THE HEART KNOWS
CHAPTER 10(b)

Anjali entered Arnav's room. She switched on the lights and found him on the recliner. He had one hand behind his head and he was staring at the pool.

"Chotey, what are you doing in the dark?"

"Kuch nahi, di. I was feeling sleepy." [Nothing, di.]

She touched his cheek and asked, "Khushiji ki baare mein soch rahi ho na? She will come back to where she belongs. She will come back to you. Pyaar mein vishwas karo." [You were thinking of Khushiji, weren't you? She will come back to where she belongs. She will come back to you. Have faith in love.]

Arnav hugged her. "Di, why don't you call her home?"

"I actually came to your room to ask about that. Shall I call her in the evening tomorrow?"

"As you wish, di."

"You will be there, right?"

He nodded. "Di, she hasn't seen Akash, jijaji and mamiji. Will you make sure that they are there tomorrow?"

"Your jijaji will be back tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" he was shocked. "Where is he?"

"Ek client ko mil ne ke liye Chandigarh gaya." [He went to Chandigarh to meet a client.]

He couldn't find words to speak. He just nodded.

Before she left his room, she turned to see him. "Chotey, hum ek baat kehna chaathey hain." [Chotey, I would like to say something.]

"Kya, di?" [What, di?]

"Khushiji aur Siddharth ke beech kuch nahi hai. Wo dhono bahut achche dhost hain. You don't have to be sad or upset when you see them. They…" [There is nothing between Khushiji and Siddharth. Both of them are very good friends.]

He interrupted her and said, "I know, di. Yesterday, I heard them speak."

"Come down for dinner."

He nodded.

He was in a big mess. His emotions were all over the place. When he had seen Khushi in Shyam's embrace in the office, he had been angry. His anger could have melted iron. However, he controlled his anger and made a decision. He wanted to give Khushi the benefit of doubt and he realized that this was a good situation.

The door had been closed and he hadn't heard one word of their conversation. He didn't know whether they went plotting against him or his sister. He was sure of one thing. His heart ached a lot. His heart told him that his love, his Khushi was upset. He knew she was upset because he had seen her reactions. As soon as Shyam left, her legs didn't support her any longer. She sat on her chair and covered her face with trembling hands. She pressed her hands against her temple. Arnav realized that she was not comfortable with Shyam. After a couple of minutes, she composed herself and left her cabin. Arnav hid behind a curtain and she didn't notice him. She told one of her colleagues that she had a head ache and was going home. She asked him to inform Arnav that she would meet him the next day. He had followed her to find where she went. True to her word, she went to her house.

For the first time, he decided to listen to his heart. There was a reason behind his decision. He had made a mistake with Siddharth. When he had listened to their conversation the previous day, he understood what kind of an idiot he was. He still didn't believe that Khushi had forgotten everything. He just believed the fact that the love, care and affection between Khushi and Siddharth were that of a father and a daughter. He had been wrong and he didn't fail to accept his mistake.

This recent mistake of his made him want to give her a chance to prove herself. As far as Shyam was concerned, Arnav didn't trust him at all.

After Khushi left, Arnav had searched for her. Even though she didn't deserve his love, he loved her. He had searched for her everywhere. He asked Aman's friend, Detective Neel, to find her. He had tried for about a month and had accepted his defeat.

After that, Arnav called Shyam aside and threatened him to stay faithful to his sister. Shyam realized that Arnav couldn't find Khushi and decided to stay with his wife. Arnav made sure that his sister was happy with her husband. Shyam stayed with her even though he once in a while left the house in the name of his job. He was okay until Arnav brought Khushi back.

Arnav shook his head to clear his thoughts. He dialled Neel's number and waited for him to attend the call.

"Detective Neel?"

"Yes, ASR."

"I want you to find out about the relationship between Khushi and Shyam. I want you to find out what they did last year."

Neel didn't respond for a while.

"Are you there?"

"Yes, ASR. I'll work on it. I'll give you the reports tomorrow."

"I'll be waiting."

He disconnected the call and thought, "Why didn't I think about this before?"

However, the truth behind his sudden thoughts was totally negative. He was digging a deep hole for Khushi. He wanted her to fall down. He wanted to prove that he was right. He wanted to make her life miserable for what she did to his lovable sister.

Arnav didn't know what he needed and what he wanted. He wanted her to lose but he needed his love. If only he realizes the difference between want and need.

What he didn't know was that, the hole he had dug for her would consume him and give him nothing but pain.

