Yes, there is distrust and there are divisions between Hindus and Muslims but it is absurd to pin the blame on BJP. Clashes and divisions between these two groups predate the partition of 1947, predate the colonial period and go all the way back to the medieval period when periods of harmony and cooperation were followed by periods of conflict and tension depending on who was in power. The British also exacerbated the communal tensions with their divide and rule strategy.
Let's not forget that INC figures like Gandhi and Nehru advocated for a united India while the Muslim league pushed for the creation of a separate Muslim state. They vehemently argued that Muslims and Hindus were distinct nations, with their own customs, religion, and traditions, and should have separate states!
Remember the Direct Action Day by All India Muslim League? The Calcutta killings in 1946?
Invasions, asking for and getting a separate nation, terrorist attacks...you think all this contributes to unity?
Even assuming one party is responsible for Hindu Muslim divisions, who is responsible for the divisions amongst Hindus? Who is benefiting from the division of all the jatis and varnas? Kammas, Reddys, Kapus, Gounders, Nadars, Chettiars, Marathas, Kunbis, Bhandaris, Jats, Khatris, Aroras, Kayasthas, Baidyas, Mahishyas, Yadavas, Maligas..definitely not BJP right? Doesn't it want all Hindus to be united as one voting block for survival? Why is it not getting it then? Who / which party is exploiting the Hindu divide?
Pure Hatred? How about we go with "Hindus love Muslims as much as Muslims love Hindus"? All we need to establish then is who loves who more

With the amount of hatred they have spread in India, it is sad that BJP won another term. It is not shocking though, because India is a very diverse country and it is easy to divide and rule. We sadly are at a phase where we don't see humans as humans, we see them based on religion.
ya, too bad the Hindu community is divided. Next time they should too vote as a bloc like a certain community, no? By the way, I think it is very communal for people of a certain community to vote as a bloc. It also shows how brainwashed they are when they all line up a certain way. Not good. Then they ask for representation and vikas, when all they do is oppose...
BJP won because it has a record of sound fiscal management and economic growth, good governance, strong defense and strong foreign policy. Congress freebie policies would have bankrupted the country. Anyway, too bad some people can't handle BJP winning.
I agree we have had multiple riots, invasion etc in India. You just mentioned that Britishers did the same so are you saying the current govt should do it too? BJP has normalised the hatred which was probably there in the society even before they came into power.
Do you think that something is right just because it has been happening for a long time? Caste based atrocities has been happening since a long time, does that mean that it is something the ruling govt should support? Is it not govt's responsibility to uplift the marginalised caste so that the differences are removed between different castes? How is it different from what is happening in religious context?
Every time we discuss about current govt, we go back to 1940/50s I really do not understand the reasoning behind this. We have so much more facilities and opportunity to educate ourselves right now, why can we not progress as a society?
Regarding the Hindu voter division. Tbh I do not understand how Hindu voter division is something which can show that BJP is not dividing the society? Casteism is still prevalent in the society, if you check the demographic of voters who voted this time, you will see that majority of minorities have not voted for BJP. BJP does want Hindu voters but will hate speeches help the poor become richer? Hindu people who are not voting for BJP are not doing it because of BJP's politics.
I do not think you need to love Muslims or Hindus. Just love people who you love. Majority of the people just don't want the hatred and discrimination based on religion/caste. You do not have to love someone to treat them with respect and dignity.
arre yaar, simple point you missed is we had more communal riots and tension in India during the UPA years. You can easily pull up the statistics on the net. Congress has been big daddy of communalism. If anything, BJP has been for sabka saath, sabka vikas. Too bad the opposition keeps injecting ways to carve out reservations and quotas along different caste and religious lines to divide society. Not nice

I studied in a school that had homam pooja every Friday and it was compulsory for every student to attend & chant shlokas. If religion shouldn’t be mixed with education (which I strongly believe in) why weren’t such practices also banned along with banning hijab? In a country like India where education of girls is such uphill task, this kind of diktats is inhuman - coming as it does from pure hatred & not really out of any progressive thought.
chanting shlokas is good for you... like yoga. Is it compulsory to oppose everything that is good just because those practices and customs come from the Hindu community?
also, there's a difference between shoving religion down people's throat at the point of a sword and chanting shlokas that don't require you to be a believer.
Wearing hijabs can be a security as well as hygiene issue. I also dont know how much it is based on religion, and how much it's something dictated by the mullah police. In same vein, I dont necessarily subscribe to many things the pandus of Hinduism prescribe. We need to get out of that mentality...

There were multiple instances of hate speech against minorities, why would they vote for BJP after that?
@bold 1% hold the vast majority of wealth out of around 1.5 billion people. Do you think everyone is privileged enough to not need "freebies"?.
You are right, I would rather have any other party than BJP but I do think that it will take time for BJP to go out of power because we are a diverse country and hatred is easily sown.
What do you mean we had more communal riots during congress. Are you taking 10 years of congress and 10 years of BJP rule or are you taking the entire congress period of governance and 10 years of BJP? How are you equating this. And just for your information, I am left leaning so congress is not my first preference but I would definitely prefer it over BJP. BJP has multiple issues under their current tenure. Since they are in power now, they are being criticised.Originally posted by: CuckooCutter7

Reservations and quotas are there because of the discrimination in the society. I do not see how that is dividing the society? How do you uplift marginalised communities without reservations and/or quotas? The poor need the "freebies" you mentioned. Govt is supposed to provide for its own people. The 1% who hold the wealth are should be taxed more so that the gap between rich and poor is less.
come on, bud, you cant seriously be for all that leftist socialist communist crap. This is the 21st century! That's the system that brought USSR to it's knees. It's been bankrupting various states. It just leads to low growth rates that perpetuate economic misery for generations. Just see India's own experience in that regard. Commie states like west bengal have become waste baskets. Not nice for anyone to still be smoking that chillum.
and I am adjusting for the fact that the UPA/ congress has been in power for some 60 years whereas NDA has been around for 15 years. Seen in that light, even on a per-year basis, the congress has been big daddy of communalism. As for other leftist parties, they have been as bad when it comes to anti-social anti-nation activities. Just look at the level of poll violence in west bengal and kerala to see that- you got a lot of intolerance there.
