Last year was a mixed bag of accomplishments for Priyadarshan as his two releases GARAM MASALA and KYON..KI met with dissimilar outcomes at the box-office.
GARAM MASALA was a slow starter but eventually became a hit but KYON…KI didn't click. He had attempted a serious genre with KYON…KI after a long time. Though a master at comedy, he has displayed his ease with serious cinema before with GARDISH and VIRASAT. An efficient storyteller, Priyan is an accomplished filmmaker beyond doubt and claims great respect for his praiseworthy talent. The maker of HERA PHERI is now back with something he is most popular for and that is Comedy.
Priyan's latest directorial flick is titled MALAMAAL WEEKLY that is produced by Percept Pictures Company. The story and screenplay is by Priyadarshan with dialogues corralled by Manisha Korde. The presenter of the film is Sahara One Motion Pictures. The music for the film has been scored by Uttank V. Vora and the lyrics have been penned by Sai Barve, Chhaya Vora, Nitin Raykwar and Nawab Arzoo. Telephoto Entertainment Co. is the co-producer of the movie.
MALAMAAL WEEKLY is about the struggles and survival of people in a small town. Plagued by poverty, poor harvesting and a monster of a money lender called Karamkall, the people in this town are barely able to make ends meet. Lilaram, one of the town's inhabitants, earns a meager source of income through his business of selling Malamaal Weekly lottery tickets. One day, while watching TV at a local tea stall, he learns that one of the tickets he sold has in fact won the one crore rupee bumper prize.
As most of the villagers don't own a TV and are illiterate, Lilaram knows that he is privy to this information. The question is how to find that one ticket from the 105 he's sold. An idea hits him!
Lilaram throws a party: a virtual festivity for people who are fighting to survive. Lilaram, already debt-ridden manages to host the party at the expense of his one last asset- his goat kid, who is treated like a child by Lilaram's wife!!
Now the party is only for his 105 customers on the condition that they bring along their tickets as an invite to the celebrations. As luck would have it, all turn up except one- Anthony the drunkard. Lilaram decides to pay him a visit. On reaching Anthony's house, he finds Anthony dead in front of the TV. Too shocked on hearing about his victory, Anthony is DEAD with the lottery ticket still in his hand!!
What follows from hereon is a rollercoaster ride of unusual events with surprising twists and turns at every stage. Extremely funny situations, hilarious circumstances lead to a culmination of laugh-riot climax which reveals the Malamaal Weekly Lottery winners….or losers!
The film stars Priyadarsha's favorite Paresh Rawal along with a horde of talented actors that include Riteish Deshmukh, Reemma, Sudha Chandran, Om Puri, Shakti Kapoor, Arbaaz Khan, Asrani, Rajpal Yadav, Rasika Joshi and also the sizzling Rakhee Sawant.
Given Priyan's expertise and effortlessness when it comes to comedy and a cast and crew of such magnitude, MALAMAAL WEEKLY should be definitely winning a Bumper draw at the box-office!