If only he had thought about investigating Shyam before……. Well, in one case, Khushi wouldn't have suffered much. On the other hand, if he had thought about it, she wouldn't have got Siddharth as her friend. Good things did happen to her but it cost her a lot. But then Khushi and Siddharth's relationship was worth it.

THE HEART KNOWS
CHAPTER 11

While Arnav was confused over what he wanted and needed, Khushi did not understand what was happening to her. There were lots of questions in her brain and unfortunately, no answers. There was one question which bothered her more. Why did Arnav's image flash in front of her when Shyam asked her if there was someone in her life?

She closed her eyes as she couldn't handle the head ache. Just thinking of Shyam made her head ache. She had no choice but to think about him. There was an odd feeling whenever she met Shyam. True, he was kind to her and at the same time pestered her by asking her to marry him. Was it enough reason to be frightened when he hugged her? No, there was more. A warning bell went off inside her head when he was near her. Even though the warning bell was faint, it was there.

Then there was Arnav. He was rude to her all the time. Well, no. Most of the times. He would be gentle and then reveal his anger. Whenever he spoke with her, a sort of warmth would spread over her and she would feel protected, as if she was in safe hands. Then why…

"Questions. Questions. Questions. Who found the word 'questions'?" she muttered.

She stopped thinking and drifted off to sleep.

"Khushi, wake up," a voice called her.

She opened her eyes a little and saw Siddharth.

"Siddhu? Your meeting is over?"

"It is half past ten," he said with a concerned look.

"What?"

"Dinner is untouched. So, I thought I should wake you up and make you eat."

She was fully awake.

"Shall we eat?"

She nodded.

They ate in silence. Siddharth noticed that she didn't say anything during dinner time. It was a first. He also saw that she was physically present in front of him but mentally, she was elsewhere. Even though he wanted to ask her the reason behind her different behaviour, he have her some space to talk about whatever it was when she wanted to.

They retired in the living room and watched Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. They sat on the big couch with their legs on the glass table in front of them. Khushi leaned on Siddharth and entwined her fingers with his. They were watching the scene where Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol dance at night when it is raining in the summer camp. Their suppressed feelings would have tired to come out and it was then that Khushi decided to open up.

"Pyaar kya hota hai, Siddhu?" [What is love, Siddhu?]

Is this what it was all about? Siddharth looked at her for a few seconds and said, "Every one has their own definitions and meanings for love. Me, I remember only one. When I told Anjali about the girl I love, she told me one thing which has stayed with me."

"What did she say?"

"Jab pyaar hotha hai na, tab unke door jaane ke khayal se saanse ruk jaati hai."

"Was it like that for you?"

"Worse than that," he replied. "Love is sharing, caring and sacrificing. If the person you love is upset, you would do anything to bring a smile on their lips. You would go to any extents to make them happy. For them, you would be prepared to even die. Without them, you are nobody."

She removed her fingers from his and hugged his arm tight.

"Khushi, kaun hai woh?" [Khushi, who is he?]

"Kaun?" [Who?]

"Jis ke baarein mein tum soch rahi ho." [The one you are thinking about right now.]

"Koi nahi."

"I know you better. Kaho. Kya hua?" [Tell me. What happened?]

"I met him in office. He is very good with me. He smiles a lot and makes me smile too. He told me that he loves me and wants to marry me. Par mein unke saath comfortable nahi hoon. [But I am not comfortable with him.] It is like I can't let my guard down when he is near me. I always have some sort of a warning signal in my brain when I am with him."

"Yeh pyaar nahi hai, Khushi. He is obsessed with you. This is not love at all."

"Patha hai. I wasn't thinking about him. The guy I was thinking about, I met him a few days back," she started slowly. "He always shouts at me. He hurts me a lot. One moment he is gentle and the next he turns angry and is very rude. Phir bhi, I think about him a lot. When I hear his voice, my heart rejoices. It starts beating faster. I can't understand the mixed signals I receive from him. He cares about me a lot and at the same time, he behaves as if he hates me. He is always there to catch me when I fall. He is concerned whether I have had my food or not. I feel safe with him. And then when the other guy I told you about asked me whether I have someone in my life, this one's face flashed in front of me."

"Do you trust him?"

"Which one?"

"You can kick the first guy out of our life. If you can't do it, tell me. I will be more than willing to do it. I am talking about the other one. Do you trust him?"

"I don't know whether I trust him or not. But I feel safe when he is around. It must mean that I subconsciously trust him."

"What a contradicting character?" Siddharth thought. "He shouts at my sweetheart and hurts her. Yet, he is there to catch her when she falls. I need to know more about him."

"Kaun hai woh?" he repeated his previous question. [Who is he?]

"Will tell you some other day."

