CHAPTER 5
"A New Beginning"
Ominous silence filled the air of KC as the next candidate entered the MD's cabin, though it did not last long as it was replaced by an angry growl of the MD and a scared cry of the candidate within matter of a few minutes. Every candidate went in fully confident and came out flustered and scared. They went in to give their interview and came out interrogated.
As Maan was about to call in the next candidate, Savitri Devi barged into his cabin along with Mrs Raichand. She ordered Sasha to leave the cabin and announce a break of 15 minutes to the candidates waiting outside.
Before Maan could protest Mrs Raichand silently stopped him by giving him a pleading look. Once Sasha left the cabin Savitri Devi turned to look at Maan and said "what do you think you doing"
Maan gave her now-what look.
"Aren't you supposed to be at the airport right now? Didn't you promise to receive Naintara" Savitri Devi asked.
"Correction... you promised on my behalf" Maan said.
"It's the same thing" Savitri Devi snapped.
"What do you want me to do? Leave my work and go receive some stranger" Maan replied with a hint of sarcasm.
"Yes... leave your work at once and go to the airport" Savitri Devi retorted back.
"Dadima I have to take interviews" Maan said, in an even tone.
"I will handle all that" Savitri Devi replied.
"But---
"Maan leave at once" Savitri Devi ordered.
"Dadi you do not know---
"I have handled this company for a longer time than you if you need to be reminded about that and I am fully capable of hiring deserving candidates and besides if you keep rejecting people with the blink of an eye there is no way anyone would be selected for at least a month if not more. Leave now" Savitri Devi said as she opened the cabin door gesturing Maan to leave.
Fuming, Maan obliged and left the cabin. He knew there was no point arguing.

Geet stepped out of the elevator and made her way across the corridor as the nervousness ate her inside but she was careful not to let it show on her face. She walked towards reception and to her surprise she knew the receptionist. It was pinky, the girl she'd met on the train. Pinky was equally surprised to see Geet and without a second thought she pounced on Geet. Geet did not expect that but she heartily hugged her back.
"What are you doing here" pinky asked.
"I have an interview scheduled at 12" Geet replied
Pinky instantly regained her composure and took her position behind the reception counter once again. Pinky may be childish but she knew her job well.
"Just wait there till your turn" pinky said as she showed Geet the route to the waiting room.
As Geet turned to leave pinky whispered in her ear "all the best... I hope you get selected. I desperately need a friend in this monster house"
Geet smiled at pinky and left. She waited anxiously for her turn to come. Her nervousness increased seeing the flustered faces of the rejected candidates. From all she could make out she knew the interviewer gave those poor souls a hard time.
As her turn approached she took a few deep breaths and mentally rehearsed her answers, that is, if those questions would be asked.
And then, a girl dressed in a semi-formal blue dress came out of the MD's cabin and announced a break.
Soon after Sasha left, Geet dropped her purse accidently and bent down to pick it. As she got up after picking the purse she saw a Man dressed in formal pants, a white shirt and black waist coat walking really fast towards the elevator. She couldn't see his face as he walked with his back facing her. As she looked around she noticed everyone was standing and the air around was filled with such pleasing charisma and dominance that the instant thought that came to her mind was "what an aura, this guy is something".
She kept staring at his retreating figure thinking "Pheche se itna achaa dikhta hai samne se kaise hoga" she instantly snapped out of her thoughts as she hit her head with her pen "stop it Geet... what the hell are you thinking. You are here for an interview not for checking out some random stranger"
After some 10 minutes Geet was called inside the MD's cabin for her interview. She walked in with full confidence, well, only on the outside because in reality she was a nervous wreck.
She took her seat as she handed over her file to Savitri Devi. As soon as Savitri Devi opened the file and read it her face went pale and instantly the paleness was replaced by a mysterious glow. She looked up to this girl sitting in front of her and her heart was filled with love and care for her just by looking at her; everything about her was like Rano. She then looked at Mrs Raichand and asked her to wait outside while she took the interview. Mrs Raichand was kind of shocked by Savitri Devi's behaviour but she ignored it thinking probably she wanted to concentrate on work without being disturbed. She looked at Geet before leaving and she felt an unknown bond with this girl. She reminded her of someone but she just couldn't figure out whom.
"So, Ms Geet Handa you are granddaughter of Mr Gurvinder Handa." Savitri Devi asked.
"Yes ma'am"
"Why would you want to do a job, I mean you don't need to do any job especially a job like this one. You do know it's not a very prestigious or important job for a girl coming from a high class background such as you" Savitri Devi said.
Geet gave her the most genuine smile and confidently answered the question. It was one of those questions she had rehearsed "I want to do it as Geet Handa not as Mr Gurvinder Hand's granddaughter"
Savitri Devi asked her some further questions which Geet confidently answered. Once done, Savitri Devi called Aditya asking him to type Geet's appointment letter. Geet had been hired.
