High five!

The young actor has been offered a five-film package by producer Harish Shah.

Ram Kamal Mukherjee

Bollywood calling: Romit Raaj

Young actor Romit Raaj who is currently busy playing one of the male leads in Ze TV's Ghar Ki Lakshmi-Betiyann is all set to return to the big screen. The actor, who who made his debut as romantic hero in Hum Dum and later acted in Goutam Ghosh's yet-to-be-released film Yatra as Nana Patekar's son, has received a five-film offer package from producer Harish Shah (the producer who made Jaal with Sunny Deol and Tabu).

When contacted, Romit confirmed the news. He said, "It's true that Harishji has offered me a five-film contract, but it's too early to talk about the projects. Harishji is working on the script of his first film, and will soon be ready with his subject."

After working in Yatra, Romit was extremely hopeful about his career in films, but ended up doing television instead. "I waited for a year and then took up television. I was getting offers, but I wanted to try my hands at television for a while. I think my character Yuvraj in Betiyaan is very interesting, because of its negative shades," he says.

Romit is not signing any new assignment on television. "I always wanted to be a film actor, but after waiting for a year, when I did not get any meaty offer, my dad asked me to try television. I think I have been lucky to bag a good project with Harishji," he says.

Romit is waiting for the release of Yatra. The film got delayed after Rekha had some problem with director Gautam Ghosh. Finally, the film is complete, and producer Bipin Vora is planning to release the film early next year. "I am glad that I could share screen-space with actors like Nana Patekar and Deepti Naval. I have learnt a lot from them," he says.

Darna mana hai

Kshitee Jog of Ghar Ki Lakshmi-Betiyaan ran scared of shooting a scene on domestic violence, and just couldn't get it right.

Ranjib Mazumder

Gol maar: Kshitee Jog

The shooting of Ghar Ki Lakshmi-Betiyaan was stalled recently thanks to Kshitee Jog, who plays Saraswati in the serial. Even after several retakes, Kshitee could not get a domestic violence scene right and the director decided to stop shooting for an hour. An unhappy Kshitee started crying on the sets.

Says Kshitee, "Actually, the scene was a violent one, where my husband throws alcohol on my face. Initially, I refused to do the scene. But later on, I realised my responsibility as an artiste and finished the shoot. Thankfully, all the crew members were very supportive. It's very disheartening to know that domestic violence still prevails in our country. Moreover, being the only child in my family, I have always been pampered a lot. I just could not relate to my character in the show."

Kshitee adds, "I was a little unhappy with the way I was being treated on screen. In fact, the whole unit was upset while doing the scene. My co-star Kartik Sabarwal, aka Bhabishya who was bashing me up, kept apologising after every single shot. But, I could not get my expressions right and requested them to stop the shooting. I got so upset that I started weeping."

Home away...

Sid Makkar aka Satyakam of Betiyaan lives on the sets, literally!

Back to Section Stories

Ranjib Mazumder

Home sweet home: Sid Makkar
Sid Makkar aka Satyakam has found a new home on the sets of Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan. Since the actor gets a little time to go home and rest, he has decided to shift his base at the shooting venue instead.

Sid says, "We are shooting day and night at the Filmcity Studio for the last couple of weeks. Usually, I start shooting at around 1 am and finish around 7 am. Then, again I have to shoot in the afternoon. I stay near Malabar Hills and it takes at least one-and-a-half hour to reach home and exactly the same time to come back on the sets. I can barely sleep for two hours. It was taking a toll on my health. The best option for me was to stay back on the sets and get my sleep. The make-up room has become my second home now. I am happy since I don't need to bother about the traffic any more"

The actor now carries an extra bag to the sets. "I carry a bag which has my extra pair of clothes, brush, body wash and the entire daily utility stuff," says Sid.

The actor further adds, "Obviously, I won't get the comforts of my home on the sets. Every morning, one crew member or the other creates a ruckus, awakening me from my sleep. Moreover, there are jumbo mosquitoes hovering all around. So, I make sure to keep mosquito repellents in the room."

Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan… Changing tracks?.

It's going good for Zee TV once again. The channel has managed to rope in audiences with Saat Phere and Kasamh Se which have proved to be a real competition for the rival channels. Now, it's the turn of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, which was launched with a lot of fanfare to counter Star's Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki in the 10 pm slot. A few months back the show invited a lot of flak for its regressive representation of women but now it seems to be getting on the right track. Now, its back in news once more.

Hold…no rushing to conclusions. The serial recently created a history of sorts when the shaadi sequence between Bhavishya (Kartik) and Saraswati (Kshitee Jog) was shot in a way that it appeared a real shaadi to other unit members. Comments Rajan Shahi, the series director of Betiyaan, "I felt more like the father of the bride than a director while shooting the sequence. I mean so detailed and authentic was the whole set-up that it seemed like a real shaadi. We shot all the 40 ceremonies that are associated with the traditional Gujarati marriage. I had to take three days rest to get back to work, as I was completely drained by the opulent affair."

