Part 45

King Angarparna said, "Arjun, let me now relate to you the story of Tapati.

Tapati was the daughter of Surya, the sun-god. She was born after Goddess Savitri. She took great interest in penance, and her beauty was famous in all three realms. When she became of the marriageable age, Lord Surya began to search for a groom, but he found none worthy of his sweet daughter. In those days, there was a king named Samvaran who was an ardent devotee of Lord Surya, and also a righteous and justice-loving King. Surya decided to give his daughter to him.

Once when King Samvaran had visited a hilly garden to hunt, his horse died in the midst of the wild owing to hunger and tiredness. After roaming around for a few hours, he suddenly saw a beautiful lady standing in front of him. For a moment he thought that the moon and the fire have blended into female and were standing before him. He stood still, overcome with love, looking at the beauty. He thought, is this Goddess Laxmi herself? Or is she a ray of sunshine descended on earth to bewitch men. After sometime he decided that the Gods much have churned the three worlds to have accumulate beauty, with which they have made this girl.

Finally the King gathered himself and asked her, "Who are you? Whose wife you are, and why have you come to this deep and dangerous forest? You look neither a celestial nymph nor a Goddess, neither a serpent's maid nor a Rakshas! O beautiful, I have lost myself in your beauty!" The moment he said this, the girl smiled and disappeared. The king was so overcome, that he could not bear even a second of separation from the girl and he dropped to the ground. Taking pity on his condition, the girl appeared again and said, "O King, it's not appropriate for you to lose control over your mind like this." Seeing the lady, the King sat up and said, "O beautiful maid! I cannot bear to even look at any other girl in this world after seeing you! I have heard the Gandharv way of marriage is the best of all way, so please marry me in a Gaandharv ceremony!" The girl said, "No Sir! I am a maid, and thus cannot choose my own husband till my father permits me to! You say I've taken away your heart. I say, you have taken away mine. So, if you want to achieve me, pray to my father, Lord Surya. I am Surya's daughter, Savitri's sister. I am Tapati." Saying thus the girl disappeared again. The King fell to the ground, unconscious.

King Samvaran's Prime minister had been worried for his Lord and had come to search for him. He revived the King who then dismissed the rest of the party and related the incident to his minister. Making the Mantri his regent, the King started off on a rigorous penance. He appointed, in his mind, Sage Vashishth as his chaplain. After twelve days, the Sage appeared before him, and offered to approach Surya on his behalf. When the King offered his respects, Sage Vashishth flew up to the level of the Sun. Surya on learning of his identity, blessed him and said, "Ask for a boon! I'll give that to you even if it is the rarest commodity!" The Sage bowed down, "Yes Sir. It is indeed a most rare commodity, that I seek, which is the hand of your beautiful daughter Tapati for King Samvaran. He is righteous, handsome and a bachelor. The greatest of men, he is the only man worthy of your virtuous daughter!"
"He indeed is! You, Sage, are the best of Sages, King Samvaran is the greatest of Kings and Tapati, my daughter is best of women. Thus, I will happily give her away to the King in marriage!" Saying thus he gave the hand of his daughter to Vashishth, enstrusting him to pass her on to Samvaran.

You see how hard the King had to perform penances for whole twelve days, for the Sage to appear before him! So Arjun, King Samvaran could obtain Lord Surya's daughter only due to the virtues of his purohit. After that, he stayed back at the hilly gardens with his bride, leaving his kingdom in the hands of a worthy minister. Like this he roamed around in the forest with Lady Tapati for around twelve years, while his kingdom's economy started to decline. Moreover, Lord Indra did not cause rainfall for these twelve years causing a want of water in the whole kingdom. The citizens started to flee the country with all their family, and those who remained were too weak to move. Seeing such a condition of people, Sage Vashishth prayed to the Lords for rains, and brought back the King. The moment the King entered the city, Lord Indra caused the rain to fall on the fields, and food grew again. Prosperity returned to the kingdom of King Samvaran. After this the King performed a yajna spanning over twelve more years. Now Arjun, King Kuru, your ancestor was the son of King Samvaran and Tapati. Therefore I called you Taapatya, Tapati's descendent."

Arjun said, "King Angarparna! I wish to know more about Sage Vashishth, who used to be the chaplain of our ancestors."

Angarparna said, "Arjun, Sage Vashishth emerged from the mind of Lord Brahma, and was a son of his. He is also the husband of Mother Arundhati. He is free from the control of lust and anger. Though angered at the crime committed by Sage Vishwamitra, he did not curse the Kushik dynasty. Despite having the necessary powers, he did not try to avenge the death of his hundred sons, and nor did he try to bring them back to life. The Ikshvaku dynasty had risen to power under his very guidance. Every King having a prestigious background should appoint someone as his purohit. One who wishes to conquer the world will always assign the leadership to a true Brahmin. So I suggest, you also depute someone as your chaplain!"

Bahu samyak kathitaa Tapati-Samvaranayoh katha!
(You have told the story splendidly.)

SO finally we shall meet Dhaumya!
And does Vasishta's story also appear in the same chapter?
Or have you added it?

Wow!! Thank you so much for the praise! Yeah, next in line are Vashishth, Vishwamitra and Kslmashpaad. Dhaumya comes in the next-to-next or next-to-next-to-next!
