The keeper who became CEO

Births of Dave Richardson, Asanka Gurusinha and Micky Stewart

Dave Richardson wasn't a bad wicketkeeper but is probably best known for his tenure as head of the ICC PA Photos

1959
One of South Africa's best Test wicketkeepers is born. In his 42 Tests David Richardson collected 152 dismissals. South Africa's reliance on pace bowling meant that only two of them were stumpings. In fact he took 120 catches before stumping Venkatesh Prasad off the bowling of Paul Adams at Newlands in 1996-97. A more than useful batter, Richardson scored nine Test fifties as well as a century, against New Zealand in Cape Town again, in 1994-95. In his next Test, against Pakistan in Johannesburg, he made a king pair, a minor blip in a highly successful career. In January 2002 he became the ICC's first general manager, and a decade later its chief executive.

1966
A mainstay of Sri Lanka's Test batting is born. With his bushy black beard and solid play, Asanka Gurusinha was one of the most recognisable figures in world cricket for a decade. The biggest of his seven Test centuries was 143 in Melbourne in 1995-96, and he was just as good at the one-day game. He scored two ODI hundreds and played a big part in Sri Lanka's World Cup win, in which he averaged 51.16 and hit two 80s. His 65 in the final provided valuable support for Aravinda de Silva's match-winning hundred. Gurusinha later fell out with the Sri Lankan board and went to live in Australia, the country he'd helped beat in that 1996 final.

1988
Restored to the captaincy, Javed Miandad proved yet again what a master batter he was, by hitting 211 against Australia in Karachi. After putting on 196 with Shoaib Mohammad (94), he declared at 469 for 9. Australia, dismissed for 165 and 116, lost by an innings and 188. It was the fifth of Javed's six Test double-centuries.

1932
Birth of an England team manager whose son played in the team. Micky Stewart, who was born today, played in eight Tests himself, hitting 86 against Pakistan at Headingley in 1962 and 87 at Old Trafford in an otherwise disappointing series against West Indies in 1963. In his last Test, in Bombay in 1963-64, he caught dysentery at tea and couldn't bat. He's better known as a team manager whose partnership with captain Graham Gooch produced a strict regime that wasn't especially successful. And for being Alec's dad.

1987
A New Zealand double-international is born. Suzie Bates represented her country in basketball at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, but has stuck with cricket after she was appointed New Zealand cricket captain in 2011. She started out in 2006 as a teenaged allrounder, and was a key member of the side that reached the 2009 World Cup final. She was the player of the tournament in the next edition, in 2013, and the following year was voted the ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year. The most prolific run-maker in women's T20I cricket, Bates also holds the top two spots on the list of biggest innings by New Zealand women in T20Is.

2018
An unbeaten 68 by Colin Munro brought Trinbago Knight Riders their third CPL title when they beat Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final, in Tarouba. The match was a bit of a New Zealand special: Luke Ronchi made a brisk 44 for Warriors before Brendon McCullum opened TKR's innings with a quick 39, setting the stage for Munro to finish things off. Warriors finished bridesmaids for the fourth time in the tournament's six-year history.

1974
Birth of that modern rarity, a Scottish World Cup hero. Although Scotland lost all five matches in the 1999 tournament, one player stood out. Allrounder Gavin Hamilton, who was born today, made their only two fifties - 76 v Pakistan and 63 not out v Bangladesh - and a defiant 24 out of 68 all out v West Indies. He scored 217 runs in the tournament, more than any England batter could manage. After all that, Test cricket was a bit of rude awakening. In his only match for England, in Johannesburg in 1999-2000, Hamilton made a pair and took 0 for 63 in 15 overs. County cricket applied some balm to the wound: in 2001 he helped Yorkshire win the Championship for the first time since 1968.

