Actually no, we don't have uniforms. The law isn't against any religion : it's about neutrality in school. You're not suppose to show your religious or political beliefs in schools to protect minors from any influence. The law doesn't apply to universities for example because we're dealing with adults who are free to exercise their freedom of religion.
From what I've seen, the ban targets college veiled women in India.
There is no comparison with the French case.
The French form of secular state is different from the one that is in the Indian constitution. Not letting people practice their religion, when it comes to essentials is infringement of basic human rights/ and goes against the constitution as well. Which is why they are debating in court that hijab is m essential to practicing Muslims.
On another note - in India, it’s extremely disrespectful to ask someone to take off turban or head gear off. In Sikhism it’s a part of religion, but covering head is not unique to Sikhism or Islam in general. Punjabi women always covered their head anyways, when you go to a temple, you cover your head
Back in the day, both men and women covered their heads no matter what religion. It was a cultural practice (and in a way has to do with Hinduism as well).
Also, many women get groped, harassed especially while travelling so dressing modestly, and covering up can help them feel safer.
Secondly - there could be other issues while it may actually cause women cause to drop out/ not allowed to study further. If we are talking of upliftment of women in general, it has to be easier for them. Not make it harder than it already is.
Another problem is - taking away freedom to choose. It’s not very different from forcing someone to wear a hijab.
