Rajeev's ramp antics
By: Shaheen Parkar
May 31, 2006

Miffed, but I'm not showing it:
The Left Right Left cast Vikas Maniktala, Shveta Salve, Rajeev Khandelwal, Kunal Kapoor and Priyanka Bassi at the fashion gala
Rajeev Khandelwal sashayed down the ramp for Provogue's new line at a Juhu nightspot recently.

This was part of the launch of the title track of SAB's new show, Left Right Left, which stars Khandelwal, along with Shveta Salve, Priyanka Bassi, and Kunal Kapoor, Produced by Tony and Deeya Singh, this campus life drama has Provogue styling the cast.
Pay me

Immediately after the ramp walk, Khandelwal left the venue, miffed. To begin with, he was clueless about the catwalk. When he realised he was expected to walk the ramp, he wasn't thrilled.

He felt his name was being used to gain mileage for the event. He also made noises saying that, had he known beforehand, he would have asked for a fee, because Provogue was using him for publicity.

Khandelwal refused to comment at first. Later, he said, "Yes, I did leave the venue immediately after the event. Anyway, I am uncomfortable at parties and avoid them.

I was at the event because of the channel and the production house; my presence was solely due to the fact that I am acting in the show. I never asked for a fee. I don't think my name is so big to be used for publicity," says Khandelwal, who also anchors Sony show, Deal Ya No Deal.

Apparently, the deal to showcase the cast with the new line, was finalised between the producers and Provogue. Did the production team inform him?

Says producer Deeya Singh, "I was not in town (her co-producer and husband, Tony Singh, was present at the event) on that day, so I am not aware of this. But it was more of an introduction of the cast along with the title track. They were not walking the ramp technically. But as the ramp was the stage, they had to walk down it."

No 'star' treatment

Apart from the ramp bit, Khandelwal was angry about the backstage treatment. He wasn't given a separate make-up and changing room. According to an eyewitness, "He was extremely peeved that he had to share the make-up room with other models."

Says Khandelwal, "Yes, there were certain shortcomings which I voiced to the channel and the production house. Who else could I air my grievances to? I was there solely because of them."

Public says 'No Deal' to Rajeev
By: Vickey Lalwani
June 5, 2006

Wake-up call:
Rajeev Khandelwal

Sony and Miditech are at their wit's end. What they thought was a smart move, has turned out to be a damaging exercise so far.

Bringing Rajeev Khandelwal (four episodes old now) in place of Mandira Bedi in Deal Ya No Deal has sunk the show to plummeting depths. The TRPs have registered a drastic drop.

According to a source, neither the production house nor the channel are at a loss for words after the costliest anchor on the show made an appearance.

Four weeks ago, Rajeev was asked to anchor the show and the boxes were increased from 22 to 26, thereby increasing the family participation. The brain trust was sure that that the move would pay off, but it backfired.

Says an insider, "Rajeev has not clicked as an anchor. He fails to connect with the audience as much as Mandira or even Madhavan did, and the figures prove that."

Mandy was the best

The source says that Mandira was involved and connected with the audience more than Rajeev. "Of the three (Madhavan, Mandira, Khandelwal), Mandira was the best. She generated a lot of excitement. She would sympathise with the loser and give him a shoulder to cry on.

On the other hand, Rajeev has a very practical approach. If a participant wins 6 lakhs and not 1 crore, he asks them to relax. He seems disconnected from the player. Even Madhavan didn't empathise much with the losers. Maybe it's a show where a woman works better as an anchor."

Sujal, not Rajeev

But what about Rajeev being a heartthrob? Shouldn't that have translated into a large female fan following? The source points out, "That fan following from the opposite sex quarters was probably for his character Sujal and not Rajeev, After all, Sujal was a very romantic, passionate guy in KTH. Women like such characters."

When contacted, Anupama Mandloi (Sony's programming head) said, "When Deal Ya No Deal was telecast from Friday to Sunday, Friday was always a fragile slot. Now, the show is telecast on Fridays only. I don't think it's the issue of who the anchor is. Rajeev is seen as a trend.

Give it some time. The channel is not reacting to the show every week. We are only putting out what we think the viewers will enjoy. You cannot shove something down anybody's throat."

No curiosity

"TAM ratings show that the Friday slot was not so fragile during the Mandira and Madhavan shows. What is even more shocking is that Rajeev (April 28) failed to beat Mandira (January 25) and Madhavan (November 23) in his first episode, when there should have been a curiosity factor, if he's so popular," the source concludes.

Rajeev buys a bicycle!!!