The storyline of the show will witness a fresh turn of events with the marriage of the eldest daughter Sarswati (Kshitee Jog) to Bavishya (Kartik) turning out to be a huge fiasco. Bavishya locks Sarswati in a hotel room on their honeymoon trip and henceforth his character would turn oppressive. Saraswati on the other hand chances upon her former admirer and she finds a new support in him. Lakshmi (Twinkle Bajpai), the youngest of the four daughters will continue to fight for her elder sister as she does for her mother. But, somehow over a period of time she will also be more subdued and less of her rebellious self, as she has fallen in love. So, a lot of drama expected in the coming weeks on the show.

For all those uninitiated, the story is about the Garodia family who are blessed with three girls and wish a son's birth. Destiny blesses the family with a fourth baby girl and the family head Suryakant Garodia gets married for a second time to find a male heir for the family and is finaly blessed with a son. Now, with a new wife and an old family a lot of drama gets generated in the show.

Rajan Shahi has directed popular serials like Jassi Jaise Koi Nahin, Millee, Kareena Kareena and Viraast to name a few. His forte has been the female centric themes that have become a niche genre post Jassi's popularity.
Commenting on the overall treatment of the show which critics typecast as stereotypical, "I don't agree with these statements. We are not rooted in the stereotype but in reality. The story of Betiyaan does echo in many households. Women continue to be the fairer sex whereas men are supposed to carry forward the progeny. We are holding a mirror to that reality and if in doing so we are labeled as regressive, it's awfully ridiculous. Finally, in the show all the female leads will rise above their oppressive circumstances" says the experienced director.

Rightly said Mr. Rajan, we have little to disagree with you on this.

Rahil Azam does a Dilip Kumar Act!

After Resham Dankh, Rahil has replaced Mannish Goyal in the role of Vedant in Betiyaan Apna Ya Paraya Dhan which is a tapori character. A little birdie from the sets told us that the unit is very happy with Rahil replacing Mannish and recently a sequence has been shot wherein Rahil will mime Shahrukh Khan, Dilip Kumar and Sanjay Dutt.

The said sequence unfurls when Rahil enters a hospital to take his mother's report and is intimidated by the live cameras. We already know Rahil's admiration for the veteran actor Dilip Kumar and he makes it a point to wish the actor every year on his birthday. If you can't get to work with the stars, at least you can act like them. What say Rahil?

This bahu knows her mind!

RESHMA S KULKARNI

Apowerhouse of talent! That is what best describes Kshitee Jog, the actor who is garnering rave reviews for her heart-wrenching portrayal of a traditionbound bahu in Ghar Ki Lakshmi... Betiyaan. But Kshitee's intense performance hardly comes as a surprise if one goes through the lineage she comes from. Hailing from a family of actors, with late veteran film actor Shanta Jog as a grandmother and noted theatre artistes Ujjwala and Anant Jog as parents, acting was bound to be in Kshitee's genes. "It began with me participating in intercollegiate theatre competitions while at college, where I acted and even directed quite a few plays and also won awards for the same. During one such play, I was spotted by someone from the Adhikari Brothers' fold and was offered the lead role in their post-leap Marathi serial Damini, which was already a mega-hit, having been on air for more than two years. It was a challenge to fit into such a huge role at the debut stage itself but thankfully, I could manage it and then one thing led to the other. Then I did serials like Vaadalvat, Marathi plays like Blackgame and All the Best, Ultimate and did two plays with Alyque Padamsee's group. I did a small role in Tumhari Disha. The makers of Betiyann liked me in this role and offered me the role of Saraswati and that's how I'm here," she says.
Being a modern, educated girl of today's times, how easy or difficult was it for Kshitee to mould herself into the traditional character of Saraswati? "I approached it as yet another role; but there are times when Kshitee's mindset clashes with Saraswati's. That's when I start questioning certain things and even shudder to think that I am playing a character that may actually exist in some parts of the country even today. In fact, when people ask me why I agreed to be a part of such a seemingly regressive storyline, I tell them that far from being regressive, it is stark reality that we are showing on screen. And I know for a fact that the women who admonish me for submitting to my on-screen husband's whims, are actually facing the same thing in their house" emphasises Kshitee.
Talking about her future plans, the girl says that she'd love to do soaps but only those characters that have a soul. But her heart lies in theatre. "Theatre is my lifeblood and I'd love to do something challenging in English or Marathi theatre soon. In fact, I'm keen on directing something in the near future." However Bollywood holds no attraction for the girl, despite her father being actively involved in the same. "If you are hinting at whether my father's presence makes it easy to get film-offers, let me tell you, it does not. In this industry, everybody is related to each other in someway. Even Abhishek Bachchan had to prove himself through his performance, I'm a small fry, isn't it? And, as it is, Bollywood hardly enamours me—I'd love to work in film but I'm certainly not going to lose sleep over it!"

STAR Parivaar's Resolutions

This is the week of the year where everybody is set to review their new year plans and resolutions. We found out about what some of your young favourite stars from the beloved STAR Parivaar are planning and doing for the grand eve.

Pulkit Samraat (Lakshya- Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi)
The best way to celebrate any occasion is to be with family and friends, so for the New Year I will go to Dubai and celebrate with my parents and shop a lot.