"You won't tell me now?"

She shook her head.

"Okay. I will wait. It is almost twelve. Shall we sleep?"

Khushi did not move.

"Khushi."

She looked at him.

"Kya hua?" [What happened?]

"Agar meri zindagi mein koi aur hota to?" [What if there is someone else in my life?]

"Koi aur?" [Someone else?]

"What if there is someone waiting for me to return to my previous life? Mein yahaan kisi aur ke barein mein soch rahi hoon. Agar meri dil mein pyaar ka jagaa khali nahi to?" [I am thinking of someone. What if the place in my heart is already filled?]

"If someone loved you, he would have moved heaven and hell to find you. Tumari guzare hui kal ke liye aane wali kal ko sacrifice math karo. Uske baarein mein tum dil se soch. Dil ghalat rastha khabhi nahi dhikayegi. [Don't sacrifice your tomorrows for yesterday. Think about him with your heart. Hearts can never make mistakes.] As far as your fear is concerned, don't worry. Mein hoon tumare saath. [I am with you.] If you think you love him, don't make the same mistake I did. Tell it to him. Whatever the consequences, just open up to him before it is too late."

Before she was able to say something, her phone rang.

"No," she grumbled.

"Pehla wala ya dhoosra wala?" [First one or the second one?]

"Kaash dhoosra wala hota." [Wish it was the second person.]

"Put it on loudspeaker mode."

She did as she was told.

"Hello Khushiji."

"Aap itni raath mein?" [You are calling at this time?]

"Did I disturb you?"

"No. No. I was watching a movie."

"Due to some urgent work, I have to leave for a few days. Maine socha ki aap ko bhata doon. You will be fine, won't you?" [I thought I should tell you.]

"Mujhe kya hoga? [What will happen to me?] I will be fine. Anyway, thanks for telling me."

"I'll meet you as soon as I return."

"Okay."

"Khushiji, I lo…"

"The battery is dying. Mein rakthi hoon. We'll talk later."

"Poor guy, you didn't let him say those three words," he teased her.

"Poor guy or obsessive guy? Waise bhi I don't think I will be comfortable hearing those three words in front of my father."

"Woh toh hai." [That is right.]

She yawned and laid her head on his lap.

"Ab so jao. We'll talk tomorrow." [Now go to sleep.]

She slowly got up from the couch and dragged herself to her bed room. "Good night, Siddhu."

"Good night, sweetheart."

The next morning, Siddharth went to his office and Khushi went to hers to finish the second design. Arnav arrived an hour later. She apologized for her sudden disappearance the previous day. He just nodded.

"Shall we start?" he asked her.

"Sure."

Arnav told her what he wanted and she made the necessary changes. The changes were minor and it was over within an hour. Arnav was satisfied with it and he told her that she could take the rest of the day off.

Anjali called her and invited her for lunch. She didn't leave a choice for Khushi. She accepted.

Siddharth's work was over and he joined Khushi in her cabin. Arnav showed him the set designs and they discussed about the clothes and the models.

"Khushi, I have to go to Mumbai today."

"Aaj?" [Today?]

"Abhi." [Now.]

"Abhi?" [Now?]

"Flight is at eleven. Kuch kaam agaya." [There is some work.]

"When will you be back?"

"Tomorrow. You will be fine?"

"I'll manage. Anjaliji has invited me for lunch. Can I go?"

"Have you completed your work?"

"Almost done. I have to check whether all the things are ready for the sets and decoration."

"I have asked her to take a day off," Arnav told him. "So, she is free."

"If I know Anjali, she wouldn't have given you a chance to say no," Siddharth told her with a smile.

Arnav was surprised. "You know my sister?"

"Oh, didn't I tell you? We studied in the same college."

Arnav didn't know that.

"Khushi, I'll drop you in Arnav's house and then go to the airport."

Arnav excused himself and left the office. He was surprised with himself that he wasn't angry with the two anymore.

here is chapter 12
THE HEART KNOWS
CHAPTER 12

An hour later, Siddharth dropped Khushi in Shantivan and gave her some usual last minute instructions and advices.

"Don't roam around late at night. The car will be waiting for you whenever you want to go home. Eat well and..."

"Siddhu, relax. I will be fine.'

"I know, sweetheart. But I won't be unless I tell you everything."

"Okay. Go ahead."

"Take care."

She hugged him and said, "You too."

He kissed her forehead and said, "I'll call you as soon as I reach Mumbai."

He left and Khushi watched until his car disappeared around the corner.

"Andar chalein?" Anjali, who had been a silent spectator, asked her. [Shall we go in?]

