i just watched it..omgggg 👏
My review of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na...
I loved it!😃 No two ways about that! Even though its a decade since I left my college and friends behind, watching JTYJN brought back every wonderful memory of those days rushing by! And I reckon a lot of people who saw the movie along with me were feeling the same!
And that is where the film succeeds! It brings a host of characters who look, talk and behave exactly like you and me and people in real life would! Its a long, long time since a movie came out which made viewers relate to it so wonderfully!👏
The story is simple enough, but has been rendered with a lot of humor, heart and effortlessness! There are no unnecessary frills or even an attempt to offer something that is not there...simple story, simply told!
Characters :
Jai Singh Rathore : One just ends up falling in love with Jai by the time the credit rolls! He is cute, humorous, unspoilt and just so normal! No muscle flexing, no wannabe macho stubble on the face, no sprouting silly dialogues…just plain out boy next door! And amongst all the characters, his is the one which literally grows alongside the film!😊
Aditi Mahant : Hers is the "main" character per say…the one with the mass-appeal! And even though there were moments, I felt that Aditi was too much of a brat, at the same time it was very amusing to see a domineering, attitude-throwing and foul-mouthed "hindi film heroine" for a change!😎
Rotlu, Bombs, Jiggy and Shaleen : Really bad singers, but really good friends! You end up liking them as much as Rats and Meow love them!
Jai's Mother : So cool to see a screen mom actually reading Naomi Woolf, dressed in track pants and t-shirt at home, lying casually on the couch, instead of donning a white sari and sitting by a sewing machine, doing clothes to feed herself and her son! And even more refreshing to see an un-karan johar type mom, dressed in chiffons and pearls and instead watching a single mother working and supporting her house, being a pal to her son, turning ferocious when need be and giving a shoulder to her son when his heart is broken! Definitely one of my favorite characters from the movie!
Aditi's Parent: Uber cool, scrabble playing, party hopping, trendily dressed and totally chilled out! Yet, perspective, sensitive, understanding and supportive towards both their children, the rather hilariously dysfunctional son and the firecracker daughter!
Aditi's brother : The best onscreen "Bhaiyya" till date! His one-liners coupled with the droll look had me cracking every time he came! Pity, it was a small role, but one that will be remembered in a movie filled with excellent characterizations! (Also the way he keeps calling Jai, "garib and badsoorat" was extremely funny😆)
Jai's girlfriend and Aditi's fianc : Even though I found Sushant's boorish and arrogant character to be a bit clichd, Meghna as Jai's dreamy girlfriend was a welcome change! The manner in which she deals with her broken family and her last scene with Aditi made the character likeable and just very nice!
Bhaloo, Bageera, Inspector Waghmare and Amar Singh Rathore : Lolz…they were a riot! Especially the talking portrait of Amar Singh Rathore, Jai's father! Dunno if the director has taken inspiration from the Harry Potter series, but whatever, the interactions between Savitri and Amar Singh were uproarious!
The Actors :
Imran Khan : This has to be one of the best debuts in ages! And simply because, Imran dared to play such a subdued, shy and reticent character! He is very natural and there is a sheer effortlessness in the manner he acts…maybe one of the reasons could be, cause he is playing a character who is just like him in real life! But whatever the reasons be, he turns out a performance that is worthy of an encore! In the looks department, I found him cute but unconventional! Not sure how big a star he will become in the future, but surely, the industry has discovered a sensible, solid actor in him!
Genelia : If not for this girl, many would perhaps have ended up just being plain irritated with Aditi Mahant! Every time you wonder why Aditi is getting so worked up, Genelia flashes her 1000 MW smile, one that end up coming on your face too! Though definitely not the best in the movie, it is a very impressive and strong performance and probably might end up being as popular as Kareena's Geet in Jab We Met!
Karan, Nirev, Sugandha and Alisha : The standout actor was definitely Sugandha and Nirev as Shaleen and Jiggy! Sugandha especially is endearing with her pitch perfect performance and amazing screen presence! Also, the manner in which Jiggy says, "Susaant" was so funny!😆
Ratna Pathak and Naseerudin Shah : They pulled the house down and when the movie ends, one of the reasons why you might go grinning back home is because of these two! 😃
Arbaab and Sohail Khan : Lolz, these two were so loony, dressed in cowboy gear, riding horses in Mumbai! 😆The scene in the disc where they interact with Jai and Meghna was one of the funniest in the movie!