For some odd reason Geet felt she was getting this job because of her family name and she did not like the sound of it. She voiced her query "ma'am if you are giving me this job just because of my family name, I request please look for other candidates who deserve the job better than me"
"What makes you think so" Savitri Devi asked.
"Just wanted to be sure" Geet relied
"Ms Geet let me tell you, you are getting this job entirely on merit and not anything else. I have seen your resume and I am highly impressed by it and there is no reason I should look for other candidates when the most deserving candidate is sitting right here. Please be sure me hiring you has nothing to do with your family" Savitri Devi assured Geet.
"Thank you ma'am"
"Ms Geet I have a request... uh... don't disclose anything about your family to anyone here"
Geet looked at her with confusion.
"I am sure you wouldn't want any special treatment" Savitri Devi replied reading into her confused expression.
Though this was not the true reason behind Savitri Devi's request but she was sure Geet was convinced by her reasoning.
"Thank you once again" Geet smiled.
Just then Aditya knocked at the cabin door, seeking permission to enter the cabin. Savitri Devi called him in.
"You may collect your appointment letter from Aditya here" Savitri Devi told Geet.
Aditya gave her the appointment letter and asked her to sign some odd documents but before Geet could sign it Savitri Devi asked Aditya to add another clause in her contract that said she cannot be fired by anyone till her term completes.
Aditya was sort of shocked at this as he feared if MK would approve of hiring this girl or not but he added it anyway, after all her term was just for a month. And most certainly MK wouldn't want to fire anyone in that short a time. Yes, MK was a master at firing people but even the worse of employee's made it through a month at the least and this girl seemed decent. Why would MK want to fire her, she qualified for the job and above everything else she was chosen by Savitri Devi.
Geet signed her contact and left the cabin followed by Aditya.
The minute Geet left the cabin Savitri Devi called Maan without wasting a single moment. She asked him to immediately come back and tell the driver to receive Naintara. Maan was taken aback with this sudden change of attitude but he loved it. He was more than happy that now he wouldn't have to go pick up some uh... what her name was... whoever she was.
Without any delay he drove back to KC and called his driver asking him to go the airport.

As Geet expressed her happiness at having been selected for the job to Yash, he wasn't sure how he should react. He was happy as his baby sister was happy but at the same time he felt sad as Geet getting the job meant her staying in Delhi all by herself away from Yash. Yes he could move in with her but that way grandpa would get to know about her job. He had to stay in Chandigarh to keep the matter safe for Geet.
Though internally he did not want Geet to stay in Delhi but as he saw the happiness and glow on her face nothing else mattered. He wanted her happy at any cost.
But she will have to follow his conditions.
"When are you joining" Yash asked.
"Tomorrow" Geet replies with a big grin.
"Okay" he took a deep breath and said "let's show you your new home"
"New home... you remember na veju nothing luxurious and all" Geet asked.
"let's talk about it once you see the place" Yash kind of ignored her question.
Yash gave the address to the driver as he sat besides Geet in the back seat. It took them an hour to reach their destination. It was a beautiful villa, located on the outskirts of the town. It was an absolute contrast to what Geet wanted.
Geet wanted a small flat... this was a huge villa, big enough to accommodate the entire staff of KC with the building intact.
Geet wanted a simple one bed room flat... this was a double story full fledge house.
Geet wanted her flat to be in a lively area... this looked like the most deserted area of the city.
Before she could utter a word of refusal Yash spoke "princess I already told you I have my conditions and this is one of them and you will stay here, no matter what. No arguments on that. If you disagree you will have to come back to Chandigarh with me right away. Choice is yours, either stay here or Handa mansion"
"fine... what other CONDITIONS do you have" Geet pouted angrily.
"not many...uh... let's see... you will not use public transport, I have arranged for cars. The driver will drive you wherever you want to go... then uh... four bodyguards will always be around you... you will not cook anything on your own... wait a minute... you will not do anything on your own forget cooking, I have arranged for everything... you will call me three times a day, to say the least and you will answer my call whenever I call that means even if I call at 3 in the morning you will answer my call... I'll tell you the rest as I remember for now that's it" Yash replied.
"you sure that is it... right" Geet raised an eyebrow smiling at Yash.
Yash didn't answer her just looked at her with an expression you-want-more.
"ok now that you are done with your rule book... I have my clauses that will be added to your rule book, which you will have to agree with otherwise I will not talk with you and yes if you feel I am blackmailing you then let me tell you, you are thinking on the right lines I am blackmailing you... so my tiny conditions are like this... let me see... fine I will not use public transport but you will tell the driver to park the car two blocks away from the office building and I will walk the rest of the distance... I am ok with your bodyguards but make sure they stay away from my office; no one should know they are around. Tell them to wait in the parking lot or wherever but they sure as hell are not going to enter my office building. By the way veju, are you sure there are just four" Geet blabbered.