Wait! Before you jump to any conclusion, we would like to tell you, it has nothing to do with the fact that Deal Ya No Deal has not been working for Rajeev. Apna ex-Sujal already owns a racy car. But to comply with his fitness demands, Rajeev has bought a bicycle. So keep your eyes open, you never know, he would be pedaling next to you.

With this feat, Rajeev seems to be the setting a new trend in tellydom, where TV actors prefer to splurge on houses and cars to add to their lifestyle. Bollywood has unka Salman Khan who is regularly spotted in the by lanes of suburban Mumbai, riding a cycle in order to be fit.

Imagine Rajeev signing to Aamna, 'chandi ki cycle, sone ki seat, aao chale darling, chale double seat! And what if it rains?? Sone pe suhaga ….

"Being beautiful is possessing qualities that delight the senses"

She's known more for her noodle starps and designer saris than for her histrionic skills - this star anchor knows not only how to dress, but also has the right attitude and oodles of charm to carry off any garment in style! Her transformation from the curly haired Shanti to the present day sleek and elegant looking Mandira Bedi has taken the entertainment industry by surprise - and a pleasant one at that!Mandira 'bindaas' Bedi spoke to Sameera Kapoor about her fashion fundas.

What's being beautiful and stylish mean to you?
Well, to me being stylish is wearing clothes that suits me, which I can carry off with the right attitude. It's not necessary that what is in vogue should suit you. Being beautiful is possessing qualities that delight the senses, especially the sense of sight.

What has inspired changes in your sense of style since your Shanti days?
It's been a gradual process. But the turning point was the world cup event. I was hosting the show Extraa Innings for Setmax. It's during the telecast of the show that my clothes came into the limelight. It was not intentional. Even before the show I did wear saris. Perhaps the kind of environment that I wore them led to garner huge publicity. But it was also the channel's idea to give the show a different feel of not being formal so that wider mass could be lured to watch the show.

Besides saris you are most comfortable wearing....
It has to be jeans- a well fitting jeans is my all time favorite.

From were do you get these stylish saris?
For trendy and swank occasions I choose to wear creations by Satyapaul, while for a traditional look I love collections of Ritu Kumar. Besides these two I often buy saris from Dadri an upcoming brand name in Delhi, designed by two young girls.

What about jewellery....
I get them designed from Mariam Khan, Shaheen Abaaz, and Vrinda, she creates beautiful designs from paper. Besides these few names, my evergreen place for purchasing jewellery has been the Silver House in Colaba. I have been buying my stuff from them when I was a mere 13 year old kid.

The most costly dress that you possess...
The most costly dress that I possess was gifted to me by the Dadri girls. It is a sari which these two girls had designed and it costs around Rs.1,50,000. I wore it for the photo shoot for Femina's cover page.

The cheapest thing that you have ever got hold of....
It has to be the Nike T-shirts in which the word Nike was written in gold. This I bought from Australia at the Nike ware house which were really cheap.

What are the staples of an elegantly chic wardrobe?
According to me a golden, silver and transparent shoes are a must have, accompanied with matching handbags. For they go along with any kind of apparels. A fitting pair of blue jeans is an essential stuff in your wardrobe. For it would go with long, short kurtas or shirts. And obviously perfectly tailored spaghetti blouses is a must have.

What about skirts...
Well, right now I am not that into skirts. It's been worn by everyone and can be seen everywhere. So right now skirts do not come into my list of must haves.

Favorite shopping destination...
There are many places were I like to go shopping. However Odel showroom in Sri Lanka comes first in my mind. In Mumbai Barefoot is my favorite shopping zone. While I am abroad I like to shop in Thailand, Singapore…

Any particular brand that you vouch for...
I am not that brand conscious. The criteria which I follow while buying any dress is that they must fit me well and look smart when I wear them. Thus it need not be from any brand. But if I were to buy something brand oriented then brand name Guess tops my mind.

Your style icon? And why?
Dimple Kapadia and John Abraham. While Dimple is the evergreen 70's beauty wereas John has great personality. Besides how can one not mention Amitabh Bachchan.

'I'll never do a reality show'

TV actor Rajeev Khandelwal says he doesn't want to bow down before judges and wait for them to decide his fate.

There's buzz that actors Rajeev Khandelwal and Aamna Shariff were approached for Star One's reality show Nach Baliye 2, but they refused.