1996
The first ODI in Canada was played between India and Pakistan. But despite the sizeable South Asian expat population in Toronto, only 750 turned up for the rain-interrupted game, according to the Wisden Almanack. Sachin Tendulkar delighted those who did with a run-a-ball 89 to help beat Pakistan by eight wickets. Azhar Mahmood made his one-day debut for Pakistan in the match.

1885
The birth of one of that small band who played both cricket and football for England, and Dick Young was even more exceptional in that he wore glasses when playing both sports. His two Tests came at either end of the series against Australia in 1907-08, and he played intermittently as an amateur for Sussex for almost 20 years.

2010
Nottinghamshire won the County Championship after 23 years. On the final day of their match against Lancashire, needing to secure six bonus points to pull level with Somerset at the top of the table - and squeeze ahead by virtue of winning seven games to Somerset's six in the season - Notts edged their way to the 400 runs required to secure a vital fifth batting point: the tenth-wicket pair of Darren Pattinson and Ryan Sidebottom put together 10 runs in 5.1 overs fraught with tension. Adam Voges' century earlier in the day had put Notts in a position to go after the required target. The first three days had been badly affected by rain, and only 94.2 overs were bowled in the match.

Prince of the Golden Age

Birth of the inventor of the leg glance

Ranjitsinhji strides into The Oval, circa 1912

India-born Ranji played 15 Tests for England β€’

1872

No one ever batted quite like Ranjitsinhji, who was born today. Words like "exotic", "princely" and "eastern magic" are easy to bandy about, but it's understandable: this was an Indian prince whose batting was a captivating mixture of flexibility, timing and grace. Even Mark Waugh has never glanced the ball off his middle stump the same way. Ranji scored heavily as well as prettily: on his debut for England, against Australia at Old Trafford in 1896, he scored 62 and 154 not out. He made ten centuries and headed the national averages that season. He also scored a century in his first Test in Australia, 175 in Sydney in 1897-98, the highest score for England at the time. His partnerships for Sussex with the equally classical CB Fry were among the reasons this was known as the Golden Age of batting. India's domestic first-class championship went on to be named after him. All in all, not bad for someone who played a summer sport while suffering from hay fever.

1986

Opinion was divided about Geoff Boycott's running between the wickets. He probably thought it was fine; others weren't quite so sure. So it was appropriate enough that his last first-class innings ended in a run-out. On a Scarborough pitch of uneven bounce, he was his usual watchful self, making 61 in Yorkshire's only innings of a drawn match with Northants. He finished with 48,426 first-class runs at 56.83, the highest average among batters who scored over 30,000.

1948

Of the batters who scored over 25,000 runs, only Don Bradman's average of 95.14 is higher than Geoff Boycott's. To no one's surprise, the Don added a small fraction to it by scoring 153 in his last first-class innings in England, for the Australians against HDG Leveson-Gower's XI in Scarborough. He shared a stand of 225 with Sid Barnes before the rain-affected match ended in a draw.

2023

The second WCPL title went to Barbados Royals, who beat Guyana Amazon Warriors in Tarouba by eight runs. Two players stood head and shoulders above for Royals - their captain, Hayley Matthews, who made 82 opening the batting and took two wickets, and Aussie import legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington, who took four, kicking Guyana's legs out from under them at the tail end of their chase. Three of Wellington's wickets came in the 19th over, two stumped and one caught, by keeper Rashada Williams - who also made 36 in Royals' total.

1970

One of Australia's most successful captains and opening batters was born. Belinda Clark led Australia to victory in the 1997 World Cup, during which she became the first player, man or woman, to hit a double-century in one-day international cricket. Her 229 against the hapless Danes in Mumbai helped Australia score 412 for 3. They batted for more overs than Denmark scored runs. All out for 49, they lost by a preposterous 363 runs. She also guided Australia to the 2005 World Cup trophy, but then captained the side in England, where they lost the Ashes for the first time in more than 40 years. Clark then retired to take up a managing position at Cricket Australia's Centre of Excellence in Brisbane.