Resolution: I will try to get rid of my back problem and will try to stop others from complaining to me about others and about me to others. But I also believe that resolutions are meant to be broken, so would try to do these by actually keeping the resolution part aside.

Naman Shaw (Nakul- Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi)
Well if I don't go to Goa (which is likely) I will go to Kolkata (my hometown) and celebrate my new year with my family.

Resolution: I have promised myself that I will start going to the gym regularly.

Suhasi Garodia (Urmi- Aek Chabhi Hai Padoss Mein)
I will most probably travel to Pune and celebrate my new year with my friends there.

Resolution: I will definitely work harder and give a lot of interviews (Laughs).

Arjun Punj and Gurdip Kohli (Celebrity Couple, Nach Baliye 2 participants)
We would prefer not to travel as off late we have been travelling a lot. So as of now we will celebrate the time with a couple of our friends.

Resolution: Since we have recently got married and things are going fine as of now, we would try and lead a good married life.

Parakh Madan (Suman in Saathi Re)
For the New Year I am going home (which is Delhi), and will spend the evening with Family and Friends.

Resolution: I always make short-term achievable goals so that I can move on to the next goal once the first is accomplished so I will take life as it comes to me.

Gautam Rode (Parth- Betiyaan Apni Ya Paraya Dhan and Lucky)
For the new year I will go out of Mumbai with my family and a couple of friends (have not decided where will I go).

Resolution: In the New Year I would love to learn different forms of dancing.

Gauri Nigudkar (Krishna- Betiyaan Apni ya Paraya Dhan)
For the New Year I will spend the time with my friends and family in Mumbai itself.

Resolution: I will regularly do yoga in the New Year and would try to improve my work.

Sanjit Bedi (Mahesh- Kasautii Zindagi Kay/ Mohit Kapadia- Kumkum)
My New Year plans were big, tickets were booked and we were all set to go to Maldives, but sometimes you have to support your production house since that's where you earn you bread and butter from. So now I am working till 30th afternoon, we have taken off till 1st, so I will be with a couple of close friends and family and back to work again.

Resolution: Actually there are many, but the most important ones are I will give up smoking, I smoke like 50- 60 cigarettes a day and it feels bad when kids look up to you. And secondly I will be more focused towards my work and be a better performer.

    Twinkle out of sync
    By: Tushar Joshi
    January 5, 2007

She plays the lead role of Lakshmi on Zee's Ghar ki Lakshmi: Betiyann. Earlier, Twinkle Bajpai was seen on Challenge 2005 as one of the finalists.

Recently, the channel invited her for a special episode of Antakshari with other leading actresses like Bani (Prachi Desai) of Kasamh Se, Saloni (Rajshri Thakur) of Saat Phere and Vidya (Divyanka) of Dulhann.

It is learnt that Twinkle turned down the offer as she didn't want to share the stage with her one-time rival, Himani, who is hosting the show.

A source from the channel reveals, "Twinkle developed cold feet when she realised Himani was hosting the episode. Initially, she seemed to be excited with the idea of competing against other actresses, but she later backed out."

Apparently, Twinkle was unhappy with the fact that she wasn't hosting the show. "During Challenge, both Himani and Twinkle were competitors and didn't get along well. The fact that Twinkle had to share the stage with her didn't go down too well with Twinkle."

    Lost interest

Now an in-house production, Antakshari was initially produced by Gajendra Singh who has now moved on to Star One. It is reported that Twinkle had even approached Singh to show her interest in hosting the show.

We spoke to Bajpai who was in Jodhpur, "Yes I wanted to host Antakshari. I wouldn't deny it. But I lost interest after Gajendra Singh left the show. I would have loved to work with him."

When asked about her refusal to be a part of the special episode, she says, "I am shooting for Betiyann day in and out. There was no way I could devote time for the shoot. In fact, the channel too supported me in this decision."

When asked if she gets any free time, she says, "I hardly manage to get any time on my own. Work keeps me busy all the while. But I do manage to chill out whenever possible."

    Loss of the Rings

Twinkle Bajpai seems to have made a habit of losing diamonds.

    Twinkle Bajpai

Twinkle Bajpai aka Lakshmi of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan has lost three precious rings on the sets. The sentimental value attached to the rings far surpasses their material value. "One was a platinum ring studded with big diamonds. It was a gift from a very good friend. The second gold and diamond ring was a token of appreciation for winning a competition. I miss it every moment. I lost another gold ring on the sets a few weeks back," she adds.

Says a heartbroken Twinkle, "We usually shoot at our studio. But, there was a crucial scene on the terrace and it was the centre of terrific chaos. When I finished the shoot, I removed two rings and kept it in the makeup room. I changed and left the set. But, in a few minutes I realised that I wasn't wearing them. I rushed back and discovered that both were missing. I searched and searched in vain.

"It was my fault, so I can't blame anyone. That's why I am not lodging a police complaint as it will create a big hullabaloo," she quips.

Everyone should have such 'good friends' who gift large diamond rings at whim!