Pratiek Babbar : This fellow is a chip of the old block! He plays the most atypical character in the movie and carries it out with such lan! His scenes with Jai were the best and the one in which he speaks to Aditi regarding her marriage was one of the highlights of the movie for me! Deffo an actor to watch out for!👏
Manjari Phadnis and Ayaz Khan : Ayaz was quite good (in looks and acting both) but Manjari carried out a comparatively complex character with charm and ease! She was very good in the movie, especially in her last scene where she meets up with Aditi, drunk and heartbroken!
Best Scenes from the Movie :
All the ones featuring Savitri's interactions with her dead husband's portrait! Undoubtedly the funniest bits of the film come from these two actors!
Aditi's parent's proposal of marriage to Jai and his subsequent reaction to it! Imran was a genius in this scene, especially when he asks in a bewildered way to Aditi if she wants to marry him!
Bhaloo and Bageera's entry and their atrocious dancing skills! Plus, really, where did they get those hideous cowboy dresses from?
The scene in the Car where Jai insists on dropping Meghna to her doorsteps and Aditi's subsequent jealousy and irritation! Genelia was excellent in the scene!
Amit and Aditi's conversation. There are two scenes in which Amit speaks to his sister, one in which he reminds her how they ceased being buddies and one in which he tells her that both Jai and she are in love with one another! Pratiek was fabulous in both the scenes and made you realize Amit's sense of alienation and despite it, his emotional attachment to Aditi.
On being asked by Sushant, if Aditi and he were best friends in College, Jai looks straight into Aditi's eyes and says in a heartfelt way, "Hum ab bhi dost hain aur hamesha rahenge..." and the smile Aditi gives Jai was so awww...😳
Jai's reaction on watching Sushant kiss Aditi in the party! This scene itself deserves a 10 on 10 for Imran! It was so understated yet deeply felt…the stunned manner in which he keeps watching Aditi being kissed was heartbreaking…
Jai's breaking down on his Mother' shoulder! His emotional breakdown on being asked if Aditi was there in the party along with his fianc was so touching and so natural! Also came to highlight the relationship he shared with his Mother, a very emotional and beautiful scene!
Jai fulfilling the three conditions of being a Ranjhor Man : A bit outrageous and unrealistic in an otherwise very straightforward film, the way in which the plot was woven into the main storyline is the work of an intelligent mind and when you see it in totality, it feels just right! Also, the absurdity of the situation adds both humor and pathos…the clincher was Jai's declaration of love to Aditi at the airport, him lying on the floor, surrounded by gun-totting commandos and holding Aditi's hand, he says in a casual yet intense manner, "I love you Meow…." Now if that doesn't make you grin widely…..😃
The songs went perfectly with the pitch of the movie, best out of the lot was "Aditi", "Dil kabhi ganda…" and "Papu can't dance"…the choreography in the latter was very good!
For a change, characters wore clothes that real people also wear in real life and not torn vests, clinging chiffons and chandelier earrings in broad daylight!🤔 The sets were also very good, I loved Jai's house…nice to see the hero living in a middle-class house and actually helping his Mother with the household chores! The small touches were what made all the difference, Aditi inspite of being rich drives around a small-budget car on her own, Jai doesn't own a mobile, Amit is always in painter's rags….interesting touches which add the unlikely depth to even an ordinary movie!
On the down side, the part where the four friends relate the story to a girl outside their group was not done up to the mark! It kind of dragged the proceedings and was remincent of SRK's Chalte Chalte where the narrator also happens to be the four friends of the lead pair! Also, what looked out of place was Aditi's parent's getting so hassled up about her marriage...it looked totally incongrous with their characters and also the fact that a movie which showcases a more or less realistic story of a bunch of youngsters would actually make us believe that girls out of college head straight for matrimony...more so someone so individualistic and independent as Aditi!😕 (Also, Genelia's hair cut in the last scene was atorcious!) Dunno if this is a flipside, but the portryal of friendship between Jai and Aditi was done so well, that in the end, I personally found it difficult to see them as a "couple"😕 They somehow clicked tremedously as best buddies who are unaware of their real feelings for one another rather than as a lovey dovey couple returning from their honeymoon!
This is definitely not a movie for cynics or for lovers of serious cinema! It is very fun-filled, light-hearted and extremely entertaining…yet it is not a mindless situational comedy…the humor and emotion come out from the characters and not the situation and that is why the movie is special!
It is a genre movie and like many of its kind (Dil Chahta Hai, Jab We Met, Socha Na Tha) it will be a repeat favorite…one that you would love to watch again and again!
I loved it. if u want masti then watch it.