2021

The fifth Test of the Pataudi Trophy was called off about an hour and a half before play was due to start on day one at Old Trafford, due to fears of a potential Covid outbreak in the India side. Their assistant physio, Yogesh Parmar, had returned a positive test two days before; the playing squad themselves tested negative on the eve of the game. India's lead physio was already in isolation, along with their bowling coach and fielding coach, all of whom were identified as having been close contacts of coach Ravi Shastri, who had tested positive earlier. The two boards agreed the match was postponed and not cancelled altogether.

2019

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Jamaica Tallawahs slugged it out in a CPL runfest to make statisticians rejoice, producing the second highest successful chase in T20 cricket. Six fiend Chris Gayle featured prominently, lashing 116 at the top of the order, with ten sixes; 37 were hit in the match overall, a record. For Patriots, Evin Lewis responded with the fastest CPL fifty, off 17 balls. Either side of him, Devon Thomas and Laurie Evans made 112 together, off 60 balls. In the end it didn't matter that Carlos Brathwaite made zero: Patriots won, and the match produced 483 runs between the two teams.

1986

England ODI captain Eoin Morgan, born today, gained initial recognition with a one-day hundred for Ireland in the World Cricket League. His performances for Middlesex in the 2008 T20 Cup earned him a call-up to the England squad, and he impressed in South Africa the following winter. After a successful World T20, which England won, Morgan got a surprise Test call-up against Bangladesh and scored his maiden hundred in his third Test, against Pakistan. In 2011, he became the second player after Kepler Wessels to captain against his old team - Ireland in this case, in an ODI in Dublin. Known for his audacious strokeplay, he became one of England's best finishers. He took over the one-day captaincy from Alastair Cook before the 2015 World Cup, and after another disastrous England campaign, set about transforming the side into a winning machine, the culmination of which was their winning the 2019 World Cup

1989

Birth of Manish Pandey, who was just 19 and playing his fourth innings in the tournament when he made the first century in the IPL by an Indian - 114 not out against Deccan Chargers in Centurion in 2009. Pandey made his ODI debut in 2015 with 71 against Zimbabwe away, and starred with a hundred in a big winning chase against Australia in Sydney early the following year. He made four other fifties in white-ball internationals, all away from home over the next five years before the selectors began to look past him. In domestic cricket, Pandey has been a stalwart for Karnataka, making over 6500 runs for them in his first 16 years there.

2004

The USA's first ODI, in the Champions Trophy. And they lost by 210 runs. Nathan Astle (145 not out) and Craig McMillan (64 not out) smashed 13 sixes between them, following which, after a promising start with 52 for the first wicket, USA were rocked by Jacob Oram (5 for 36) and ended up losing nine wickets for 85 runs.

1978

Playing for National Bank against Punjab in Lahore, future Test wicketkeeper Taslim Arif became the first from Pakistan to effect ten dismissals in a first-class match. Punjab were dismissed for 74 and 143 and lost by an innings. Taslim's haul remained a national record until Wasim Yousoufi made 11 dismissals for Peshawar v Bahawalpur in Peshawar in 1997-98.

A thriller at The Oval

Gavaskar takes India agonisingly close

Sunil Gavaskar plays the flick, England v India, The Oval, September 1979

Sunil Gavaskar made 221 at The Oval in 1979

1979

πŸ’•πŸ’‹Needing a record 438 to win the Oval Test, India came frustratingly close. Sunil Gavaskar batted superbly for 221 - then the highest by an Indian against England - and added 153 with Dilip Vengsarkar at more than a run a minute. but Gavaskar fell when India needed 49 off 7.4 overs. Ian Botham, who dismissed Gavaskar, took two more and ran-out a third, leaving India needing 15 off the last over. They finished on 429 for 8, just nine runs short. The draw gave England the series 1-0.