Yash gulped his saliva as he realised his baby sister was smart indeed. But he lied "yes off course I am sure, why I will not be, you see, I hired them. There are only four"
"now coming to phone calls, all that you told me applies to you too, even if I call when you're in the loo you have to receive my call otherwise I will stop calling you. But this washroom condition does not apply on me as I am the younger one and hence I have an advantage coz it's my 'janam sidth adhikar' (birth right)" Geet smirked.
"about cooking, don't worry I don't even know how to make a cup of coffee how do you expect me to cook a full meal so I am more than happy with a cook but I guess learning won't hurt so that means I will try cooking as a time pass... rest I will tell you as I remember them... for now this is it" Geet said as she took a deep breath.
Yash merely nodded and extended his hand forward gesturing her to hold it. She held his hand as he gave her a tour of the villa. Though Geet wanted something simpler she was highly impressed by the interiors of the villa. It was absolutely a replica of her taste. The best part of the house was her room; it was exactly like her room in Handa mansion with soft toys kept here and there, heart shaped pillows on the bed, a wind chime on every window, peach colour plain curtains and a single bed. But more than these things Geet loved the walls of her room, for one simple reason, pictures of her with Yash and grandpa was hung there.
"when did you do all this" Geet asked as she was surprised how Yash managed to do everything within a single day.
"well let's say I am a genius" Yash said with a proud smirk.
"thank you veju... love you" Geet said as she hugged Yash.
"I have something for you"
"what"
"close your eyes"
Geet stomped her foot but closed her eyes anyway.
Yash kept something in her hand as he asked her to open her eyes. It was a blackberry torch 9800.
"veju... what is this... I have a cell; you saw it in Chandigarh. I could have used that, which reminds me where you kept it after that night' Geet said.
"I threw it in the dustbin as I did not like it" Yash replied plainly.
Geet looked at him with an expression that read you-what.
"Shut your mouth if you don't want a fly entering"Yash said as chuckled at her cute face.
"veju... I am supposed to be a junior architect and just for the record junior architects can't afford this model" Geet complained.
"but your Geet Handa and you can afford thousands of such models" Yash replied.
"veju but---
"no more arguments... this is also one of my conditions" Yash said with finality in his tone.
"fine... you and your rule book" Geet replied sarcastically.
"conditions" Yash corrected.
"rule book" Geet stuck her tongue at Yash.
Yash chuckled as he crushed Geet in a bear hug.
Later that evening Yash bid his goodbye to Geet and left for Chandigarh.

As Geet ran across the parking lot under the office building a gust of wind blew her scarf off of her shoulder. Her scarf was blown away by the wind and it landed right on the face of a man who had just got out of his car. Geet hastily ran towards the man to take her scarf as she was getting late for her first day at the office. Just as she stopped in front of the man and extended her hand towards his face to try take away the scarf, the man angrily threw it away and it landed at Geet's feet. She picked it up---
And then---
"YOU" both of them said in unison.
Geet and Maan both fumed seeing each other and at an impulse Geet stomped at Maan's foot banging her heels right into his toe. Maan winced in pain as he moved backward and hit his car.
"what the hell was that?" Maan shouted.
"well that was---
And Geet again stomped at his foot just a little harder this time.
"next time think twice before throwing a girl's duppata" geet said.
"who the hell do you think you are?" maan blasted at the top of his voice.
"whatever... I don't need to tell you" Geet snapped back.
"how dare you stomp at my foot?" Maan roared.
"do you want me to do that again? Believe me I will more than willingly do it"
"shut up"
"that applies to you" Geet said.
"what the hell are you doing here?" Maan shouted yet again.
"none of your business" Geet retorted back.
Maan held her hand in anger.
Geet saw her bodyguards heading towards them, she had to leave from there or else she would definitely land up exposing her identity and Savitri Devi had requested her to keep it hidden. Besides, she herself wanted to maintain a low profile.
She snapped her hand out of his grip as she shot him an angry glare and said "I don't have time to waste arguing with jerks like you"
Just as Maan was about to reply his phone started ringing. By the time he took out the cell phone from his pocket Geet was gone.
He looked around for her but she was nowhere to be seen. Maan banged his hand on the pillar on his right side as the frustration kicked in. He had once again been told off by her and he could do nothing.

Aditya showed Geet her cabin which she was to share with him as she would be working under him for the project. Geet was a junior architect and hence she had to work under an assoc architect and luckily for her she was to work under Aditya and not Sasha. There was a small desk arranged for her in the right corner of the room whereas Aditya's desk was in the left. He told her they would be working together all the time so it would be easier if they remained around each other.
