Satam... yet again

Shivaji Satam is all set to come in yet another "CID" on Sony TV - "CID Special Bureau" from next Monday. SANGEETA BAROOAH PISHAROTY catches up with the super actor.

This time to focus on long-buried skeletons... Shivaji Satam (left) with actor Rajnikant at an award function.

A REGULAR for seven long years on TV screens in today's competitive turf and successfully so, is a feat one can't sweep out of the way when talking of the Friday serial CID on Sony TV. But then, Shivaji Satam, who is almost synonymous with the serial for these years, would like to point out here that "The accomplishment of a tele-serial has a lot to do with the depth of its story than other frills." Audience can easily see through gimmicks, he insists.

Having commanded good ratings for Sony TV on Friday's 10 p.m. slot, the serial has now an off-shoot. A new version named CID Special Bureau, would run on Mondays and Tuesdays at 10.30 p.m. beginning next week. "It would have a set of five new actors forming a team and I would as usual, head it," the Marathi actor smiles. To make it different from the mother soap, this one would dig into old cases "in deep freezer." Something which just would cross one's way and leave a seed of suspicion behind.

"It could be any of the team members coming across suspicious circumstances all of a sudden stumbling upon an old unexplained skeleton, or a relative bringing in a piece of evidence and the like. There would be lot of forensic tests shown here like DNA testing and carbon dating, etc." explains the character actor in a volley of films including Pukar, Hu Tu Tu, Vaastav, Fiza etc. To keep the difference stark, he says, CID on Fridays would trail investigations on only current cases. The team for the new show includes names like Anoop Soni and Mugdha Godbole.

"All of them have done fabulous jobs and we hope to get the same audience interest as in CID. The best part about B.P. Singh's Fireworks is that it focuses on each character of their serials equally. No one role dominates a soap," he stresses on the resultant variety for the viewers to taste.

Film roles

Featuring in only one serial at present, Satam says though he never misses even a single Marathi play, his springboard to screens, big and small, he has not been acting in one for the last six years due to lack of time. "But I watch Marathi serials which have so much to offer compared to the usual Hindi ones," he states. Always reaching home after Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin on Sony TV gets over, which he would otherwise like to watch, he catches up with Hollywood films on the channels if not watching National Geographic or Discovery Channel.

Just back from Goa after a shoot for CID Special Bureau, he also has plans to go to Singapore for another shoot of the serial.

And in films, he would soon be seen in Subhash Ghai's Kisna, Mahesh Manjrekar's Viruddh along side Amitabh Bachchan and Uttarayan"based on a famous Marathi story."

"I am a contented man because I am doing what I always wanted to do and that clearly is acting," the versatile actor sums up his career graph.

To add to it fittingly would be - What acting Sir!
