How Sushima was in history
According to historical accounts of the Mauryan period, Sushima or Sushim was a Mauryan prince, eldest son of Emperor Bindusara and half brother of Emperor Ashoka. He was the legitimate heir to the throne, but was assassinated by Ashoka in 274-270 BCE. According to Ashokavadhana, Ashoka tricked Sushim into falling into a pit filled with live coals. Emperor Bindusara nominated Sushim to be his successor but the ministers, especially Radhagupta, supported Ashoka, who eventually became the king after Bindusara. Sushim was the viceroy or governor to Taxila during the reign of Bindusara. Prince Sushim was arrogant and not pleasing towards the ministers of the council, which became the primary reason for him losing support from the ministers. Sushim's name is found in Mauryan texts and accounts and in Ashokavadhana, an important text related tot he life and reign of Emperor Ashoka.
