Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (Movie Review)

You'll leave the cinema happy to have hung out with the young cast

For a while now in Bollywood cinema, the growth of the multiplex concept has resulted in the arrival of genre films. Hence, we now have sci-fi, thrillers, suspense, children's cinema, teen-comedies, love stories etc - and not all rolled into one.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is a genre film. A simple, sweet, teen-comedy that marks the debut of Aamir Khan's nephew Imran Khan. Unlike his uncle's debut in the classic QSQT, which had women across India writing love notes to Aamir in their blood, Imran's beginning will probably not generate THAT sort of frenzy.

However, comparisons are unfair and while Imran Khan lacks the star presence of his uncle or the likes of Hrithik Roshan, he does well in a film that will be remembered and appreciated for its freshness, earnestness and honesty.

Imran in numerous interviews has stated that Jaane Tu was not his film, but a group film. And the young man is absolutely right in crediting his co-actors. It is a group film about a group of college kids and the typical group dynamics that goes with that strange territory of high-school or college.

Jai Singh Rathore (Imran Khan), Aditi (Genelia), Jignesh Patel (Nirav Mehta), Sandhya (Aliskha Varde), Shaleen (Sughanda) and Rotlu (Karan) are part of the college gang in focus.

Jai and Aditi are best friends within the group. Rotlu likes Aditi. Sandhya likes Jai. But, Jai and Aditi like each other - in that platonic sort of way. Given the tagline of the film asks us when do we know it's love, the plot is a real no-brainer. In a nutshell, it traces the journey of Jai and Aditi discovering that they're actually in love.

The end is no surprise, but in this case it's the means to arriving at the end that makes Jaane Tu such a refreshing watch. The characters are real, believable and endearing. And what a relief that they actually look their age!

Abbas Tyrewala's directorial debut and the high-production values make the film easy on the eye and immensely watchable. Smart lines delivered with remarkable effortlessness by all the actors result in a real-like film that has focused on the more important elements such as casting, dialogues and details allowing us to overlook even crucial factors such as script and narration.

There's no point in over-analysing a film like Jaane Tu as it demonstrates no wannabe aspirations of cinematic greatness. It's honest in its appeal as it clearly wants to entertain and leave the viewer with a bit of nostalgia and a healthy feeling of light-heartedness that accompanies college films.

While Jaane Tu is Imran's debut vehicle, it is really Genelia who steals the show. The actress is a real livewire on screen and conveys those annoying feelings of jealousy, confusion, irritability and fake happiness without any problem.

Within the gang, who sport very Bombay nicknames such as Rats (Jai), Meow (Aditi), Bombs (Sandhya), Jiggy (Jignesh), the guys fare much better than the girls. Jiggy delights as the Gujju while Rotlu and Bombs together are smashing as the couple who discover each other as soul mates when left solo by their crushes, Jai and Aditi.

Supporting cast members like Ratna Pathak Shah as Jai's mum, Paresh Rawal as the police inspector, Naseeruddin Shah, as Jai's dead Rajput father who speaks from his portrait hold, fort magnificently.

Even the sub-plot of Jai's rite of passage as a true male Rathore from Ranjhore family by fulfilling three conditions - beating up a person, spending time in jail and riding a horse - is largely saved and made palatable by way of the safe casting of the Shahs and Arbaaz and Sohail Khan, who appear as Rathore boys in the guise of dancing cowboys.

A. R. Rahman's music is used suitably bearing the tone and theme of the film. Although his Tu Bole Main Boloon sounded eerily reminiscent of the "You Say Tomato, I Say Tomatoe" song one hummed as a child.

Sure, there are a few loose ends. Like what does Ratna Pathak Shah do other than read books, fight with policemen and talk to her dead husband? Or how does Jai get away without being shot after breaking through airport controls? But, it's all minor within the big picture.

Jaane Tu gets every aspect of human relationships right. Brother-sister through Aditi and her brother Amit, platonic friends through Aditi and Jai and parent-child through all the characters.

Perhaps the narrative could have been a little shorter and a few chapters from the gang's life could have been cut out, but chances are, you'll leave the cinema happy to have hung out with Genelia's gang, than not.

Movie Reviews

Two decades ago, the Mansoor Khan-helmed QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK, starring two newcomers [Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla], focused on teenage love, with parental opposition acting as an obstacle. The story wasn't new, but the treatment was fresh and inventive. QSQT remains one of the finest reference films in this genre and rightly so!

JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA is a love story as well, but it's more of an Archie-Jughead-Veronica-Betty kind of a plot, set in the current milieu. We witnessed a gist of it a few years ago in the Shahid Kapur launch pad ISHQ VISHK.

JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA doesn't dare to be different. Basically a simple tale about a group of friends, it focuses on one couple that's in love, but is in a state of denial. Haven't we watched similar love stories in the past, you may ask. Sure, we have, but the execution of the subject makes all the difference.

Write your own movie review of Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na
Large portions of JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA have been executed well by debutante director Abbas Tyrewala, but the problem lies in the second hour when the film gets lengthy and also, a few tracks throw a spanner in the otherwise smooth proceedings. Even the climax, although well shot, is pass [very filmy in an otherwise real film], since a number of films have had similar endings.

Yet, despite the shortcomings, JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA works for a number of solid reasons and that's what the viewer carries home. A decent fare that takes you back to your adolescence, when friends seem to be the be-all and end-all.