Khushi nodded and followed her.

Akash was the first one to see her. He masked his surprise and welcomed her. Mamiji arrived a little later after dinner was served. She had changed a lot. She took care of Payal as her own daughter and she was happy when she saw Khushi. Arnav arrived when they were in the middle of their lunch.

There were two empty chairs. One next to Khushi and the other one next to his sister. He occupied the one next to Khushi as he didn't want to give the chance to Shyam.

"Di, jijaji kahaan hai?" he asked Anjali. [Di, where is jijaji?]

"Kaam ke silsiley mein Shyamji bilkul aap ki taraa hai, chote. He is busy with a client and he is having his lunch in the room." [As far as work is concerned, he is just like you, chote.]

Arnav gave Khushi a cold shoulder. Neither did he look at her even once nor did he seem interested in what she said.

"Khushiji, if your work is over, can you meet us daily?" Anjali asked her.

"You are working?" Akash asked her in surprise.

"It was Arnavji's idea," she replied.

"Akash, you should see her designs," Anjali told him. "It was just awesome."

"Looks like I have missed it. Have you seen it, Payal?"

"Haan, Akash. Humne bhi dekha." [Yes, Akash. I have also seen it.]

"Bhai, it's not fair. Everybody has seen it except me."

Khushi couldn't believe her ears. Arnav, who was always rude to her, showed it to his family. She looked at him but he didn't see her. It was more like he didn't want to see her.

"Don't dream, Khushi," she thought. "It is because the show means a lot to him. It is not because you designed it."

After lunch, they settled in the dinning room. Arnav excused himself saying that he had some work.

"Chote, you can sit too," Anjali told him.

"Sorry, di. The show is nearing and I don't have time to waste."

With that he walked to his room. He stopped only when he heard his sister asking Khushi about their photos.

"I was cleaning my room today and I found a few albums. Want to see them?"

Khushi smiled and nodded.

"I'll get them, di," Payal told her and left to get them.

She was back within a couple of minutes.

Albums meant that Shyam would be there. Arnav knew that he wouldn't get a much better opportunity. He stood in the same place and looked at Khushi. Nobody noticed him.

After a while Naniji and Mamiji went for a small nap. Akash had a few business calls to make. Anjali and Payal looked at the photos with Khushi. Anjali told her the story of how mischievous their cousin NK was. Akash was silent as always. Khushi's eyes lingered on Arnav's photo for a little longer that the rest. Anjali closed the album and reached for the second one.

Akash called Payal and asked her for a file. She went to their room to search for it.

It was just Anjali and Khushi.

"This is my wedding album," she said with a smile.

Arnav heard the happiness behind the smile and wondered whether he would be able to retain the happiness in her voice after everything was over.

"Anjaliji, you look beautiful in this photo," Khushi told her as she pointed to the first photo in the album. "Aap ki pathi ka naam kya hai?" [What is your husband's name?]

"Shyam."

The name sent a chill down her spine.

"What does he do?" she asked as she tried to hide the fear from her voice.

"He is a lawyer."

Khushi's brain worked over time. Was it a coincidence that the person who asked her to marry him was a lawyer by the name Shyam? Anjali missed the shocked expression on Khushi's face.

She turned another page and said, "This is Shyamji."

Khushi felt the colour draining from her skin. She knew that she turned pale. How was it possible? Why did he lie to her? Why did he want to marry her when he was already married to a wonderful woman?

Khushi bit her lips to stop the tears pooling in her eyes to flow down her cheeks. Her thoughts then turned to Arnav.

She thought, "He saw me when I was having lunch with Shyam that afternoon. Was that why he was so angry with me? If he saw Shyam, then why didn't he tell me that he is his jijaji? What must he think of me? No wonder he always shouts at me. If only he told me the truth..."

Anjali didn't notice the turmoil Khushi faced.

"Anjali di," OP called her.

"Kya hua, Om Prakashji?" [What happened, Om Prakashji?]

"Arnav bhaiya ne dhavaai nahi liya." [Arnav bhaiya has not taken his medicines.]

"Iss chote bhi na... Aap isse chote ka kamre mein rakhiye. He will remember." [You keep the medicines in his room.]

"Theek hai, Anjali di." [Okay, Anjali di.]

Anjali asked Khushi to wait for a moment and went to the kitchen to give the medicines to OP.

Khushi closed the album and followed Anjali into the kitchen. She had to tell her the truth. She fidgeted with her dupatta and walked into the kitchen.

"You have to tell her, Khushi," she told herself.

Unknown to her or anyone in the house, Arnav watched her every move and her every little expression.