1971

One of the most punishing allrounders in modern cricket is born. Lance Klusener made his mark at Test level, especially in 1996-97, when he hit an unbeaten 102 against India at Newlands, and took 8 for 64 in Calcutta. But he'll probably be best remembered for his performances in the 1999 World Cup, when he won four Player-of-the-Match awards. Only an excruciating defeat by Australia kept South Africa out of the final - and Big Lance almost won that semi-final, hitting consecutive boundaries to level the score. Dismissed only twice in the tournament, he ended it with a batting average of 140.50 as well as taking 5 for 21 against Kenya. Four years later, though, in the World Cup at home, Klusener had a rather less successful time. His eight-ball 1 against Sri Lanka was largely blamed for the tie that dumped South Africa out of the Super Six.

1947

Playing for Middlesex at Lord's, Denis Compton took yet another century off the touring South Africans in his golden summer. This hundred was statistically the most significant: his 17th of the season, breaking the record set by Jack Hobbs in 1925. Compton finished the year with 18, a mark that still stands.

2000

When Courtney Walsh walked to the wicket at The Oval to play his last Test innings in England, Nasser Hussain's team formed a guard of honour for him. Not long afterwards, they took part in a rather less formal celebration. Walsh's last Test duck, lbw to Dominic Cork, gave England the match by 158 runs. It was their first series victory against West Indies since 1969.

1939

One of the great wicketkeeper-batters is born. Denis Lindsay was a vital member of South Africa's strong Test teams in the second half of the 1960s. He had a tremendous time against Australia in 1966-67, taking 24 catches and hitting 606 runs, the most by a wicketkeeper in any Test series. He started as he went on, scoring 69 and 182 to win the opening Test in Johannesburg, following that with 137 and 131 in the third and fourth Tests. Recalled against the same opponents in 1969-70, he scored 43 and 60 in a 323-run win in Port Elizabeth, South Africa's last match before their worldwide ban.

1962

Birth of another class act behind the stumps. Talented and talkative, Kiran More made 130 dismissals in his 49 Tests for India. Against West Indies in Madras in 1987-88, he made five stumpings in an innings and six in the match, Test records that still stand. His highest Test score was 73 against New Zealand in Napier in 1989-90. He served as the BCCI's chairman of selectors from 2003 to 2006, and joined the ICL as an executive director in 2007.

1965

Those who didn't believe Geoff Boycott could cut it as a one-day batter had to contend with his 146 against Surrey at Lord's. Yorkshire won this Gillette Cup decider by the superfluous margin of 175 runs. Brian Close claimed some credit for upping Sir Geoffrey's run rate in the match, but try telling Boycott that.

1979

The birth of Haidee Tiffen, one of the best allrounders in women's cricket. She made her New Zealand debut at the age of 19 and was part of New Zealand's victorious World Cup campaign on home soil in 2000. She also led her side to the 2009 World Cup final in Australia, where they lost to England by four wickets, bowing out of the game after the tournament. In 2015, Tiffen was named New Zealand Women's head coach.

1925

Jack Hobbs made the 15th of his centuries in the year, as captain of the Players at Scarborough. He carried his bat in making 266, which remained the highest score in the Gentlemen v Players fixture, which ran from 1806 to 1962.

1976

Lancashire made their sixth appearance in seven Gillette Cup finals, losing for only the second time (they won in 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1975). Clive Lloyd, who appeared in all four of their winning sides, was captaining the touring West Indians this time - and an injury to Barry Wood depleted Lancashire's batting and bowling. Despite 26 runs in an over by David Hughes, they made only 195 and lost to Northants by four wickets.

1955

One of South Africa's fastest bowlers is born. The worldwide ban cost big Garth Le Roux a Test career, but he emerged as a surprise star of World Series Cricket matches in the late 1970s, matching Lillee, Roberts and Holding bouncer for bouncer. He played in 15 unofficial Tests for South Africa and unnerved a few county batters in his appearances for Sussex. He took 81 wickets at 19.53 in 1981
