*About the plight of Residents in connection with Kolkata incidence*
The real issue for the 1 month long agitation of Resident doctors is *not* just the Justice to Dr Abhaya and punishment of the criminals, it is much more.
Residents in their Residency go through a *life of Hell!* Pathetic accommodation of the Residents, long hrs of duty (no other staff in any hospital works for more than 8 hrs, then why residents are forced to work for 36 hrs), torture by seniors, inadequate rest room facilities especially for women doctors etc.
Actually, PG students are *students*. Why they are used as *Workers*? They are *not a staff* like others, so labour law facilities are also not available to them. Actually Govt should appointment *full time Medical Officers/Consultants*, round-the-clock, just like Nurses/wardboy/Ayas/Pharmacists/Lab or xray technicians. But, the *age-old practice of slavery by British* is still borne by Residents. *Govt is saving huge money* by forcing students to work, that also in *inhumane way*, without any limitation over duty hours. In no other field like Engineering, Architect, CA, Lawyers, post graduates are treated in this way!
Residents have come for studies and should be given maximum time for studies. Like Practicals, they can examine and operate the patient. But, *forcing them for labour work is gross injustice!* This fact has to be brought to the kind attention of Hon Courts and Govt.