Aditya explained to her about her job "You would develop scale drawings, details, estimates, and specifications of the building from sketches and studies. You would prepare and review estimates and specifications; evaluate and report on site and unit plans, specifications, details, or shop drawings of building construction and equipment; prepare plans and designs. You might also have to perform technical review of consultants' drawings and related details for such factors as compliance with appropriate codes, laws, regulations, and standards, and for functional design features and you might have assist the MD if required, that is, if he likes your work but he will definitely not chose as you're a girl and he prefers working with males"
"adi sir... hope you don't mind me calling you that" Geet said "is the MD gay"
Aditya momentarily lost his balance when Geet spoke that, he almost fell backwards. He straight away looked around to make sure no one heard her. Once sure they were safe he said "Geet don't say that anywhere near him, he will kill you with his bare hands and for the record I have no idea about his sex, male female both I don't know and I don't want to know. Trust me even you don't want to know. All I know is he stays away from women and by the way you can call me Adi sir"
"well adi sir... if he stays away from the opposite gender certainly he is gay" Geet said in a matter-of- fact way.
"Geet please if someone hears you worse MK... you will be dead" Aditya whispered.
"oh... so along with being gay the MD is also a 'Magambo' type person, you know, like the ones everyone is terrified of" Geet replied.
"girl you are something" Aditya frowned at her reply.
"I know that" Geet said with a wide grin.
Aditya and Geet chuckled as they got back to work.

Maan angrily walked towards his cabin and wrenched the door open. He threw his car keys at the desk as he banged his head against his chair. He closed his eyes in frustration but the moment he did that her face flashed in front of him. This girl had been haunting him day in and day out ever since the day he first met her. He hated her mere presence and strangely he could feel her around him in the office and he hated her even more. The scent of her scarf still lingered on his face; he lifted the glass of water from the desk and splashed water on his face in order to get rid of her disgusting smell. Well it was sure as hell not disgusting rather it was intoxicating but he wouldn't admit that to himself. He dismissed her smell like that of a pig... yes... that's right she smelled like a pig. Now that made him feel better, it satisfied his ago at least. He wanted to teach her a lesson. How dare her. After slapping him for no good reason the other day, she had the audacity to stomp at his foot yet again for no good reason forget about good reason she had no reason at all. That just reminded him his foot was in pain. Without thinking what he was doing he took off his shoes followed by his shocks and noticed that his toe was swollen blue. He lifted his leg and placed it over his other knee and touched his toe. Just then Anwesha entered his cabin and she was shell shocked to see the sight in front of her. Maan Singh Khurana was sitting on his chair wearing only one shoe and caressing his toe. Now that was a sight. She looked at him with wide eyes and dropped jaw. Vikrant entered right after her and as he saw what Maan was doing he couldn't stop himself from saying "bro did a rat bite your toe again"
That made Maan realise he was not alone in his cabin and he blasted at Annie and Vicky "what the hell are you doing here"
It was then that Maan remembered Vicky's statement, and that just infuriated him to no end. He was 15 years old when a rat bit his toe while he was hiding in the store room. He hated to be reminded about that day.
He blew a fuse and said "get out of my cabin NOW"
Vikrant and Anwesha were well aware of his anger and therefore without any delay left his cabin. Once in a safe distance from his gaze they threw their heads backwards and started laughing their head off.
After a good laugh they walked towards Aditya's cabin to meet the girl dadi had hired yesterday. Last night Savitri Devi told them all about her and also that she liked the girl for Maan. She'd asked them to go meet her.
And then---
Just as Vikrant was about to enter the cabin Annie pulled him backwards and dragged him to the exit.
"omg... this can't be happening" Annie threw her arms around Vicky as the happiness came over her.
"woo what happened" Vicky asked as he broke out of the hug.
"that's her... the girl from the mall"
"who... the one with Aditya" Vicky inquired.
"yes... yes the same one" Annie said as she controlled her breathing.
"what a co-incidence man. Dadi chose the same girl for bro that we wanted" Vicky was amused.
"looks like even the gods are on our side" Annie said with a slight chuckle.
"I am sure bro hasn't met her yet otherwise he would have chucked her out of the office" Vicky said.
"nah... he cannot do that even if he wants to... remember what dadi said about new clause she asked Aditya to add in her contract but anyway I am also certain he hasn't met her" Annie exclaimed.
"why so" Vicky inquired.
"Geet looked happy and do you really think she would remain happy after meeting bhai" Annie replied.
"you have a point... let's go home and tell dadi" Vicky said as he took Annie's hand to pull her out of the office
'tell her what... you don't want to tell about the mall incident" Annie replied as she pulled her hand d backwards.
Vicky looked at her smirking.
"no... NO..." Annie said as she tossed her head.
"hell yeah" Vicky replied.
"WHY"
"dadi already likes the girl as she sent us here to check her out for bro, she can help us" Vicky said.
With that said they left for the mansion.
