Probable Best Performers

Probable Best Batter: Gulbadin Naib

Gulbadin Naib has been in scintillating form with the bat in 2024. In four innings, he has scored 132 runs at an average of 44 and a strike rate of 159.03. Naib scored two fifties in the three-match T20I series against India in January. The right-handed batter smashed a 30-ball 69 in Afghanistan's warm-up match against Scotland. If he gets going at the top, Uganda bowlers will be in for a nightmare.

Probable Best Bowler: Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan had his least productive IPL season, as he failed to make an impact in most of the matches. However, there is no doubting the class of the talismanic leg-spinner. Rashid will be looking to unleash his bag of tricks against the inexperienced Uganda batters and get his campaign off to a bright start.

A red-letter day in Ugandan sporting history. The day their men's team will play its first senior World Cup game (across formats), and nothing will ever take this away from them. Uganda, though, will want more. Maybe something like, dare we say it, a victory. To further adorn this historic moment, and give those back in Uganda a tale to reminisce about for generations and generations.

Up against them are Afghanistan, who, rather poetically and perhaps as a beacon of inspiration to Uganda, have been through a similar journey, having undergone the transformation from being outsiders at ICC events to genuine dark horses. And on the back of last year's ODI World Cup display, they will want to make a mark here. A statement that resonates across the globe and proclaims their readiness to go deep into the T20 World Cup, like their talent and ambition has always threatened.

Two teams that may have slightly different tournament objectives, but two sides whose short-term goals dovetail towards two points. A sojourn of hope, of possibilities, of the pursuit of something tangible for their past experiences for Afghanistan. For Uganda, a first step into promised land. A fantasy foray that is now their reality, and one they hope will be their reality in years to come.

The likes of Rashid, Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Noor Ahmad will bring their experience from having played in tournaments like the IPL. Uganda Bank on experience Uganda led by Brian Masaba, on the other hand, also come into the tournament with plenty of experience in the squad despite qualifying for the T20 World Cup for the very first time. The 43-year-old Frank Nsubuga aside, the squad also features Alpesh Ramjani, who was one of the nominees for the 2023 ICC Men's T20I cricketer of the Year. They secured a spot by comfortably defeating Rwanda in their last match of the Africa region qualifier. Form of Afghanistan and Uganda in T20 The Asian side Afghanistan, who stunned several big names in last year's ODI World Cup, come into the tournament on the back of mixed form, having won only four of their last 10 T20Is. With five wins in six games, Uganda was the standout team alongside Namibia in the Africa Qualifier as they sealed their berth in the mega event. Uganda have a stellar record leading up to the tournament with 41 wins in their last 49 T20Is, a win percentage of 83.67 percent. Squads

Group C is a tricky one and Afghanistan will be eyeing to start off their campaign with flying colours. Uganda will be determined to make the world take notice while Papua New Guinea gave the West Indies a scare the other day. There’s New Zealand as well who are always a threat in mega events. Notching up two points on the board early on is crucial for both sides today and it is definitely going to be a thrilling contest! If the previous game between West Indies and Papua New Guinea is anything to go by at this venue, the conditions will test the skills of the batters. There will be assistance for the new-ball bowlers while spinners are likely to extract turn. As a batter, you need to get your eye in before chancing your arms.
