grade six. I had taken her for an ice cream. It was a nice experience. And I was slightly nervous also.

Your first crush
It was on my school teacher. I know it sounds very clichd but that's the truth. She was
my history teacher. Thanks to her, history became an interesting subject for me but now she
is history (laughs). I have no clue where she is.

Your most cherished compliment
It was recently when my colleague told me, "Romit, when my son grows up I would like him to be just like you."
I was very touched when he told me that.

Your wildest compliment
It was when my good friend's cousin told me, 'Romit, I feel like slapping you after seeing you on television. I just love to hate Yuvraj. That's the character I play in my show.

Love & romance...
I am very romantic by heart. But I would want to know what is the definition of love. It's kind of weird that you may love someone but that person loves somebody else. So there is nothing you can expect when you are in love. And if you do find love and a partner then one can consider himself lucky and blessed.

Lust...
Lust is very human but it differs from person to person. I think the lesser its thought about is better for all. It can prove to be a weakness for one as well.

On a nudist beach
I would make the most of the day.

What if a girl made a pass at you?
I think I would only blush and feel shy. Maybe, I'd also compliment her in return.

Would you ask a girl out if you liked her but didn't know her well?
Yes, definitely. I would then try to make an effort in getting to know her better.
But I see no harm in asking someone out, even if it's someone I don't know too well, if I like her.

What if you fell short of money on a date?
I would order within the budget. And not make it too extravagant. It actually happened to me on my first date. But in case I do order and realize that I don't have enough cash on me, then I would very sweetly ask her to pay the bill (laughs).

Your dream date
It would be Kate Winslet in Paris. I think that's the most romantic place on Earth. It has to be Paris and nowhere else for me.
Would you dress to impress a girl?
Yes, I can dress to kill a girl. I think it's important for one to look good to impress someone. It speaks a lot about the person. And there's no harm in attracting someone you like by just dressing up a little more. I think it makes the other person feel special as well.

Flirtations...
Flirting is good fun. It's an easy way of becoming good friends. Flirtations, if from both sides, is even better because you get closer to the person as well as see the witty side of the other person.

Marriage...
It's a must. According to me, everyone should marry the person they love. And the important thing to keep in mind is that marriage completes a person. Nobody is perfect and one should accept the other person as he or she is. I consider marriage very sacred. No matter what it has to last.
People are capable of sorting out their differences.

What if your girl caught you with your pants down?
I don't think such a situation would ever arise. I will be very loyal to the person I am committed to.
Your wildest bedroom fantasy It would be to have mirrors all around my bedroom.

Are women a necessary evil?
Yes, I think they can manipulate you with their fingers in spite of knowing that you need to have them in your life.

Vineet Raina

Though the couple had kept their relationship underwraps,of late, they have been spotted together at various places.

When contacted, Vineet admits Tanushree is an integral part of his life but doesn't like to talk about it much.

Tanushree Kaushal

Serious rishtaa

However, Tanushree candidly admits her relationship with Vineet, "Yes, Vineet and I are in love. But please don't call it an affair. We are in a serious relationship. We meet every day.

We are almost like husband and wife."A source informs that Vineet often comes to the Betiyaann set. Tanushree admits, "We spend a lot of time together — on and off the sets.

We make it a point to have at least one meal together. He is a very caring and down-to-earth guy and I love him very much. We share all our problems and day-to-day happenings in our lives."So is the couple ready to exchange wedding vows?

"Of course, but let's concentrate on our work for now. I want our careers to be stable before we tie the knot. Our families know about our relationship and have no problems whatsoever," concludes Tanushree.