However, Rajeev clarifies that he was not approached by anybody and even if he was, he wouldn't do it. "That's because I'm not comfortable participating in a reality show. I'm not against reality shows, just that I can't compete for money. It's a block that I have. I do not want to bow down before three judges who will decide my fate. With due respect to judges and participants of all reality shows, I'd like to emphasise that I'm only talking for myself. What others feel is their prerogative. Each to his own,"he says.

So is it fear of losing that's prompting this stand? "Not at all. While I was in college, I participated in a number of competitions. Now, I'm not comfortable with the thought of celebrities competing."

But, he recently anchored the game show Deal Ya No Deal? "Yes, I'm fine anchoring these shows,"says Rajeev, who's still known as the original Sujal of Kahiin To Hoga, a show he quit last year. He is currently seen in Left Right Left.

They lived to tell the tale...

Television baroness Ektaa Kapoor's life-script almost went for a toss when, while travelling to Manali, her car nearly rammed into an oncoming bus on a hilly road. "In those few seconds, I saw my whole life flash in front of me," she shudders. Sonu Nigam went through this hit-miss trauma twice — once when a bomb went off in a car behind him in Pakistan and then when a stage collapsed in Afghanistan. Sonu values this 'rebirth'. "All my days after April 2004 are a bonus," he says

Mandira Bedi shudders at the thought of the severe asthma attack she suffered this January in Bangalore. She says, "The air in Bangalore has lots of pollen. It left me desperately gasping for oxygen. My parents were on a flight and Raj's (her husband) phone was switched off. While the driver rushed me to the hospital, for a split-second I felt that I wouldn't see my family again."

Having lived in Punjab, Divya Dutta has witnessed terrorism at close quarters. But her most haunting memory is of a different place. "I was in Kashmir with my family when suddenly a group of people came running and told us that terrorists were killing people. We took refuge in a police station for four hours. I never went to Kashmir again."
Know the reason for Madhur Bhandarker's hydrophobia? When he was 14, Madhur jumped into a pool and slipped into deep waters — and he didn't know how to swim! He recalls, "I lost control and began gasping. But something pulled me up. I screamed loudly and was helped."

When director Sanjay Gupta met with an accident, he knew about his critical condition. He recalls, "My ribs were broken, my spleen ruptured but my spirit was intact. What doesn't break you, makes you. I was always close to God but after this I've grown closer to friends and family." Sometimes life does offer a second chance.

Close encounters

Nine-year-old Rohit Roy rolled down a hill in Kashmir when he climbed up to gather flowers for his mother.
  • Preity Zinta had a close brush with death twice — once when a bomb exploded at a show in Sri Lanka and then when she slept through the tsunami in Phuket.

Star and Sony in a dance off
By: Shaheen Parkar
August 3, 2006

Sachin and Supriya, the winners of last season's Nach Baliye
The battle lines have been drawn, and it's a clarion call for war. Star and Sony will clash for supremacy in viewership ratings, as both TV giants are slated to begin similar dance-based shows starting September.

While Star One will host a new season of last year's big draw Nach Baliye, Sony will host Jhalak Dikhlaja (based on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, more popularly known as Dancing With The Stars in America).

'Me too' attitude

While Nach Baliye boasts of a couple (who are not professional dancers) vying for the top spot, Jhalak Dikhlaja pairs a celebrity with a professional dancer or choreographer. Both shows have the couple attempting to win the top spot by scoring the highest points in every round. The couple with the lowest score is eliminated in every round.

Over the weekend, both channels went into overdrive planning their shows. While Sony made a formal announcement of their show, which would air in September, Star One swung into action announcing the second season of Nach Baliye (also in September).

Says Deepak Sehgal, executive vice-president, content and communications, Star India, "Nach Baliye will be back on air for a new season beginning September.

The show promises to bring back the fun, excitement and nail-biting tension of the previous season with a whole lot of surprises thrown in. In fact, the couples will be revealed in a unique manner by mid-August."

Adds Anupama Mandloi, programming head, Sony, "Jhalak Dikhlaja will roll next month or even end of August. We will announce the names of participants next week."

Name dropping

At the moment, both channels are in a tizzy pencilling in names for the respective shows. It is learnt that Star One has short listed 25 names (see box alongside), while Sony is also in talks with several choreographers.
Jhalak Dikhlaja is being produced by Siddharth Basu's Synergy Communications, along with the Singapore-based Theatre Red.

Says Basu, "The BBC show Strictly Come Dancing is the mother show. Jhalak Dikhlaja is based on it. It has a trained dancer with a non-professional dancer as a partner. In the West, they have had participants from various fields, even sports. Soccer legend Diego Maradona has also been on the show."

