Actress 'not afraid' of Hindu nationalist outcry over Deepa Mehta film Water

MUMBAI, India (AP) - Playing down protests, actress Lisa Ray said she didn't believe the controversy surrounding her new film on widows - treated harshly under Hindu tradition - was justified.

Hindu nationalists protested the filming of Water, forcing it to be shot in neighbouring Sri Lanka.

They said the movie insulted Hindu traditions.

"I don't feel any fear," Ray, a top model who grew up in Toronto, told the DNA newspaper on Monday, ahead of the Indian release of Water later this month.

Directed by well-known Toronto-based filmmaker Deepa Mehta, Water premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It is now showing in selected theatres across Canada.

"Don't see the film if you don't like it, but don't stop others from seeing it," said Ray who plays the lead role of a widow in the movie. "I don't see anything objectionable in Water."

The film portrays the difficult life of child widows in India in the 1930s.

Under ancient Hindu tradition, widows were considered bad luck and sometimes even blamed for their husbands' death. Remarriage of widows was frowned upon - although there were no such social barriers for widowers.

The movie focuses on a home for widows where they were sent by their families.

Mehta has denied the film is anti-Hindu and said it revolved around a widow who defied social stigma and sought to lead a normal life.

Ray, 35, has acted in six movies since her 2001 debut.

Thanks for sharing...People don't want to digest the truth....It happened in some parts of India decades ago.Widows were asked to shave their head so that they dont look good and refrain themselves from having the relationship again... ..I don't think subject is bad...But the film makers also should take care not to make any mistakes and make the film carefully..

I agree .. As film makers they do have the responsibility to show reality in a way that it doesnt hurt any sentiments, but yeah we love to shy away from the negetive things that used to happen or are still a part of our culture