Jai [Imran Khan] and Aditi [Genelia] are buddies. In fact, they hang out with their group of friends, but have eyes for each other only. Their friends know that Jai and Aditi are perfect for each other. Their parents know this as well. Everybody knows this. But the couple doesn't. So when do they realize its love?

Don't expect fireworks or melodrama in this prem kahani. It's an extremely simple, uncomplicated tale that never goes over the top. The bonding amongst friends is well established. So is the relationship that Ratna Pathak Shah shares with her deceased husband's portrait [reminds you of Ashok Saraf-Priya Tendulkar relationship in the popular comedy show HUM PAANCH].

Besides, the two [popular] songs that come in the initial reels -- 'Kabhi Kabhi' and 'Pappu Can't Dance' -- only spice up the proceedings. The arrival of the 'third angle' in this love story [Manjari Phadnis] is perfect. Everything is faultless in the first hour.

But the second hour lets you down. The Ayaz-Genelia relationship is, again, well developed, but the second hour gets a tad lengthy. But what looks completely out of place in this light and breezy entertainer is the Rajput connection and how it saves the lead man from the cop [Paresh Rawal]. This track irritates!

Also, the climax, set in an airport, is beaten to death. There's no novelty in it, since we've seen the same ending in film after film.

Abbas Tyrewala has the makings of a fine director. A.R. Rahman's music is already a rage and the two songs at the start are superb compositions. Cinematography is excellent.

Every member of the cast stands out, but the film belongs to Imran and Genelia. Imran has been presented as the boy-next-door and that works in his favor. He has screen presence and acts very well for a first timer. Most importantly, he looks the part. Genelia adds freshness to her scenes. What makes you take to Genelia is her spontaneity. Also, the mischievous look in her eyes conveys sorrow with equal ease. Wish to see more of her in Hindi movies! Manjari is a complete natural. She is very effective.

The group of friends -- Karan [as Rotlu], Alishka [as Bombs], Nirav [as Jiggy] and Sughanda [as Shaleen] -- are excellent. Each compliments the other well. Ratna Pathak Shah is highly competent. Jayant Kripalani and Anuradha Patel [as Genelia's parents] are sweet. Pratiek Babbar [as Genelia's brother] springs a pleasant surprise. He is flawless in an unconventional role. Ayaz Khan [as Genelia's fianc] registers a strong impact. A good actor!

Rajat Kapoor and Kitu Gidwani [as Manjari's parents] are fair. Naseeruddin Shah is in terrific form. Paresh Rawal, again, is wonderful. Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan irritate, mainly because the roles don't work.

On the whole, JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA is a breezy entertainer which will be loved by its target audience -- the youth. At the box-office, business at multiplexes should ensure a speedy recovery for this moderate budget film. A profitable venture!

Movie Review: Jaane Tu...

Jaane Tu... : Fun in Parts

Indya.com Rating: 3.5/5
Cast: Imran Khan, Genelia D'Souza, Naseruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Prateik Babbar, Anuradha Patel, Ayaz Khan

Director: Abbas Tyrewalla

Jaane Tu… is the story of Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D'Souza) and their love for another which everyone – from their friends to their family recognize but Jai and Aditi. Ready to do anything for one another Jai and Aditi are the best of friends but just not in love – or so they think. So when Aditi's parents think of getting the two engaged after they finish college, Jai and Aditi run in opposite directions because they aren't in love with one another.

In fact the two decide to hook the other up with a partner. In comes meghna – jai's girlfriend whom he meets in a club while saving her from two men who are trying to get too close to the girl. Now Jai has time only for Meghna and his friends take second position. He goes to films with Meghna, he hangs out with Meghna – he does everything he used to do with his friends now with Meghna. So while Aditi keeps a smile up for everyone else, she is quite hurt with this change in Jai's attitude. Now she decides its time for her to find herself a man. In walks Ayaz Khan as a suitable match for Aditi and soon enough the two are engaged to be married.

But when Jai sees his Aditi with another man it suddenly hits him that he is actually in love with his best friend. Does she feel the same way? Should he tell her that? And what about his own girlfriend? While Jai tries to sort himself out Aditi ends things with her fianc and decides to go to the US to get away from everything. Will Jai be able to stop her?

As a debutant Imran has done well for himself and it is quite evident that he has a great career ahead as long as he picks the right films. Genelia has a done a good job too. A surprise performance came from Prateik Babbar who plays Aditi's brother. Definitely a lad to watch out for. Ratna Pathak's performance with Naseruddin Shah re-instated why the two are still one of the best actors of the industry.

But having said that there were a couple of things in the film that were unnecessary like Arbaaz and Sohail Khan and their shenanigans with the horses. Also the last climax scene when Jai tries to reach his Aditi, it went on for longer than needed. And that too with him on his horse and then running wild right up to immigration in an international airport – no wonder Indian airports are considered to have lax security! The film could have definitely enjoyed a tighter edit on the film and the script… it was surprising to see someone like Aamir Khan allowing something like that in a film backed by him.

Credit should also be given to Abbas Tyrewalla for ensuring that the story remained what it is – a simple story of love and friendship between two best mates. For many most of the film will be clichd in many places but while that maybe its drawback, for some it will also be a the factor that will tip things in the film's favour because it will allow most of us to relate to a time and place in our lives…