Out of 25 couples, the channel has short-listed the following names

Anuradha Patel and
Kanwaljeet Singh
Kiran
and
Chhaya Karmarkar
Renuka Shahane
and
Ashutosh Rana
Rajeev Khandelwal
and Aamna Shariff
Achint Kaur
and
Mohan Kapoor
Ronit Roy
and
Neelam
Hiten Tejwani
and Gauri Pradhan

Nach meri bulbul, paisa milega!

But not as much as last year; prize money for Nach Baliye
this season is pittance, say stars

Tushar Joshi
[email protected]

After from making the nation dance to their tunes, the stars of last season's Nach Baliye went dancing straight to the bank.

Last year's participants were reportedly paid Rs 16 lakh per couple, in addition to Rs 5 lakh for every round they cleared. But this year, the prize money is far from appealing to most couples that have been approached for the show.

Says an insider, "This season's prize money isn't as much as what was given last year. The payoff for clearing each stage is Rs 3 lakh, compared to 5 lakh last year."

Understandably, there's a lot of bargaining going on between the stars and the channel.

"The stars want to cash in on the craze and aren't scared of asking for more money.

Except for some actors from the older generation like Kanwaljeet, all the other actors are working on one or more daily show. So if they're earning Rs 30-40,000 a day, they won't settle for less here."

Rajiv Khandelwal sports new image
IANS
Monday, August 14, 2006

Television actor Rajiv Khandelwal has gone in for an image change with his new serial "Left Right Left", where he plays a Captain in an army academy. The serial, which is aired weekdays on Sony/Sab channel, is the actor's first daily soap in more than a year. He last shot for "Kahiin To Hoga" on May 18, 2005.

Said Rajiv:"'Left Right Left' takes me as far away from 'Kahiin To Hoga' as possible. I'm blessed because people haven't forgotten me though I haven't been that visible on TV. I wanted to break the myth about TV stars being forgotten. And I didn't vanish entirely. I did a weekly series 'Time Bomb' for six months. Then I did a cameo in 'ID', a music video and 'Deal Ya No Deal' on Sony."

When asked if audiences would identify him only as Sujal of "Kahiin To Hoga", he said people knew him best as Rajiv. "Sujal as a character remains alive because I played him for two years every day, but people don't address me as Sujal any more."

Rajiv said that "Kahiin To Hoga" not only brought him stardom but also helped him grow as a human being. "I stepped out of that world and stepped into a real world.'Kahiin To Hoga' turned me into a superstar. As a person, I'm equipped to take on any challenge now."

The actor turned down Sony's supernatural thriller "Akela", which is also on air now, because he did not want to essay any more tense characters and he feels Sudhanshu Pande is apt for the part.

"When I heard the narration, I felt there was no vision beyond the first four episodes and I didn't want to do horror. After Sujal, I didn't want to play another tense unsmiling character. But when I saw the first episode, I knew the makers of 'Akela' had a winner on their hands and Sudhanshu Pande looks apt for the part. I couldn't have done such a good job."

Getting back to "Left Right Left", Rajiv said he was hooked immediately after the producers Deeya and Tony Singh called.

"After Ekta Kapoor, if there's anyone I wanted to work with it was Tony and Deeya. I come from an army background, and I'm playing an army-man in 'Left Right Left'. When I heard the story I said 'this sounds too good'. Of course, I had my doubts. We can never depict the army absolutely authentically. I'd describe 'Left Right Left' as very subtle humour in uniform."

Rajiv however clarified that this serial isn't based on the Indian Army. "No TV serial can afford to depict the army. It's about an academy that motivates cadets to join the army. We've designed the visuals with great care and the cadets got actually trained. I play Captain Rajvir Singh and I love it."

"Left Right Left" will take up only 18 days each month but Rajiv says he won't do any other serial simultaneously, as he wants audiences to know him by just one character at a time.

Meanwhile, the popular actor denies reports of his high-handed behaviour while anchoring the game show "Deal Ya No Deal".

"My high-handedness was news to me. I was supposed to have been smoking without permission during shooting. That's what I call smoke without fire. No one on the sets was allowed to smoke and I don't need to defend myself further."

Rajiv added that he is not bothered by failure. "In one year I've done all kinds of stuff. I failed with 'Deal Ya No Deal'. Sony expected a miracle but I couldn't save a sinking show. But at least I tried. I'm happy as long as the people working with me are happy.

On his long-term plans, he said he would be focusing on television throughout the year. "At the year-end, I'll take a serious look at a career in cinema."
